9. The Effect of Changes in the Aging Temperature Combined with Deep Cryogenic Treatment on the Structure, Phase Composition, and Micromechanical Properties of the WE43 Magnesium Alloy.

Abstract

This paper examines the optimal aging temperature of WE43 alloy that has undergone precipitation hardening in conjunction with deep cryogenic treatment. The microstructure and phase composition were investigated, a microanalysis of the chemical composition was performed, and instrumental indentation tests were performed to determine the parameters of the micro-mechanical properties of the alloy after different heat treatment variants. It has been proven that a decrease in the aging temperature from 250 °C to 225 °C and the introduction of a deep cryogenic treatment lead to favorable changes in the microstructure of the alloy (reduction in grain size, increase in the number, and change in the type of β-phase precipitates). The changes in the alloy structure achieved by lowering the aging temperature contribute to the improvement of the micromechanical properties of the test material. The most advantageous results were recorded for an alloy subjected to solution treatment and aged at 225 °C for 24 h with deep cryogenic treatment: a 30% increase in hardness, a 10% increase in Young's modulus, an improvement in elastic properties, and increased resistance to deformation of the alloy were shown compared to the initial (as-received) state. Raising the aging temperature to 250 °C leads to a phenomenon known as alloy overaging for both alloys after classical precipitation hardening and after deep cryogenic treatment. The results indicate the significant effectiveness of the proposed heat treatment in improving the service life of the Mg-Y-Nd-Zr (WE43) alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article presents the dependence of the morphology as well as micromechanical and sclerometric properties of Al2O3 layers on the parameters of anodizing of aluminum alloys. The oxide layers were produced on the EN AW-5251 aluminum alloy by means of a direct current anodizing in a three-component electrolyte. The input variables (current density and electrolyte temperature) were selected based on the overall design of the experiment. The current density was 1, 2, 3 A/dm2, and the electrolyte temperature was 283, 293, 303 K. The surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and then the microscopic images were analyzed using a graphics program. The micromechanical and sclerometric properties were examined by determining the HIT hardness and three critical loads: Lc1 (critical load at which the first damage of the tested layers occurred-Hertz tensile cracks inside the crack), Lc2 (critical load at which the first cohesive damage of the layers occurred) and Lc3 (load at which the layers were completely damaged). Sclerometric tests with the use of scratch tests were supplemented with pictures from a scanning microscope, showing the scratches. The produced layers are characterized by a hardness above 3 GPa and a porosity of 4.9–10.3%. Such a range of porosity of the produced layers allows their wide application, both for sliding associations with polymers and for their modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dry friction tests were performed using a pin-on-plate tribological tester. In this study, Al2O3 and Al2O3 with MoS2 admixture plate with PEEK/BG pin. Plate surfaces were created using the constant current method and the non-periodic alternating current method. The dimension of Al2O3 fibers walls were calculate based on SEM micrographs. SGP measurements of the oxide layers were made by a Taylor Hobson Talysurf 2D pin profilometer. It was found that the gradient structure favors the reduction of the friction coefficient and weight loss of PEEK/BG in the tested friction pairs, and the method of gradually reducing non-periodic alternating current allowed to obtain a more homogeneous microstructure of aluminum oxide. The use of high current densities at the beginning of the process leads to the production of non-gradient coatings characterized by higher SGP amplitude parameters. This property translates directly into higher wear of the sliding PEEK/BG material and higher values of the friction coefficients of the tribological pairs thus obtained. The research also identified a strong correlation between the friction coefficient μ and surface topography parameters before the tribological cooperation of PEEK/BG pairs - Al2O3 oxide coating.

Abstract

The research presented in the paper was focused on determining the effects of thermal oxidation parameters on the mechanical and tribological properties of oxide layers formed on Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium alloy for biomedical applications. Titanium alloy was oxidized at 600 and 700°C for 72h. The study found that, at lower temperatures, the oxidized alloy surface was covered by a nonuniform oxide layer. A 100°C increase in the treatment temperature yielded a uniform layer covering the whole surface of the alloy. Hardness measurements showed that thermal oxidation resulted in the formation of oxide layers characterized by a 3-fold higher hardness compared to untreated alloy. Tribological tests showed that thermal oxidation effectively improves the resistance of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy to sliding wear. Tribological tests demonstrated that an increased oxidation temperature was associated with improved resistance to sliding wear.

47. Characteristics of the tribological properties of oxide layers obtained via thermal oxidation on titanium Grade 2.

Abstract

Thermal oxidation is an effective technique for modifying the surface of titanium and its alloys in order to improve their poor tribological properties. This paper presents the results of tests concerning titanium Grade 2 subjected to thermal oxidation at 600 ℃ and 700 ℃ for 72 h. The morphology of the surface of the formed oxide scale was determined. The surface of a specimen oxidised at 600 ℃ was unevenly covered by very fine oxide particles. Raising the temperature to 700 ℃ made it possible to cover the entire examined surface with an oxide layer. The obtained scale was characterised by the presence of large irregularly shaped agglomerated oxide particles. Tribological tests showed that the presence of an oxide layer on the surface of titanium significantly improved the resistance of the interacting tribological couple to sliding wear. The obtained 3D isometric images of the trace of wear showed that the formed traces differed in terms of width, depth and shape. It was shown that the area of the cross section of the trace of wear decreased as the temperature of thermal oxidation increased. Scanning electron microscopic observations of traces of wear formed following tribological interaction with an Al2O3 ball showed, in a non-oxidised specimen and a specimen oxidised at 600 ℃, the presence of alternating morphologically varied areas formed as a result of corrugation wear. The oxide layer obtained at 700 ℃ has the highest resistance to sliding wear and completely eliminates the adverse corrugation wear phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Radiation modification with subsequent plastic deformation was conducted in order to increase the resistance of GUR 1050 polymer to plastic deformation and wear. Electron irradiation of 26-156 kGy dose and plastic deformation of the value of ef = 0.2 was applied. It was determined that the crosslink density increase along with the increase of the dose of radiation. It was also found that there is a close relationship between the crosslink density and the mechanical and tribological properties. Tribological tests conducted on the T-05 and T-01 testers have shown that the increase of crosslink density after electron beam irradiation and subsequent plastic deformation result in a 13-fold reduction in linear wear and a 6-fold reduction mass wear as compared to unmodified polyethylenes. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology used for the modification the polymer, which promises the possibility of extending the lifetime of endoprosthesis cups.
