We present SoccerGuard, a novel framework for predicting injuries in women's soccer using Machine Learning (ML). This framework can ingest data from multiple sources, including subjective wellness and training load reports from players, objective GPS sensor measurements, third-party player statistics, and injury reports verified by medical personnel. We experiment with a number of different settings related to synthetic data generation, input and output window sizes, and ML models for prediction. Our results show that, given the right configurations and feature combinations, injury event prediction can be undertaken with considerable accuracy. The optimal results are achieved when input windows are reduced and larger combined output windows are defined, in combination with an ideally balanced data set. The framework also includes a dashboard with a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) to support interactive analysis and visualization.

An eigenvalue problem arising in optimal insulation related to the minimization of the heat decay rate of an insulated body is adapted to enforce a positive lower bound imposed on the distribution of insulating material. We prove the existence of optimal domains among a class of convex shapes and propose a numerical scheme to approximate the eigenvalue. The stability of the shape optimization among convex, bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is proven for an approximation with polyhedral domains under a non-conformal convexity constraint. We prove that on the ball, symmetry breaking of the optimal insulation can be expected in general. To observe how the lower bound affects the breaking of symmetry in the optimal insulation and the shape optimization, the eigenvalue and optimal domains are approximated for several values of mass $m$ and lower bounds $\ell_{\min}\ge0$. The numerical experiments suggest, that in general symmetry breaking still arises, unless $m$ is close to a critical value $m_0$, and $\ell_{\min}$ large enough such that almost all of the mass $m$ is fixed through the lower bound. For $\ell_{\min}=0$, the numerical results are consistent with previous numerical experiments on shape optimization restricted to rotationally symmetric, convex domains.

For a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ with canonical module, we study how relations between $\text{index}(R)$ and $\text{g}\ell\ell(R)$ and between $\text{index}(R)$ and $e(R)$ are preserved when factoring out regular sequences and localizing at prime ideals. We then give conditions for when ideals in a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring are Elias and Burch, and use these conditions to study the relationship between Elias, Burch, and Ulrich ideals.

This study will investigate the user experience while interacting with highly photorealistic virtual job interviewer avatars in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and on a 2D screen. Having a precise speech recognition mechanism, our virtual character performs a mock-up software engineering job interview to adequately immerse the user in a life-like scenario. To evaluate the efficiency of our system, we measure factors such as the provoked level of anxiety, social presence, self-esteem, and intrinsic motivation. This research is a work in progress with a prospective within-subject user study including approximately 40 participants. All users will engage with three job interview conditions (VR, AR, and desktop) and provide their feedback. Through exposing items to users, implicit feedback recommender systems influence the logged interactions, and, ultimately, their own recommendations. This effect is called exposure bias and it can lead to issues such as filter bubbles and echo chambers. Previous research employed the multinomial logit model (MNL) with exposure information to reduce exposure bias on synthetic data. This extended abstract summarizes our previous study in which we investigated whether (i) these findings hold for human-generated choices, (ii) other discrete choice models mitigate bias better, and (iii) an item's estimated relevance can depend on the relevances of the other items that were presented with it. We collected a data set of biased and unbiased choices in a controlled online user study and measured the effects of overexposure and competition. We found that (i) the discrete choice models effectively mitigated exposure bias on human-generated choice data, (ii) there were no significant differences in robustness among the different discrete choice models, and (iii) only multivariate discrete choice models were robust to competition between items. We conclude that discrete choice models mitigate exposure bias effectively because they consider item-co-exposure. Moreover, exposing items alongside more or less popular items can bias future recommendations significantly and item exposure must be tracked for overcoming exposure bias. We present foundation language models developed to power Apple Intelligence features, including a ~3 billion parameter model designed to run efficiently on devices and a large server-based language model designed for Private Cloud Compute. These models are designed to perform a wide range of tasks efficiently, accurately, and responsibly. This report describes the model architecture, the data used to train the model, the training process, how the models are optimized for inference, and the evaluation results. We highlight our focus on Responsible AI and how the principles are applied throughout the model development.

Distributed computing in the context of deep neural networks (DNNs) implies the execution of one part of the network on edge devices and the other part typically on a large-scale cloud platform. Conventional methods propose to employ a serial concatenation of a learned image and source encoder, the latter projecting the image encoder output (bottleneck features) into a quantized representation for bitrate-efficient transmission. In the cloud, a respective source decoder reprojects the quantized representation to the original feature representation, serving as an input for the downstream task decoder performing, e.g., semantic segmentation. In this work, we propose joint source and task decoding, as it allows for a smaller network size in the cloud. This further enables the scalability of such services in large numbers without requiring extensive computational load on the cloud per channel. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by achieving a distributed semantic segmentation SOTA over a wide range of bitrates on the mean intersection over union metric, while using only $9.8 \%$ ... $11.59 \%$ of cloud DNN parameters used in the previous SOTA on the COCO and Cityscapes datasets., Comment: accepted in ECCV2024

Optimizing discrete black-box functions is key in several domains, e.g. protein engineering and drug design. Due to the lack of gradient information and the need for sample efficiency, Bayesian optimization is an ideal candidate for these tasks. Several methods for high-dimensional continuous and categorical Bayesian optimization have been proposed recently. However, our survey of the field reveals highly heterogeneous experimental set-ups across methods and technical barriers for the replicability and application of published algorithms to real-world tasks. To address these issues, we develop a unified framework to test a vast array of high-dimensional Bayesian optimization methods and a collection of standardized black-box functions representing real-world application domains in chemistry and biology. These two components of the benchmark are each supported by flexible, scalable, and easily extendable software libraries (poli and poli-baselines), allowing practitioners to readily incorporate new optimization objectives or discrete optimizers. The emergence of label-free microscopy techniques has significantly improved our ability to precisely characterize biochemical targets, enabling non-invasive visualization of cellular organelles and tissue organization. Each label-free method has specific benefits, drawbacks, and varied varied sensitivity under measurement conditions across different types of specimens. To link all these disparate label-free optical interactions together and to compare detection sensitivity of these modalities, we investigate their sensitivity within the framework of statistical estimation theory. This paper introduces a comprehensive unified framework for evaluating the bounds for signal detection with label-free microscopy methods, including second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG), coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS), stimulated Raman loss (SRL), stimulated Raman gain (SRG), stimulated emission (SE), impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS), transient absorption (TA), and photothermal effect (PTE). A general model for signal generation induced by optical scattering is developed. Based on this model, the information obtained is quantitatively analyzed using Fisher information, and the fundamental constraints on estimation precision are evaluated through the Cram\'er-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB)., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Non-linear mixed effects modeling and simulation (NLME M&S) is evaluated to be used for standardization with longitudinal data in presence of confounders. Standardization is a well-known method in causal inference to correct for confounding by analyzing and combining results from subgroups of patients. We show that non-linear mixed effects modeling is a particular implementation of standardization that conditions on individual parameters described by the random effects of the mixed effects model. Our motivation is that in pharmacometrics NLME M&S is routinely used to analyze clinical trials and to predict and compare potential outcomes of the same patient population under different treatment regimens. Such a comparison is a causal question sometimes referred to as causal prediction. Nonetheless, NLME M&S is rarely positioned as a method for causal prediction. As an example, a simulated clinical trial is used that assumes treatment confounder feedback in which early outcomes can cause deviations from the planned treatment schedule. Being interested in the outcome for the hypothetical situation that patients adhere to the planned treatment schedule, we put assumptions in a causal diagram. From the causal diagram, conditional independence assumptions are derived either using latent conditional exchangeability, conditioning on the individual parameters, or using sequential conditional exchangeability, conditioning on earlier outcomes. Both conditional independencies can be used to estimate the estimand of interest, e.g., with standardization, and they give unbiased estimates.

To optimize efficiently over discrete data and with only few available target observations is a challenge in Bayesian optimization. We propose a continuous relaxation of the objective function and show that inference and optimization can be computationally tractable. We consider in particular the optimization domain where very few observations and strict budgets exist; motivated by optimizing protein sequences for expensive to evaluate bio-chemical properties. The advantages of our approach are two-fold: the problem is treated in the continuous setting, and available prior knowledge over sequences can be incorporated directly. More specifically, we utilize available and learned distributions over the problem domain for a weighting of the Hellinger distance which yields a covariance function. We show that the resulting acquisition function can be optimized with both continuous or discrete optimization algorithms and empirically assess our method on two bio-chemical sequence optimization tasks.

Normative non-functional requirements specify constraints that a system must observe in order to avoid violations of social, legal, ethical, empathetic, and cultural norms. As these requirements are typically defined by non-technical system stakeholders with different expertise and priorities (ethicists, lawyers, social scientists, etc.), ensuring their well-formedness and consistency is very challenging. Recent research has tackled this challenge using a domain-specific language to specify normative requirements as rules whose consistency can then be analysed with formal methods. In this paper, we propose a complementary approach that uses Large Language Models to extract semantic relationships between abstract representations of system capabilities. These relations, which are often assumed implicitly by non-technical stakeholders (e.g., based on common sense or domain knowledge), are then used to enrich the automated reasoning techniques for eliciting and analyzing the consistency of normative requirements. We show the effectiveness of our approach to normative requirements elicitation and operationalization through a range of real-world case studies.

High-harmonic generation is one of the most extreme nonlinear-optical processes observed to date. By focusing an intense laser pulse into a gas, the light-atom interaction that occurs during the process of ionising the atoms results in the generation of harmonics of the driving laser frequency, that extend up to order ~300 (corresponding to photon energies from 4 to >500eV). Because this technique is simple to implement and generates coherent, laser-like, soft-x-ray beams, it is currently being developed for applications in science and technology including probing of dynamics in chemical and materials systems and for imaging. In this work we demonstrate that by carefully controlling the shape of intense light pulses of 6-8 optical cycles, we can control the interaction of light with an atom as it is being ionised, in a way that improves the efficiency of x-ray generation by an order of magnitude. Furthermore, we demonstrate that it is possible to control the spectral characteristics of the emitted radiation and to channel the interaction between different-order nonlinear processes. The result is an increased utility of harmonic generation as a light source, as well as the first demonstration of optical pulse-shaping techniques to control high-order nonlinear processes., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We present spatial coherence measurements of extreme-ultraviolet light generated using the process of high-harmonic upconversion of a femtosecond laser. Using a phase-matched hollow-fiber geometry, the generated beam is found to exhibit essentially full spatial coherence. The coherence of this laser-like EUV source is demonstrated by recording Gabor holograms of small objects. This work demonstrates the capability to do EUV holography using a tabletop experimental setup. Such an EUV source, with low divergence and high spatial coherence, can be used for experiments such as high-precision metrology, inspection of optical components for EUV lithography (1), and for microscopy and holography (2) with nanometer resolution. Furthermore, the short time duration of the EUV radiation (a few femtoseconds) will enable EUV microscopy and holography to be performed with ultrahigh time resolution., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate low-frequency interferometric impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) imaging with high robustness to distortions by optical scattering. ISRS is a pump-probe coherent Raman spectroscopy that can capture Raman vibrational spectra. Recording of ISRS spectra requires isolation of a probe pulse from the pump pulse. While this separation is simple in non-scattering specimens, such as liquids, scattering leads to significant pump pulse contamination and prevent the extraction of a Raman spectrum. We introduce a robust method for ISRS microscopy that works in complex scattering samples. High signal-to-noise ISRS spectra are obtained even when the pump and probe pulses pass through many scattering layers., Comment: 13 pages; 5 figures

A posteriori error estimates are an important tool to bound discretization errors in terms of computable quantities avoiding regularity conditions that are often difficult to establish. For non-linear and non-differentiable problems, problems involving jumping coefficients, and finite element methods using anisotropic triangulations, such estimates often involve large factors, leading to sub-optimal error estimates. We present a comprehensive strategy and its practical implementation using the commercial ScanImage software platform to perform hyperspectral point scanning microscopy when a fast time dependent signal varies at each pixel level. In the proposed acquisition scheme the scan along the X axis is slowed down while the data acquisition is maintained at high pace to enable the rapid acquisition of the time dependent signal at each pixel level. The ScanImage generated raw 2D images have a very asymmetric aspect ratio between X and Y, the X axis encoding both for space and time acquisition. The results are X axis macro-pixel where the associated time depend signal is sampled therefore providing an hyperspectral information. We exemplified the proposed hyperspectral scheme in the context of time domain coherent Raman imaging where a pump pulse impulsively excites molecular vibrations that are subsequently probed by a time delayed probe pulse. In this case the time dependent signal is a fast acousto-optics delay line that can scan a delay of 4.5ps in 25$\mu$s, at each pixel level. We this acquisition scheme we demonstrate ultra-fast hyperspectral vibrational imaging in the low frequency range [10$cm^{-1}$, 150 $cm^{-1}$] over a 500 $\mu m$ field of view in 14ms (7 frames/s). The proposed acquisition scheme can be readily extended to other applications requiring to acquired a fast evolving signal at each pixel level.

Third harmonic generation (THG) provides a valuable, label-free approach to imaging biological systems. To date, THG microscopy has been performed using point scanning methods that rely on intensity measurements lacking phase information of the complex field. We report the first demonstration of THG holographic microscopy and the reconstruction of the complex THG signal field with spatial synthetic aperture imaging. Phase distortions arising from measurement-to-measurement fluctuations and imaging components cause optical aberrations in the reconstructed THG field. We have developed an aberration-correction algorithm that estimates and corrects for these phase distortions to reconstruct the spatial synthetic aperture THG field without optical aberrations., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We study multifield extensions of Reggeon Field Theory (also equivalent to Directed Percolation model) at criticality in the perturbative epsilon-expansion below the upper critical dimension Dc=4 at one loop, for the special case when all fields have the same scale (anomalous) dimensions. Analyzing all the fixed points of the renormalization group flow for N=2 flavors and some for N=3, we find scale invariant solutions which are characterized by specific emergent global symmetries of the interacting potential. It is shown that discretizations based on variational or weak formulations of the plate bending problem with simple support boundary conditions do not lead to failure of convergence when polygonal domain approximations are used and the imposed boundary conditions are compatible with the nodal interpolation of the restriction of certain regular functions to approximating domains. It is further shown that this is optimal in the sense that a full realization of the boundary conditions leads to failure of convergence for conforming methods. The abstract conditions imply that standard nonconforming and discontinuous Galerkin methods converge correctly while conforming methods require a suitable relaxation of the boundary condition. The results are confirmed by numerical experiments.
