Abstract Background In today’s business environment, where sustainability has emerged as a strategic axis of business practices, the study of the link between human resources management and environmental management becomes increasingly necessary. In this sense, the present research focuses on analyzing the impact of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) on the Sustainable Performance (SP) of Spanish wineries, as well as the mediating effect of Employee Wellbeing (EW) and Work Engagement (WE) on this linkage. In addition, age, size and membership in a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) are introduced as control variables to increase the precision of the cause-effect relationships examined. Methods The study proposes a conceptual model based on previous studies, which is tested using structural equations (PLS-SEM) with data collected from 196 Spanish wineries between September 2022 and January 2023. Results The findings of the research reveal the existence of a positive and significant relationship between the GHRM development and the SP of Spanish wineries, as well as the partial mediation of EW and WE in this association. Conclusions The uniqueness and significance of this study can be attributed to several crucial factors. First, it enhances the understanding and knowledge regarding the advantages associated with GHRM development. Second, no prior research has conducted a comprehensive study on GHRM as a catalyst for SP within the context of Spanish wineries. Third, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous study has analyzed the mediating role of EW and WE as mediators in the relationship between GHRM and SP of wineries.

Abstract The objective of this research is to analyze the knowledge structure of the academic literature indexed in the Core Collection of the Web of Science (WoS) on gaining a competitive advantage through sustainability in the wine industry, from the first article registered in 2009 to 2023, in order to identify the latest trends in the topics under study. For this purpose, a bibliometric and systematic analysis of the literature was carried out. First, for the quantitative analysis of the scientific production, the bibliometric study was conducted, using the WoS database for data collection and the VosViewer and Bibliometrix applications to create the network maps. Second, once the bibliography had been examined quantitatively, the content analysis was performed following the PRISMA methodology. The results show, among other aspects, the uneven pace of growth of the scientific production studied since 2009, that innovation, wine tourism, carbon footprint, dynamic capabilities and climate change are among the current major topics of study, as well as the predominance of Italy, Spain, the United States and Australia in terms of scientific production in the subject matter. There are several justifications for the originality of this study, given that, first, it contributes to the understanding of the academic literature and the identification of the most recent trends in the field and, second, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no previous bibliometric studies that have addressed the topic analyzed.

Wine tourism is increasingly considered as a strategic element in the wine producing countries of the Old World. In the case of Spain, several researchers have studied the role of wine routes in boosting the competitiveness of a territory, increasing wine production, improving the quality of life of citizens and the respect for the environment. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no previous studies that have analyzed in a unified way the wine routes of the Region of Valencia, that is, the wine routes of Alicante and Utiel-Requena. To overcome this research gap, the study comparably analyzes these wine routes in terms of attracting wine tourists and the economic impact generated in the period 2017-2021, also relativizing the data to the average of the total Spanish wine routes. The results of the research show that both routes attract a lower number of wine tourists than the average of the Spanish wine routes. In addition, it should be noted that the Utiel-Requena route generated a higher economic impact compared to the Alicante wine route between 2017-2019, with this trend reversing in 2019. This study, therefore, contributes to the improvement of scientific knowledge in several ways, given that, first, the research provides new knowledge in the field of wine tourism in Spain and, second, there are no previous studies that have analyzed in a unified way the wine routes in the Region of Valencia.

Coastal tourism is deep into a dichotomy between its potential to provide a wide range of social and natural benefits, and its traditional link to mass models, provoking a profound debate around the generation of negative externalities. This study examines the role of innovation and strategic corporate social responsibility orientation in the relationship between CSR and corporate performance to determine the mechanisms that underlie this main relationship. To this end, a sample of 202 hotels on the Spanish coast is analysed by applying the Partial Least Square Methodology. Useful results are derived from the empirical testing of the theoretical model, such as the existence of a positive direct effect between CSR and hotel performance. Likewise, we shed light on the mediating role of innovation and the moderating effect of a strategic CSR orientation in the main relationship, providing valid solutions for both academics and managers of coastal hotels, in terms of adopting CSR practices and promoting its integration into the core business of the hotel, and further developing innovations that will boost the benefits derived from their responsible practices, as well as their strengths to overcome the barriers traditionally faced when carrying out CSR strategies.

This study seeks to explore the multifaceted impacts of the Green Intellectual Capital (GIC) within viticulture enterprises on the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This endeavor holds significant academic value, as, to the best of our understanding, no prior investigations have delved into this specific correlation. The impetus for this inquiry is rooted in two foundational beliefs: firstly, that an enhanced GIC equips firms with the tools to more effectively navigate environmental hurdles; and secondly, that GIC serves as a transformative agent within entities, fostering enriched knowledge acquisition. To methodically address the stipulated aim, a qualitative methodology was employed, underpinned by a singular case study. The findings underscore the instrumental role of the three facets of GIC—Green Human Capital, Green Structural Capital, and Green Relational Capital—in facilitating the attainment of SDGs 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, and 17.

The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of wine routes and Designations of Origin (DOs) on the competitiveness of wineries belonging to the Valencian Community, given that, to the best of our knowledge, such relationships have not been analyzed in this wine region. To this end, information was obtained on the operating income, results for the year, equity, level of indebtedness and number of employees of the 90 wineries belonging to this wine-growing territory. Subsequently, a comparison of means was made, calculating Student’s t-test for independent samples with the SPSS software, based on whether the wineries belonged to the wine routes and DOs existing in the Valencian Community. The results show the wineries that are members of a wine route and/or a DO have, on average, a higher operating income, higher equity and a higher number of employees, and these differences are statistically significant. This research may be useful for general managers who are considering the development of wine tourism activities, as well as for those who are thinking of joining DOs, since, as was empirically demonstrated, these actions can improve the economic performance of their wineries and, as a consequence, their competitiveness.

The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) on the economic, social, and environmental performance of Spanish wineries. Additionally, age, size, and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) membership are introduced as control variables in order to increase the accuracy of the cause-effect associations examined. To reach this objective, a conceptual model has been constructed and assessed through Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using data gathered from a survey conducted between September 2022 and January 2023, involving 196 Spanish wineries. The results demonstrate the occurrence of a positive and meaningful relationship between GHRM activities and the three yield typologies assessed in the Spanish wine context. This study is novel in the academic literature on environmental and human resource management, since, to the best of our knowledge, no previous research has looked into the effect of GHRM on the sustainable performance of Spanish wineries. Thus, it is useful for both academics and wine industry professionals who are examining potential variables that can catalyze winery performance.

The purpose of this research is to empirically analyze how regional specialization influence innovation in enterprises, as well as the mediation effect of absorptive capacity and cognitive social capital, as knowledge diffusion mechanisms. A questionnaire was developed and distributed, obtaining a sample of 197 energy firms in Spain. For the assessment of this data, the PLS-SEM technique, a multivariate analytical approach, has been used. The results show a positive and significant direct effect between the degree of regional specialization and the innovative performance of firms. In addition, the cognitive social capital and absorptive capacity variables show a positive and significant mediation effect in the relationship proposed, as well as between them, thus constructing a double mediation and proving to be relevant mechanisms for knowledge diffusion. Then, it is concluded that cognitive and geographical proximity matters, since enable firms to obtain resources for knowledge upgrading and innovation. Thus, it is crucial for firms to develop their capacity to absorb new external knowledge, as has been evidenced as a key factor to leverage the opportunities of the context in which firms are located. This paper has important implications for the long-standing complex debates about whether regions should develop, primarily whether they should do so through specialization or diversification.

This research offers a bibliometric analysis of 588 publications on wine tourism published between 1998 and 2021, highlighting the years of publication, the publication format, the fields of research, the authors, the institutions, the main journals and the country of origin of both the authors and the scientific production analyzed. To our knowledge, no bibliometric study has focused on the study of wine tourism, so this study aims to fill this research gap, serving as a reference guide for both academics and professionals in the wine sector who want to know in depth how the study of this type of tourism has been approached. The results of the research show that the academic study of wine tourism dates back to the end of the 1990s, with the New World countries standing out in its study, especially Australia as the country with the highest scientific production and the largest number of academics focused on the study of this type of tourism. The study allows us to highlight the value of academic articles as the main means of disseminating research results, these being focused on tourism, business, economic and cross-cutting research. The results reveal relevant conclusions for academics, winemakers and tourism managers on the knowledge structure of wine tourism activity.

The purpose of this research is to deepen the study of the influence of cognitive proximity has on the innovative performance of firms, as well as the mediating effect of potential and realized absorptive capacity in this relationship. For this purpose, an empirical analysis has been carried out. The primary data have been analyzed by means of PLS-SEM technique. The results show that the cognitive proximity of firms has both a direct and an indirect impact on their innovative performance, through their potential and realized absorptive capacity. We conclude that cognitive proximity matters for the innovation performance of firms, as it facilitates the understanding and establishment of positive reciprocity agreements between the companies, especially in terms of knowledge. Nevertheless, firms must develop a great capability to absorb new knowledge to exploit the advantages derived from its cognitive proximity to its stakeholders and leverage all the knowledge within their reach.

In the knowledge society, multinationals and, more specifically, their subsidiaries acquire great importance as a source of competitiveness for the multinational as a whole. From this perspective, this article has a double objective: (1) to define ambidextrous subsidiary, and (2) to explore if subsidiaries are ambidextrous. A quantitative methodology is used on a sample of 102 Spanish subsidiaries of foreign multinationals from knowledge-intensive sectors. Findings show that the subsidiaries analyzed are highly explorers of knowledge. However, despite the coherence between the roles played and their international competitive strategies, not all subsidiaries turned out to be ambidextrous. Only those with an integrated player role and transnational strategies can be considered as such.

The objective of this research is to analyze the mediating role of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) in the main Green Intellectual Capital (GIC) and Sustainable Performance (SP) relationship, as well as the moderating role of Green Agriculture (GA) in the GSCM–SP relationship. To achieve this objective, a theoretical model is proposed based on the literature review and then analyzed using structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) based on a sample of 196 Spanish wineries collected from September 2022 to January 2023. The results reveal that while GSCM partially mediates the GIC–SP relationship, GA positively but not significantly moderates the GSCM–SP relationship. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous studies that have contextualized the model proposed in the wine industry, so the study represents the generation of new knowledge about the meaning of the relationships presented. Furthermore, no previous research has analyzed the moderating role of GA in the GSCM–SP relationship, so the study advances understanding of the variables that may affect this link (GSCM–SP).

Global environmental problems, such as global warming, pollution, or deforestation, are critical issues that require a rapid and common response. In this context, companies play a decisive role in achieving environmental objectives through the ecological knowledge they can store and manage. In this context, the present research focuses its interest on analyzing how the set of green intangibles possessed by organizations, i.e., Green Intellectual Capital (GIC), affects their Green Performance (GP). Specifically, the study shows how GP is influenced by GIC through the mediating role of the Green Innovation (GI) variable. Therefore, the research questions to be answered by this study are as follows: Does GIC influence environmental performance? Does GI mediate the GIC-GP relationship? What actions can companies take to improve their GP? There are several reasons that have led us to carry out this research. First, there is little empirical evidence of the relationships proposed in this study. Second, to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous research that has contextualized the relationships raised in the wine industry, thus representing an advance in the comprehension of the constructs studied. Third, GIC represents an incipient field of study that needs to be developed and established within the literature linked to Intellectual Capital (IC). In order to achieve the proposed objectives, data from a survey of 202 wineries in Spain were used and a quantitative approach was followed using Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results of the research indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between GIC and GP. In addition, GI partially mediates the relationship between these two variables, playing a key role in the environmental management of wineries. The theoretical and practical contributions of the study improve the understanding of the relationships raised, being a pioneering study due to its contextualization in the wine industry, as well as providing a series of guidelines for both environmental managers and winemakers to improve their GP.

Sustainable development has positioned itself as a fundamental element of a transversal nature, being linked to the energy transition. In this sense, it must be included as a mainstream objective of all actions and strategies developed at the social, academic, business, and political levels. However, to the best of our knowledge, no bibliometric work has been carried out to date to analyze the main contributions to the literature focused on the concepts of renewable energy and sustainable development. The main aim of this paper is to establish the key trends and academic contributions made in the field of renewable energies and sustainable development. For this purpose, a bibliometric and co-citation analysis has been carried out using the Bibliometrix® tool, an open-source R package. The results show that this is a field of study that has significantly increased its importance in recent years, which is illustrated using different indicators. We conclude that research trends seem to be directed towards managing the transition to a new, more sustainable energy model composed of renewable energy production systems, in addition to the adoption of new technologies to increase the efficiency of products and power transmission systems. In this respect, the transition towards a new, more sustainable energy model seems to be a fundamental step to guarantee the sustainability of human action.

Wine and tourism represent a perfect symbiosis, as they offer a different experience to tourists and also promote the economic, social, and environmental development of wine regions. In Spain, wine tourism is an increasingly important research field and several studies have been conducted on the role of wine routes in boosting the competitiveness of a territory, increasing wine production, improving the quality of life of citizens, and respecting the environment. However, to the best of our knowledge, the economic impact generated by these routes in Spain has not been addressed in the academic literature. To overcome this research gap, this paper aims to analyze the supply and demand of tourism activities by examining the evolution of the institutions involved in the Spanish wine routes, on the one hand, and the economic impact of these routes, on the other. The results show a sharp drop in the supply of institutions and the demand for tourist routes in 2020 as a result of COVID-19, with a decrease of 2.58% in the total number of institutions adhered to the wine routes, a decrease of 73.53% in the total number of visitors to the different Wine Routes of Spain and a decrease of 74.7% in the economic impact compared to the previous year. Likewise, the research shows the existence of differences between the Wine Routes of Spain in terms of the number of visitors and their economic impact, which could serve as a guide for managers to make investments through acquisitions and/or their own investments in wineries located on the routes with the greatest economic impact..

To this end, a conceptual model is proposed based on the literature review carried out and contrasted through structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with data from 263 wineries, which in turn represent the population under study. The study results allow for us to empirically demonstrate the positive and significant relationship of wine tourism on performance, as well as the partial mediation of ecological agriculture in this relationship. The study thus contributes to the academic literature in a remarkable way given that, to our knowledge, there are no previous studies that have addressed the mediating role of ecological agriculture in the wine tourism–economic performance link. However, the research also suffers from certain limitations. In particular, given the relevance of the study, it is necessary to broaden its geographical scope so that, as a future line of research, it is proposed to contextualize the model proposed in the California wine industry, being able to subsequently establish similarities and differences in the Old and New World.

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of industrial agglomeration on the degree of interorganizational cooperation and the innovative performance of firms of the electricity supply sector in Spain. For this purpose, the agglomeration coefficient in each of the 50 provinces of Spain is calculated, based on secondary data from SABI database. Subsequently, primary data are obtained from a sample of 197 companies through a structured questionnaire. In this case, the PLS-SEM technique is used. The results show that there is a positive and significant relationship between the variables analyzed. It is concluded that industrial agglomeration and cooperation are relevant external factors that boost the innovative performance of firms and that business associations foster interorganizational cooperation.

One of the constituent elements of the industrial district is the existence of local and regional institutions which offer information and support services to the firms based in the district. These institutions, as has been shown in the literature on industrial districts, in addition to representing an important component of social capital, can play a key role in improving the joint operation of the companies in the district. The aim of this paper is, consequently, to analyze the food industry districts and the institutions which support this industry nationally. With that aim in mind, the analysis is undertaken from a regional perspective that allows us to assess, on the one hand, the degree of proximity between districts and institutions and, on the other hand, the role played by the latter as knowledge generators. The results obtained show that, in general, the support institutions tend to be located in the vicinity of the industrial districts specialized in the aforementioned sector. It likewise becomes clear that the training offer aimed at meeting the training needs of the industry is greater in these specialized environments than in others where this production model does not prevail. Such results confirm the importance of institutions in business agglomerations shaped as industrial districts.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to focus on analyzing how the set of green intangibles held by wineries and their members, i.e. green intellectual capital (GIC), affects green innovation performance (GIP). Specifically, the study aims to investigate how GIP is influenced by GIC through the mediating role of the variable knowledge management (KM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR).Design/methodology/approachThe study proposes a conceptual model, based on previous studies, which is tested through structural equations (PLS-SEM) with data collected from 202 Spanish wineries.FindingsThe results of the research indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between GIC and GIP. Furthermore, CSR and KM partially mediate the relationship between these two variables, playing a key role in the environmental management of wineries.Originality/valueThe present research, therefore, contributes to the literature in several ways. First, the study advances the understanding of GIC as well as its link with GIP. Second, the research aims to fill the gap in the literature through the study of CSR and KM as mediating variables in such a link. Third, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the model proposed has not been previously addressed in the academic literature, thus representing an advance in scientific knowledge. Fourthly, no research has addressed the study of environmental intangibles in the wine industry, with this research, therefore, being a pioneer in contextualizing the study of GIC in this increasingly knowledge-intensive industry.

- Abstract
A comprehensive understanding of the significance of vine cultivation and wine production, distribution, and consumption in Spain requires a joint consideration of its economic, social, and environmental implications. To achieve this joint vision, a quantitative research with an exploratory scope is carried out through the use of secondary data sources. The results of the research reveal that, from an economic point of view, the wine industry generates a total annual gross value added (GVA) of more than 23,700 million euros, equivalent to 2.2% of the national GVA. From a social point of view, wine maintains an important territorial rootedness, very visible in the designations of origin (DOs), being the environment where the wine comes from an appreciated attribute of the wine. From the environmental point of view, the effects of climate change introduce more adverse conditions for the cultivation of vines and force the search for solutions, since the quality and volume of wine that can be obtained in the future in Spain are conditioned by the current climatic reality.

The present research analyses how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices affect Green Innovation Performance (GIP) in the Spanish wine industry. To this end, a conceptual model is proposed and contrasted through a quantitative approach based on structural equation modeling with data collected from 202 Spanish wineries between September 2021 and January 2022. The results of the research indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between CSR and GIP. In addition, Green Intellectual Capital (GIC) and Knowledge Management (KM) partially mediate the relationship between these two variables, playing a key role in the environmental management of wineries. The present research therefore contributes to the literature in several ways. First, the study advances the understanding of CSR in the Spanish wine industry, as well as its relationship with GIP. Second, the research aims to fill a gap in the literature by studying GIC and KM as mediating variables in this link, given that, to our knowledge, there are no previous studies that have analyzed mediating variables in the CSR–GIP relationship. Third, to the best of our knowledge, the proposed model has not been previously addressed in the academic literature, which represents an advance in scientific knowledge. - Abstract
Corporate sustainability is a topic that has gathered a considerable interest in the last years. Despite recent developments, some firms have led with changes in the environment for centuries to survive, being one of the tools used for corporate sustainability. This chapter analyzes how the most long-living companies in the world have carried out sustainable businesses through embeddedness and collaboration with the environment, mostly by the use of intangible resources and capabilities, in order to remain in the market. With a narrative perspective, the authors expose some of the practices developed by the abovementioned companies. The main conclusions extracted from those firms are aimed to be potentially applied to current companies and, thus, enhance corporate sustainability and survival through already proven mechanisms.

- Abstract
To overcome the adverse effects of climate change, wineries can develop environmental management programs to save and reutilize the resources they use. This represents a change of business paradigm in the wine sector that can be extremely beneficial, given that, on the one hand, wineries that develop their environmental management can save costs and protect the environment, favoring the preservation of the environment to ensure the permanence of the sector in the territory; and, on the other hand, such management can serve as a differentiating element in the market, allowing the winery to generate a competitive advantage. The objective of this study is to know precisely what practices can be developed to ensure a correct environmental management. To this end, through a multiple case study, a decalogue of practices is identified that every winery can develop to favor the preservation of the environment in which it operates.

Academic contributions on the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on businesses have grown exponentially in recent years as a result of the importance of the business sector in improving the economy, society and the environment. Through the use of bibliometric methods and taking the Web of Science (WoS) as a reference database, the research aims to analyze the structure of scientific knowledge of the link between the SDGs and the corporate sector, analyzing 2366 documents published between 1992 and 2022. The results show, among other aspects, the accelerated growth rate of the scientific production analyzed since 2015, the use of publications in articles as the main format for disseminating research results, the relevance of the category of Environmental Sciences as the area of study in which most of the scientific production analyzed falls as well as the predominant role of the publishing houses MDPI, Elsevier and Emerald in the publication of scientific documents on the topic under analysis. The research can therefore be of use to both neophyte and experienced researchers who wish to deepen their understanding of the academic knowledge structure of the SDGs in the business world.

Business leaders play a key role in the implementation of actions leading to the achievement of the 17 SDGs. Likewise, higher education is emerging as the principal factor in developing a sense of moral responsibility amongst university business students, who will eventually become company managers and decision makers. The aim of this research is, thus, twofold. First, to analyse university business students’ perceptions of the role of business in achieving the SDGs; and second, to examine university business students’ perceptions of the relationship between greater commitment to achieving the SDGs and business benefits. The analysis was performed with a sample of 178 business-related university students. Amongst the potential contributions made by this study we can highlight the possibility of understanding future managers’ perceptions of the role of business in achieving the SDGs, as well as the benefits that companies could derive from greater commitment to achieving these SDGs and identifying areas for improvement in university education regarding sustainable development. This work was supported by the University Teaching Research Networks Programme of the Institute of Education Sciences of the University of Alicante under Grant XARXES-I3CE-2020-5041.

- Abstract
Knowledge plays a fundamental role in the achievement of business success. This has led to the intensification of the study of the set of intangible assets of the organization called intellectual capital (IC) as well as its impact on the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages over time. Moreover, IC that incorporates sustainable aspects (i.e., green intellectual capital [GIC]) was only recently introduced in the academic literature and has since become an emerging field of study. The lack of consistency in the terminologies used has made it difficult to establish clear measurements of intangibles, especially of the dimensions of IC, which have posed an additional difficulty in advancing this area of knowledge. To overcome this research problem, the authors analyze the origins and conceptualization of IC and GIC, trying to shed light on the field of study by answering the following questions: (1) What are the origins of IC? (2) How is IC defined? (3) What are the origins of GIC? (4) How is GIC defined?

- Abstract
In recent years, interest in intangible assets has grown, and their identification, measurement, and management has become a topical issue. It is considered important to the recognized value of these invisible assets, called intellectual capital (IC), because they add information to traditional financial indicators that are used both to improve decision making and to demonstrate their potential to potential external users. In this context, IC that incorporates environmental and sustainable aspects (i.e., green intellectual capital [GIC] and sustainable intellectual capital [SIC]) were recently introduced in the academic literature to emphasize the importance of sustainable performance. In order to contribute new knowledge to the subject under study, the research aims to answer the following six research questions through a literature review: (1) What are the origins of IC? (2) How is IC defined? (3) What are the origins of GIC? (4) How is GIC defined? (5) What are the origins of SIC? (6) How is SIC defined?

After more than two decades of research on dynamic capabilities, it is quite unusual for empirical works to focus on their study applied to SMEs. Inside this context, our work tries to assess whether or not the dynamic capabilities (DC) of the SMEs positively influence their innovation capacity. The field study was conducted with the population of SMEs located in the city of Machala (Ecuador) and belonging to the trade sector, the sample comprising 109 companies. Our findings in this study show that not every dynamic capability is equally relevant in the Machala-based SMEs, given that while absorptive capacity and learning capacity have a positive and significant effect on innovation, adaptive capacity does not have a significant impact on the innovation processes of the firms under study.
