The dynamic technological characteristics and diverse cultural potential of iron make it one of the most influential materials for facilitating cultural transformation. Reconstructing how iron was managed is an important way to understand political and socioeconomic issues in pre-modern state-level societies. In contrast to studies of smelting sites, the study of iron objects allows us to evaluate trends of production in relation to practice of consumption. By investigating a given class of iron objects, it is possible to document shifts in technical processes, cultural choices, and social organisation that are representative of a state or polities broader iron economy. This study outlines the use of comprehensive archaeometallurgical typology, a new approach combining technological, chronological, and “sourcing” analyses of iron architectural crampons from the Khmer capital of Angkor (ninth to fifteenth c. CE) in Cambodia. Our methodology was implemented on 69 iron crampons from three masonry complexes (the Royal Palace, Baphuon, and Preah Khan) spanning the tenth to thirteenth centuries. Compiling a vast and statistically significant data set enables us to identify diachronic changes of production and manufacturing patterns that seem to be linked to key periods of expansion of the Khmer Empire. In the early days of iron metallurgy in Western Europe, the most widespread type of ‘trade iron’ (semi‐product) was bipyramidal in shape. Although they are frequently found, little is known about how they were manufactured and circulated, or even about their age. An interdisciplinary approach was applied to the Durrenentzen deposit (Haut‐Rhin, France), the third‐largest in Europe in terms of artefact quantities, in an attempt to reconstruct the technological, social and economic context that caused them to be abandoned. A morphometric study of the 51 iron bars revealed a high degree of homogeneity, despite variations in detail. Four objects were selected for archaeometric studies. Metallographic analyses show internal differences (quality of the material, nature of the alloys and manufacturing techniques). Chemical analyses also showed different provenances. Finally, radiocarbon analyses of the carbon in steel (iron/carbon alloy) linked this deposit to the early Iron Age. This study provided the first benchmark for more general research, significantly changing perceptions of the economics of iron at the beginning of the Iron Age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper develops new reflections regarding the provenance of iron artefacts, by defining the trade networks that might have supplied the building yard of the Metz city belfry at the end of the 15th century. Regional field surveys were carried out in Lorraine in order to constitute a chemical repository, including ironmaking zones considered as the most probable metal providers. The chemical characterization-both major and trace elements-of slag inclusions entrapped in the metallic matrix of iron reinforcements was performed in order to compare their chemical signature to the reference set. A statistical approach based on the combined use of descriptive multivariate analyses was developed to infer the origin of the metal supplied to the building yard. As the multiplicity of potential metal providers was assessed from former studies, the results obtained underline the place taken by local workshops in the supply strategy developed by the builders. Underwater surveys along the Israeli Carmel coast have revealed six cargoes of iron semi-products associated with shipwrecks. They are described and dated according to the associated artefacts. Metallographic and chemical analyses on samples from the biggest cargo have determined the stages of the chaîne opératoire, identified the properties of the iron and characterized the iron trade along the Israeli coast. The new discoveries contribute to our understanding of the circulation of iron in the South Levant, which was characterized by an almost complete absence of local iron production. During the Byzantine and Crusader periods, this absence was compensated by long-distance sea trade, depending on political circumstances and restrictions. Three main types of iron semi-products were identified: (a) partly consolidated blooms, (b) short pointed bars and (c) elongated pointed bars. The cargoes discovered represent a time period of nearly a millennium. Altogether, 148 iron semi-products were studied. Of these, 166 were from cargo a, which was dated by coins to around 1130-1200 ce. Those coins could have been imported from Europe for Crusader military and civil uses in the Levant. The iron from cargoes b, d and f, dated perhaps to the Byzantine period, could have been imported from Anatolia or Venice for military and civil purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from the second century BC, with the fast expansion of the Roman Empire, iron production and consumption developed exponentially in north-western Europe. This rapid growth naturally led to an increase in trade, that still remains to be studied encompassing a broad scope, so as to not neglect long-distance exchanges. This is today possible by taking advantage of the progress made in the past 40 years in archaeology and archaeometallurgy. Cargoes of iron bars recovered from a group of 23 wrecks located off the coast of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), opposite an old branch of the Rhône River, constitute a rich opportunity to examine this trade, by comparing the slag inclusions trapped in iron bars to primary slag from the six main ironmaking areas in Gaul. Based on a trace element analysis of these inclusions and this slag, we suggest that ships travelled down the Rhône carrying iron produced in Wallonia (Belgium), while others sailed up the Rhône transporting iron produced in Montagne Noire (Aude, France)., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.
