Suckling bout duration and frequency were used in the past as an indicator of milk intake. However, later studies found no significant relationship between suckling bout duration and frequency and milk or energy intake. On the other hand recent studies are in line with the suggestion that suckling bout duration and frequency may express intensity of maternal care. The three extant zebra species differ in their ecology and social system. Mountain E quus zebra and Grévy's zebra E . grevyi live in an arid environment, whereas plains zebras E . quagga are found in savannah. Mountain and plains zebra mares form stable herds associated with high aggression and low aggression, respectively. Female Grévy's zebras form loose associations with the lowest level of aggression. The aim of this study was to re-evaluate the suggestion that suckling bout duration and frequency are affected by social system. We observed suckling behaviour of 30 foals (16 plains zebras, 8 Grévy's zebras and 6 mountain zebras) at the Dvůr Králové Zoo, Czech Republic. We found that suckling bout duration was longest in mountain zebras, followed by plains and Grévy's zebras. Similar results were found for suckling frequency. These results coincide with the rate of aggression among mares; foals spent more time by suckling in species, where more aggression among adults occurred. Thus, the results of our study support the suggestion that suckling bout duration reflects social needs of the foal rather than milk intake requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fifty five Prussian carpCarassius auratus gibeliowere radio-tracked weekly along the course of the upper Elbe River, for 15 months. In addition, diurnal movements were observed in three different habitat types(main channel, navigation canal and floodplain areas). Fish species composition from 10 fish ladders was regularly analysed in 1996, 2000 and 2001, and patterns of juvenile(0+ year) fish distribution and abundance were collected in 2000 and 2001, to support telemetric data on longitudinal migrations, and habitat preference within the studied stretch. Downstream migrations dominated in all seasons, being most intensive in spring and reaching a maximum distance of 85 km. Migration stopped when specimens found a floodplain area, where they occupied larger home ranges compared to the main channel. Migrations upstream of up to 2 km were rare, and specimens did not enter fish ladders. Spontaneous reproduction only occurred on the floodplain and its success was very low. The results suggested that neither upstream migrations, nor spontaneous reproduction represented the key mechanism for the Prussian carp invasion into the Elbe catchment area of the Czech Republic. In autumn, burbot Lota lota migrations through a fish ladder in the regulated Ohrˇe River, Czech Republic, were stimulated by an increase in discharge and a decrease in water temperature but the number of burbot in the ladder was significantly lower when compared with other seasons. The maximum number of burbot in the ladder was recorded in spring when discharge decreased. A sudden decrease in water level caused burbot to leave the refuges in the riverbanks that they had occupied during high winter discharges. The results indicate that the relatively low short-term variability of physical conditions represented by the modified discharge regime can induce a stronger response in fish migrations even in comparison with typical reproductive migrations of these species. The diffusion of macromolecules, nanoparticles, viruses, and bacteria is essential for targeting hosts or cellular destinations. While these entities can bind to receptors and ligands on host surfaces, the impact of multiple binding sites-referred to as multivalency-on diffusion along strands or surfaces is poorly understood. Through numerical simulations, we have discovered a significant acceleration in diffusion for particles with increasing valency, while maintaining the same overall affinity to the host surface. This acceleration arises from the redistribution of the binding affinity of the particle across multiple binding ligands. As a result, particles that are immobilized when monovalent can achieve near-unrestricted diffusion upon becoming multivalent. Additionally, we demonstrate that the diffusion of multivalent particles with a rigid ligand distribution can be modulated by patterned host receptors. These findings provide insights into the complex diffusion mechanisms of multivalent particles and biological entities, and offer new strategies for designing advanced nanoparticle systems with tailored diffusion properties, thereby enhancing their effectiveness in applications such as drug delivery and diagnostics.

Feral cattle ( Bos taurus ) live in socially stable herds. Due to farm management practices, intensively managed dairy cows experience frequent regrouping, which can disrupt affiliative bonds and induce social stress. This study examines how changes in herd composition affect milk yield and udder health traits in resident dairy cows exposed to the withdrawal of herd members or the introduction of new individuals. Milk yield, electrical conductivity, and blood presence in milk were measured in 798 cows using precision dairy sensors over 9 years. Milk yield decreased significantly ( p < 0.001) one day after the removal of familiar herd members, while introducing cows had no effect. A higher number of cows being withdrawn (up to 10) was associated with reduced milk yield ( p < 0.001), elevated milk electrical conductivity ( p = 0.01), and an increased prevalence of blood presence in milk ( p = 0.01), which can indicate potential udder health issues linked to social stress. Holstein Friesian, primiparous, and first-lactation-stage cows were more affected than Czech Simental and multiparous cows later in lactation. These findings underscore the influence of social stability on dairy cow welfare and productivity, emphasising the need for strategies to mitigate stress when herd changes are necessary.

Cell membranes act as semi-permeable barriers, often restricting the entry of large or hydrophilic molecules. Nonetheless, certain amphiphilic molecules, such as antimicrobial and cell-penetrating peptides, can cross these barriers. In this study, we demonstrate that specific properties of transmembrane proteins/peptides can enhance membrane permeation of amphiphilic peptides. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics with free-energy calculations, we identify key translocation-enhancing attributes of transmembrane proteins/peptides: a continuous hydrophilic patch, charged residues preferably in the membrane center, and aromatic hydrophobic residues. By employing both coarse-grained and atomistic simulations, complemented by experimental validation, we show that these properties not only enhance peptide translocation but also speed up lipid flip-flop. The enhanced flip-flop reinforces the idea that proteins such as scramblases and insertases not only share structural features but also operate through identical biophysical mechanisms enhancing the insertion and translocation of amphiphilic molecules. Scramblases play a pivotal role in facilitating bidirectional lipid transport across cell membranes, thereby influencing lipid metabolism, membrane homeostasis, and cellular signaling. MTCH2, a mitochondrial outer membrane protein insertase, has a membrane-spanning hydrophilic groove resembling those that form the lipid transit pathway in known scramblases. Employing both coarse-grained and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we show that MTCH2 significantly reduces the free energy barrier for lipid movement along the groove and therefore can indeed function as a scramblase. Notably, the scrambling rate of MTCH2 in silico is similar to that of voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), a recently discovered scramblase of the outer mitochondrial membrane, suggesting a potential complementary physiological role for these mitochondrial proteins. The transport of molecules across cell membranes is vital for proper cell function and effective drug delivery. While most cell membranes naturally possess an asymmetric lipid composition, research on membrane transport predominantly uses symmetric lipid membranes. The permeation through the asymmetric membrane is then calculated as a sum of the inverse permeabilities of leaflets from symmetric bilayers. In this study, we examined how two types of amphiphilic molecules translocate across both asymmetric and symmetric membranes. Using computer simulations with both coarse-grained and atomistic force fields, we calculated the free energy profiles for the passage of model amphiphilic peptides and a lipid across various membranes. Our results consistently demonstrate that while the free energy profiles for asymmetric membranes with a small differential stress concur with symmetric ones in the region of lipid headgroups, the profiles differ around the center of the membrane. In this region, the free energy for the asymmetric membrane transitions between the profiles for two symmetric membranes. In addition, we show that peptide permeability through an asymmetric membrane cannot always be predicted from the permeabilities of the symmetric membranes.
