We report measurements of the low temperature magnetization $M$ and specific heat $C$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field of the quasi-one-dimensional spin chain, heavy fermion compound YbFe$_5$P$_3$, which resides close to a quantum critical point. The results are compared to the predictions of scaling laws obtained from a generalized free energy function expected near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (AFQCP). The scaling behavior depends on the dimensionality $d$ of the fluctuations, the coherence length exponent $\nu$, and the dynamic exponent $z$. The free energy treats the magnetic field as a relevant renormalization group variable, which leads to a new exponent $\phi=\nu z_h$, where $z_h$ is a dynamic exponent expected in the presence of a magnetic field. When $z_h=z$, $T/H$ scaling is expected, as observed in several compounds close to a QCP; whereas in YbFe$_5$P$_3$, a $T/H^{3/4}$ dependence of the scaling is observed. This dependence reflects the relationship $z_h=(4z/3)$ and a field exponent $\phi =4/3$. A feature of the scaling law is that it restricts the possible values of the exponents to two cases for YbFe$_5$P$_3$: $d$=1, $\nu$=1, $z$=1, and $d$=2, $\nu$=1/2, $z$=2., Comment: 17 pages (including Supplemental Material)

CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is unusual in that its ferromagnetic transition can be suppressed continuously to zero temperature, i.e., to a ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP), through the application of modest hydrostatic pressure. This discovery has raised the possibility that the ferromagnetic QCP may be of the Kondo-breakdown type characterized by a jump in Fermi volume, to which thermopower S measurements should be sensitive. Though $S/T$ changes both sign and magnitude around the critical pressure P$_{c}\approx{}0.8$ GPa, these changes are not abrupt but extend over a pressure interval from within the ferromagnetic state up to P$_c$. Together with temperature and pressure variations in electrical resistivity and previously reported heat capacity, thermopower results point to the near coincidence of two sequential effects near P$_c$, delocalization of 4f degrees-of-freedom through orbital-selective hybridization followed by quantum criticality of itinerant ferromagnetism., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy fermion materials, which show an anomalous $T^3$ heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP), but is strongly correlated with $T_N$, indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. Uranium ditelluride (UTe$_2$) has attracted recent interest due to its unique superconducting properties, which include the potential for a topological odd-parity superconducting state. Recently, ac-calorimetry measurements under pressure indicate a change in the ground state of UTe$_2$ from superconducting to antiferromagnetic at 1.4 GPa. Here, we investigate the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of UTe$_2$ up to 25 GPa at room temperature using x-ray diffraction. We find that UTe$_2$, which at ambient conditions has an orthorhombic ($Immm$) structure, transforms to a body-centered tetragonal ($I4/mmm$) structure at 5 GPa in a quasi-hydrostatic neon (Ne) pressure transmitting medium. In the absence of a pressure-transmitting medium, this transformation occurs between 5 and 8 GPa. The data were fit with a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state resulting in values of $B_0$=46.0 $\pm$ 0.6 GPa, $B^{\prime}$=9.3 $\pm$ 0.5 (no pressure medium) and $B_0$=42.5 $\pm$ 2.0 GPa, $B^{\prime}$=9.3 (fixed) (neon pressure medium) for the $Immm$ phase. For the $I4/mmm$ phase, $B_0$=78.9 $\pm$ 0.5 GPa and $B^{\prime}$=4.2 $\pm$ 0.1 (no pressure transmitting medium), and $B_0$=70.0 $\pm$ 1.1 GPa and $B^{\prime}$=4.1 $\pm$ 0.2 (neon pressure medium). The high-pressure tetragonal phase is retained after decompression to ambient pressure, with approximately 30% remaining after 2 days. We argue that the observed phase transition into a higher symmetry structure at P~5 GPa (orthorhombic to tetragonal), is accompanied by an increase in the shortest distance between uranium atoms from 3.6 Angstrom (orthorhombic) to 3.9 Angstrom (tetragonal), which suggests localization of the 5f electrons, albeit with a 10.7% decrease in volume., Comment: Includes supplemental material

We report a study of the structural, magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of polycrystalline samples of CeRhC$_2$. CeRhC$_2$ crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with space group $P4_1$ and it orders antiferromagnetically below $T_\textrm{N1} \approx$ 1.8 K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal a chiral magnetic structure with a single propagation vector $Q_m = (1/2,1/2,0.228(5))$, indicating an antiferromagnetic arrangement of Ce magnetic moments in the $ab$-plane and incommensurate order along the $c$-axis with a root-mean-square ordered moment of $m_\textrm{ord}$= 0.68 $\mu_\textrm{B}$/Ce. Applying a magnetic field suppresses the N\'{e}el temperature $T_\textrm{N1}$ to zero near $\mu_0H_\textrm{c1}\sim$0.75 T. A second antiferromagnetic phase ($T_\textrm{N2}$), however, becomes apparent in electrical resistivity, Hall and heat capacity measurements in fields above 0.5 T and extrapolates to zero temperature at $\mu_0H_\textrm{c2}\sim$ 1 T. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that LaRhC$_2$ is a semiconductor with a bandgap of $E_\textrm{g}\sim24$ meV; whereas, resistivity and Hall measurements indicate that CeRhC$_2$ is a semimetal with a low carrier concentration of $n\sim10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. With applied hydrostatic pressure, the zero-field antiferromagnetic transition of CeRhC$_2$ is slightly enhanced and CeRhC$_2$ becomes notably more metallic up to 1.36 GPa. The trend toward metallicity is in line with density-functional calculations that indicate that both LaRhC$_2$ and CeRhC$_2$ are semimetals, but the band overlap is larger for CeRhC$_2$, which has a smaller unit cell volume that its La counterpart. This suggests that the bandgap closes due to a lattice contraction when replacing La with Ce in RRhC$_2$ (R = rare-earth), in agreement with experimental results.

UTe2 is a newly discovered unconventional superconductor, where electron Cooper pairs combine into a spin-triplet ground state. Here we report the specific heat C(H,T) of a high-quality single crystal of UTe2 with a single specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature T_c {\approx} 2 K and a small zero-field residual Sommerfeld coefficient {\gamma}_0 = C/T (T=0) = 10 mJ/mol-K^2. We applied magnetic field up to 12 T along the three principal crystallographic axes of UTe2 to probe the nature of the superconducting state. The evolution of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient as a function of magnetic field, {\gamma}_0 (H), is highly anisotropic and reveals distinct regions. In magnetic field up to 4 T applied along a, b, and c axes, we find {\gamma}_0{\approx}{\alpha}_i {\square}H, with i=a,b,c, as expected for an unconventional superconductor with nodes (zeros) of the superconducting order parameter on the Fermi surface. A pronounced kink in {\gamma}_0(H), however, is observed at roughly 4 T for field applied along both a and b axes, whereas a smooth change from square-root to linear behaviour is observed at 4 T for H//c. These results strongly indicate that a zero-field ground state is stable up to 4 T and undergoes a field-induced evolution above 4 T. {\alpha_c} > {\alpha_a} > {\alpha_b}, indicating that the nodes in the low-field state are predominantly located in the vicinity of the a-b plane. The modification of the order parameter is strongest when field is applied in the a-b plane, which causes nodes to move away from the direction of the applied field. Both d_(B_2u)+id_(B_1u) and d_(B_2u)+id_(A_u) two-component order parameters can account for our observations, with d_(B_2u)+id_(B_1u) a more likely candidate. In either scenario, our measurements indicate that B_2u is the primary superconducting order parameter in UTe2.

Topological superconductivity is a long-sought state of matter in bulk materials, and odd-parity superconductor UTe$_2$ is a prime candidate. The recent observation of a field-trainable spontaneous Kerr signal in UTe$_2$ at the onset of superconductivity provides strong evidence that the superconducting order parameter is multicomponent and breaks time-reversal symmetry. Here, we perform Kerr effect measurements on a number of UTe$_2$ samples -- grown $via$ both chemical vapor transport and the molten-salt-flux methods -- that show a single superconducting transition between 1.6~K and 2.1~K. Our results show no evidence for a spontaneous Kerr signal in zero field measurements. This implies that the superconducting state of UTe$_2$ does not intrinsically break time-reversal symmetry. Instead, we observe a field-trainable signal that varies in magnitude between samples and between different locations on a single sample, which is a sign of inhomogeneous magnetic regions. Our results provide an examination of representative UTe$_2$ samples and place strong constraints on the superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$.

$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$The locally non-centrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral $d$-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group $P6_{3}$/$mmc$ with lattice parameters $a$ = 4.2445(4) ${\AA}$ and $c$ = 8.9513(18) ${\AA}$. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T$_c$ $\sim$2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Surprisingly, heat capacity data show only a small bulk transition at 0.7 K. We discuss the possible origins of the discrepancy between the various measurements., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report a detailed study of the magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of Ce$_2$Te$_5$ single crystals, a layered $f$-electron van der Waals magnet. Four consecutive transitions at $\sim$ 5.2, 2.1, 0.9, and 0.4 K were observed in the $ac$-plane electrical resistivity $\rho$(T), which were further confirmed in specific heat $C_\textrm{p}$(T) measurements. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$(T), the magnetic-field variation of $\rho$(T), and the increase of the first transition temperature ($T_\textrm{c} \sim$ 5.2 K) with applied magnetic field indicates ferromagnetic order, while the decrease of the other transitions with field suggests different states with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions below $T_2 \sim$ 2.1 K, $T_3 \sim$ 0.9 K, and $T_4$ = 0.4 K. Critical behavior analysis around $T_\textrm{c}$ that gives critical exponents $\beta = 0.31(2)$, $\gamma = 0.99(2)$, $\delta = 4.46(1)$, $T_\textrm{c} = 5.32(1)$ K indicates that Ce$_2$Te$_5$ shows a three-dimensional magnetic critical behavior. Moreover, the Hall resistivity $\rho_{\textrm{xy}}$ indicates that Ce$_2$Te$_5$ is a multi-band system with a relatively high electron mobility $\sim 2900$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ near $T_\textrm{c}$, providing further opportunities for future device applications.

Electrons at the border of localization generate exotic states of matter across all classes of strongly correlated electron materials and many other quantum materials with emergent functionality. Heavy electron metals are a model example, in which magnetic interactions arise from the opposing limits of localized and itinerant electrons. This remarkable duality is intimately related to the emergence of a plethora of novel quantum matter states such as unconventional superconductivity, electronic-nematic states, hidden order and most recently topological states of matter such as topological Kondo insulators and Kondo semimetals and putative chiral superconductors. The outstanding challenge is that the archetypal Kondo lattice model that captures the underlying electronic dichotomy is notoriously difficult to solve for real materials. Here we show, using the prototypical strongly-correlated antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$, that a multi-orbital periodic Anderson model embedded with input from ab initio bandstructure calculations can be reduced to a simple Kondo-Heisenberg model, which captures the magnetic interactions quantitatively. We validate this tractable Hamiltonian via high-resolution neutron spectroscopy that reproduces accurately the magnetic soft modes in CeIn$_3$, which are believed to mediate unconventional superconductivity. Our study paves the way for a quantitative understanding of metallic quantum states such as unconventional superconductivity.

Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become incorporated into a collective electronic state. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) on CePd$_3$ to clarify the fate of all relevant energy scales. We find that even spin-orbit excited states acquire pronounced momentum-dependence at low temperature - the telltale sign of hybridization with the underlying metallic state. Our results demonstrate how localized electronic degrees of freedom endow correlated metals with new properties, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of superconducting, electronic nematic, and topological states.

Piezoresistance, the change of a material's electrical resistance ($R$) in response to an applied mechanical stress ($\sigma$), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. We report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4~GPa leads to a resistivity drop of more than 99.95\% that results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of $5000\times10^{-11}$Pa$^{-1}$. Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a novel route to multi-functional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) emerges from intertwined spin and charge degrees of freedom in the form of ferromagnetic clusters also known as trapped magnetic polarons. As a result, CMR is rarely observed in antiferromagnetic materials. Here we use electron spin resonance (ESR) to reveal microscopic evidence for the formation of magnetic polarons in antiferromagnetic Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$. First, we observe a reduction of the Eu$^{2+}$ ESR linewidth as a function of the applied magnetic field consistent with ferromagnetic clusters that are antiferromagnetically coupled. Additionally, the Eu$^{2+}$ lineshape changes markedly below T' ~ 200 K, a temperature scale that coincides with the onset of CMR. The combination of these two effects provide strong evidence that magnetic polarons grow in size below T' and start influencing the macroscopic properties of the system., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Noncentrosymmetric Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to prototypical Kondo insulator Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pt$_{3}$: either Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here we determine the ground state of Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ becomes more insulating under pressure, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)$_{3}$, which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures, includes Supplementary Information (6 pages, 5 Figures)

UTe2 is a newly-discovered unconventional superconductor wherein multicomponent topological superconductivity is anticipated based on the presence of two superconducting transitions and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting state. The observation of two superconducting transitions, however, remains controversial. Here we demonstrate that UTe2 single crystals displaying an optimal superconducting transition temperature at 2 K exhibit a single transition and remarkably high quality supported by their small residual heat capacity in the superconducting state and large residual resistance ratio. Our results shed light on the intrinsic superconducting properties of UTe2 and bring into question whether UTe2 is a multicomponent superconductor at ambient pressure.

Here we investigate the thermodynamic and electronic properties of Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ single crystals. Electrical transport data show that Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ has a semiconducting ground state with a relatively narrow band gap of $320$~meV. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, whereas ferromagnetic interactions dominate at high temperature. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal three phase transitions at $T_{N1}=9.3$~K, $T_{N2} =8.3$~K, and $T_{N3} =4.3$~K. Unlike Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_6$, a related europium-containing Zintl compound, no colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is observed in Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$. We attribute the absence of CMR to the smaller carrier density and the larger distance between Eu ions and In-Sb polyhedra in Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$. Our results indicate that Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ has potential applications as a thermoelectric material through doping or as a long-wavelength detector due to its narrow gap., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Analogous to the Hall effect, the Nernst effect is the generation of a transverse voltage due to a temperature gradient in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The Nernst effect has promise for thermoelectric applications and as a probe of electronic structure. In magnetic materials, a so-called anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is possible in zero magnetic field. Here we report a colossal ANE reaching 23 $\mu$V/K in the ferromagnetic metal UCo$_{0.8}$Ru$_{0.2}$Al. Uranium's $5f$ electrons provide strong electronic correlations that lead to narrow bands, which are a known route to producing a large thermoelectric response. Additionally, the large nuclear charge of uranium generates strong spin-orbit coupling, which produces an intrinsic transverse response in this material due to the Berry curvature associated with the relativistic electronic structure. Theoretical calculations show that at least 148 Weyl nodes and two nodal lines exist within $\pm$ 60 meV of the Fermi level in UCo$_{0.8}$Ru$_{0.2}$Al. This work demonstrates that magnetic actinide materials can host strong Nernst and Hall responses due to their combined correlated and topological nature.

Newly-discovered superconductor UTe$_2$ is a strong contender for a topological spin-triplet state wherein a multi-component order parameter arises from two nearly-degenerate superconducting states. A key issue is whether both of these states intrinsically exist at ambient pressure. Through thermal expansion and calorimetry, we show that UTe$_2$ at ambient conditions exhibits two detectable transitions only in some samples, and the size of the thermal expansion jump at each transition varies when the measurement is performed in different regions of the sample. This result indicates that the two transitions arise from two spatially separated regions that are inhomogeneously mixed throughout the volume of the sample, each with a discrete superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$). Notably, samples with higher T$_c$ only show a single transition at ambient pressure. Above 0.3 GPa, however, two transitions are invariably observed in ac calorimetry. The interplay between unconventional superconductivity and quantum critical ferromagnetism in the U-Ge compounds represents an open problem in strongly correlated electron systems. Sample quality can have a strong influence on both of these ordered states in the compound UCoGe, as is true for most unconventional superconductors. We report results of a new approach at UCoGe crystal growth using a floating-zone method with potential for improvements of sample quality and size as compared with traditional means such as Czochralski growth. Single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe were produced using an ultra-high vacuum electron-beam floating-zone refining technique. Annealed single crystals show well-defined signatures of bulk ferromagnetism and superconductivity at $T_c \sim$2.6 K and $T_s \sim$0.55 K, respectively, in the resistivity and heat capacity. Scanning electron microscopy of samples with different surface treatments shows evidence of an off-stoichiometric uranium rich phase of UCoGe collected in cracks and voids that might be limiting sample quality., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Magnetic skyrmions are well-suited for encoding information because they are nano-sized, topologically stable, and only require ultra-low critical current densities $j_c$ to depin from the underlying atomic lattice. Above $j_c$ skyrmions exhibit well-controlled motion, making them prime candidates for race-track memories. In thin films thermally-activated creep motion of isolated skyrmions was observed below $j_c$ as predicted by theory. Uncontrolled skyrmion motion is detrimental for race-track memories and is not fully understood. Notably, the creep of skyrmion lattices in bulk materials remains to be explored. Here we show using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy--a probe highly sensitive to the coupling between skyrmion and atomic lattices--that in the prototypical skyrmion lattice material MnSi depinning occurs at $j_c^*$ that is only 4 percent of $j_c$. Our experiments are in excellent agreement with Anderson-Kim theory for creep and allow us to reveal a new dynamic regime at ultra-low current densities characterized by thermally-activated skyrmion-lattice-creep with important consequences for applications., Comment: 28 pages, 4+4 figures, 1 table. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1711.08873

We present magnetotransport data on the ferrimagnet GdMn$_6$Sn$_6$. From the temperature dependent data we are able to extract a large instrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect $\sigma_{xz}^{int} \sim$ 32 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ and $\sigma_{xy}^{int} \sim$ 223 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$, which is comparable to values found in other systems also containing kagome nets of transition metals. From our transport anisotropy, as well as our density functional theory calculations, we argue that the system is electronically best described as a three dimensional system. Thus, we show that reduced dimensionality is not a strong requirement for obtaining large Berry phase contributions to transport properties. In addition, the coexistence of rare-earth and transition metal magnetism makes the hexagonal MgFe$_6$Ge$_6$ structure type a promising system to tune the electronic and magnetic properties in future studies.

The Berry curvature in magnetic systems is attracting interest due to the potential tunability of topological features via the magnetic structure. $f$-electrons, with their large spin-orbit coupling, abundance of non-collinear magnetic structures and high electronic tunability, are attractive candidates to search for tunable topological properties. In this study, we measure anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the distorted kagom$\acute{e}$ heavy fermion antiferromagnet U$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$. A large intrinsic AHE in high fields reveals the presence of a large Berry curvature. Moreover, the fields required to obtain the large Berry curvature are significantly different between $B \parallel a$ and $B \parallel a^*$, providing a mechanism to control the topological response in this system. Theoretical calculations illustrate that this sensitivity may be due to the heavy fermion character of the electronic structure. These results shed light on the Berry curvature of a strongly correlated band structure in magnetically frustrated heavy fermion materials, but also emphasize 5$f$-electrons as an ideal playground for studying field-tuned topological states.

Here we investigate antiferromagnetic Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$, a nonsymmorphic Zintl phase. Our electrical transport data show that Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$ is remarkably insulating and exhibits an exceptionally large negative magnetoresistance, which is consistent with the presence of magnetic polarons. From {\it ab initio} calculations, the paramagnetic state of Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$ is a topologically nontrivial semimetal within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), whereas an insulating state with trivial topological indices is obtained using a modified Becke-Johnson potential. Notably, GGA+U calculations suggest that the antiferromagnetic phase of Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$ may host an axion insulating state. We report the direct measurement of the topological skyrmion energy barrier through a hysteresis of the skyrmion lattice in the chiral magnet MnSi. Measurements were made using small-angle neutron scattering with a custom-built resistive coil to allow for high-precision minor hysteresis loops. The experimental data was analyzed using an adapted Preisach model to quantify the energy barrier for skyrmion formation and corroborated by the minimum-energy path analysis based on atomistic spin simulations. We reveal that the skyrmion lattice in MnSi forms from the conical phase progressively in small domains, each of which consisting of hundreds of skyrmions, and with an activation barrier of several eV., Comment: Final accepted version

UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered unconventional superconductor that has attracted much interest due to its many intriguing properties - a large residual density-of-states in the superconducting state, re-entrant superconductivity in high magnetic fields, and potentially spin-triplet topological superconductivity. Our ac calorimetry, electrical resistivity, and x-ray absorption study of UTe$_2$ under applied pressure reveals key new insights on the superconducting and magnetic states surrounding pressure-induced quantum criticality at P$_{c1}$ = 1.3 GPa. First, our specific heat data at low pressures, combined with a phenomenological model, show that pressure alters the balance between two closely competing superconducting orders. Second, near 1.5 GPa we detect two bulk transitions that trigger changes in the resistivity which are consistent with antiferromagnetic order, rather than ferromagnetism. The presence of both bulk magnetism and superconductivity at pressures above P$_{c2}$ = 1.4 GPa results in a significant temperature difference between resistively and thermodynamically determined transitions into the superconducting state, which indicates a suppression of the superconducting volume fraction by magnetic order. Third, the emergence of magnetism is accompanied by an increase in valence towards a U$^{4+}$ (5f2) state, which indicates that UTe$_2$ exhibits intermediate valence at ambient pressure. At ambient pressure and zero field, tetragonal CeAuSb$_{2}$ hosts stripe antiferromagnetic order at $T_{N} = 6.3$ K. Here we first show via bulk thermodynamic probes and x-ray diffraction measurements that this magnetic order is connected with a structural phase transition to a superstructure which likely breaks $C_{4}$ symmetry, thus signaling nematic order. The temperature-field-pressure phase diagram of CeAuSb$_{2}$ subsequently reveals the emergence of additional ordered states under applied pressure at a multicritical point. Our phenomenological model supports the presence of a vestigial nematic phase in CeAuSb$_{2}$ akin to iron-based high-temperature superconductors; however, superconductivity, if present, remains to be discovered.

Optical conductivity [$\sigma(\omega)$] of CeRhIn$_5$ and YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$ have been measured at external pressures to 10 GPa and at low temperatures to 6 K. Regarding CeRhIn$_5$, at ambient pressure the main feature in $\sigma(\omega)$ is a Drude peak due to free carriers. With increasing pressure, however, a characteristic mid-infrared (mIR) peak rapidly develops in $\sigma(\omega)$, and its peak energy and width increase with pressure. These features are consistent with an increased conduction ($c$)-$f$ electron hybridization at high pressure, and show that the pressure has tuned the electronic state of CeRhIn$_5$ from very weakly to strongly hybridized ones. As for YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$, in contrast, a marked mIR peak is observed already at ambient pressure, indicating a strong $c$-$f$ hybridization. At high pressures, however, the mIR peak shifts to lower energy and becomes diminished, and seems merged with the Drude component at 10 GPa. Namely, CeRhIn$_5$ and YbNi$_3$Ga$_9$ exhibit some opposite tendencies in the pressure evolutions of $\sigma(\omega)$ and electronic structures. The electronic structure of plutonium metal and its compounds pose a grand challenge for a fundamental understanding of the Pu-5$f$ electron character. For 30 years the plutonium chalcogenides have been especially challenging, and multiple theoretical scenarios have been proposed to explain their unusual behavior. We present extensive high-resolution photoemission data on a single crystal of PuTe, which has also been proposed as a topological insulator. The new experimental results on this mixed-valent material provide a constraint to the theoretical modeling and new dynamical mean-field theory calculations agree with the experimental results. The superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional and strongly correlated Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is uniquely held up as a solid state analog to superfluid $^3$He-$A$, with an odd-parity order parameter that also breaks time reversal symmetry, and for which the vector order parameter has the same direction in spin space for all electron momenta. The recent discovery that uniaxial pressure causes a steep rise and maximum in transition temperature ($T_c$) in strained samples motivated the study of $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) that we describe in this article. We present core level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) data of the heavy fermion compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$ measured at the Ce $N_{4,5}$-edges. The higher than dipole transitions in NIXS allow determining the orientation of the $\Gamma_7$ crystal-field ground-state orbital within the unit cell. The crystal-field parameters of the Ce$M$In$_5$ compounds and related substitution phase diagrams have been investigated in great detail in the past; however, whether the ground-state wavefunction is the $\Gamma_7^+$ ($x^2\,-\,y^2$) or $\Gamma_7^-$ ($xy$ orientation) remained undetermined. We show that the $\Gamma_7^-$ doublet with lobes along the (110) direction forms the ground state in CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$. For CeCoIn$_5$, however, we find also some contribution of the first excited state crystal-field state in the ground state due to the stronger hybridization of 4$f$ and conduction electrons, suggesting a smaller $\alpha^2$ value than originally anticipated from x-ray absorption. In the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, we compare simultaneous measurements of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) through two magnetic phase transitions: the high-temperature paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase transition at the N\'eel temperature ($T_N \approx$420~K), and a lower-temperature incommensurate magnetic ordering at $T_1 \approx$270~K. While both the AHE and MOKE are sensitive to the same underlying symmetries of the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spin order, we find that the transition temperatures measured by these two techniques unexpectedly differ by approximately 10~K. Moreover, the applied magnetic field at which the antiferromagnetic order reverses is significantly larger when measured by MOKE than when measured by AHE. We present a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of ${}^{239}$Pu in bulk and powdered single-crystal plutonium tetraboride (PuB$_4$), which has recently been investigated as a potential correlated topological insulator. This study constitutes the second-ever observation of the ${}^{239}$Pu NMR signal, and provides unique on-site sensitivity to the rich $f$-electron physics and insight into the bulk gap-like behavior in PuB$_4$. The ${}^{239}$Pu NMR spectra are consistent with axial symmetry of the shift tensor showing for the first time that ${}^{239}$Pu NMR can be observed in an anisotropic environment and up to room temperature. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{239}$Pu shift, combined with a relatively long spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$), indicate that PuB$_4$ adopts a non-magnetic state with gap-like behavior consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The temperature dependencies of the NMR Knight shift and $T_1^{-1}$--microscopic quantities sensitive only to bulk states--imply bulk gap-like behavior confirming that PuB$_4$ is a good candidate topological insulator. The large contrast between the ${}^{239}$Pu orbital shifts in the ionic insulator PuO$_2$ ($\sim$~+24.7~\%) and PuB$_4$ ($\sim$~-0.5~\%) provides a new tool to investigate the nature of chemical bonding in plutonium materials., Comment: Accepted to PRB Dec. 14, 2018

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements performed on single crystalline \ccag{}, a member of a recently discovered family of heavy fermion materials Ce$_2M$Al$_7$Ge$_4$ ($M$ = Co, Ir, Ni, or Pd). Previous measurements indicated a strong Kondo interaction as well as magnetic order below $T_M = 1.8$ K. Our NMR spectral measurements show that the Knight shift $K$ is proportional to the bulk magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ at high temperatures. A clear Knight shift anomaly ($K \not\propto \chi$) is observed at coherence temperatures $T^* \sim 17.5$ K for $H_0 \parallel \hat{c}$ and 10 K for $H_0 \parallel \hat{a}$ at the ${}^{59}$Co site, and $T^* \sim 12.5$ K at the ${}^{27}$Al(3) site for $H_0 \parallel \hat{a}$ characteristic of the heavy fermion nature of this compound. At high temperatures the ${}^{59}$Co NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ is dominated by spin fluctuations of the 4$f$ local moments with a weak metallic background. The spin fluctuations probed by ${}^{59}$Co NMR are anisotropic and larger in the basal plane than in the $c$ direction. Furthermore, we find $(T_1TK)^{-1} \propto T^{-1/2}$ at the ${}^{59}$Co site as expected for a Kondo system for $T > T^*$ and $T> T_K$. ${}^{59}$Co NQR \slrr{} measurements at low temperatures indicate slowing down of spin fluctuations above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_M \sim 1.8$ K. A weak ferromagnetic character of fluctuations around $\mathbf{q}=0$ is evidenced by an increase of $\chi T$ versus $T$ above the magnetic ordering temperature. We also find good agreement between the observed and calculated electric field gradients at all observed sites.

The effects of uniaxial compressive stress on the normal state $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance properties of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ are reported. The paramagnetic shifts of both planar and apical oxygen sites show pronounced anomalies near the nominal $\mathbf{a}$-axis strain $\varepsilon_{aa}\equiv\varepsilon_v$, that maximizes the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$. The spin susceptibility weakly increases on lowering the temperature below $T$$\simeq$10 K, consistent with an enhanced density of states associated with passing the Fermi energy through a van Hove singularity. Although such a Lifshitz transition occurs in the $\gamma$ band, formed by the Ru $d_{xy}$ states hybridized with in-plane O $p_{\pi}$ orbitals, the large Hund's coupling renormalizes the uniform spin susceptibilty, which, in turn, affects the hyperfine fields of all nuclei. We estimate this \textquotedblleft Stoner\textquotedblright\ renormalization, $S,$ by combining the data with first-principles calculations and conclude that this is an important part of the strain effect, with implications for superconductivity., Comment: 15 pages, 9+6 figures, 0+1 table

CeCo(In$_{0.990}$Hg$_{0.010}$)$_{5}$ is a charge doped variant of the $d$-wave CoCoIn$_{5}$ superconductor with coexistent antiferromagnetic and superconducting transitions occurring at T$_{N}$= 3.4 K and T$_{c}$=1.4 K, respectively. We use neutron diffraction and spectroscopy to show that the magnetic resonant fluctuations present in the parent superconducting phase are replaced by collinear $c$-axis magnetic order with three-dimensional Ising critical fluctuations. No low energy transverse spin fluctuations are observable in this doping-induced antiferromagnetic phase and the dynamic resonant spectral weight predominately shifts to the elastic channel. Thermodynamic and transport properties are reported on single crystals of the hexagonal antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn grown by the Sn flux technique. Magnetization measurements reveal two magnetic phase transitions at $T_1$ = 275 K and $T_2$ = 200 K, below the antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N$ $\approx$ 420 K. The Hall conductivity in zero magnetic field is suppressed dramatically from 4.7 $\Omega^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$ to near zero below $T_1$, coincident with the vanishing of the weak ferromagnetic moment. This illustrates that the large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) arising from the Berry curvature can be switched on and off by a subtle change in the symmetry of the magnetic structure near room temperature.

High magnetic fields induce a pronounced in-plane electronic anisotropy in the tetragonal antiferromagnetic metal CeRhIn$_{5}$ at $H^{*} \gtrsim 30$ T for fields $\simeq 20^{\mathrm{o}}$ off the $c$-axis. Here we investigate the response of the underlying crystal lattice in magnetic fields to $45$ T via high-resolution dilatometry. Within the antiferromagnetic phase of CeRhIn$_{5}$, a finite magnetic field component in the tetragonal $ab$-plane explicitly breaks the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) symmetry of the lattice well below $H^{*}$ revealing a finite nematic susceptibility at low fields. A modest magnetostriction anomaly, $dL/L = -1.8 \times 10^{-6}$, at $H^{*} = 31$ T hence presumably marks the crossover to a fluctuating nematic phase with large electronic nematic susceptibility. Magnetostriction quantum oscillations confirm a Fermi surface change at $H^*$ with the emergence of new orbits. By analyzing the field-induced change in the crystal-field ground state, we conclude that the in-plane Ce $4f$ hybridization is enhanced at $H^*$, carrying the in-plane $f$-electron anisotropy to the Fermi surface. We argue that the nematic behavior observed in this prototypical heavy-fermion material is of electronic origin, and is driven by the hybridization between $4f$ and conduction electrons.

Unusual behavior of quantum materials commonly arises from their effective low-dimensional physics, which reflects the underlying anisotropy in the spin and charge degrees of freedom. Torque magnetometry is a highly sensitive technique to directly quantify the anisotropy in quantum materials, such as the layered high-T$_c$ superconductors, anisotropic quantum spin-liquids, and the surface states of topological insulators. Here we introduce the magnetotropic coefficient $k=\partial^2 F/\partial \theta^2$, the second derivative of the free energy F with respect to the angle $\theta$ between the sample and the applied magnetic field, and report a simple and effective method to experimentally detect it. A sub-$\mu$g crystallite is placed at the tip of a commercially available atomic force microscopy cantilever, and we show that $k$ can be quantitatively inferred from a shift in the resonant frequency under magnetic field. While related to the magnetic torque $\tau=\partial F/\partial \theta$, $k$ takes the role of torque susceptibility, and thus provides distinct insights into anisotropic materials akin to the difference between magnetization and magnetic susceptibility. The thermodynamic coefficient $k$ is discontinuous at second-order phase transitions and subject to Ehrenfest relations with the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. Studying the prototypical ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$ we demonstrate the potential of the Modulated IntEnsity by Zero Effort (MIEZE) technique---a novel neutron spectroscopy method with ultra-high energy resolution of at least 1~$\mu$eV---for the study of quantum matter. We reveal purely longitudinal spin fluctuations in UGe$_2$ with a dual nature arising from $5f$ electrons that are hybridized with the conduction electrons. Local spin fluctuations are perfectly described by the Ising universality class in three dimensions, whereas itinerant spin fluctuations occur over length scales comparable to the superconducting coherence length, showing that MIEZE is able to spectroscopically disentangle the complex low-energy behavior characteristic of quantum materials., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, supplemental materials

We investigate the anisotropic nature of magnetocrystalline coupling between the crystallographic and skyrmion crystal (SKX) lattices in the chiral magnet MnSi by magnetic field-angle resolved resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Abrupt changes are observed in the elastic moduli and attenuation when the magnetic field is parallel to the [011] crystallographic direction. These observations are interpreted in a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory that identifies switching of the SKX orientation to be the result of an anisotropic magnetocrystalline coupling potential. At the interface between two distinct materials desirable properties, such as superconductivity, can be greatly enhanced, or entirely new functionalities may emerge. Similar to in artificially engineered heterostructures, clean functional interfaces alternatively exist in electronically textured bulk materials. Electronic textures emerge spontaneously due to competing atomic-scale interactions, the control of which, would enable a top-down approach for designing tunable intrinsic heterostructures. This is particularly attractive for correlated electron materials, where spontaneous heterostructures strongly affect the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom. Here we report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy on the prototypical strongly-correlated metal CeRhIn5, revealing competition between magnetic frustration and easy-axis anisotropy -- a well-established mechanism for generating spontaneous superstructures. Because the observed easy-axis anisotropy is field-induced and anomalously large, it can be controlled efficiently with small magnetic fields. The resulting field-controlled magnetic superstructure is closely tied to the formation of superconducting and electronic nematic textures in CeRhIn5, suggesting that in-situ tunable heterostructures can be realized in correlated electron materials.

Controlled movement of nano-scale stable magnetic objects has been proposed as the foundation for a new generation of magnetic storage devices. Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like spin textures stabilized by their topology are particularly promising candidates for this technology. Their nanometric size and ability to be displaced in response to an electrical current density several orders of magnitude lower than required to induce motion of magnetic domain walls suggest their potential for high-density memory devices that can be operated at low power. However, to achieve this, skyrmion movement needs to be controlled, where a key question concerns the coupling of skyrmions with the underlying atomic lattice and disorder (pinning). Here, we use Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS), a probe highly sensitive to changes in the elastic properties, to shed new light on skyrmion elasticity and depinning in the archetypal skyrmion material MnSi. In MnSi, skyrmions form a lattice that leads to pronounced changes in the elastic properties of the atomic lattice as a result of magneto-crystalline coupling. Without an applied current, the shear and compressional moduli of the underlying crystal lattice exhibit an abrupt change in the field-temperature range where skyrmions form. For current densities exceeding $j_c^*$ the changes of elastic properties vanish, signaling the decoupling of skyrmion and atomic lattices. Interestingly, $j_c^*$, which we identify as the onset of skyrmion depinning, is about 20 times smaller than $j_c$ previously measured via non-linear Hall effect. Our results suggest the presence of a previously-undetected intermediate dynamic regime possibly dominated by skyrmion-creep motion with important consequences for potential applications., Comment: 7+4 pages, 4+3 figures, 0+1 table

Here we investigate single crystals of CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, microprobe, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and pressure-dependent transport measurements. CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ shares the same structure of CaFe$_{4}$As$_{3}$ with an additional Co atom filling a lattice vacancy and undergoes a magnetic transition at $T_{M} = 16$ K associated with a frustrated magnetic order. CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ displays metallic behavior and its Sommerfeld coefficient ($\gamma = 70$ mJ/mol.K$^{2}$) indicates a moderate enhancement of electron-electron correlations. Transport data under pressures to $2.5$ GPa reveal a suppression of $T_{M}$ at a rate of $-0.008$ K/GPa. First-principle electronic structure calculations show a complex 3D band structure and magnetic moments that depend on the local environment at each Co site. Our results are compared with previous data on CaFe$_{4}$As$_{3}$ and provide a scenario for a magnetically frustrated ground state in this family of compounds.

The Kondo-lattice compound CeRhIn$_5$ displays a field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*\approx30$ T, which occurs within the antiferromagnetic state, prior to the quantum critical point at $B_{c0}\approx50$ T. Here, in order to investigate the nature of the Fermi surface change, we measured the magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetic torque of CeRhIn$_5$ across a wide range of magnetic fields. Our observations uncover the field-induced itineracy of the $4f$ electrons, where above $B_{\rm onset}\approx17$ T there is a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and spin-dependent effective cyclotron masses determined from quantum oscillations. Upon crossing $B_{\rm onset}$, the temperature dependence of the specific heat also shows distinctly different behavior from that at low fields. Our results indicate that the Kondo coupling is remarkably robust upon increasing the magnetic field. We present linear polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of Cd and Sn doped CeCoIn$_5$. The 4$f$ ground state wave functions have been determined for their superconducting, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ground states. The absence of changes in the wave functions in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ suggests the 4$f$\,--\,conduction electron ($cf$) hybridization is not affected by globally Cd doping, thus supporting the interpretation of magnetic droplets nucleating long range magnetic order. This is contrasted by changes in the wave function due to Sn substitution. Increasing Sn in CeCo(In$_{1-y}$Sn$_y$)$_5$ compresses the 4$f$ orbitals into the tetragonal plane of these materials, suggesting enhanced $cf$ hybridization with the in-plane In(1) atoms and a homogeneous altering of the electronic structure. As these experiments show, the 4$f$ wave functions are a very sensitive probe of small changes in the hybridization of 4$f$ and conduction electrons, even conveying information about direction dependencies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Resonant elastic X-ray scattering is a powerful technique for measuring multipolar order parameters. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally study the possibility of using this technique to detect the proposed multipolar order parameters in URu$_2$Si$_2$ at the U-$L_{3}$ edge with the electric quadrupolar transition. Based on an atomic model, we calculate the azimuthal dependence of the quadrupolar transition at the U-$L_{3}$ edge. The results illustrate the potential of this technique for distinguishing different multipolar order parameters. We then perform experiments on ultra-clean single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_2$ at the U-$L_{3}$ edge to search for the predicted signal, but do not detect any indications of multipolar moments within the experimental uncertainty. We theoretically estimate the orders of magnitude of the cross-section and the expected count rate of the quadrupolar transition and compare them to the dipolar transitions at the U-$M_4$ and U-$L_3$ edges, clarifying the difficulty in detecting higher order multipolar order parameters in URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the current experimental setup., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in PRB

We have carried out high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the Cebased heavy fermion compound CePt2In7 that exhibits stronger two-dimensional character than the prototypical heavy fermion system CeCoIn5. Multiple Fermi surface sheets and a complex band structure are clearly resolved. We have also performed detailed band structure calculations on CePt2In7. The good agreement found between our measurements and the calculations suggests that the band renormalization effect is rather weak in CePt2In7. A comparison of the common features of the electronic structure of CePt2In7 and CeCoIn5 indicates that CeCoIn5 shows a much stronger band renormalization effect than CePt2In7. Electronic nematics are exotic states of matter where electronic interactions break a rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice, in analogy to the directional alignment without translational order in nematic liquid crystals. Intriguingly such phases appear in the copper- and iron-based superconductors, and their role in establishing high-temperature superconductivity remains an open question. Nematicity may take an active part, cooperating or competing with superconductivity, or may appear accidentally in such systems. Here we present experimental evidence for a phase of nematic character in the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn5. We observe a field-induced breaking of the electronic tetragonal symmetry of in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum phase transition at Hc~50T. This phase appears in out-of-plane fields of H*~28T and is characterized by substantial in-plane resistivity anisotropy. The anisotropy can be aligned by a small in-plane field component, with no apparent connection to the underlying crystal structure. Furthermore no anomalies are observed in the magnetic torque, suggesting the absence of metamagnetic transitions in this field range. These observations are indicative of an electronic nematic character of the high field state in CeRhIn5. The appearance of nematic behavior in a phenotypical heavy fermion superconductor highlights the interrelation of nematicity and unconventional superconductivity, suggesting nematicity to be a commonality in such materials.
