Abstract

Based on assumptions of the Job Demands-Resources model, we investigated employees' willingness to use prescription drugs such as methylphenidate and modafinil for nonmedical purposes to enhance their cognitive functioning as a response to strain (i.e., perceived stress) that is induced by job demands (e.g., overtime, emotional demands, shift work, leadership responsibility). We also examined the direct and moderating effects of resources (e.g., emotional stability, social and instrumental social support) in this process. We utilized data from a representative survey of employees in Germany (N = 6454) encompassing various job demands and resources, levels of perceived stress, and willingness to use nonmedical drugs for performance enhancement purposes. By using Structural Equation Models, we found that job demands (such as overtime and emotional demands) and a scarcity of resources (such as emotional stability) increased strain, consequently directly and indirectly increasing the willingness to use prescription drugs for cognitive enhancement. Moreover, emotional stability reduced the effect of certain demands on strain. 2. Technology, Tasks and Training -- Evidence on the Provision of Employer-Provided Training in Times of Technological Change in Germany

Abstract

In the context of technological change and the ongoing transformation of the labour market, this paper investigates firms' employer-provided continuing training provision for employees with different skill requirements. Following human capital theory, firms invest in training when expecting higher returns than costs. From a theoretical point of view, only investment in employees in high-skilled jobs is reasonable. Empirically, this is not always the case. Using firm-level data from the BIBB Establishment Panel on Training and Competence Development, a fractional logit model is applied to answer which role technology use and task profiles play in employees' training participation. The results suggest that firms with a higher proportion of digital technology users provide more training. On the contrary, more working time spent with digital technologies is associated with less training. A potential explanation could be that after initial training in using digital technologies, there are substantial learning effects and employees become more experienced. Additionally, employees who more frequently perform complex tasks receive more training independent of their jobs' general skill requirements.

Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students' scientific literacies (i.e. students' understanding of open research, consumption of science and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration and engagement in open research) and (iii) students' attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship.

7. Investment in Human Capital: Company expenditures on continuing vocational training in times of technological change in Germany

Abstract

Context: The scientific and political discourse often acclaims continuing training as the key for adapting to today's changes in the labour market, caused – among others– by technological change. However, changed skill demand and increased continuing training participation does not necessarily translate into increased investment in human capital by employers, especially for already disadvantaged skill groups. Therefore, this analysis focusses on the relation between companies’ investment in human capital, technological change indicators and companies’ skill structure. Methods: We use quantitative data from the 2020 wave of a representative establishment survey for Germany to estimate ordinary least square regressions. Results: The results show that the investment in technology and the technology level positively relate to investment in human capital. However, the an above average share of low-skilled employees is negatively associated with a companies’ human capital investment. Conclusion: Investment in technology and the technology level do lead to an increase in human capital investment. Still, the skill structure in a company is important for determining whether companies invest in the human capital of their employees. Combined with the fact that most training is financed by the employer, increased investment by companies in times of technological change could lead to increased or persistent barriers to continuing training for already disadvantaged groups. Therefore, further research in this area is needed. These findings provide a good starting point for policies aimed at reducing these barriers and increasing human capital investment for disadvantaged groups.

Abstract

With the seventh edition of the publication manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), the APA style now prescribes bias‐free language and encourages accessibility even to non‐academic audiences. However, even with the newest guidelines, the way we credit authors in psychology remains anachronistic, intransparent, and prone to conflict. It still relies on a sequence‐determines‐credit approach in the byline, which concurrently is contradicted by the option to consider the last author as the position of the principal investigator depending on the field or journal. Scholars from various disciplines have argued that relying on such norms introduces a considerable amount of error when stakeholders rely on articles for career‐relevant decisions. Given the existing recommendations towards a credit‐based system, ignoring those issues will further promote bias that could be avoided with rather minor changes to the way we perceive authorship. In this article, we introduce a set of easy‐to‐implement changes to the manuscript layout that value contribution rather than position. Aimed at fostering transparency, accountability, and equality between authors, establishing those changes would likely benefit all stakeholders in contemporary psychological science. 14. How cognitive abilities and self-control affect the relationship between shift work and health behavior: a moderation analysis

Previous work suggests that there is a link between shift work and health. Furthermore, shift work is assumed to affect health outcomes via the effect of health behavior. As the findings regarding the relationship between shift work and health-related behavior patterns are inconsistent and limited, the present study will examine this link with regard to potential moderators (namely, fluid intelligence, socio-economic status, and self-control) in a German sample. Subsequently, we will investigate the relationship between actual health behavior and subjective health. Due to diverging findings for men and women that are frequently found, we will analyze the data separately for the sexes.

Abstract

This case study is based on experiences with an international meta-scientific project across different fields of research, assessing the use of Open Science practices in these fields, as well as individual researchers’ reasons for not engaging in Open Science practices. The project was conducted by a cross-cultural and diverse group of researchers. In the present article, we share insights into potential pitfalls when conducting an international study, as well as possible solutions to overcome them. Specifically, we highlight various issues focusing on two key phases: designing an online survey with a focus on cross-cultural data collection, and recruiting a cross-cultural online sample of researchers.

Abstract

Büroberufe sind und waren mit technischen Neuerungen konfrontiert. Viele Aufgaben in diesen Berufen gelten als "programmierbar" und werden deshalb als ersetzbar angesehen. Dennoch gibt es kaum Forschung dazu oder zum Umgang Bürobeschäftigter mit dem technischen Wandel. Diese Lücke schließt die vorliegende Studie. Mit quantitativen und qualitativen Daten und einem Mixed-Methods-Ansatz untersucht sie den Umgang von Beschäftigten, Betrieben und dem Ausbildungssystem mit technischen Neuerungen seit den 1980er-Jahren. Es zeigt sich, dass Bürobeschäftigte durch ihr Arbeitsvermögen gerüstet sind, den technischen Wandel zu tragen und zu gestalten. Die beruflichen Qualifikationen von Bürobeschäftigten tragen erheblich zur Bildung der entsprechenden Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse bei und die dualen Ausbildungen in den verschiedenen Büroberufen sind für die Gestaltung der laufenden Neuerungsprozesse durch technische Veränderungen gut aufgestellt.

Abstract

In social sciences, longitudinal studies represent a common form of study design. However, this form of data collection may face the special problem of panel attrition over subsequent waves – a circumstance that can lead to a biased sample. As a consequence, longitudinal analyses may become flawed if the bias is unknown or not corrected. Previous research on panel attrition revealed that dropout can be related to several specific characteristics, such as sex, personality, or relationship status of the participants. As twins are a core feature of twin-studies – twin similarity a key tool in behavioral genetics – relational characteristics of this special siblinghood may play a crucial role in re-participating, too. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate panel attrition with respect to certain personality traits (Big Five) and relational characteristics (sibling relationship and satisfaction with sibling relationship) to estimate potential biases as a basis for corrections in future studies. Analyses were not only performed on an individual level but also regarding twin pair resemblance as this is the main source of information in behavior genetic twin studies. The sample consisted of 4,097 twin pairs and 8,281 of their family members from wave one of the German TwinLife study. 60.9 % of the initial sample re-participated in wave 2. Results indicate that there are no consistent patterns in personality or relational characteristics across family members, age cohorts of the twins, and sexes regarding panel attrition. There also seem to be no consistent patterns regarding differences in twin similarity across re- and non-re-participators. Subsequently, selective panel dropout with respect to personal characteristics seems to be of minor importance in the TwinLife study and corrections may only be necessary in selective cases.

Open scholarship has transformed research, and introduced a host of new terms in the lexicon of researchers. The ‘Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Teaching’ (FORRT) community presents a crowdsourced glossary of open scholarship terms to facilitate education and effective communication between experts and newcomers.

Based on assumptions of the Job Demands-Resources model, we investigated employees' willingness to use prescription drugs such as methylphenidate and modafinil for nonmedical purposes to enhance their cognitive functioning as a response to strain (i.e., perceived stress) that is induced by job demands (e.g., overtime, emotional demands, shift work, leadership responsibility). We also examined the direct and moderating effects of resources (e.g., emotional stability, social and instrumental social support) in this process. We utilized data from a representative survey of employees in Germany (N = 6454) encompassing various job demands and resources, levels of perceived stress, and willingness to use nonmedical drugs for performance enhancement purposes. By using Structural Equation Models, we found that job demands (such as overtime and emotional demands) and a scarcity of resources (such as emotional stability) increased strain, consequently directly and indirectly increasing the willingness to use prescription drugs for cognitive enhancement. Moreover, emotional stability reduced the effect of certain demands on strain. These results delivered new insights into mechanisms behind nonmedical prescription drug use that can be used to prevent such behaviour and potential negative health consequences.

Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students’ scientific literacies (i.e. students’ understanding of open research, consumption of science and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration and engagement in open research) and (iii) students’ attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship.

Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students' scientific literacies (i.e. students' understanding of open research, consumption of science and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration and engagement in open research) and (iii) students' attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice.
