Increased urbanization and population lead to increased consumption of manufactured goods. This ultimately results in increased production of waste. Identifying its composition is crucial for planning an effective solid waste management strategy. This study assesses the characteristics and composition of the waste generated within the Uyo Capital City Development Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This is to aid in developing a scientifically supported waste management pilot system for the state. Direct waste sorting and characterization were conducted on the municipal solid waste arriving at the landfill during the study period. Over 50% of the generated wastes are recyclables and composed of plastics, metals, and paper, while the fraction of organic waste is over 30%. Similarly, the waste generation per capita is 1.34 kg/person/day, while the generation forecast over the next ten years is estimated to increase by approximately 40%. Furthermore, over 9,000 surveys were completed by residents to establish a problem statement about the existing waste collection and disposal system, and possible solutions. Importantly, a majority of survey respondents were willing to source-separate their wastes and supported paying a fee for adequate waste collection. This strongly indicates that an integrated waste management system could be established to generate value from the collected waste. Over the decades, the aquaculture sector has witnessed substantial growth, contributing significantly to the nation's economy. However, the menace of CyanoHABs threatens the sustainability of fish farming. Considering the possible hazards linked to cyanotoxins in food and water, a comparative study design between commercial fish in Nigeria and South Africa was employed to investigate cyanotoxins in the water from fishponds. Six commercial fishponds in Calabar Municipality—Nigeria and Duthuni—South Africa with varying climatic zones were selected. Water samples from the ponds were collected at intervals during different seasons (summer, winter, dry, and wet seasons) to capture climate-induced variation. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS) in combination with the metabolites database was used for the identification of toxic cyanometabolites in water samples. The molecular networking approach, coupled with the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) database and CANOPUS annotation, enabled the putative identification of cyanometabolites. The resulting molecular network unveiled discernible clusters representing related molecule families, aiding in the identification of both known cyanotoxins and unfamiliar analogues. Furthermore, the molecular network revealed that water samples from different fishponds shared specific metabolites, including ethanesulfonic acid, pheophorbide A, cholic acid, phenylalanine, amyl amine, phosphocholine (PC), and sulfonic acid, despite variations in location, local climatic factors, and sampling sites. The fishponds in Nigeria showed the presence of multiple cyanotoxin classes in the dry, wet, and summer seasons in the water. Aflatoxin was identified in all sampling sites in Nigeria (N1, N2, and N3). The Duthuni, South Africa, sampling sites (P1, P2, and P3) exhibited the presence of microginins and microcystins. All the fishponds displayed a widespread occurrence of anabaenopeptins, aplysiatoxins, aflatoxin, microcolins, and marabmids during the selected summer. In conclusion, the untargeted metabolome analysis, guided by GNPS, proved highly effective in identifying both toxic and non-toxic metabolites in fishponds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The biological synthesis of functionalised nanoparticles using plant materials is considered more cost‐effective and eco‐friendly than chemical and physical methods. Hence, this study demonstrated the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Houttuynia cordata Thunb rhizome (HCR). The extract, prepared with distilled water, provided the required phytochemical components, such as flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, proteins and other essential bio‐reducing agents. The AgNPs were exposed to reaction conditions, such as temperatures, pH values and AgNO3 concentrations, to identify the optimum synthesis condition and explore their impacts on particle size and antibacterial action against Gram‐positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram‐negative (Salmonella enterica and Shigella dysenteriae) foodborne pathogens. The formation of AgNPs was indicated by specific surface plasmon resonance (SPR) intensity at 440–450 nm and colour changes under different reaction conditions. The structure and size distribution characterised by SEM and TEM revealed that the AgNPs exhibited a spherical‐shaped structure with irregular contours, regular distribution and aggregation. Although the average particle size ranged from 2 to 100 nm, relatively smaller sizes were detected at 10 mM (54.30), 80 °C (49.50 nm) and pH 6 (60.16 nm) conditions. The FTIR spectrum and EDX spectral signals affirmed the presence of reducing and stabilising agents in HCR extract, following the reduction of AgNPs from Ag+ to Ag0. AgNPs also exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus, S. enterica and Sh. dysenteriae, indicating a broad spectrum for various applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Electrospinning has emerged as one of the major technologies for designing and fabricating tissue engineering membranes. The resemblance of the electrospun fiber structure to blood capillaries endowed them with unique capabilities to mimic the native tissue biological characteristics, while the high surface‐to‐volume ratio enables them to exert a controlled release of drug directly to the exposed interstitial tissue. This research attempts to compare the characteristics of different electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/hyaluronic acid (PVA/HA) composite material nanofibrous membranes in order to identify the optimal material‐fabrication combination for wound dressing and skin tissue engineering applications. Far‐field electrospinning equipped with both rotatory and wire collectors is considered for membrane fabrication. PVA with different concentrations and molecular weights of HA are electrospun as nanofibrous membranes considering a voltage of 30 kV on both types of collectors. Comprehensive characterization is conducted including morphological, chemical, thermal, mechanical, and in vitro mucoadhesion analysis. In vitro cell viability/proliferation studies are also carried out and pointed out that the designed membranes are cytocompatible, and able to support keratinocytes proliferation. All these results proved that the fabricated PVA/HA nanofibrous membranes are suitable for wound dressing and skin tissue engineering applications, the optimal material‐fabrication combination is also determined. This study investigated high rate of inflation and adult workers' productivity in Southern senatorial district of Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the stated objectives of the study, four research questions and four research hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 225 was drawn from the population of 2.250 workers using simple random sampling technique. An instrument titled: High rate of inflation and adult workers' productivity questionnaire (HRIAWPQ). The hypotheses were analyzed using pearson product moment correlation coefficient and tested at 0.05 level of significance and 223 degrees of freedom. It was discovered that rise of food items, rise of fuel price, rise in transportation and rise in manufacture goods significantly relate to workers' productivity. Insecurity in the work place, high inflation rate are powerful factors influencing workers' productivity and performance in their workplace. It was recommended among others that the government should reduce the cost of purchasing power of people by regulating market prices to cushion the effect of buying power of the Naira. Due to the increasing demand for clean and sustainable energy, wind turbine technology has also witnessed significant developments in terms of its output capacity which is proportional to its size (length of wind turbine blades). The only limitation to this scaling is the availability of applicable materials with expected strength and low weight which can support a longer span wind turbine blade. Although studies have been carried out on alternate materials for the development of wind turbine blades, the use of Grey Relational Analysis for the optimization of natural fiber-reinforced composites for this application is rare. Also, pineapple leaf fiber, having considerable mechanical properties and low density has not been optimally considered as reinforcement in this regard. This is a robust study concerned with developing more eco-friendly materials for application in the manufacture of wind turbine blades. In this study, a material PxGyEz, a natural fiber/synthetic fiber polymer composite was developed and optimized based on the major criteria for selecting materials for wind turbine blades which are high tensile strength, high flexural strength, and low density. Grey relational analysis coupled with the Taguchi robust optimization technique was used for the optimization process and statistical analysis was employed to know the percentage contribution of each of the variable parameters (PALF volume percentage, glass fiber volume percentage, and fiber length) to the grey relational grades. The material P10G20E15 was the optimum having a grey relational grade of 0.7977 at experimentation and tensile strength of 95.3144 MPa, a flexural strength of 92.818 MPa, and a density of 1.3274 g/cm3. SEM analysis showed microstructural formations that explained the mechanical and physical behavior of the optimized hybrid composite. Simulation of an NREL 5 MW wind turbine blade developed with the optimized material P10G20E15 proved reliable for service with a 64% reduction in weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While studies in social media and disability are growing globally, there is paucity in such studies in Nigeria. This study addresses this apparent gap by exploring the experiences and perceptions of Nigerian adults living with physical disability regarding social media, using an interpretive approach. A total of nine adults with physical disability between the ages of 20 and 34, living in urban areas, were interviewed in this study. Findings show that participants experienced diminished social contact and smaller social networks due to their disability. However, participants who used social media experienced increased social contact, developed social relationships, and had larger social networks. Participants also acknowledged social media as a useful platform for disability advocacy and awareness. Results support a call for continued efforts to support adults with physical disability experiencing diminished social contact to use social media to increase their social wellbeing. Implications for future research and practice are discussed. The paper examines the perceptions and experience of social media use among adults with physical disability in Nigeria. Analyses show that adults with physical disability in Nigeria experience some form of diminished social contact and smaller social networks due to their disability. Nigerian adults with physical disability who use social media experience increased social contact, establish and maintain social relationships, and have a larger social networks. Systemic Lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the proliferation of autoantibodies and immune dysregulation resulting in damage to many body organs. Pediatric SLE usually presents with fever, joint pain, rashes, and lupus nephritis. It is uncommon to have large pericardial effusions in children with SLE and cardiac tamponade as the initial presentation of SLE is even rarer. An 11-year-old female presented to our Children Emergency Unit with fever and fast breathing for two weeks, bilateral leg swelling of four days, and cough of two days duration. She was acutely ill, tachypneic, and dyspneic with marked orthopnea, bilateral leg edema, and raised JVP. She was tachycardic with a diffuse apex beat. Chest X-ray showed a large globular heart. 2D-Echocardiography showed a large circumferential pericardial effusion with a dilated non-collapsing IVC and diastolic collapse of the right ventricle. She had a pericardiotomy done and 650mls of serous pericardial fluid was drained. The inner pericardium had a fibrinoid exudate with a "bread-and-butter" appearance. Pericardial fluid cytology showed no malignant cells while pericardial biopsy showed suppurative granulomatous inflammation. Antinuclear antibody (ANA) was strongly positive. The patient was managed with corticosteroids, colchicine, and hydroxychloroquine, and has remained stable on follow-up. While cardiac tamponade as an initial presenting complaint in SLE is rare, it is important that children presenting with large pericardial effusions and tamponade be evaluated for rheumatologic disorders. Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most encountered bacterial infections of humans and affect both male and female of all age groups, resulting in high mortality, without proper management. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, aetiological agents, and factors associated with symptomatic significant bacteriuria/UTI among patients attending selected hospitals in Calabar metropolis, Nigeria. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study of 240 patients with suspected UTI, from whom mid-stream voided urine samples were collected for culture on Cystine Lactose Electrolyte Deficient (CLED) agar. Uropathogens growth on the culture media were characterized using conventional microbiological and biochemical tests, and confirmed with API® 20E and 20NE (BioMérieux) identification system. Data on socio-demographic, clinical symptoms and potential risk factors were obtained using structured questionnaire. Pearson Chi-square was employed to determine association between categorical variables with p<0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Of all the urine samples collected from the 240 patients, 13 samples were contaminated during collection, leaving 227 samples for analysis. Sixty-five (28.6%) of the 227 patients had symptomatic significant bacteriuria. Previous history of UTI (OR=2.863, 95% CI=1.582-5.180, p=0.008), contraceptive use (OR=3.469, 95% CI=1.446-8.320, p=0.012), pregnancy (OR=9.94, 95% CI=3.867-25.571, p<0.0001) and history of urinary catheterization (OR=4.417, 95% CI=1.024-19.053, p=0.045) were significantly associated with prevalence of symptomatic significant bacteriuria/UTI. Klebsiella pneumoniae (23.1%) was the most predominant isolate, followed by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) (16.9%) and Escherichia coli (12.3%). Conclusion: The prevalence of symptomatic significant bacteriuria among patients attending selected hospitals in Calabar, Nigeria, was 28.6% (65/227), with K. pneumoniae and CoNS being the major aetiologic agents. Our study shows that previous history of UTI, pregnancy, history of urinary catheterization, contraceptive use, dysuria and occupation were significantly associated with symptomatic significant bacteriuria/UTI (p<0.05). Objectives. To assess the relative importance of social support and family affluence in depression and self-esteem among adolescents in Calabar, Nigeria. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescent students in Calabar, Nigeria. Using stratified random sampling, 332 students were selected for participation. The Family Affluence Scale (FAS), Oslo Social Support Scale (OSS), Becks Depression Inventory (BDI) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory (RSES) were administered. To facilitate comparisons, the sample was divided into four groups: those with low OSS and low FAS scores, those with low OSS and high FAS scores, those with high OSS and low FAS scores, and those with high scores in both OSS and FAS. Groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis Test. Linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of depression and self-esteem. All analyses were performed using IBM SPSS version 21. Results. Respondents with low levels of social support, irrespective of family affluence, had significantly higher depression scores and significantly lower self-esteem scores (P< 0.05). In linear regression analyses, social support (95%CI [-1.35,-0.58]) and female gender (95%CI [1.49,5.29]) emerged as predictors of depression, while social support (95%CI [0.25,0.64]) and age (95%CI [-0.79,-0.11]) emerged as predictors of self-esteem. Affluence did not predict depression or self-esteem. Conclusions. Social support is of greater relative importance in depression and self-esteem in our study. In developing nations with lean resources, enhanced social support might buffer against the effect of low socio-economic status on mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The low demand for maternal and child health services is a significant factor in Nigeria's high maternal death rate. This paper explores demand and supply-side determinants at the primary healthcare level, highlighting factors affecting provision and utilization. Methods: This qualitative study was undertaken in Anambra state, southeast Nigeria. Anambra state was purposively chosen because a maternal and child health programme had just been implemented in the state. The three-delay model was used to analyze supply and demand factors that affect MCH services and improve access to care for pregnant women/mothers and newborns/infants. Result: The findings show that there were problems with both the demand and supply aspects of the programme and both were interlinked. For service users, their delays were connected to the constraints on the supply side. On the demand side, the delays include poor conditions of the facilities, the roads to the facilities are inaccessible, and equipment were lacking in the facilities. These delayed the utilisation of facilities. On the supply side, the delays include the absence of security (fence, security guard), poor citing of the facilities, inadequate accommodation, no emergency transport for referrals, and lack of trained staff to man equipment. These delayed the provision of services. Conclusion: Our findings show that there were problems with both the demand and supply aspects of the programme, and both were interlinked. Background Sickle cell disease (SCD) describes a group of multisystem, genetic and stigmatising blood conditions that are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Health-related stigma is a negative experience or adverse social judgement about a group based on an enduring feature conferred by a particular health problem. Literature shows that stigmatisation is experienced by people with SCD with negative implications on their lives. This study investigated self-reported views and lived experiences of young adults in Accra, Ghana, regarding SCD-related stigma and its impact on their lives. Methods Data were collected from 19 males and females with SCD using semi-structured individual interviews and focus group discussions. Transcripts were analysed using Braun and Clark's framework for thematic analysis. Results Five themes were identified: exclusion; status loss; SCD misconceptions; internalised stigma; and stigma and health outcomes. Overall, interpersonal and institutional levels of stigma were evident throughout the data with a lack of public education, limited specialist care and religion acting as determinants of SCD-related stigma. Conclusions Stigma has detrimental consequences for young adults with SCD. Multilevel stigmatisation of SCD at interpersonal and institutional levels should be addressed through multipronged approaches including increased public education, investment in specialist healthcare and collaboration with socioreligious institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus made governments across the world announce country-wide lockdowns suspending all activities and banning travels. This affected the lives of millions of people across all the continents in the world, including South America. The low-income classes were most affected by the lockdowns as many lost their only source of income. In addition, the uncertainty of the disease and its deadly nature along with lack of access to correct information led to a deterioration of the mental health of the low-income and indigenous groups in South America. The low-income population has little chance of gaining access to proper mental healthcare as many healthcare systems collapsed due to the nature of the pandemic. A good number of them faced short-term mental effects such as anxiety and panic attacks as well as long-term effects of depression. Proper steps must be taken to maintain and help the most vulnerable sections of the population. The pandemic along with the widespread poverty-stricken regions in the country have affected the population of the country. This article assesses the impact of COVID-19 on the poor and low-income population of the South American continent and the impact it has had on their mental health. Mucorales fungi cause mucormycosis, an invasive and rapidly progressive disease which increasingly affects mostly immunocompromised but also immunocompetent individuals. The objective of this study was to highlight the epidemiology, diagnostic modalities, treatment and overall survival of mucormycosis in Africa. We searched for relevant publications in PubMed, Google Scholar and African Journal Online databases covering the period 1960–2022. A total of 147 articles were identified, of which 66 were included in the review, detailing 408 individual cases from 12 African countries; 330 (80.9%) from North Africa, 63 (15.4%) from Southern Africa, seven (1.7%) from East Africa, seven (1.7%) from West Africa and a single case (0.2%) from Central Africa. The most frequently described clinical forms were rhino‐orbital‐cerebral (n = 307, 75.2%) and gastrointestinal (n = 51, 12.5%). Diabetes mellitus, COVID‐19, malignancies and neutropaenia were the commonest underlying risks in 203 (49.8%), 101 (24.8%), 65 (15.9%) and 53 (13.0%) cases respectively. Most cases, 296 (72.5%) were diagnosed by histopathology. Fungal aetiology was identified in 38 (9.3%), of which the commonest was Rhizopus oryzae/arrhizus (27/38, 71.1%). Of the 408 cases, 334 (81.9%) patients received antifungal therapy, while 244 (59.8%) had surgery. In cases with a specified outcome, survival rate was 59.1% (228/386). Based on case reporting, a substantial burden of mucormycosis occurs in North Africa but the disease is rarely reported in most of the sub‐Saharan region. During the dry season, dust particles on photovoltaic modules (PV modules) are a regular occurrence in Calabar, Cross River State. This dusty condition or environment is caused by the migration of dust particles from the Sahara region via the east-west wind. The concentration of dust on PV modules has an impact on the overall performance of solar energy systems. This research looks into the effect of dust particles on the output power of solar modules. This investigation was carried out by subjecting 80-watt monocrystalline PV modules to an outdoor experiment and analyzing the changes in current and voltage from the control and dusty PV modules with a digital multimeter. Other environmental factors such as relative humidity, ambient temperature, and solar radiation were also measured with a hygrometer, thermometer, and solar power meter respectively. Appropriate formulars were employed to calculate output power and efficiency. Dust particles on the surface of PV modules dramatically reduces the quantity of sunlight that penetrate the panel by 21.10%, resulting in a drop in the system's overall output power. Introduction: Oral health is defined as a state of being free of mouth and facial pain, oral infections and sores, and other diseases that limit an individual's capacity for biting, chewing, smiling, speaking, and psychosocial well-being. This study assessed the knowledge, barriers, and facilitators of oral health knowledge among Pharmacists in Enugu, Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 163 pharmacists in two tertiary hospitals in Enugu, South East, Nigeria. Data on sociodemographic profiles, knowledge of oral health care, barriers, and facilitators of oral health knowledge was collected. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: There were more female 96 (58.9%) than male pharmacists 67 (41.1%). Their mean age was 32.98 ± 8.33 years. The majority of respondents, 56 (34.4%) graduated between 2010 and 2019, and 44 (27%) had additional qualifications. Many of the pharmacists 88 (54%) believed that oral health is part of general health. Also, 107 (65.6%) of the respondents had a good knowledge of oral health while 56 (34.4%) had poor knowledge. There was a significant association between academic qualification (P = 0.04) and having good knowledge of oral health care among pharmacists with those with additional qualifications having better knowledge than the others. Poor creation of oral health awareness by dentists 106 (65.0%) was considered as the main barrier to having good oral health knowledge by the pharmacists. Conclusion: More than half of the pharmacists had good knowledge of oral health and academic qualification was associated with having a good knowledge of oral health care among pharmacists in the study population. This paper presents a novel systemic algorithm based on conservative power pinch analysis principles using a computationally efficient insight-based binary linear programming optimization technique in a model predictive framework for integrated load shifting and shedding in an isolated hybrid energy storage system. In a receding 24-hour predictive horizon, the energy demand and supply are integrated via an adaptive power grand composite curve tool to form a diagonal matrix of predicted hourly minimum and maximum energy constraints. The intgrated energy constraints must be satisfied recursively by the binary optimisation to ensure the energy storage's state of charge only operates within 30% and 90%. Hence, the control command to shift or shed load is contingent on the energy storage state of the charge violating the operating constraints. The controllable load demand is shifted and/or shed to prevent any violations while ensuring energy supply to the most critical load without sacrificing the consumers' comfort. The proposed approach enhances efficient energy use from renewable energy supply as well as limits the use of the Hydrogen resources by a fuel cell to satisfy controllable load demands which can be shifted to periods in the day with excess renewable energy supply. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an infection of the vagina associated with thriving anaerobes, such as Gardnerella vaginitis and other associated pathogens. These pathogens form a biofilm responsible for the recurrence of infection after antibiotic therapy. The aim of this study was to develop a novel mucoadhesive polyvinyl alcohol and polycaprolactone electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds for vaginal delivery, incorporating metronidazole, a tenside, and Lactobacilli. This approach to drug delivery sought to combine an antibiotic for bacterial clearance, a tenside biofilm disruptor, and a lactic acid producer to restore healthy vaginal flora and prevent the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis. F7 and F8 had the least ductility at 29.25% and 28.39%, respectively, and this could be attributed to the clustering of particles that prevented the mobility of the crazes. F2 had the highest at 93.83% due to the addition of a surfactant that increased the affinity of the components. The scaffolds exhibited mucoadhesion between 31.54 ± 0.83% and 57.86 ± 0.95%, where an increased sodium cocoamphoacetate concentration led to increased mucoadhesion. F6 showed the highest mucoadhesion at 57.86 ± 0.95%, as compared to 42.67 ± 1.22% and 50.89 ± 1.01% for the F8 and F7 scaffolds, respectively. The release of metronidazole via a non-Fickian diffusion-release mechanism indicated both swelling and diffusion. The anomalous transport within the drug-release profile pointed to a drug-discharge mechanism that combined both diffusion and erosion. The viability studies showed a growth of Lactobacilli fermentum in both the polymer blend and the nanofiber formulation that was retained post-storage at 25 °C for 30 days. The developed electrospun scaffolds for the intravaginal delivery of Lactobacilli spp., along with a tenside and metronidazole for the management of bacterial vaginosis, provide a novel tool for the treatment and management of recurrent vaginal infection. This study investigated the reasons for variations in baking yield and quality of bread from four major brands of wheat flour using established methods. Flour samples were obtained on the same day from four companies that produce different brands of wheat flour labeled as A, B, C, and D. Flour samples showed significant variations in composition, with protein (10.82–12.75%) and carbohydrates (75.24–77.40%) being the major nutrients. Flours showed differences in their particle size distribution and ability to absorb water (2.10–2.90 mL/g). Dry gluten contents were similar (approx. 10%) but the wet gluten (30.10–33.70%), gluten index (92.75–96.45%), and specific volume (4.04–5.02 cm3/g) varied significantly. The rheological properties of the flours were significantly different (p ≤ 0.05) and affected their baking quality but the sensory properties of the bread samples were very similar. Gastrointestinal histoplasmosis (GIH) is infrequently described in people without underlying HIV infection. We aimed to compare the clinical presentation of GIH in people with and without HIV infection. We conducted a literature search of published cases of GIH from 2001–2021 and found 212 cases. Of these, 142 (67.0%) were male, and 124 (58.5%) had HIV infection. Most cases were from North America (n = 88, 41.5%) and South America (n = 79, 37.3%). Of the 212 cases, 123 (58.0%) were included in both clinical and pathological analyses. The remainder were excluded as details about clinical and pathological findings were not available. Of the 123 cases, 41 had HIV infection while 82 were without HIV infection. The diagnosis was predominantly by histopathology (n = 109, 88.6%). A significant proportion of people with HIV infection had abdominal pain as the most predominant symptom of GIH compared to those without HIV infection (65.9% versus 41.9%, p < 0.05). The colon was the most affected site with a slightly higher proportion in those with HIV infection compared with cases without HIV infection (46.3% versus 42.7%). The commonest pathologic findings were caecal and ileal ulcers. Caecal ulcers were significantly more frequent in cases with HIV infection compared to those without HIV (32.1% versus 7.1%, p < 0.05). Introduction Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that mostly result in immunological reactions that affect the skin, peripheral nervous system and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract. This study aimed to evaluate hematological parameters among subjects with leprosy and deduce biomarkers for onset of leprosy reaction. Methods This was a cross-sectional study performed from September 1, 2018 to August 1, 2019. Sixty patients with leprosy (30 on multidrug therapy (MDT) and 30 that had completed MDT) and 30 apparently healthy controls were enrolled. Hematology auto-analyzer (Sysmex KX-21N by Sysmex Corporation Kobe, Japan) was used in sample analysis. ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis were used for mean comparison. Eta squared was used to assess effect size. Sensitivity and specificity were assessed using receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve. Association was checked using bivariate logistics regression. Results The majority (68.3%) of the patients with leprosy were males and a larger proportion were either farmers or unemployed. The prevalence of leprosy reaction in the studied population was 40%. The following parameters were significantly (p<0.05) reduced: red cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit in patients with leprosy compared to controls. Total white cell count, absolute lymphocyte, neutrophil, monocyte and eosinophil counts were significantly elevated in patients with leprosy compared to controls. The hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume of patients with leprosy on treatment were significantly higher compared to those who had completed treatment, while the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was significantly reduced. Overall, 65% of patients with leprosy were anemic. Eosinophil count showed good biomarker potential for leprosy reaction onset with AUC 0.709. Sex and absolute eosinophil count were associated with leprosy reaction (OR=11.194; 95%CI: 1.775-70.586). Conclusions This study has shown a high frequency of anemia in patients with leprosy, both those on treatment and those that had completed MDT, necessitating incorporation of post treatment plan in the management of leprosy. Effects of freeze-thaw pretreatments using slow (SFZ), fast (FFZ) and ultrafast (UFZ) freezing on the drying characteristics, physicochemical and phytochemical compositions of red dragon fruit slices were investigated during mid- (MIR) and near-infrared (NIR) drying. Results indicated that the pretreatments altered cellular structure, reduced drying time and increased drying rates and effective moisture diffusivity, and these effects were dependent on the freezing methods, showing that FFZ and UFZ could improve physicochemical quality, ascorbic acid, and hydroxyl scavenging ability, while SFZ could enhance total phenolics and flavonoid contents, betalains, and ABTS radical scavenging activity. Overall, freeze-thaw pretreatments prompted more efficient drying due to structural modification and improved heating uniformity, they also presented undesirable effects on color, shrinkage, betalains, phenolics and ABTS scavenging activity. The study provided a theoretical basis for applying freeze-thaw pretreatments during infrared drying and indicated the need for optimization studies for improving drying efficiency. Cancer is a human cellular error with a high mortality rate, especially in developing regions. Resolving this error with therapy may render patients immunologically depressed and susceptible to opportunistic infections including parasitic. The gut parasites, Cluster of Differentiation four (CD4) cells and haemoglobin (Hb) levels of cancer patients on oncology therapy in Calabar, Nigeria were studied. Stool and blood samples were collected from 317 (186 cancer and 131 apparently healthy) subjects. Parasites were identified using direct smear and formol ether concentration techniques while CD4 and Hb estimation were done using BD-fascount and fluorescent flow cytometric techniques, respectively. Data were analysed using chi-square and independent sample t-test. Overall parasitosis prevalence in this study was (27.44%) with cancer showing an association with intestinal parasitosis (P=0.001) and CD4 level (P=0.002), respectively but none with Hb level. Parasiteinfected cancer subjects had significantly lower mean haemoglobin concentration than their non-infected counterpart (t = - 4.869, P<0.001). Generally, cancer subjects on cancer treatment had an insignificantly lower parasite and significantly lower CD4 levels compared to their non-treated counterpart (P = 0.829) and (P<0.001), respectively but their mean haemoglobin levels were similar (P=0.701). Cancer subjects on chemotherapy alone had significantly higher parasite prevalence, 50.00% compared to 28.95% for those on combined (surgery and chemotherapy) treatment (P=0.014), whereas the type of treatment showed no significant effect on CD4 and Hb levels. Parasite occurrence was only pronounced (71.43%) among subjects with >12 months of treatment duration (P=0.1038). There was a correlation between duration of treatment and CD4 levels (r = - 0.231, P<0.05) but none with haemoglobin levels (r = 0.024, P>0.05) of cancer subjects. In conclusion, although this study has shown that cancer as a condition increases parasite prevalence and reduces mean CD4 counts in subjects, their haemoglobin levels were not significantly affected, except for subjects with intestinal parasite infections. Treatment with cancer therapy did not also affect the haemoglobin concentration, but significantly reduced the CD4 cell number of subjects. Subjects who had majorly, chemotherapy were mostly infected with the parasite but with no noticeable effect on their CD4 and haemoglobin levels. A prolonged duration of treatment increased parasitosis and reduced the CD4 level of subjects but did not affect haemoglobin levels. Apart from the oncological treatments given to cancer subjects, management of cancer subjects should include parasitological examination and treatment, periodic monitoring of their hematologic profile and regular immune revitalization procedures, especially for those placed on prolonged therapy. South-eastern Nigeria's tropical water ecosystems typically consist of mangrove swamps and riparian forests, both of which have become endangered in the last six decades. The purpose of this research was to determine the extent of human-induced impact and activities on the effect of water quality on the distribution and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and fish fauna in the Tropical River (Ikang). The river's surface water, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish fauna were sampled and identified to create a database of reference information. Twelve (12) species of benthic macroinvertebrates from two (2) phyla were identified. Station 1 had the highest benthic macroinvertebrate abundance of 58 (35.65%), while Station 3 had the lowest abundance of 52 (31.70%). Uca tangeri was the most abundant benthic macroinvertebrate with a percentage abundance of 28 (17.07%), while Dinocras sp., Macromia sp., and Gomphus sp. were the least abundant benthic macroinvertebrates with a percentage abundance of 3.66%. In addition, seven (7) fish species from six (6) families were identified. During the study, the family Claroteidae was the most abundant, while the family Carangidae was the least abundant. The temperature of the river had a positive correlation with the families Carangidae and Mugilidae, a negative correlation with the family Clupeidae, and no correlation with the family Claroteidae. Total dissolved solids (TDS) correlated positively with the families Carangidae, Mugilidae, and Clariidae, while conductivity correlated positively only with the family Sciaenidae and negatively with the families Carangidae, Mugilidae and Clariidae. The abundance and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and fish fauna were generally influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, the availability of food, and the extent of human impacts and activities. Brain metastases (BM) are the most common brain neoplasm in adults. Current BM therapies still offer limited efficacy and reduced survival outcomes, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of the disease. Herein, we analyzed the transcriptional profile of brain metastasis initiating cells (BMICs) at two distinct stages of the brain metastatic cascade--the "premetastatic" or early stage when they first colonize the brain and the established macrometastatic stage. RNA sequencing was used to obtain the transcriptional profiles of premetastatic and macrometastatic (non-premetastatic) lung, breast, and melanoma BMICs. We identified that lung, breast, and melanoma premetastatic BMICs share a common transcriptomic signature that is distinct from their non-premetastatic counterparts. Importantly, we show that premetastatic BMICs exhibit increased expression of HLA-G, which we further demonstrate functions in an HLA-G/SPAG9/STAT3 axis to promote the establishment of brain metastatic lesions. Our findings suggest that unraveling the molecular landscape of premetastatic BMICs allows for the identification of clinically relevant targets that can possibly inform the development of preventive and/or more efficacious BM therapies. Background: Yellow Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease endemic in tropical Africa and Latin America and is transmitted through infected mosquitoes. The earliest outbreak of yellow fever in Nigeria was reported in Lagos in 1864 with subsequent regular outbreaks reported until 1996. A large epidemic of yellow fever occurred in Oyo State in April and May 1987 following an epidemic of sylvatic yellow fever in Eastern Nigeria the previous year. For 21 years, no further confirmed cases were reported until September 2017 following which Nigeria has been responding to successive outbreaks. The renewed onset of yellow fever outbreaks in Nigeria followed a global trend of reports and from other African countries. Yellow Fever disease has no cure, but control is through vaccination and vector control. Eliminating Yellow fever Epidemic (EYE) strategy to improve high-risk countries' prevention, preparedness, detection, management, and response to yellow fever outbreaks was developed by the WHO in 2017 and launched in Nigeria in April 2018. Yet, poor vaccination coverage continues to be a cause for concern.Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study that examines the resurgence of Yellow fever cases and outbreaks from 2013 to 2020 in Oyo State, Nigeria. The Yellow Fever data for both surveillance and routine Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) were the focus of the review. Surveillance data were retrieved from the State's database reported by all 33 LGAs, maintained by the State and supported by the World Health Organization at the Zonal and State levels. The routine EPI data were retrieved from District Health Information Software (DHIS_2). The proportion of LGAs reporting at least one case of suspected yellow fever with a blood specimen and the number of suspected cases reported for each year within the period under review was measured. We also assessed the trend of confirmed cases and the incidence per 100,000 persons. Also, suspected cases of yellow fever were categorized into four age groups and their vaccination status was assessed. The State's annual administrative routine vaccination coverage for yellow fever vaccine was compared with the number of confirmed cases for each year.Results: The proportion of LGAs reporting at least a case of suspected yellow fever, with blood samples collected, ranged from 6.1 to 84.9% between 2014 and 2020 while a total of 9 confirmed (8 cases) and probable (1 case) cases of yellow fever were recorded. However, there were no confirmed cases from the year 2013 to 2016, including 2018 but an upward trend of incidence of the disease per 100,000 persons from 0% to 2013 through 2018, to 3.5% in 2019, and then to 5.6% in 2020 was observed. 93 of 240 (39%) suspected yellow fever cases reported during the given period were observed to have received yellow fever vaccine.Conclusions: In conclusion, the increase in the circulation of the yellow fever virus in the state reiterates the state is at a high risk of yellow fever transmission and underlines the need for viable interventions such as environmental hygiene to rid the environment of the disease vector's ecological niche and improving routine EPI coverage to provide population immunity. Background: COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has evolved into a pandemic. Oyo state, Nigeria with a population of 9,233,010, recorded the first case of COVID-19 on the 12th of March 2020 and it is among the highest contributing States to the nation's burden of the disease with 3267 confirmed cases, including 40 deaths as of date, with an overall test positivity rate of 18.1%, far higher compared to the National average within a limited period from recorded index case. A 'Hotspot strategy' was designed by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Oyo State was selected to implement the strategy through upscaling case detection, isolation and treatment, quarantine of contacts and strengthening public health and social measures.Methods: We used a descriptive cross-sectional survey of 3 identified hotspot Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Oyo State using mobile phones under Surveillance, Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) platform to collect data from October to December 2020. Interventions comprised of enhanced active case search, contact line listing, contact investigation, and contact follow-up as well as to facilitate data collection and entry, community sensitization and management of alert/rumors. Baseline information and that after the 3-month period was then analyzed with the descriptive statistics presented.Results: The implementation of the hotspot strategy was shown to have had a major impact in Irepo LGA, where more than a 100% increase in samples tested, confirmed cases, contacts listed and contacts followed were recorded, while there were no significance changes noticed in Ibadan North and Lagelu LGAs. However, test positivity rates among contacts were found to be quite high in Ibadan North LGA (48%), compared to the other two, even though Lagelu LGA (5.7%) tested more contacts than Ibadan North.Conclusion: The observed increase in number of samples tested, cases confirmed, contact listed and investigated as well as test positivity rate in the 3 LGAs after the intervention implies that the hotspot strategy can be said to have contributed positively to the sensitivity of COVID-19 surveillance in Oyo State, Nigeria. This implies that strengthening this 'hotspot strategy' may be a key area of focus to improve COVID-19 surveillance sensitivity and response and in turn may help in breaking the transmission and bringing the pandemic to a halt. Computational chemistry approach based on density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to investigate the interaction, adsorption behaviour, electronic and structural properties of nanostructured complexes formed by 4-(4-(bis(2-chloroethyl)amino)phenyl)butanoic acid (CPB) and all carbon fullerene nanocage, (C24NC), boron functionalized carbon nanocage (C24NC@B@CPB), carboxylate functionalized (C24NC@COOH@CPB), amino functionalized (C24NC@NH2@CPB), and hydroxy functionalized (C24NC@OH@CPB) nanostructured materials. To understand effectively the interaction of the drug and surface, topological analysis was conducted via the atoms in molecule (quantum theory of atoms in molecules) and noncovalent interaction approach. Electronic properties such as quantum chemical descriptors, natural bond orbital and nonlinear optics are equally considered and reported. All computations were achieved at the B3LYP-D3 and ωB97XD levels of theory with the 6-311++G(d, p) basis set. The results indicate that the adsorption energy of CPB on C24NC and its functionalized derivatives are in the range of −0.52 to 2.89 eV indicating that physisorption and chemisorption mechanism are prevalent mechanisms of adsorption. C23B@CPB, C24OH@CPB, and C24NH2@CPB were observed to possess the best characteristics to be considered as transport vehicles for CPB due to their strong adsorption nature (chemisorption) and solubility in solution. Introduction: the nasal morphometry is an integral part of cephalometry which has been described as second most reliable indicator of sexual differences after pelvimetry. Other applications include reconstructive surgery and ergonomics. This study was aimed to assess the nasal morphometry of the Bini and Ibibio tribes in Southern Nigeria and its significance. Methods: this study involved 300 adult Bini and 300 adult Ibibio tribes of Southern Nigeria. The nasal length and width of subjects were evaluated using appropriate anatomical landmarks. The nasal index was calculated as the percentage ratio of nasal width to the nasal length and the nasal morphological distribution was assessed among the study population. Results: the mean nasal length of male Binis (47.10 ± 4.63) and Ibibios (44.35 ± 7.84) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than female Binis (42.45 ± 5.75) and Ibibios (39.77 ± 5.93) respectively. Similarly, the mean nasal width of the male Binis (42.14 ± 6.35) and Ibibios (39.53 ± 6.56) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the female Binis (37.53 ± 5.68) and Ibibios (34.62 ± 5.45) respectively. The nasal indices of the male Binis (90.55 ± 5.66) and Ibibios (88.95 ± 4.22) and female Binis (87.95 ± 4.13) and Ibibios (86.17 ± 4.57) respectively showed the dominance of platyrrhine nasal morphology among the study population. Conclusion: aside the applications of nasal morphometry in the forensic identification and reconstructive surgeries among the study population, it would serve as a source of crucial anthropometric parameters in ergonomic design and production of face or medical masks and respirators. A review on the role of biochar in agricultural productivity revealed the importance of biochar as a soil amendment system for sustainable agriculture. There is a growing interest in its use, as a fertilizing material or as incorporation into farming systems for amending soils. It is a fact that biochar is fast assuming the status of a quick fix solution to all soil degradation problems associated with the sustainable management of plant nutrients for strategic increases in crop yields. These call for a careful examination of the benefits and definite drawbacks of biochar. To avoid the abuse of biochar, there is need to quantitatively and qualitatively study its application and deployment for soil amelioration and nutrient boost for crop production. This involves field studies and extensive review of available literatures, to clear any doubt that may exist in the use of biochar. A well-established knowledge based on its beneficial potentials will inform both scientists and farm practitioners how best to engage biochar. Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital cardiac anomaly with a prevalence of 1.17 per 1000 live births. Haemodynamically significant VSDs require closure either surgical or transcatheter. We report a case of transcatheter device closure of a moderate-sized perimembranous ventricular septal defect (PmVSD), the first of its kind in Nigeria. The procedure was performed on a 23-month-old female weighing 10 kg who had presented with a history of frequent pneumonia and poor weight gain and signs of heart failure. The procedure was uncomplicated, and she was discharged 24 hours after the intervention. She had been followed-up two years post-procedure without complications and she had achieved appreciable weight gain. This non-surgical option was effective in this patient and provided the advantage of limited hospitalization, accelerated recovery, and intervention without the need for blood products. This study employs the grey models to explore Nigeria's road transport energy consumption, vehicle population and vehicular emissions. The vehicular emissions were evaluated using the European Environment Agency Tier 1 Approach, based on the fuel consumption. A baseline scenario, based on historical data and three other alternative scenarios were developed. The study considered fuel quality, vehicle technology and survival rates as the key drivers of scenario formulation. Results show that vehicle population increases by about 3.58 % annually from 12.9 million units in 2018 to 38.5 million in 2050. Field trial was conducted during the 2019/2020 cropping seasons to determine the effect of cultivar and weed control strategies on the productivity of roselle in a semi-arid environment. The trials comprised of two cultivars (deep red and white) and seven weed control strategies (pendimethalin at 2.0, butachlor 2.0, butachlor 1.5 + pendimethalin 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1, butachlor 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1 + SHW at 6 WAS, pendimethalin 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1 + SHW at 6 WAS, hoe weeded twice at 3 and 6 WAS, and weedy check) which were factorially combined and replicated thrice in a Randomized complete block design. The application of pendimethalin at 2.0 kg a.i. ha-1, as well as the deep red roselle cultivar, resulted in significant (P<0.01) increase in the number of days to 50% emergence, crop injury scores, and lowest stand count. The weedy check, on the other hand, recorded the lowest crop vigor score, plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaf area, and leaf area index. Similarly, weedy check had the lowest fresh fruit weight, fresh capsule weight, dried capsule weight, seed weight, seed yield, and 1000 seed weight when compared to the other weed control strategies. Weed cover and weed density were similar in weedy check compared to the other weed control strategies, but treatment efficiency index was significantly (P<0.01) higher with application of two hoe weeding's at 3 WAS and 6 WAS, butachlor 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1 + SHW at 6 WAS and pendimethalin 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1 + SHW at 6 WAS. Deep roselle cultivar outperformed white roselle in terms of growth and yield characters. Therefore, the cultivation of deep red roselle with butachlor and pendimethalin at 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1 + SHW at 6 WAS can be adopted in place of hoe weeding for season long weed control in the study area. To assess the agronomic effects of sustainable okra production as impacted by goat manure (GM) and rice husk ash (RHA) on a community-based demonstration farm in Gombe State, field trials were carried out during the wet seasons of 2017 and 2018. The trails consisted of four levels of GM and RHA, each measuring 0.0, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 t ha-1 which were used on Kwadon's local cultivar of okra in a Randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated four times. Findings revealed that days to 50% emergence and establishment count were not significantly (P>0.05) influenced by the application of GM and RHA, regardless of rates of application. Other growth-related indices were significantly (P<0.05) higher due to GM, such as plant height at 4, 5, and 6 WAS, number of leaves plant-1 at 4 WAS, and pod diameter. On the other hand, RHA significantly (P<0.05) increased plant height, the number of leaves plant-1 at 5 and 6 WAS, leaf area, shortened days to 50% flowering, and the number of pods plant-1 across the sampling periods and seasons. Similar to this, due to adequate mineralization of organic material through time and space, fresh okra's marketable weight increased in the 2018 season compared to the previous year. Thus, the application of 10.0 t ha-1 of both GM and RHA can be adopted in the production of okra in the study area to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of inorganic agrochemical inputs. Overall, 65% of patients with leprosy were anemic. Eosinophil count showed good biomarker potential for leprosy reaction onset with AUC 0.709. Sex and absolute eosinophil count were associated with leprosy reaction (OR=11.194; 95%CI: 1.775-70.586). Conclusions This study has shown a high frequency of anemia in patients with leprosy, both those on treatment and those that had completed MDT, necessitating incorporation of post treatment plan in the management of leprosy. Objective(s): Cobalt toxicity has become a health concern in recent years, due to overexposure resulting in neurological impairments. With a growing interest in the therapeutic roles of herbs, in toxicity research, it's worth looking into the curative effects of aqueous Prosopis africana seed extract, a plant rich in flavonoids on cobalt-induced neurotoxicity. Materials and Methods: We treated rats with CoCl2 or CoCl2 in combination with aqueous PA seed extract (PAE) orally for 14 days. Control rats received distilled water for the same period. Following treatments, behavioral experiments, analysis for oxidative stress, inflammation, and histological and immunohistochemical analysis were performed. Results: Results revealed that CoCl2 reduced the exploration time, recognition index in the novel object recognition test, percentage spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze tests, and reduced open arm entry and duration in elevated plus-maze. However, treatment with PAE improved these parameters to levels comparable with those of the control group. Furthermore, PAE therapy reduced CoCl2-induced surge in hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, TNF-a and IL-1ß levels in brain homogenate, while also increasing superoxide dismutase and reduced reduced-glutathione activities. CoCl2 exposure resulted in obvious features of neurodegeneration like nuclear disintegration, nuclear shrinkage, and cytoplasmic vacuolations of the cells of the hippocampus and amygdala, with an increased expression of GFAP. The hippocampal and amygdala histology improved after PAE administration, while exacerbated GFAP expressions were attenuated. Conclusion: These findings imply that PAE may be anxiolytic and can help reduce cognitive impairments and hippocampal damage caused by CoCl2 neurotoxicity, via mechanisms that involve attenuation of oxidative stress and inflammation. Optimization of the production and chemical evaluation of cassava-based cookies supplemented with mungbean flour and coconut pomace flour using optimal design model of response surface methodology was investigated. The variables were cassava flour, mungbean flour, and coconut pomace flour while responses were sensory and physical properties. The results of the ANOVA, R-square and adjusted R-square for sensory and physical properties were significant (p <.05). Three cookie samples (run 6, run14 and run 16) were selected from optimization results and compared with control (100% wheat flour cookies). Mungbean flour supplementation significantly (p <.05) increased crude protein and caloric value of cookies (run 14). A higher percentage of coconut pomace flour-enhanced ash, crude fiber, carbohydrate and total dietary fiber contents of cookies (run 16). Although supported by different ideologies of language, code-switching and translanguaging are, surprisingly perhaps, united in some of the claims made in their names. In the literature on classroom practices, one shared claim is that content is simplified for students when the teacher uses features enregistered as the non-official classroom language/s in a way that overlaps with and/or complements features enregistered as the official classroom language. Functional allocation of languages/features, a corollary of this claim, arguably interpellates what may be termed diglossic cognition. The problem with this diglossic cognition is that it is largely knowledge-blind and equates cognition with the mere use of particular languages or features. This study finds that there are both language and knowledge variables in teacher multilingual-talk that explain students’ enhanced cognition, and, therefore, invites a rethink of the unnuanced connections made between language (feature) choice and cognition. This article presents extensive analysis and review on recent developments in smart fluids as well as future opportunities of smart drilling fluids utilization in oil and gas well drilling while focusing on the following smart fluids: smart nanoparticles, electrorheological, magnetorheological, and viscoelastic surfactant (VES) fluids. The distinctive properties of nanoparticles such as tiny particle sizes, high specific surface area, mechanical strength, and thermal stability make them suitable for utilization in drilling fluids. In bentonite water-based drilling fluid systems, this review suggests that charged nanoparticles are capable of displacing exchangeable ions in between bentonite clay platelets, thereby forming intercalates which can interact with clay surfaces through electrostatic attraction or repulsion. In improving wellbore stability, it is presented in this review that nanoparticles are able to invade and plug ultratiny pore spaces in shale formations, thereby further enhancing shale formations' mechanical strength and wellbore stability. According to this review, the magnitude of changes in properties of smart electrorheological and magnetorheological fluids largely depends on the intensity of applied electric and magnetic fields. The intensity of smart fluids properties alteration due to applied field would equally depend on wt.% concentration and chemical compositions of particles susceptible to electric and magnetic fields. Based on review carried out on VES smart fluids, attractive and repulsive forces in the smart VES fluids solution result in the formation of micelles which can cause changes in viscoelastic property of the formulated smart viscoelastic fluids. The more the concentration of charged ions in the base fluid which VES fluids come in contact with, the higher the viscoelasticity of the smart VES fluids. According to this review, utilization of smart materials in drilling fluids can result in meeting oil and gas well drilling technical challenges including enhancing wellbore stability, improving hole cleaning performance, lost circulation control, fluid loss control, enhancing rate of penetration, pressure drop control, and easing cutting carrying efficiency of drilling fluids. This review equally suggests that the utilization of smart fluids such as smart magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids would facilitate drilling automation and real-time data acquisition processes, which is the future technology in oil and gas drilling. Background: Harungana madagascariensis Lam. ex Poir. (Hypericaceae) leaf extract is used by some communities in the Niger Delta to treat diarrhoea, ulcers, and wounds. Objectives: This study investigated the antispasmodic, antimotility and gastroprotective properties of methanol:dichloromethane (1:1) extract of H. madagascariensis leaves (HME). Materials and Methods: The antispasmodic activity was evaluated in vitro using actions on contractions of guinea pig ileum and rabbit jejunum provoked by spasmogens. The actions of HME on gastrointestinal transit was assessed in vivo using normal defaecation and charcoal meal transit time tests in rodents. The actions of HME on gastric ulcers produced by ethanol and indomethacin were investigated. The HME was also subjected to phytochemical analysis and acute toxicity tests. Results: The HME suppressed contractions of isolated rabbit jejunum and guinea pig ileum elicited by histamine and acetylcholine. The extract elicited significant (P<0.05) reduction of normal defaecation (12.50 - 100%) and gastrointestinal propulsion of charcoal meal in mice (17.60 - 43.08%). Additionally, the extract significantly (P<0.05) prevented both ethanol-and indomethacin-induced stomach ulcers. An oral LD50 >5000 mg/kg in mice was obtained by an acute toxicity assay on HME. Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) is a wireless WAN technology that connects low-powered and low-bandwidth devices with low bit rates atop Long Ranges (LoRa). It is characterized by improved scalability, wide area coverage, and low power consumption, which are beneficial to resource-constrained devices on the Internet of Things (IoT) for effective communication and security. Security in Long-Range Wide-Area Networks (LoRaWAN) widely employs Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit symmetric encryption as the accepted security standard for a key generation that secures communication and entities. However, designing an efficient key manifestation and management model is still a challenge as different designs are based on different research objectives. To date, there is no global and well-accepted LoRaWAN security model for all applications. Thus, there is a need to continually improve the LoRaWAN security model. This paper, therefore, performed an in-depth analysis of some existing LoRaWAN key security models to identify security challenges affecting these security models and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed solutions. The goal is to improve some of the existing LoRaWAN security models by analysing and bringing together several challenges that affect them. Several relevant studies were collected and analysed; the analysis shows that though there are few research works in this area, several existing LoRaWAN security models are not immune to attacks. Symmetry encryption is found to be the most used approach to manage key security due to its less computational operations. Moreover, it is possible to improve existing key security models in LPWAN with consideration of the resource constrained. Again, trusted third parties for key management were also widely used to defend against possible attacks and minimize operational complexities. The need to restore and keep the grid running or fast restoration during emergencies such as extreme weather conditions is quite apparent given the reliance of other infrastructure on electricity. One promising approach to electricity restoration is the use of locally available energy resources to restore the system to form isolated microgrids. In this paper, we present a black start restoration method that forms islanded microgrids after a blackout. The master DGs in the formed microgrids are coordinated to work together through droop control. Several constraints, including incentive-based demand response (DR) with direct load control (DLC) and distributed generator (DG) operation constraints, were formulated and linearized to realize a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) restoration model. To improve compactness and to ensure that the model is neither under-sized nor over-sized, a pre-processing graph analysis approach was introduced which helps to characterize the least number of restoration steps needed to optimally restore the microgrid. Studies were performed on a modified IEEE 123 node test feeder to evaluate the effects of demand response, non-dispatchable DGs, and choice of restoration steps on the quality of the restoration solution. Moringa oleifera Lam (syn. M. ptreygosperma Gaertn.) leaves are globally acclaimed for their nutritional content and mitigation of malnutrition. In most impoverished rural communities including Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal of South Africa, powdered leaves of Moringa oleifera are applied as a nutritional supplement for readily available food such as porridge for malnourished children and even breast-feeding mothers. Widely practiced and admired is also the use of the plant seed in the do-it-yourself purification of water by rural South Africans. This study aimed at identifying the chemical and nutritional marker compounds present in South African Moringa oleifera seed oils using high resolution 1-2-dimension gas chromatography in order to give scientific validation to its uses in cosmetics and particularly in culinary practices. Results obtained from two-dimension tandem mass spectrometry chemical signature revealed over 250 compounds, five times more than those reported from one-dimension gas chromatography. Whereas previous reports from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis reported oleic acid (70–78%) as the major compound from oil samples from other countries, M. oleifera seed oil from South Africa is marked by cis-13-octadeaconic acid with 78.62% and 41.9% as the predominant monounsaturated fatty acid in the hexane and dichloromethane extracts respectively. This was followed by cis-vaccenic acid, an isomer of oleic acid at 51% in the acetone extract, 9-octadecanoic acid-(z)-methyl ester at 39.18%, 21.34% and 10.06% in dichloromethane, hexane and acetone extracts respectively. However, a principal component analysis with R2 = 0.98 of the two-dimension tandem mass spectrometry cum chemometric analysis indicated n-hexadecanoic acid, oleic acid, 9-octadecanoic acid-(z)-methyl ester and cis-vaccenic acid with a probability of 0.96, 0.88, 0.80 and 0.79 respectively as the marker compounds that should be used for the quality control of moringa seed oils from South Africa. This study demonstrates that South African Moringa oleifera oils contain C-18 monounsaturated fatty acids similar to oils from Egypt (76.2%), Thailand (71.6%) and Pakistan (78.5%) just to mention but a few. These fatty acids are sunflower and olive oil type-compounds and therefore place moringa seed oil for consideration as a cooking oil amongst its other uses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Development of nanomaterials for drug delivery has received considerable attention due to their potential for achieving on-target delivery to the diseased area while the surrounding healthy tissue is spared. Safe and efficiently delivered payloads have always been a challenge in pharmaceutics. Niosomes are self-assembled vesicular nanocarriers formed by hydration of a non-ionic surfactant, cholesterol or other molecules that combine to form a versatile drug delivery system with a variety of applications ranging from topical delivery to targeted delivery. Niosomes have advantages similar to those of liposomes with regards to their ability to incorporate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic payloads. Moreover, niosomes have simple manufacturing methods, low production cost and exhibit extended stability, consequently overcoming the major drawbacks associated with liposomes. This review provides a comprehensive summary of niosomal research to date, including the types of niosomes and critical material attributes (CMA) and critical process parameters (CPP) of niosomes and their effects on the critical quality attributes (CQA) of the technology. Furthermore, physical characterisation techniques of niosomes are provided. The review then highlights recent applications of specialised niosomes in drug delivery. Entamoeba histolytica is one of the common pathogenic protozoa encountered in Calabar, Nigeria. Differentiating it from the non-pathogenic species, Entamoeba dispar is not a routine practice in our medical laboratories leading to misdiagnosis, overdiagnosis and drug abuse. Studies suggested that stool antigen assays are more sensitive and specific than microscopy for the diagnosis of Entamoeba histolytica infection. This study was carried out to detect and differentiate E. histolytica from E. dispar, hence determining the actual prevalence of E. histolytica among primary school children in Calabar, Nigeria between February and July 2019. A total of 384 stool samples collected from public and private primary school children, aged 5-15years were examined. Direct stool microscopy and ELISA kit-abnova KA3201 were used for Entamoeba histolytica/dispar complex detection while differentiation between E. histolytica and E. dispar was performed using E. histolytica 11IgG ELISA Kit-abnova KA5130. Prevalence of E. histolytica/E. dispar by microscopy and ELISA were 15(3.91%) and 21(5.47%), respectively. The prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica and that of E. dispar after differentiation were 7(1.82%) and 14(3.65%), respectively. Children in public schools were more significantly infected with E. histolytica 6(3.13%) than their private school counterpart 1(0.52%), (P = 0.0211). Although there was no association between Entamoeba infection and gender, males had an insignificantly higher prevalence of E. histolytica and E. dispar 5(3.0%) and 10(6.2%), respectively than females 2(0.9%) and 4(1.8%), respectively (P = 0.1210). There was no association between Entamoeba infection and age but children between the age of 8-10years were more infected with E. histolytica 5(3.70%) and E. dispar 9(6.67%) than others (P =0.2358). Calabar South recorded an insignificantly higher prevalence for E. histolytica 4(2.08%) and E. dispar 8(4.17%) than Calabar municipal 3(1.56%) and 6(3.13%), respectively (P = 0.7029). Introduction. Before the introduction of vaccination to protect children from pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB) were the most frequent aetiological agents causing bacterial pneumonia in children under five years old. However, the etiology of childhood pneumonia appears to be changing and nonvaccine- type S. pneumoniae, non-typeable H. influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus are becoming more relevant. Objective. We conducted a systematic review aimed at identifying the common causes of bacterial pneumonia in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods. We searched PubMed, Web of Science and African Index Medicus and included primary studies conducted since January 2010 that reported on the bacterial causes of pneumonia in children under five from sub-Saharan Africa. We extracted data items (about the study setting, pneumonia diagnosis, sampling, microbiological methods, and etiological agents) as well as study quality indicators. Results. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common bacteria in blood cultures from children with pneumonia (8%, 95% CI: 4-14%), and H. influenzae was second (3%, 95% CI: 1-17%). Children's nasopharynx commonly contained S. pneumoniae (66%), Moraxella catarrhalis (62%), and H. influenzae (44%). Conclusion. S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae cause bacterial pneumonia in sub-Saharan African children. Our review also highlights the prevalence of potentially pathogenic bacteria in the nasopharynx of children under five and calls for more research into how nasopharyngeal colonization causes pneumonia. June 24th, 2022, a day that will be etched in today and future generations' textbooks as a historic day, the United States of America revoked the constitutional right to seek safe abortion care. Overturning Roe v Wade allowed the divided individual states to independently decide the legal parameters regarding abortion care. A decision that disproportionately effects the reproductive lives of women residing on the land of America. Given the systemic impacts of racism, neoliberalism and white supremacy, it is the Black, racialized and poor women who suffer terrible repercussions. In this commentary the authors begin by discussing the historical biopolitical perspective, colonial systems and longstanding impacts on racialized women's bodies in America. The discussion transitions to the implications of geopolitics at play nationally and cascading impacts globally, focusing on humanitarian and emergency settings. Using a medical humanities perspective, authors highlight the collision between politics and reproductive health policy and its implications on social determinants of health, such as women's education, employment, housing, racial and gender equity and wellbeing. Long standing advocates, community leaders and healers, leading scientists, birth attendants, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals/providers and humanitarian workers – and many others - are reminded and live the weight of the continuous battle of population control, stemming from the oppressive history of control and exploitation. Background Several case reports abound in literature about cases of histoplasmosis misdiagnosed as tuberculosis (TB). Nigeria is one of the highest TB-burdened countries, but data on histoplasmosis in Nigeria are sparse in the literature. The aim of this research was to investigate patients with presumptive pulmonary TB in Calabar, Nigeria, for histoplasmosis. Methods This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 213 participants with presumptive diagnosis of pulmonary TB between April 2020 and March 2021. Urine samples were collected from selected patients for Histoplasma antigen test using enzyme immunoassay kits, while sputum samples were collected for GeneXpert test for confirmed diagnosis of TB and conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of histoplasmosis. Results Of the 213 participants enrolled into the study, 94 subjects (44.1%) were confirmed TB patients, 75 (35.2%) were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, 41 (19.2%) had advanced HIV disease (AHD), and 138 (64.8%) were HIV negative. Twenty-seven of the 213 participants were Histoplasma positive by antigen test and/or PCR, giving an overall prevalence rate of 12.7%. The prevalence of histoplasmosis among confirmed TB patients (7.4% [7/94]) was significantly lower than in unconfirmed TB patients (16.8% [20/119]) (P  = .04). Participants on anti-TB therapy also had a significantly lower rate of histoplasmosis compared to those not on anti-TB drugs (P  = .00006). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing of the Histoplasma revealed a closely relatedness to Histoplasma capsulatum. Conclusions Histoplasmosis is not uncommon among presumptive TB patients. This study investigated the effectiveness of novel and innovative pretreatments (NIP) using thermoultrasound and microwave-mediated freeze-thaw (TSFT, MWFT) for improving the mid-infrared drying of dragon fruit, as compared with recent pretreatment methods using cold plasma (CP), ultrasound (US), edible coating (EC), microwave and infrared blanching (MWB, IRB). Except for EC, all selected pretreatment methods induced ultrastructural changes, resulting in accelerated moisture removal and reduced drying time. In addition, all the pretreatments also induced modifications in colour, structure, and texture, with NIP demonstrating superior outcomes for colour, rehydration, shrinkage, and hardness properties. Blanching pretreatments (MWB and IRB) improved phytochemical and antioxidant properties, including total phenolics, betacyanin, betaxanthin, CUPRAC, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and ABTS, except for ascorbic acid, which was better preserved by TSFT.
