In light of NANOGrav data we provide for the first time possible observational signatures of Superstring theory. Firstly, we work with inflection-point inflationary potentials naturally realised within Wess-Zumino type no-scale Supergravity, which give rise to the formation of microscopic primordial black holes (PBHs) triggering an early matter-dominated era (eMD) and evaporating before Big Bang Nucleosythesis (BBN). Remarkably, we obtain an abundant production of primordial gravitational waves (PGW) at the frequency ranges of nHz, Hz and kHz and in strong agreement with Pulsar Time Array (PTA) GW data. Over twenty years ago, Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) [arXiv:astro-ph/9805201, arXiv:astro-ph/9812133] observations revealed an accelerating Universe expansion, suggesting a significant dark energy presence, often modelled as a cosmological constant, $\Lambda$. Despite its pivotal role in cosmology, the standard $\Lambda$CDM model remains largely underexplored in the redshift range between distant SNIa and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This study harnesses the James Webb Space Telescope's advanced capabilities to extend the Hubble flow mapping across an unprecedented redshift range, from $z \approx 0$ to $z \approx 7.5$. Utilising a dataset of 231 HII galaxies and extragalactic HII regions, we employ the $\text{L}-\sigma$ relation, correlating the luminosity of Balmer lines with their velocity dispersion, to define a competitive technique for measuring cosmic distances. This approach maps the Universe's expansion over more than 12 billion years, covering 95\% of its age. Our analysis, using Bayesian inference, constrains the parameter space $\lbrace h, \Omega_m, w_0\rbrace = \lbrace 0.731\pm0.039, 0.302^{+0.12}_{-0.069}, -1.01^{+0.52}_{-0.29}\rbrace $ (statistical) for a flat Universe. Light primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses $M_\mathrm{PBH}<10^9\mathrm{g}$ can interestingly dominate the Universe's energy budget and give rise to early matter-dominated (eMD) eras before Big Bang Nucleosyntesis (BBN). During this eMD era, one is met with an abundant production of induced gravitational waves (GWs) serving as a portal to constrain the underlying theory of gravity. In this work, we study this type of induced GWs within the context of string-inspired running-vaccuum models (StRVMs), which, when expanded around de Sitter backgrounds, include logarithmic corrections of the space-time curvature. In particular, we discuss in detail the effects of StRVMs on the source as well as on the propagation of these PBH-induced GWs. Remarkably, under the assumption that the logarithmic terms represent quantum gravity corrections in the PBH era, we show that GW overproduction can be avoided if one assumes a coefficient of these logarithmic corrections that is much larger than the square of the reduced Planck mass. The latter cannot characterise quantum gravity corrections, though, prompting the need for revision of the quantisation of StRVMs in different than de Sitter backgrounds, such as those characterising PBH-driven eMD eras. We construct Barrow holographic dark energy with varying exponent. Such an energy-scale-dependent behavior is typical in quantum field theory and quantum gravity under renormalization group considerations, however in the present scenario it has an additional justification, since in realistic cases one expects that Barrow entropy quantum-gravitational effects to be stronger at early times and to smooth out and disappear at late times. We impose specific, redshift-dependent ans\"{a}tze for the Barrow running exponent, such as the linear, CPL-like, exponential, and trigonometric ones, and we investigate their cosmological behavior. We show that we can recover the standard thermal history of the universe, with the sequence of matter and dark energy epochs, in which the transition from deceleration to acceleration happens at $z\approx 0.65$, in agreement with observations. In the most realistic case of hyperbolic tangent ansatz, in which we can easily bound Barrow exponent inside its theoretically determined bounds 0 and 1 for all redshifts, we see that the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can be quintessence like, or experience the phantom-divide crossing, while in the future it can either tend to the cosmological constant value or start increasing again. All these features reveal that Barrow holographic dark energy with varying exponent is not only theoretically more justified than the standard, constant-exponent case, but it leads to richer cosmological behavior too., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We use a large set of halo mass function (HMF) models in order to investigate their ability to represent the observational Cluster Mass Function (CMF), derived from the $\mathtt{GalWCat19}$ cluster catalogue, within the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We apply the $\chi^2$ minimization procedure to constrain the free parameters of the models, namely $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$. We find that all HMF models fit well the observational CMF, while the Bocquet et. al. model provides the best fit, with the lowest $\chi^2$ value. Utilizing the {\em Index of Inconsistency} (IOI) measure, we further test the possible inconsistency of the models with respect to a variety of {\em Planck 2018} $\Lambda$CDM cosmologies, resulting from the combination of different probes (CMB - BAO or CMB - DES). We find that the HMF models that fitted well the observed CMF provide consistent cosmological parameters with those of the {\em Planck} CMB analysis, except for the Press $\&$ Schechter, Yahagi et. al., and Despali et. al. models which return large IOI values. The inverse $\chi_{\rm min}^2$-weighted average values of $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$, over all 23 theoretical HMF models are: ${\bar \Omega_{m,0}}=0.313\pm 0.022$ and ${\bar \sigma_8}=0.798\pm0.040$, which are clearly consistent with the results of {\em Planck}-CMB, providing $S_8=\sigma_8\left(\Omega_m/0.3\right)^{1/2}= 0.815\pm 0.05$. The no-scale flipped SU(5) superstring framework constitutes a very promising paradigm for physics below the Planck scale providing us with a very rich cosmological phenomenology in accordance with observations. In particular, it can accommodate Starobinsky-like inflation, followed by a reheating phase, which is driven by a light "flaton" field, and during which the GUT phase transition occurs. In this Letter, we extract for the first time a gravitational-wave (GW) signal which naturally arises in the context of the flipped SU(5) cosmological phenomenology and is related to the existence of an early matter era (eMD) driven by the flaton field. Specifically, we study GWs non-linearly induced by inflationary perturbations and which are abundantly produced during a sudden transition from the flaton-driven eMD era to the late-time radiation-dominated era. Remarkably, we find a GW signal with a characteristic peak frequency $f_\mathrm{GW,peak}$ depending only on the string slope $\alpha'$ and reading as $f_\mathrm{GW,peak} \propto 10^{-9} \left(\frac{\alpha'}{\alpha'_*}\right)^4 \mathrm{Hz}$, where $\alpha'_*$ is the fiducial string slope being related directly to the reduced Planck scale $M_\mathrm{Pl}$ as $\alpha'_* = 8/M^2_\mathrm{Pl}$. We present how Tsallis cosmology can alleviate both $H_0$ and $\sigma_8$ tensions simultaneously. Such a modified cosmological scenario is obtained by the application of the gravity-thermodynamics conjecture, but using the non-additive Tsallis entropy, instead of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking one. Hence, one obtains modified Friedmann equations, with extra terms that depend on the new Tsallis exponent $\delta$ that quantifies the departure from standard entropy. We show that for particular $\delta$ choices we can obtain a phantom effective dark energy, which is known to be one of the sufficient mechanisms that can alleviate $H_0$ tension. Additionally, for the same parameter choice we obtain an increased friction term and an effective Newton's constant smaller than the usual one, and thus the $\sigma_8$ tension is also solved. In this Letter, we derive for the first time a characteristic three-peaked GW signal within the framework of no-scale Supergravity, being the low-energy limit of Superstring theory. We concentrate on the primordial gravitational wave (GW) spectrum induced due to second-order gravitational interactions by inflationary curvature perturbations as well as by isocurvature energy density perturbations of primordial black holes (PBHs) both amplified due to the presence of an early matter-dominated era (eMD) era before Big Bang Nucleosythesis (BBN). In particular, we work with inflection-point inflationary potentials naturally-realised within Wess-Zumino type no-scale Supergravity and giving rise to the formation of microscopic PBHs triggering an eMD era and evaporating before BBN. Primordial black holes (PBHs) forming out of the collapse of enhanced cosmological perturbations provide access to the early Universe through their associated observational signatures. In particular, enhanced cosmological perturbations collapsing to form PBHs are responsible for the generation of a stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) induced by second-order gravitational interactions, usually called scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs). This SGWB is sensitive to the underlying gravitational theory; hence it can be used as a novel tool to test the standard paradigm of gravity and constrain possible deviations from general relativity. In this work, we study the aforementioned GW signal within modified teleparallel gravity theories, developing a formalism for the derivation of the GW spectral abundance within any form of gravitational action. At the end, working within viable $f(T,\phi)$ models without matter-gravity couplings, and accounting for the effect of mono-parametric $f(T)$ gravity at the level of the source and the propagation of the tensor perturbations, we show that the respective GW signal is indistinguishable from that within GR. Interestingly, we find that in order to break the degeneracy between different $f(T)$ theories through the portal of SIGWs one should necessarily consider non-minimal matter-gravity couplings at the level of the gravitational action., Comment: To appear in Physical Review D

We present current and future activities regarding lunar impact flash and NEO observations and satellite tracking from Kryoneri Observatory. In particular, we present results from the ESA-funded NELIOTA program, which has been monitoring the Moon for impact flashes since early 2017. Using the 1.2 m Kryoneri telescope, which is equipped with two high frame-rate cameras recording simultaneously in two optical bands, NELIOTA has recorded over 170 validated lunar impact flashes, while another ~90 have been characterized as suspected. We present statistical results concerning the sizes, the masses and the appearance frequency of the meteoroids in the vicinity of the Earth, as well as the temperatures developed during the impacts. Moreover, we present the capabilities of the Kryoneri telescope as a sensor for satellite tracking and the future plans regarding the provision of high-quality services for both the Planetary Defense activities of ESA (S2P/PDO) and the European Union's Space Surveillance and Tracking programme (EU/SST)., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures. We investigate sufficient conditions under which cubic gravity is healthy and viable at the perturbation level. We perform a detailed analysis of the scalar and tensor perturbations. We impose the requirement that the two scalar potentials, whose ratio is the post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$, should deviate only minimally form general relativity. Additionally, concerning tensor perturbations we impose satisfaction of the LIGO-VIRGO and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst observations, and thus we result to a gravitational-wave equation with gravitational-wave speed equal to the speed of light, and where the only deviation from general relativity appears in the dispersion relation. Furthermore, we show that cubic gravity exhibits an effective Newton's constant that depends on the model parameter, on the background evolution, and on the wavenumber scale. Hence, by requiring its deviation from the standard Newton's constant to be within observational bounds we extract the constraints on the single coupling parameter $\beta$., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, version published in Eur.Phys.J.C

We construct new classes of modified theories in which the matter sector couples with the Einstein tensor, namely we consider direct couplings of the latter to the energy-momentum tensor, and to the derivatives of its trace. We extract the general field equations, which do not contain higher-order derivatives, and we apply them in a cosmological framework, obtaining the Friedmann equations, whose extra terms give rise to an effective dark energy sector. At the background level we show that we can successfully describe the usual thermal history of the universe, with the sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, while the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can lie in the phantom regime, tending progressively to $-1$ at present and future times. Furthermore, we confront the theory with Cosmic Chronometer data, showing that the agreement is very good. Finally, we perform a detailed investigation of scalar and tensor perturbations, and extracting an approximate evolution equation for the matter overdensity we show that the predicted behavior is in agreement with observations., Comment: 9 pages,4 figures, to appear in Phys. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, scheduled for launch in the mid-2030s, is a gravitational wave observatory in space designed to detect sources emitting in the millihertz band. LISA is an ESA flagship mission, currently entering the Phase B development phase. It is expected to help us improve our understanding about our Universe by measuring gravitational wave sources of different types, with some of the sources being at very high redshifts $z\sim 20$. On the 23rd of February 2022 we organized the 1$^\mathrm{st}$ {\it LISA in Greece Workshop}. This workshop aimed to inform the Greek scientific and tech industry community about the possibilities of participating in LISA science and LISA mission, with the support of the Hellenic Space Center (HSC). In this white paper, we summarize the outcome of the workshop, the most important aspect of it being the inclusion of $15$ Greek researchers to the LISA Consortium, raising our total number to $22$. At the same time, we present a road-map with the future steps and actions of the Greek Gravitational Wave community with respect to the future LISA mission., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

We confront $f(T,T_G)$ gravity, with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) requirements. The former is obtained using both the torsion scalar, as well as the teleparallel equivalent of the Gauss-Bonnet term, in the Lagrangian, resulting to modified Friedmann equations in which the extra torsional terms constitute an effective dark energy sector. We calculate the deviations of the freeze-out temperature $T_f$, caused by the extra torsion terms in comparison to $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. Then we impose five specific $f(T,T_G)$ models and we extract the constraints on the model parameters in order for the ratio $|\Delta T_f/ T_f|$ to satisfy the observational BBN bound. As we find, in most of the models the involved parameters are bounded in a narrow window around their General Relativity values as expected, as in the power-law model where the exponent $n$ needs to be $n\lesssim 0.5$. Nevertheless the logarithmic model can easily satisfy the BBN constraints for large regions of the model parameters. In this paper we explore the use of spatial clustering algorithms as a new computational approach for modeling the cosmic web. We demonstrate that such algorithms are efficient in terms of computing time needed. We explore three distinct spatial methods which we suitably adjust for (i) detecting the topology of the cosmic web and (ii) categorizing various cosmic structures as voids, walls, clusters and superclusters based on a variety of topological and physical criteria such as the physical distance between objects, their masses and local densities. The methods explored are (1) a new spatial method called Gravity Lattice ; (2) a modified version of another spatial clustering algorithm, the ABACUS; and (3) the well known spatial clustering algorithm HDBSCAN. We utilize HDBSCAN in order to detect cosmic structures and categorize them using their overdensity. We demonstrate that the ABACUS method can be combined with the classic DTFE method to obtain similar results in terms of the achieved accuracy with about an order of magnitude less computation time. To further solidify our claims, we draw insights from the computer science domain and compare the quality of the results with and without the application of our method. Finally, we further extend our experiments and verify their effectiveness by showing their ability to scale well with different cosmic web structures that formed at different redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

The $f(Q)$ theories of modified gravity arise from the consideration of non-metricity as the basic geometric quantity, and have been proven to be very efficient in describing the late-time Universe. We use the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) formalism and observations in order to extract constraints on various classes of f(Q) models. In particular, we calculate the deviations that f(Q) terms bring on the freeze-out temperature in comparison to that of the standard $\Lambda CDM$ evolution, and then we impose the observational bound on $ |\frac{\delta {T}_f}{{T}_f}|$ to extract constraints on the involved parameters of the considered models. Concerning the polynomial model, we show that the exponent parameter should be negative, while for the power-exponential model and the new hyperbolic tangent - power model we find that they pass the BBN constraints trivially. Finally, we examine two DGP-like $f(Q)$ models, and we extract the bounds on their model parameters. Since many gravitational modifications, although able to describe the late-time evolution of the Universe, produce too-much modification at early times and thus fall to pass the BBN confrontation, the fact that $f(Q)$ gravity can safely pass the BBN constraints is an important advantage of this modified gravity class., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Primordial black hole (PBH) fluctuations can induce a stochastic gravitational wave background at second order, and since this procedure is sensitive to the underlying gravitational theory it can be used as a novel tool to test general relativity and extract constraints on possible modified gravity deviations. We apply this formalism in the framework of $f(T)$ gravity, considering three viable mono-parametric models. In particular, we investigate the induced modifications at the level of the gravitational-wave source, which is encoded in terms of the power spectrum of the PBH gravitational potential, as well as at the level of their propagation, described in terms of the Green function which quantifies the propagator of the tensor perturbations. We find that, within the observationally allowed range of the $f(T)$ model-parameters, the obtained deviations from general relativity, both at the levels of source and propagation, are practically negligible. Hence, we conclude that realistic and viable $f(T)$ theories can safely pass the primordial black hole constraints, which may offer an additional argument in their favor., Comment: Published in Eur. We present a unified description of the matter and dark energy epochs, using a class of scalar-torsion theories. We provide a Hamiltonian description, and by applying Noether's theorem and by requiring the field equations to admit linear-in-momentum conservation laws we obtain two specific classes of scalar-field potentials. We extract analytic solutions and we perform a detailed dynamical analysis. We show that the system possesses critical points that correspond to scaling solutions in which the effective, total equation-of-state parameter is close to zero and points in which it is equal to the cosmological constant value $-1$. Therefore, during evolution, the Universe remains for sufficiently long times at the epoch corresponding to dust-matter domination, while at later times it enters the accelerated epoch and it eventually results in the de Sitter phase. Finally, in contrast to other unified scenarios, such as Chaplygin gas-based models as well as Horndeski-based constructions, the present scenario is free from instabilities and pathologies at the perturbative level., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. We perform a dynamical system analysis of Myrzakulov or F(R, T) gravity, which is a subclass of affinely connected metric theories, where ones uses a specific but non-special connection, which allows for non-zero curvature and torsion simultaneously. We consider two classes of models, we extract the critical points, and we examine their stability properties alongside their physical features. In the Class 1 models, which possess {\Lambda}CDM cosmology as a limit, we find the sequence of matter and dark energy eras, and we show that the Universe will result in a dark-energy dominated critical point for which dark energy behaves like a cosmological constant. Concerning the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter we find that it lies in the quintessence or phantom regime, according to the value of the model parameter. For the Class 2 models, we again find the dark-energy dominated, de Sitter late-time attractor, although the scenario does not possess {\Lambda}CDM cosmology as a limit. The cosmological behavior is richer, and the dark-energy sector can be quintessence-like, phantom-like, or experience the phantom-divide crossing during the evolution., Comment: To appear in Phys. The gravitational potential of a gas of initially randomly distributed primordial black holes (PBH) can induce a stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background through second-order gravitational effects. This GW background can be abundantly generated in a cosmic era dominated by ultralight primordial black holes, with masses $m_\mathrm{PBH}<10^{9}\mathrm{g}$. In this work, we consider $f(R)$ gravity as the underlying gravitational theory and we study its effect at the level of the gravitational potential of Poisson distributed primordial black holes. After a general analysis, we focus on the $R^2$ gravity model. In particular, by requiring that the scalar induced GWs (SIGWs) are not overproduced, we find an upper bound on the abundance of PBHs at formation time $\Omega_\mathrm{PBH,f}$ as a function of their mass, namely that $\Omega_\mathrm{PBH,f}<5.5\times 10^{-5}\left(\frac{10^9\mathrm{g}}{m_\mathrm{PBH}}\right)^{1/4}$, which is $45\%$ tighter than the respective upper bound in general relativity. Afterwards, by considering $R^2$ gravity as an illustrative case study of an $f(R)$ gravity model, we also set upper bound constraints on its mass parameter $M$. These mass parameter constraints, however, should not be regarded as physical given the fact that the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) constraints on $R^2$ gravity are quite tight. Finally, we conclude that the portal of SIGWs associated to PBH Poisson fluctuations can act as a novel complementary probe to constrain alternative gravity theories., Comment: Accepted in JCAP

We use Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data in order to impose constraints on higher-order modified gravity, and in particular on: (i) $f(G)$ Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and $f(P)$ cubic gravities, arising respectively through the use of the quadratic-curvature Gauss-Bonnet $G$ term, and the cubic-curvature combination, (ii) string-inspired quadratic Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to the dilaton field, (iii) models with string-inspired quartic curvature corrections, and (iv) running vacuum models. We perform a detailed investigation of the BBN epoch and we calculate the deviations of the freeze-out temperature $T_f$ in comparison to $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. We then use the observational bound on $ \left|\frac{\delta {T}_f}{{T}_f}\right|$ in order to extract constraints on the involved parameters of various models. We find that all models can satisfy the BBN constraints and thus they constitute viable cosmological scenarios, since they can additionally account for the dark energy sector and the late-time acceleration, in a quantitative manner, without spoiling the formation of light elements during the BBN epoch. Soft cosmology is an extension of standard cosmology allowing for a scale-dependent equation-of-state (EoS) parameter in the dark sectors, which is one of the properties of soft materials in condensed-matter physics, that may arise either intrinsically or effectively. We use data from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Supernovae Type Ia (SNIa), and Redshift space distrotion (RSD) probes, in order to impose observational constraints on soft dark energy and soft dark matter. We examine three simple models, corresponding to the minimum extensions of $\Lambda$CDM scenario, namely we consider that at large scales the dark sectors have the EoS's of $\Lambda$CDM model (dust dark matter and cosmological constant respectively), while at intermediate scales either dark energy or dark matter or both, may have a different EoS according to constant "softness" parameters $s_{de}$ and $s_{dm}$. The observational confrontation shows that for almost all datasets the softness parameters deviate from their $\Lambda$CDM values, in a prominent way for soft dark energy and mildly for soft dark matter, and thus the data favor soft cosmology. We apply the formalism of dynamical system analysis to investigate the evolution of interacting dark energy scenarios at the background and perturbation levels in a unified way. Since the resulting dynamical system contains the extra perturbation variable related to the matter overdensity, the critical points of the background analysis split, corresponding to different behavior of matter perturbations, and hence to stability properties. From the combined analysis, we find critical points that describe the non-accelerating matter-dominated epoch with the correct growth of matter structure, and the fact that they are saddle provides the natural exit from this phase. Furthermore, we find stable attractors at late times corresponding to a dark energy-dominated accelerated solution with constant matter perturbations, as required by observations. Thus, interacting cosmology can describe the matter and dark energy epochs correctly, both at the background and perturbation levels, which reveals the capabilities of the interaction., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, version to appear in Phys.Rev.D

We show that the $H_0$ tension can be alleviated in the framework of Horndeski/generalized galileon gravity. In particular, since the terms depending on $G_5$ control the friction in the Friedmann equation, we construct specific sub-classes in which it depends only on the field's kinetic energy. Since the latter is small at high redshifts, namely at redshifts which affected the CMB structure, the deviations from $\Lambda$CDM cosmology are negligible, however as time passes it increases and thus at low redshifts the Hubble function acquires increased values in a controlled way. We consider two Models, one with quadratic and one with quartic dependence on the field's kinetic energy. In both cases we show the alleviation of the tension, resulting to $H_0 \approx 74$ km/s/Mpc for particular parameter choices. Finally, we examine the behavior of scalar metric perturbations, showing that the conditions for absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities are fulfilled throughout the evolution, and we confront the models with SNIa data., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.D

We apply the gravity-thermodynamics conjecture, namely the first law of thermodynamics on the Universe horizon, but using the generalized Kaniadakis entropy instead of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking one. The former is a one-parameter generalization of the classical Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon entropy, arising from a coherent and self-consistent relativistic statistical theory. We obtain new modified cosmological scenarios, namely modified Friedmann equations, which contain new extra terms that constitute an effective dark energy sector depending on the single model Kaniadakis parameter $K$. We investigate the cosmological evolution, by extracting analytical expressions for the dark energy density and equation-of-state parameters and we show that the Universe exhibits the usual thermal history, with a transition redshift from deceleration to acceleration at around 0.6. Furthermore, depending on the value of $K$, the dark energy equation-of-state parameter deviates from $\Lambda$CDM cosmology at small redshifts, while lying always in the phantom regime, and at asymptotically large times the Universe always results in a dark-energy dominated, de Sitter phase. Finally, even in the case where we do not consider an explicit cosmological constant the resulting cosmology is very interesting and in agreement with the observed behavior., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We place novel constraints on the cosmokinetic parameters by using a joint analysis of the newest VLT-KMOS HII galaxies (HIIG) with the Supernovae Type Ia (SNIa) Pantheon sample. We combine the latter datasets in order to reconstruct, in a model-independent way, the Hubble diagram to as high redshifts as possible. Using a Gaussian process we derive the basic cosmokinetic parameters and compare them with those of $\Lambda$CDM. In the case of SNIa, we find that the extracted values of the cosmokinetic parameters are in agreement with the predictions of $\Lambda$CDM model. Combining SNIa with high redshift tracers of the Hubble relation, namely HIIG data, we obtain consistent results with those based on $\Lambda$CDM as far as the present values of the cosmokinetic parameters are concerned, but find significant deviations in the evolution of the cosmokinetic parameters with respect to the expectations of the concordance $\Lambda$CDM model., Comment: Match the version published in MNRAS

We present novel cosmological constraints based on a joint analysis of our HII galaxies (HIIG) Hubble relation with the full Planck Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy spectrum and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) probes. The HII galaxies span a large redshift range $(0.088 \le z \le 2.5)$, reaching significantly higher redshifts than available SNIa and hence they probe the cosmic expansion at earlier times. Our independent constraints compare well with those based on the Pantheon compilation of SNIa data, which we also analyse. We find our results to be in agreement with the conformal $\Lambda$CDM model within 1$\sigma$. We also use our HIIG data to examine the behaviour of the dark energy equation of state parameter under the CPL parameterisation, $w = w_0+w_a \frac{z}{1+z}$, and find consistent results with those based on SNIa, although the degeneracy in the parameter space as well as the individual parameter uncertainties, when marginalizing one over the other, are quite large., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We present independent determinations of cosmological parameters using the distance estimator based on the established correlation between the Balmer line luminosity, L(H$\beta$), and the velocity dispersion ($\sigma$) for HII galaxies (HIIG). These results are based on new VLT-KMOS high spectral resolution observations of 41 high-z ($1.3 \leq$ z $\leq 2.6$) HIIG combined with published data for 45 high-z and 107 z $\leq 0.15$ HIIG, while the cosmological analysis is based on the MultiNest MCMC procedure not considering systematic uncertainties. Using only HIIG to constrain the matter density parameter ($\Omega_m$), we find $\Omega_m = 0.244^{+0.040}_{-0.049}$ (stat), an improvement over our best previous cosmological parameter constraints, as indicated by a 37% increase of the FoM. The marginalised best-fit parameter values for the plane $\{\Omega_m; w_0\}$ = $\{0.249^{+0.11}_{-0.065}; -1.18^{+0.45}_{-0.41}\}$ (stat) show an improvement of the cosmological parameters constraints by 40%. Combining the HIIG Hubble diagram, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) probes yields $\Omega_m=0.298 \pm 0.012$ and $w_0=-1.005 \pm 0.051$, which are certainly compatible -- although less constraining -- than the solution based on the joint analysis of SNIa/CMB/BAO. We propose a novel model in the framework of $f(Q)$ gravity, which is a gravitational modification class arising from the incorporation of non-metricity. The model has General Relativity as a particular limit, it has the same number of free parameters to those of $\Lambda$CDM, however at a cosmological framework it gives rise to a scenario that does not have $\Lambda$CDM as a limit. Nevertheless, confrontation with observations at both background and perturbation levels, namely with Supernovae type Ia (SNIa), Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), cosmic chronometers (CC), and Redshift Space Distortion (RSD) data, reveals that the scenario, according to AIC, BIC and DIC information criteria, is in some datasets slightly preferred comparing to $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, although in all cases the two models are statistically indiscriminate. We construct Barrow holographic dark energy in the case of non-flat universe. In particular, considering closed and open spatial geometry we extract the differential equations that determine the evolution of the dark-energy density parameter, and we provide the analytical expression for the corresponding dark energy equation-of-state parameter. We show that the scenario can describe the thermal history of the universe, with the sequence of matter and dark energy epochs. Comparing to the flat case, where the phantom regime is obtained for relative large Barrow exponents, the incorporation of positive curvature leads the universe into the phantom regime for significantly smaller values. Additionally, in the case of negative curvature we find a reversed behavior, namely for increased Barrow exponent we acquire algebraically higher dark-energy equation-of-state parameters. Furthermore, we confront the scenario with Hubble parameter measurements and supernova type Ia data. We use data from Supernovae (SNIa) Pantheon sample, from Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and from cosmic chronometers measurements of the Hubble parameter (CC), alongside arguments from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), in order to extract constraints on Myrzakulov $F(R,T)$ gravity. This is a connection-based theory belonging to the Riemann-Cartan subclass, that uses a specific but non-special connection, which then leads to extra degrees of freedom. Our analysis shows that both considered models lead to $\sim 1 \sigma$ compatibility in all cases. For the involved dimensionless parameter we find that it is constrained to an interval around zero, however the corresponding contours are slightly shifted towards positive values. Furthermore, we use the obtained parameter chains so to reconstruct the corresponding Hubble function, as well as the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter, as a function of redshift. As we show, Model 1 is very close to $\Lambda$CDM scenario, while Model 2 resembles it at low redshifts, however at earlier times deviations are allowed. Finally, applying the AIC, BIC and the combined DIC criteria, we deduce that both models present a very efficient fitting behavior, and are statistically equivalent with $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, despite the fact that Model 2 does not contain the latter as a limit., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 2 Tables, version published in Phys.Rev.D

We use Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data in order to impose constraints on the exponent of Barrow entropy. The latter is an extended entropy relation arising from the incorporation of quantum-gravitational effects on the black-hole structure, parameterized effectively by the new parameter $\Delta$. When considered in a cosmological framework and under the light of the gravity-thermodynamics conjecture, Barrow entropy leads to modified cosmological scenarios whose Friedmann equations contain extra terms. We perform a detailed analysis of the BBN era and we calculate the deviation of the freeze-out temperature comparing to the result of standard cosmology. We use the observationally determined bound on $ |\frac{\delta {T}_f}{{T}_f}|$ in order to extract the upper bound on $\Delta$. As we find, the Barrow exponent should be inside the bound $\Delta\lesssim 1.4\times 10^{-4}$ in order not to spoil the BBN epoch, which shows that the deformation from standard Bekenstein-Hawking expression should be small as expected., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

The current cosmological probes have provided a fantastic confirmation of the standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model, that has been constrained with unprecedented accuracy. However, with the increase of the experimental sensitivity a few statistically significant tensions between different independent cosmological datasets emerged. While these tensions can be in portion the result of systematic errors, the persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the need for new physics. In this Letter of Interest we will focus on the $4.4\sigma$ tension between the Planck estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. While new physics could be in action, this anomaly may be the result of an unresolved systematic error or just a statistical fluctuation. The standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides a wonderful fit to current cosmological data, but a few tensions and anomalies became statistically significant with the latest data analyses. While these anomalies could be due to the presence of systematic errors in the experiments, they could also indicate the need for new physics beyond the standard model. In this Letter of Interest we focus on the tension of the Planck data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). The standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides an amazing description of a wide range of astrophysical and astronomical data. However, there are a few big open questions, that make the standard model look like a first-order approximation to a more realistic scenario that still needs to be fully understood. In this Letter of Interest we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances present between the different cosmological probes, as the Hubble constant $H_0$ value, the $\sigma_8 - S_8$ tension, and the anomalies present in the Planck results. We elaborate further on the compatibility of the "vacuumon potential" that characterises the inflationary phase of the Running Vacuum Model (RVM) with the Swampland criteria. The work is motivated by the fact that, as demonstrated recently by the authors [1-3], the RVM framework can be derived as an effective gravitational field theory stemming from underlying microscopic (critical) string theory models with gravitational anomalies, involving condensation of primordial gravitational waves. Although believed to be a classical scalar field description, not representing a fully fledged quantum field, nonetheless we show here that the vacuumon potential satisfies certain Swampland criteria for the relevant regime of parameters and field range. We link the criteria to the Gibbons-Hawking entropy that has been argued to characterise the RVM during the de Sitter phase. These results imply that the vacuumon may, after all, admit under certain conditions, a r\^ole as a quantum field during the inflationary (almost de Sitter) phase of the running vacuum. The conventional slow-roll interpretation of this field, however, fails just because it satisfies the Swampland criteria. The RVM effective theory derived from the low-energy effective action of string theory does, however, successfully describe inflation thanks to the $\sim H^4$ terms induced by the gravitational anomalous condensates. In addition, the stringy version of the RVM involves the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion field, which, in contrast to the vacuumon, does perfectly satisfy the slow-roll condition. We use observational data from Supernovae (SNIa) Pantheon sample, as well as from direct measurements of the Hubble parameter from the cosmic chronometers (CC) sample, in order to extract constraints on the scenario of Barrow holographic dark energy. The latter is a holographic dark energy model based on the recently proposed Barrow entropy, which arises from the modification of the black-hole surface due to quantum-gravitational effects. We first consider the case where the new deformation exponent $\Delta$ is the sole model parameter, and we show that although the standard value $\Delta=0$, which corresponds to zero deformation, lies within the 1$\sigma$ region, a deviation is favored. In the case where we let both $\Delta$ and the second model parameter to be free we find that a deviation from standard holographic dark energy is preferred. Additionally, applying the Akaike, Bayesian and Deviance Information Criteria, we conclude that the one-parameter model is statistically compatible with $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, and preferred comparing to the two-parameter one. We study the kinematics of the giant H II regions NGC 5455 and NGC 5471 located in the galaxy M101, using integral field observations that include the Hbeta and [O III] 5007 emission lines, obtained with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. We analyse the line profiles using both single and multiple Gaussian curves, gathering evidence for the presence of several expanding shells and moving filaments. The line decomposition shows that a broad (sigma = 30-50 km/s) underlying component is ubiquitous, extending across hundreds of pc, while a large fraction of the narrow components have subsonic line widths. The supersonic turbulence inferred from the global line profiles is consistent with the velocity dispersion of the individual narrow components, i.e. the global profiles likely arise from the combined contribution of discrete gas clouds. We confirm the presence of very extended (400 - 1200 km/s) low-intensity line components in three bright star-forming cores in NGC 5471, possibly representing kinematic signatures of supernova remnants. For one of these, the known supernova remnant host NGC 5471 B, we find a significantly reduced [O III]/Hbeta line ratio relative to the surrounding photoionized gas, due to the presence of a radiative shock at low metallicity. We explore the systematic width discrepancy between H I and [O III] lines, present in both global and individual spaxel spectra. We argue that the resolution of this long-standing problem lies in the physics of the line-emitting gas rather than in the smearing effects induced by the different thermal widths., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures. We investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics, applying Barrow entropy for the horizon entropy. The former arises from the fact that the black-hole surface may be deformed due to quantum-gravitational effects, quantified by a new exponent $\Delta$. We calculate the entropy time-variation in a universe filled with the matter and dark energy fluids, as well as the corresponding quantity for the apparent horizon. We show that although in the case $\Delta=0$, which corresponds to usual entropy, the sum of the entropy enclosed by the apparent horizon plus the entropy of the horizon itself is always a non-decreasing function of time and thus the generalized second law of thermodynamics is valid, in the case of Barrow entropy this is not true anymore, and the generalized second law of thermodynamics may be violated, depending on the universe evolution. In this article, we elaborate further on the $\Lambda$CDM "tension", suggested recently by the authors \cite{Lusso:2019akb,Risaliti:2018reu}. We combine Supernovae type Ia (SNIa) with quasars (QSO) and Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) data in order to reconstruct a model independent Hubble diagram to as high redshifts as possible. Specifically, in the case of either SNIa or SNIa/QSO data, we find that current values of the cosmokinetic parameters extracted from the Gaussian process are consistent with those of $\Lambda$CDM. Including GRBs, in the analysis, we find a tension, which however is not as significant as that mentioned in \cite{Lusso:2019akb, Risaliti:2018reu}. The existence or not of pathologies in the context of Lagrangian theory is studied with the aid of Machine Learning algorithms. Using an example in the framework of classical mechanics, we make a proof of concept, that the construction of new physical theories using machine learning is possible. Specifically, we utilize a fully-connected, feed-forward neural network architecture, aiming to discriminate between ``healthy'' and ``non-healthy'' Lagrangians, without explicitly extracting the relevant equations of motion. The network, after training, is used as a fitness function in the concept of a genetic algorithm and new healthy Lagrangians are constructed. These new Lagrangians are different from the Lagrangians contained in the initial data set. Hence, searching for Lagrangians possessing a number of pre-defined properties is significantly simplified within our approach. We investigate the recently introduced metastable dark energy (DE) models after the final Planck 2018 legacy release. The essence of the present work is to analyze their evolution at the level of perturbations. Our analyses show that both the metastable dark energy models considered in this article, are excellent candidates to alleviate the $H_0$ tension. In particular, for the present models, Planck 2018 alone can alleviate the $H_0$ tension within 68\% CL. In this letter, we elaborate further on a Cosmological "Running-Vacuum" type model for the Universe, suggested previously by the authors within the context of a string-inspired effective theory in the presence of a Kalb-Ramond (KR) gravitational axion field which descends from the antisymmetric tensor of the massless gravitational string multiplet. In the presence of this field, which has anomalous CP violating interactions with the gravitons, primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which in turn are responsible for the appearance of $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the vacuum energy density, these terms being characteristic of generic "running-vacuum-model (RVM) type", where $H$ is the Hubble parameter. In this work we prove in detail the appearance of the $H^4$ terms due to gravitational-anomaly-induced condensates in the energy density of the primordial Universe, which can self-consistently induce inflation, and subsequent exit from it, according to the generic features of RVM. We also argue in favour of the robustness of our results, which were derived within an effective low-energy field theory approach, against Ultra Violet completion of the theory. During the radiation and matter-dominated eras, gravitational anomalies cancel, as required for the consistency of the quantum matter/radiation field theory. However, chiral and QCD-axion-type anomalies survive and have important consequences for both cosmic magnetogenesis and axionic dark matter in the Universe. Finally, the stringy RVM scenario presented here predicts quintessence-like dynamical dark energy for the current Universe, which is compatible with the existing fitting analyses of such model against observations, Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We study the dynamical properties of a large body of varying vacuum cosmologies for which dark matter interacts with vacuum. In particular, performing the critical point analysis we investigate the existence and the stability of cosmological solutions which describe de-Sitter, radiation and matter dominated eras. We use observational data from Supernovae (SNIa) Pantheon sample, from direct Hubble constant measurements with cosmic chronometers (CC), from the Cosmic Microwave Background shift parameter $\text{CMB}_{\text{shift}}$, and from redshift space distortion ($f\sigma_8$) measurements, in order to constrain $f(T)$ gravity. We do not follow the common $\gamma$ parameterization within the semi-analytical approximation of the growth rate, in order to avoid model-dependent uncertainties. Up to our knowledge this is the first time that $f(T)$ gravity is analyzed within a Bayesian framework, and with background and perturbation behaviour considered jointly. We show that all three examined $f(T)$ models are able to describe adequately the $f\sigma_8$ data. We present a model for the Universe in which quantum anomalies are argued to play an important dual role: they are responsible for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry, but also provide time-dependent contributions to the vacuum energy density of "running-vacuum" type, which drive the Universe evolution. During the inflationary phase of a string-inspired Universe, and its subsequent exit, the existence of primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which couple to the Kalb-Ramond (KR)axion field of the massless gravitational string multiplet. Such anomalous CP violating interactions have two important effects: first, they lead to contributions to the vacuum energy density of the form appearing in the "running vacuum model" (RVM) framework, proportional to both the square and the fourth power of the effective Hubble parameter $H$, the $H^4$ terms being associated with anomaly-induced inflation within the RVM framework. Second, there is an undiluted KR axion at the end of inflation, which plays an important role in generating matter-antimatter asymmetry through baryogenesis via leptogenesis in models with heavy right handed neutrinos. As the Universe exits inflation and enters a radiation dominated era, the generation of chiral fermionic matter is responsible for the cancellation of gravitational anomalies, thus restoring diffeomorphism invariance for the matter/radiation (quantum) theory, as required for consistency. Chiral U(1) anomalies may remain uncompensated, though, during matter/radiation dominance, providing RVM-like $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the Universe energy density. Finally, in the current era, gravitational anomalies resurface, leading to much weaker RVM-like $H_0^2$ contributions to the vacuum energy density.Our model favours axionic Dark Matter,the source of which can be the KR axion., Comment: 76 pages revtex, no figures; minor typos corrections as compared to previous version.
