39. The Work Done in Rome by Children and Adolescents: Hypothesis Based on the Anthropological Analysis of Three Suburban Necropolises of the Imperial Age

Abstract

We analyzed 95 non-adult individuals from three Imperial Roman burial grounds to explore the child labour in ancient Rome. The necropolis’ analysed are Casal Bertone, Castel Malnome, and Lucrezia Romana, characterised by three different subsistence economy patterns. Considering the total sample, 69.5% of individuals have enthesopathies attributable to work commitments of medium severity. Specifically, individuals from Casal Bertone and Castel Malnome were the most affected in the scapular girdle, which is consistent with the activities carried out in the Fullery (fullonica) and the salt plains, respectively. Abstract

La retorica classica designa col nome di ekphrasis la dettagliata descrizione verbale di un oggetto o soggetto concreto, ossia la conversione in parole di qualcosa che si intende far “vedere” ponendolo sotto gli occhi di chi legge. Campo privilegiato di applicazione sono le arti visive, la cui critica è chiamata a rendere con parole immagini vuoi reali vuoi di fantasia, traducendole dalla fissità del dato visivo alla sequenza temporale di un discorso verbale. Nel caso dell’arte musicale la ekphrasis punta a restituire in parole sequenze sonore a loro volta temporalmente orientate, e in ciò diverge dalla rappresentazione verbale delle arti visive, le quali vivono in una dimensione spaziale. Senonché in musica i significati, che pure esistono, non sono generalmente denotati secondo un sistema semantico determinato, e necessitano perciò di processi di transcodificazione e di prestiti lessicali. Anche nella descrizione poetica di un’opera d’arte visiva (p.es. i sonetti in cui il Marino descrive, animandola e drammatizzandola, l’immagine della metamorfosi di Dafne in alloro nel gruppo marmoreo del Bernini) la ekphrasis può sfociare nella fioritura di tropi poetici che determinano un netto incremento semantico. Tale arricchimento del significato è addirittura ancor più necessario nella ekphrasis musicale, che tendenzialmente sposta l’oggetto della rappresentazione dal dato fisico-acustico, o dal sistema semiografico specifico, alle sensazioni che esso produce nell’ascoltatore. Di fatto la mélophrasis – così è stata di recente ribattezzata –, più che appuntarsi sul testo musicale, finisce per riguardare l’effetto suscitato, e dunque il fruitore e i di lui processi di interiorizzazione. Ne consegue un cospicuo slittamento dalla denotazione alla connotazione, mediante ampio (ma non per questo incontrollato) ricorso a procedimenti metaforici, applicati vuoi alle immagini sonore della composizione, vuoi alle componenti prossemiche e ambientali dell’esecuzione, vuoi infine agli specifici fonosimbolismi offerti da talune partiture., Musica Docta, Vol. 10 (2020)

47. Topical Hemostatic Agents in Burn Surgery: A Systematic Review.

Abstract

Acute burn surgery has long been associated with significant intra-operative bleeding. Several techniques were introduced to limit hemorrhage, including tourniquets, tumescent infiltration, and topical agents. To date, no study has comprehensively investigated the available data regarding topical hemostatic agents in burn surgery. A systematic review was performed by two independent reviewers using electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) from first available to September 10, 2021. Articles were included if they were published in English and described or evaluated topical hemostatic agents used in burn excision and/or grafting. Data were extracted on the agent(s) used, their dosage, mode of delivery, hemostasis outcomes, and complications. The search identified 1982 nonduplicate citations, of which 134 underwent full-text review, and 49 met inclusion criteria. In total, 32 studies incorporated a vasoconstrictor agent, and 28 studies incorporated a procoagulant agent. Four studies incorporated other agents (hydrogen peroxide, tranexamic acid, collagen sheets, and TT-173). The most common vasoconstrictor used was epinephrine, with doses ranging from 1:1000 to 1:1,000,000. The most common procoagulant used was thrombin, with doses ranging from 10 to 1000 IU/ml. Among the comparative studies, outcomes of blood loss were not reported in a consistent manner, therefore meta-analysis could not be performed. The majority of studies (94%) were level of evidence III–V. Determining the optimal topical hemostatic agent is limited by low-quality data and challenges with consistent reporting of intra-operative blood loss. Given the routine use of topical hemostatic agents in burn surgery, high-quality research is essential to determine the optimal agent, dosage, and mode of delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
