Abstract

Increase in calcium ions is an early pathophysiological event in bile salt-induced cellular injury and an important role is played by the extracellular calcium ions in this effect as revealed by the study of rabbit gastric mucosal cells. Decreased deoxycholate (DC)-induced injury in the absence of extracellular calcium ions occurs because of the protection from cellular hypercalcemia.

Calcium was essential for the K+release mediated by the epinephrine α-receptor in rat parotid slices. The pattern of K+release was the same, whether calcium or epinephrine was added as the last component. Mg2+appeared to compete with Ca2+and partially inhibited K+release.

17. Potassium Release Mediated by the Epinephrine α-Receptor in Rat Parotid Slices

Abstract

Epinephrine caused rapid release of intracellular K+by acting on an α-adrenergic receptor in rat parotid gland slices. Continuous measurement by a K+-selective electrode served as an assay for the α-adrenergic response. The reaction reached a plateau 3 to 5 min after epinephrine addition when 30 to 50% of the K+which had been in the slices was released. Isoproterenol, which is specific for β-adrenergic receptors and causes amylase secretion from the slices, did not induce K+release. The concentration of epinephrine which caused a half-maximal K+release was 15 µm, whereas the concentration which caused a half-maximal rate of amylase secretion in the same system was almost two orders of magnitude lower (0.2 µm).

18. Enzyme Secretion Mediated by the Epinephrine β-Receptor in Rat Parotid Slices

Abstract

Enzyme secretion caused by epinephrine in rat parotid slices is accelerated by addition of inosine and adenine to the medium. The purines apparently aid in maintaining the ATP supply. Epinephrine causes a decrease of the intracellular ATP concentration within 1 min after its addition to the slices. Ouabain which inhibits the Na+,K+-activated ATPase, thus conserving ATP, accelerates enzyme secretion induced by epinephrine. Therefore, it is tentatively concluded that the Na+,K+-activated ATPase is not involved in enzyme secretion. Conditions which produce a high extent of enzyme secretion (>80% of the total amylase secreted in 90 min) are defined and analyzed. In the presence of epinephrine, a high extent of enzyme secretion is obtained when calcium is omitted from the medium or when the potassium in the medium is raised from 5 to 50 mm. When epinephrine is replaced by isoproterenol or by N6-monobutyryl 3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate, a high extent of enzyme secretion is obtained also in the regular Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate medium which contains 5 mmpotassium and 2.5 mmcalcium. The reagents which produce a high extent of enzyme secretion are those which activate the process without concomitantly activating the release of potassium from the slices. It is shown in the accompanying papers that the potassium release is specifically induced by an epinephrine α-receptor.

37. A Preliminary Assessment of Croatian SME Exporters' Internationalization: Is There a Gap?

Abstract

This paper deals with an analysis of the internationalization process of Croatian SME exporters. The traditional theory of internationalization suggests that a firm gradually develops an international presence. Internationalization process can be divided into two aspects: attitudinal (orientational) and strategic action. Preliminary research was conducted in two stages. First the findings from secondary data analysis suggest that Croatian SME exporters are oriented towards regional markets. Also, the notion that size of the company significantly determines the number of the export markets that the firms serves has been confirmed in the Croatian setting as well as in a previous research. Secondly, the primary research indicates that Croatian SME exporters are showing significant signs of geocentric behavior (through the global mindset scale) but yet most of their exports are reaching the countries in region mostly. This gap represents an interesting research proposal for further future investigations within the internationalization phenomenon.
