Abstract

Urban areas generate more than 70% of the world's climate change emissions, mainly CO2, produced by the combustion of fossil fuels. Climate change is increasing cities' exposure to climate hazards, such as heat waves or floods. Therefore, there is a need to improve risk management with the inclusion of climate resilience in urban policy design. Despite improved urban climate monitoring, there are still relatively few scientific publications on climate change adaptation in urban areas. Adaptation to climate change is not achieved through specific action, but rather through the adoption and continuous implementation of adaptation actions such as housing rehabilitation, green space management and protection measures for vulnerable groups. This variety of actions makes it difficult not only to identify different indicators, but also to use common benchmarks. Considering the role of municipalities in adapting to climate change, it is crucial to identify adaptation indicators that serve as a basis for decision making, as well as evaluation methods that allow the effectiveness of planned and implemented measures in municipalities. It can be used to determine which measures increase the level of adaptation or lead to poor adaptation. Therefore, monitoring indicators makes it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures, in addition to formulating new ones. This paper includes a literature review of existing index designed to address climate hazards and mitigate their impacts in urban areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The production of biogas through the conversion of organic waste into energy and bio-products of added value has the potential to play a significant role in the transition towards a more sustainable and decarbonized energy system. One notable study, conducted by Bedoi'c and colleagues, offers a comprehensive analysis of novel feedstocks for biogas production and their environmental impact, proposing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach for both the biogas production side and the utilization side [[4]]. Abstract

The main goal of AGROinLOG is the demonstration of Integrated Biomass Logistic Centres (IBLC) for food and non-food products, evaluating their technical, environmental and economic feasibility. The project is based on agro-industries, which are willing to deploy new business lines in their facilities, opening new markets in bio-commodities (energy, transport and manufacturing purposes) and intermediate bio-products (transport and biochemicals). More specifically, this work is focused on a fodder industry, whose main activity is related to the dehydration of wheat straw and corn stalk to produce animal bedding and feeding. The object of this study is the evaluation of two biomass-based materials (i.e. wheat straw and corn stalk) to determine the potential of these feedstock as raw materials for the synthesis of activated carbons (ACs) and their further application as supercapacitors.

16. Investigation on co-firing of coal mine waste residues in pulverized coal combustion systems

Abstract

Millions of tonnes of coal mine waste residues are piled up in dumping sites, causing serious environmental problems. Co-combustion in fluidized bed facilities is the most widespread alternative for the energy utilization of these by-products. However, no experiences have been so far reported of coal mine waste residues co-firing under pulverized fuel combustion technology. This work proves the technical feasibility of co-firing coal with up to 20% coal mine waste residues and investigates the impacts of transferring this co-firing alternative into a commercial unit. Experimental co-firing tests of coal mine waste residues were conducted on a 500 kWth pulverized fuel pilot plant. Regulated emissions (CO, CO2, SO2 and NOx) and visible flame radiation were monitored, obtaining regular and stable flicker and acceptable emissions levels for CO (200 mg/m3N) and NOx (700–800 mg/m3N). Finally, the impact analysis of co-firing coal mine waste residues in a full-scale pulverized fuel plant was performed by simulating the power cycle and combustion process in a 160 MWe pulverized coal combustion unit. Simulation results show the viability of this alternative in terms of plant efficiency, increase in power consumptions of auxiliary equipment and pollutant emissions for co-firing ratios under 10% in energy basis.

Abstract

The interaction between alkali chloride and sulfur oxides has important implications for deposition and corrosion in combustion of biomass. In the present study, the sulfation of particulate KCl (90–125 μm) by SO2 was studied in a fixed bed reactor in the temperature range 673–1023 K and with reactant concentrations of 500–3000 ppm SO2, 1–20% O2, and 4–15% H2O. The degree of sulfation was monitored by measuring the formation of HCl. Analysis of the solid residue confirmed that the reaction proceeds according to a shrinking core model and showed the formation of an eutectic at higher temperatures. On the basis of the experimental results, a rate expression for the sulfation reaction was derived. The model compared well with literature data for sulfation of KCl and NaCl, and the results indicate that it may be applied at even higher SO2 concentrations and temperatures than those of the present study. Simulations of sulfation of KCl particles with different size indicate that only for very small KCl particles, below 1 μm, a considerable in-flight sulfation is achievable at the short gas residence times typical of combustion systems.
