Background: Gynecological malignancies are prevalent, with a high mortality rate. The present is the first report from Somalia regarding the epidemiological and histopathological characteristics of gynecological cancers. Methods: This study reviewed all pathology results obtained from gynecologic patients who underwent various procedures and biopsies over seven years. The investigated parameters were sociodemographic features, histopathological characteristics, and management options, including surgical interventions. Results: The prevalence of gynecological cancers in our study was 7.1%. Among 225 cases with histopathologically confirmed primary gynecological malignancies, cervical and endometrial cancers were the most common (n= 137 and 42, 61% and 18.6%), respectively. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histologic type in cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers. All patients diagnosed with cervical cancer had no history of cervical screening. Approximately 70% of the patients presented in the late stages of the disease. More than half (n=28, 67%) of patients with Endometrioid adenocarcinoma have been found to have other comorbidities, including diabetic Mellitus (n=17, 60.7%) and hypertension (n=11, 39.3%). Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy without pelvic lymphadenectomy were performed in 35/42 patients with endometrial cancer. Conclusions: Cervical carcinoma was the most frequently observed gynecological malignancy during the study period. Majority of our patients presented in the late stages of advanced disease. Lack of adequate knowledge of the disease, poor socioeconomic status, limited resources, and inadequate expertise is believed to be the causes of the late presentation of the patients. Since cervical cancer is a preventable disease, national screening and awareness programs are necessary to reduce the burden of cancer and improve women's health in Somalia.

Traditional healthcare system depends majorly on natural medicinal plants from the environment. These plants produce secondary metabolites which confer on them the various medicinal properties; however, Seasonal fluctuations have impact on their availability and quantity hence their therapeutic efficacy. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of seasonal changes on the quantity of secondary metabolites from Neem and Eucalyptus plants. Leaves and bark of Neem and Eucalyptus plants from SHESTCO, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria, were collected during the four quarters of the year 2019. Samples were dried, milled into powder, quantity of secondary metabolites was estimated and antioxidant activity was analysed using standard methods and protocols. Results from this study showed a variation in secondary metabolite compositions in response to seasons. In both plants’ organs, saponin content peaked and crashed during the second and fourth quarters of the year respectively, while alkaloid had the highest content during the fourth quarter of the year. Highest level of tannin was recorded in the leaf and bark of the plants during the third quarter of the year. Antioxidant activity of both plant extracts showed a regular patterned decrease with increasing concentration, with lowest antioxidant activity for both plants’ organs recorded during the third quarter. Findings of the study indicate that the quantity of inherent secondary metabolites in the medicinal plants and their corresponding antioxidant activity varies in specific manners at different times of the year due to seasonal variation.

Solution of the increasingly important problem of aquatic pollution requires the use of an economical, energy-efficient, highly effective and environmentally-friendly catalyst. Polymeric carbon nitride (C3N4) has shown to be a promising metal-free photocatalyst that however suffers from strong charge recombination and poor conductivity, while MXenes have shown to be perfect co-catalysts for the photocatalytic process but show poor stability. In this study, we successfully constructed a robust heterostructure photocatalyst in which few-layer Ti3C2Tx was embedded into alkalized C3N4 without being oxidized. The photocatalyst showed stable and effective photocatalytic performance for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride and other organic compounds under visible light irradiation. Different characterization methods were used to elucidate the morphology and structure of the as-prepared photocatalyst. The robust heterostructure and the intimate interaction between the two constituents of the composite were verified. Based on the van der Waals heterostructure, Ti3C2Tx acts as the electron acceptor and helps to form Schottky junction, preventing charge recombination of the photocatalyst. And in the meantime, the electrons from C3N4 protect Ti3C2Tx from oxidation. SEM and XRD results demonstrated that the Ti3C2Tx structure remains unchanged after calcination and after photodegradation experiments. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for photocatalytic tetracycline hydrochloride degradation was proposed based on the results of radical scavenging experiments. This work provides a strategy to strengthen heterostructure between 2D materials, and shows that carbon nitride and Mxenes could be promising materials for photocatalytic wastewater pre-treatment applications.

Diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy (DR) via images of colour fundus requires experienced clinicians to determine the presence and importance of a large number of small characteristics. This work proposes and named Adapted Stacked Auto Encoder (ASAE-DNN) a novel deep learning framework for diabetic retinopathy (DR), three hidden layers have been used to extract features and classify them then use a Softmax classification. The models proposed are checked on Messidor's data set, including 800 training images and 150 test images. Exactness, accuracy, time, recall and calculation are assessed for the outcomes of the proposed models. The results of these studies show that the model ASAE-DNN was 97% accurate.

We studied the outcome of 47 adult patients with relapsed acute leukaemia (AML = 25 and ALL = 22) treated with FLAG-mitoxantrone regimen. Median time to relapse was 10.7 months (range 1.9-27.7). Complete remission (CR2) was 60.1% which was significantly more frequent in ALL compared to AML (P = 0.049). WBC count 1 year were significantly predictor for CR2 in AML (P = 0.005 for both). Induction death was significantly higher in ALL compared to AML (P = 0.039). Median follow-up was 4.0 months (0.9-119.8) for AML and 2.1 months (range 0.6-118.1) for ALL. Nine patients underwent allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Estimated overall survival (OS) at 12 and 18 months was 60.5 and 34.6%, respectively, for AML, and 39.9 and 29.9%, respectively, for ALL. For AML patients failure to achieve CR, WBC count at initial diagnosis > 5 × 109/L and poor cytogenetic risk group was significant predictors of poor OS (P = 0.010, P = 0.025, and P = 0.015, respectively).
