In this paper we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC unique features are the so-called "self-calibration", a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e. the ability to separate the signal in various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150 GHz and 220 GHz. A technological demonstrator is currently under testing and will be deployed in Argentina during 2019, while the final instrument is expected to be installed during 2020., Comment: Proceedings of the 2018 ICNFP conference, Crete. In this paper we discuss the Planck-LFI in-flight calibration campaign. After a brief overview of the ground test campaigns, we describe in detail the calibration and performance verification (CPV) phase, carried out in space during and just after the cool-down of LFI. We discuss in detail the functionality verification, the tuning of the front-end and warm electronics, the preliminary performance assessment and the thermal susceptibility tests. The logic, sequence, goals and results of the in-flight tests are discussed. All the calibration activities were successfully carried out and the instrument response was comparable to the one observed on ground. "This paper is part of the Prelaunch status LFI papers published on JINST: http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/-page=extra.proc5/jinst" This paper describes the Planck Low Frequency Instrument tuning activities performed through the ground test campaigns, from Unit to Satellite Levels. Tuning is key to achieve the best possible instrument performance and tuning parameters strongly depend on thermal and electrical conditions. For this reason tuning has been repeated several times during ground tests and it has been repeated in flight before starting nominal operations. The paper discusses the tuning philosophy, the activities and the obtained results, highlighting developments and changes occurred during test campaigns. This PhD thesis deals with the realization of two original software tools for the Euclid Space Mission: 1. an End-to-End Mission Performance Simulator (E2ES) 2. a code to improve the wavelength calibration of the Euclid NISP spectroscopic data. Euclid is a mission selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) at the end of 2011 to understand the nature of the dark Universe. Starting from 2022, Euclid will investigate the distance-redshift relationship and the evolution of cosmic structures by means of two instruments: the Visual Imager (VIS) and the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP). The NISP instrument is designed to carry out slitless spectroscopy (for galaxy clustering probe) and imaging photometry (to detect weak lensing effects) in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength. The design of a space mission is a long and complex process. The support of dedicated software tools is necessary, especially for the performance analysis of the mission itself. The request is then for specific tools that can simulate the complete behavior of the probe, its payload (i.e. those elements of the spacecraft specifically dedicated to producing mission data), and scientific data acquisition starting from synthetic scenes. A mission performance simulator (E2ES) with reduced simulation capabilities (called "Proto E2ES") has been implemented using the Python programming language in the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA) contract IPL-PTE/GLC/al/241.2014. My research job focused on the verification and validation of the simulator. In accordance to actual ESA software standardization, I developed a verification and validation process (contained in the "Euclid E2ES Verification and Validation Plan") to check the consistency and meaningfulness of output data resulting from the entire simulation chain; to check that the simulation output products are within the identified figure of merit; to determine whether or not the simulator software complies with the scientific requirements established in the baseline requirements document, and to define the test cases for the verification. A simulation on the entire input test catalog has been performed and all test cases foreseen by the plan completed with success. Exploiting the experience matured on the validation of the Euclid proto-E2ES, a collaboration started with INAF-IASF Milano to assess if the wavelength calibration accuracy of the NISP spectroscopic data can be validated using spectra of bright stars. Using stellar spectra of the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF), a deformation is applied to the spectra itself in order to reproduce the non-ideal nature of the NISP instrument. Also reference stellar spectra ("templates")are deformed, and the best match between the observed deformed spectrum and template is obtained through the evaluation of a merit function, the correlation function. The correlation has then been computed for all stellar spectra of the input catalog and templates. The scatter of the cross-correlation peak position for the different magnitude bins has been plotted against the magnitude itself. Results show that NISP spectra location validation can be successfully performed using stellar spectra for stars up to J-band magnitude equal to 17.0. Furthermore, the spatially varying wavelength solution across the field-of-view is accurate to a level of 0.4 pixels for stellar spectra up to J-band magnitude = 15.5.

Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is performed early in pregnancy, typically at the end of the first trimester using cell-free DNA (cfDNA) to identify 3 commonly occurring trisomies (13, 18, and 21).

- Abstract
In this paper, we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the-art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC’s unique features are the so-called “self-calibration”, a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e., the ability to separate the signal into various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150GHz and 220 GHz. A technological demonstrator is currently under testing and will be deployed in Argentina during 2019, while the final instrument is expected to be installed during 2020

In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the "Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. - Abstract
QUBIC, the QU Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel forthcoming instrument to measure the B-mode polarization anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The detection of the B-mode signal will be extremely challenging; QUBIC has been designed to address this with a novel approach, namely bolometric interferometry. The receiver cryostat is exceptionally large and cools complex optical and detector stages to 40 K, 4 K, 1 K and 350 mK using two pulse tube coolers, a novel 4He sorption cooler and a double-stage 3He/4He sorption cooler. We discuss the thermal and mechanical design of the cryostat, modelling and thermal analysis, and laboratory cryogenic testing.

- Abstract
QUBIC (the Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a ground-based experiment which seeks to improve the current constraints on the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. It exploits the unique technique, among Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, of bolometric interferometry, combining together the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects typical of interferometers. QUBIC will perform sky observations in polarization, in two frequency bands centered at 150 and 220 GHz, with two kilo-pixel focal plane arrays of NbSi Transition-Edge Sensors (TES) cooled down to 350 mK. A subset of the QUBIC instrument, the so called QUBIC Technological Demonstrator (TD), with a reduced number of detectors with respect to the full instrument, will be deployed and commissioned before the end of 2018. The voltage-biased TES are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing and an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. This MUX factor is reached with two-stage multiplexing: a traditional one exploiting Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K. The former provides a MUX factor of 32, while the latter provides a further 4. Each TES array is composed of 256 detectors and read out with four modules of 32 SQUIDs and two ASICs. A custom software synchronizes and manages the readout and detector operation, while the TES are sampled at 780 Hz (100kHz/128 MUX rate). In this work we present the experimental characterization of the QUBIC TES arrays and their multiplexing readout chain, including time constant, critical temperature, and noise properties.

- Abstract
In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the “Large Scale Polarization Explorer” (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the “B-modes” of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the “Observatorio del Teide” in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. The on-site verification and calibration of the whole instrument will prepare STRIP for a 2-years campaign for the observation of the CMB polarization.

- Abstract
QUBIC, the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel ground-based instrument that aims to measure the extremely faint B-mode polarisation anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background at intermediate angular scales (multipoles of = 30 − 200). Primordial B-modes are a key prediction of Inflation as they can only be produced by gravitational waves in the very early universe. To achieve this goal, QUBIC will use bolometric interferometry, a technique that combines the sensitivity of an imager with the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer. It will directly observe the sky through an array of back-to-back entry horns whose beams will be superimposed using a cooled quasioptical beam combiner. Images of the resulting interference fringes will be formed on two focal planes, each tiled with transition-edge sensors, cooled down to 320 mK. A dichroic filter placed between the optical combiner and the focal planes will select two frequency bands (centred at 150 GHz and 220 GHz), one frequency per focal plane. Polarization modulation will be achieved using a cold stepped half-wave plate (HWP) and polariser in front of the sky-facing horns. The full QUBIC instrument is described elsewhere1,2,3,4; in this paper we will concentrate in particular on simulations of the optical combiner (an off-axis Gregorian imager) and the feedhorn array. We model the optical performance of both the QUBIC full module and a scaled-down technological demonstrator which will be used to validate the full instrument design. Optical modelling is carried out using full vector physical optics with a combination of commercial and in-house software. In the high-frequency channel we must be careful to consider the higher-order modes that can be transmitted by the horn array. This test was devoted to characterise the i-V response of LNAs when Vg1 and Vg2 are independently changed over a defined set of values. In the specific, It was aimed at investigating possible changes in the response from radiometers due to ground shift or any other possible non ideal effect. In the case that any results were sensibly different respect to the same test in CSL, the new I -V curves shall be used to modify/correct the drain current model used to draw the PRE- Tuning hyper-matrixes, according to the measured bias shift.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) Tuning of the LFI has been accomplished at several stages of integration, with different procedures. During these procedures, the system noise temperature (Tsys) and isolation have been used as the figures of merit for optimising performance, since they can be estimated with high signal-to-noise in a short period of time. In fact, for the LFI receivers, the calibrated noise and 1/f characteristics are the true indicators of scientific performance. In principle, calibrated white noise can be derived directly from the system temperature and noise effective bandwidth, but in practice there are noise contributions and other complications which make it hard to be sure that white noise predicted by Tsys and bandwidth will be achieved. With a receiver topology as complex as LFI, it is even possible that optimising Tsys and isolation may cause us to miss the actual optimum white noise bias point. With this in mind, we developed the following verification test based on the Hypermatrix tuning: set LFI for nominal operations (DAE gain and offset tuned to allow measurement of the true radiometer white noise); acquire data (30 seconds) at each of the nominal hypermatrix tuning bias points, in the same manner as was done for the hypermatrix tuning; change the 4K load temperature by a known amount; again acquire data at all the hypermatrix bias points; white noise is estimated from each 30 second period, and then calibrated using the corresponding data from the known temperature step of the 4K load.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) The assessment of the noise properties of the LFI instrument is the main objective of this test. The test is split into two parts. In the first part, the LFI is run unswitched acquiring data in all four phase switch configurations. Power spectra from unswitched data is compared in order to assess whether there is any configuration that is preferable from the point of 1/f noise slope. In the second part, the LFI is run switched for several hours and the full noise properties are characterised in both switching configurations (A/C or B/D) while the non-switching phase switch is kept in its nominal position.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This document describes the results of the Hypermatrix pre–tuning activities. The pre–tuning is aimed at exploring the LNAs bias space changing simultaneously the four Vg biases powering each radiometer, in order to focus the bias region expected to provide the best performance. Noise Temperature is the figure of merit. It is measured roughly by calculating Y factor based on the sky – ref unbalancing over the same BEM diode when the 4KHz switching is enabled. Previous tests conducted on data from CSL campaign demonstrated that a good agreement between this rough calculation and the true Y-factor method ( basing on two reference temperatures provided by the 4K stage cooldown) is achievable.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) Spurious frequency spikes at the fundamental frequency of 1 Hz are known to be present in the LFI scientific data caused by an anomalous interaction between the DAE housekeeping sequencer and the scientific channels. The effect is a spurious signal that adds to the radiometric output after detection and is characterized by frequency spikes at the fundamental frequency of 1 Hz. These spikes are characterized by a series of tests run during all the test campaign in order to check this effect in different situations. Tests performed on ground at satellite level have shown that the effect of these spikes on the LFI science is expected to be very small; therefore the main objectives of the same tests performed during CPV is to compare results with those obtained during the CSL test campaign.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This test consists of a 12-hours data acquisition performed with the instrument set with “CRYO” biases, i.e. the biases that have been obtained in CSL after the tuning activities. The objective of this test is to verify the readiness of the instrument for the CPV bias tuning activity from the signal stability point of view. As during this test the 4K temperature was still around 20 K and the stability was not optimized yet the check on knee frequency is meaningful just from the functionality point of view. No comparison is done between the calculated knee frequencies and the LFI scientific requirements.

The temperature of the LFI focal plane (FPU) is changed over 4 values, each step having a duration > 3h, depending on the step. The temperature variations are of about 0.3 K each. The measured receivers output will be characterized as a function of FPU temperature variations.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This document describes the activities performed during the first phase switch (PSW) tuning and verification test performed during CPV. The objective of this test, composed of two steps, is to find the optimal bias currents to the front-end phase switches that balance the wave amplitude in the two-phase switch states. An optimal balance has an impact on the receiver isolation, therefore the first part of the test (P_PVP_LFI_0004_01, namely tuning) was performed before the tuning of the front-end modules amplifiers. The second part (P_PVP_LFI_0004_02, namely verification) was performed after the tuning of the front-end modules to verify the impact on phase switch balancing of different amplifiers biases. The test was performed only on 30 and 44GHz RCAs as planned.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This document describes the results from the Functionality Reference Test (FRT) The FRT is composed of two parts, devoted to different tasks. The first part is identical to the CRYO 02: it is devoted to checking the functionality of radiometers in all the possible phase switch and 4KHz combinations, after the HYM Tuning (that was considered a possible source of stress for radiometers) and to compare with it. In particular, the LNAs drain currents will be compared, together with the noise properties as 1/f, white noise, spikes. The output voltage can be compared just roughly considering the sky signal, because the ref signal decreases due to 4K cooler cooldown: this rough comparison must take into account possible differences in the SCS temperature ( driving the FPU temperature and hence the LNAs gain) and the radiometers Isolation ( the signal leaking from the Reference loads and mixing with the Sky signal is proportional to the Reference Load temperature). The second part is identical to the same test performed in CSL (Liege , 2008), but is performed with the LNAs bias set to the final configuration outcome from the HYM Tuning. This test, similar from the procedural point of view to the CRYO 01, is devoted to setting a reference point for the future of the survey, characterizing one by one all the LNAs measuring both the scientific output and the bias ( drain currents). This is operation can be repeated at any time during the survey, with a minimum effect on other channels not under test.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This test consists in five steps, of about 15 minutes, with different blanking times: 7.5 µιχρο−s, 0 µιχρο−s, 15 µιχρο−s, 22.5 µιχρο−s, and again 7.5 µιχρο−s. In particular, we want to verify that: no current drops or abrupt variations are observed in FEM drain currents; no frequency spikes are observed besides those already characterised during the SPIKE-02 test; frequency spikes are not affected by the different blanking time values; no pop-corn noise is detected in radiometer voltage outputs.

Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) In this report, we show the results of the DAE calibration activity performed during the CPV test phase of the Planck/LFI instrument. The activity has the purpose of finding the best gain and offset values for the 44 ACA implemented in the LFI, and characterizing the so-called “offset problem”, i.e. a spurious offset that the DAE applies to scientific data under some conditions. During the CPV phase, the DAE calibration has been repeated twice, because after the first calibration a new configuration for the LFI ACA biases has been loaded and the absolute voltage levels fed to the DAE have changed consequently. This document shows the results for both calibrations.

- Abstract
Planck LFI Commissioning and Performance Verification (CPV) This document describes the activities performed during the CRYO_02 functionality test. This test consists in two hours of data acquisition in which the radiometers are run in switching mode and during which all four possible phase switch configurations are tested. The objective of this test is to verify that the radiometers are functional from the point of view of the front-end amplifiers and that the pseudo-correlation differential scheme is effective in reducing 1/f noise instabilities.
