The temperature-dependent phonons are a generalization of interatomic force constants varying in T, which as found widespread use in computing the thermal transport of materials. A formal justification for using this combination to access thermal conductivity in anharmonic crystals, beyond the harmonic approximation and perturbation theory, is still lacking. In this work, we derive a theory of heat transport of anharmonic crystals, using the mode-coupling theory of anharmonic lattice dynamics. Starting from the Green-Kubo formula, we develop the thermal conductivity tensor based on the system's dynamical susceptibility, or spectral function. Our results account for both the diagonal and off-diagonal contributions of the heat current, with and without collective effects. We implement our theory in the TDEP package, and have notably introduced a Monte Carlo scheme to compute phonon scattering due to third- and fourth-order interactions, achieving a substantial reduction in computational cost which enables full convergence of such calculations for the first time. We apply our methodology to systems with varying regimes of anharmonicity and thermal conductivity to demonstrate its universality. These applications highlight the importance of the phonon renormalizations and their interactions beyond the harmonic order. Overall, our work advances the understanding of thermal conductivity in anharmonic crystals and provides a theoretically robust framework for predicting heat transport in complex materials.

The Raman active G mode in graphene exhibits strong coupling to electrons, yet the comprehensive treatment of this interaction in the calculation of its temperature-dependent Raman spectrum remains incomplete. In this study, we calculate the temperature dependence of the G mode frequency and linewidth, and successfully explain the experimental trend, by accounting for the contributions arising from the first-order electron-phonon coupling, electron-mediated phonon-phonon coupling, and standard lattice anharmonicity. The Fornax galaxy cluster is the richest nearby (D ~ 20 Mpc) galaxy association in the southern sky. As such, it provides a wealth of oportunities to elucidate on the processes where environment holds a key role in transforming galaxies. Although it has been the focus of many studies, Fornax has never been explored with contiguous homogeneous wide-field imaging in 12 photometric narrow- and broad-bands like those provided by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). In this paper we present the S-PLUS Fornax Project (S+FP) that aims to comprehensively analyse the galaxy content of the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS. Our data set consists of 106 S-PLUS wide-field frames (FoV ~ 1.4 x 1.4 deg$^2$) observed in five SDSS-like ugriz broad-bands and seven narrow-bands covering specific spectroscopic features like [OII], CaII H+K, H$\delta$, G-band, Mg b triplet, H$\alpha$, and the CaII triplet. Based on S-PLUS specific automated photometry, aimed at correctly detecting Fornax galaxies and globular clusters in S-PLUS images, our dataset provides the community with catalogues containing homogeneous 12-band photometry for ~ 3 x 10$^6$ resolved and unresolved objects within a region extending over ~ 208 deg$^2$ (~ 5 Rvir in RA) around Fornax' central galaxy, NGC 1399. We further explore the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations to identify 45 Fornax-like clusters and generate mock images on all 12 S-PLUS bands of these structures down to galaxies with M$\star \geq 10^8$ M$\odot$. We present tests of a new method to simultaneously estimate stellar population and emission line (EL) properties of galaxies out of S-PLUS photometry. The technique uses the AlStar code, updated with an empirical prior which greatly improves its ability to estimate ELs using only the survey's 12 bands. The tests compare the output of (noise-perturbed) synthetic photometry of SDSS galaxies to properties derived from previous full spectral fitting and detailed EL analysis. For realistic signal-to-noise ratios, stellar population properties are recovered to better than 0.2 dex in masses, mean ages, metallicities and $\pm 0.2$ mag for the extinction. More importantly, ELs are recovered remarkably well for a photometric survey. We obtain input $-$ output dispersions of 0.05--0.2 dex for the equivalent widths of $[\mathrm{O}\,\rm{II}]$, $[\mathrm{O}\,\rm{III}]$, H$\beta$, H$\alpha$, $[\mathrm{N}\,\rm{II}]$, and $[\mathrm{S}\,\rm{II}]$, and even better for lines stronger than $\sim 5$ $\mathring{A}$. These excellent results are achieved by combining two empirical facts into a prior which restricts the EL space available for the fits: (1) Because, for the redshifts explored here, H$\alpha$ and $[\mathrm{N}\,\rm{II}]$ fall in a single narrow band (J0660), their combined equivalent width is always well recovered, even when $[\mathrm{N}\,\rm{II}]$/H$\alpha$ is not. (2) We know from SDSS that $W_{H\alpha+[\mathrm{N}\,\rm{II}]}$ correlates with $[\mathrm{N}\,\rm{II}]$/H$\alpha$, which can be used to tell if a galaxy belongs to the left or right wings in the classical BPT diagnostic diagram. The dynamical properties of nuclei, carried by the concept of phonon quasiparticles (QP), are central to the field of condensed matter. While the harmonic approximation can reproduce a number of properties observed in real crystals, the inclusion of anharmonicity in lattice dynamics is essential to accurately predict properties such as heat transport or thermal expansion. For highly anharmonic systems, non perturbative approaches are needed, which result in renormalized theories of lattice dynamics. In this article, we apply the Mori-Zwanzig projector formalism to derive an exact generalized Langevin equation describing the quantum dynamics of nuclei in a crystal. By projecting this equation on quasiparticles in reciprocal space, and with results from linear response theory, we obtain a formulation of vibrational spectra that fully accounts for the anharmonicity. Using a mode-coupling approach, we construct a systematic perturbative expansion in which each new order is built to minimize the following ones. With a truncation to the lowest order, we show how to obtain a set of self-consistent equations that can describe the lineshapes of quasiparticles. The only inputs needed for the resulting set of equations are the static Kubo correlation functions, which can be computed using (fully quantum) path-integral molecular dynamics or approximated with (classical or ab initio) molecular dynamics. We illustrate the theory with an application on fcc 4He, an archetypal quantum crystal with very strong anharmonicity.

The photometric and morphological analysis of galaxies in clusters provides invaluable information regarding the evolutionary stage of the cluster itself. In addition, it helps to understand how the environment affects the properties of the galaxies and, as a consequence, their evolutionary path. In this contribution we present the first steps on the photometric and morphological analysis of galaxies in the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS data. We expect that the S-PLUS novel filter set and wide field coverage allow us to obtain new information about Fornax and its galaxy population., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures. We report the fabrication, characterization, and modeling of photoconductive antennas using 40 nm thin-film flakes of black phosphorus (BP) as the photoconductor and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as a capping layer to prevent oxidation of BP. Dipole antennas were fabricated on oxidized high-resistivity Si substrates, and BP and hBN flakes were picked up and transferred onto the antenna inside a nitrogen glovebox. The transfer matrix technique was used to optimize the thickness of BP and hBN for maximum absorption. BP flakes were aligned with the armchair axis along the anode-cathode gap of the antenna, with crystal orientation measured using reflection anisotropy. Photocurrent imaging under illumination with 100 fs pulses at 780 and 1560 nm showed a bias-dependent maximum photocurrent localized to the antenna gap with a peak photoconductivity of 1 (2) S/cm in the linear regime of bias for excitation at 780 (1560) nm. Photocurrent saturation in bias (pump fluence) occurred at approximately 1 V (0.25 mJ/cm$^2$). Device performance was modeled numerically by solving Maxwell's equations and the drift-diffusion equation to obtain the photocurrent density in response to pulsed laser excitation, which was largely in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations. THz output computed from surface current density suggests that BP THz PCA performance is at least comparable to more traditional devices based on low-temperature-grown GaAs. These devices represent a step toward high-performance THz photoconductive antennas using BP.

In this work we investigate knowledge acquisition as performed by multiple agents interacting as they infer, under the presence of observation errors, respective models of a complex system. We focus the specific case in which, at each time step, each agent takes into account its current observation as well as the average of the models of its neighbors. The agents are connected by a network of interaction of Erd\H{o}s-Renyi or Barabasi-Albert type. First we investigate situations in which one of the agents has a different probability of observation error (higher or lower). It is shown that the influence of this special agent over the quality of the models inferred by the rest of the network can be substantial, varying linearly with the respective degree of the agent with different estimation error. In case the degree of this agent is taken as a respective fitness parameter, the effect of the different estimation error is even more pronounced, becoming superlinear. To complement our analysis, we provide the analytical solution of the overall behavior of the system. We also investigate the knowledge acquisition dynamic when the agents are grouped into communities. We verify that the inclusion of edges between agents (within a community) having higher probability of observation error promotes the loss of quality in the estimation of the agents in the other communities., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.
