Abstract

A short overview about the potential of polarized beams at future colliders is given. In particular the baseline design for polarized beams at the ILC is presented and the physics case for polarized $e^-$ and $e^+$ is discussed. In order to fulfil the precision requirements spin tracking from the source to the interaction point is needed. Abstract

The eight coils making the Barrel Toroid and the Central Solenoid are tested in their final underground location and the cool-down to 4.5 K of both End Caps is scheduled to start in October 2007. Once the test is completed, the cool-down of the complete ATLAS magnet system is carried out and is scheduled for spring 2008 to be ready for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) start-up in May 2008.

Abstract

An Aluminium stabilized, thin superconducting solenoid is required for the central field of 1.5 T for the BABAR detector. The winding is supported by an Aluminium alloy outer cylinder, which provides hoop strength to the coil. The coil has dimensions of 3 m in diameter and 3.7 m in length. The current density is graded to meet the field uniformity requirements of [+ or -] 2%. A hexagonal flux return, comprised of a barrel and two end doors provides the external flux path for the field. Additional material is required in the end capsto shield the flux from the beam line magnets. To accommodate the muon detectors, the barrel and end caps are segmented into 20 plates of different thickness. Special attention is given to the support of the coil and cryostat to account for seismic loading. The coil is indirectly cooled to 4.5K using the liquid helium thermo-siphon technique and cooling channels welded to the support cylinder. Automatic cooldown and cryogen supply to the coil and its 40K radiation shield is done by a helium liquefier/refrigerator via coaxial, return gas screened, flexible transfer lines.

Abstract

The characterization of a model corrector magnet for the large hadron collider (LHC) was conducted at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research. The 1.3-m prototype consists of a 1.5-T dipole and a sextupole with a strength of 8000 T/m2. The former corrects the orbit during operation while the latter is used for chromaticity adjustments. Built for operation inside the LHC quadrupole's cryostat, the corrector magnet coils were tested at 4.2 K and 1.8 K, the normal operating temperature.

Abstract

3 pp. (2006)., Polarized $e^+$ and $e^-$ beams are foreseen for the future International Linear Collider (ILC) whose final basic de- sign considerations are currently under discussion. High precision physics requires the polarization of both beams to be known with a relative uncertainty of about 0.5% or bet- ter. Therefore all possible depolarizing effects that could operate between the polarized sources and the interaction regions have to be under full control.The ‘heLiCal’ collaboration aims to provide a full ‘cradle-to-grave’ analysis of all depolarizing effects at the ILC. This report gives a brief summary of ongoing work on the ILC spin-dynamics concentrating on recent results for depolarizing effects in the ILC damping rings, beam delivery system and beam-beam interactions. The effects during the beam-beam interactions have been evaluated for a range of ILC parameter sets.

The ILC positron source relies upon a ~200 m long superconducting helical undulator in order to generate the huge flux of gamma photons required. The period is only 11.5 mm but the field strength is ~1 T. The UK is building and testing a full scale 4 m long ILC cryomodule at the moment. It will be completed in 2008 and the results used to demonstrate the feasibility of the full (200 m long) system

Abstract

A number of photon collimators are placed inside the helical undulator to protect the cold surfaces of the vacuum vessel from being hit by the photons and thus achieving the baseline pressure requirement. Computer simulations were run in order to determine the energy deposition and instantaneous temperature rise in these collimators and various material candidates were studied. This paper presents the status of the simulation.

Abstract

The positron source for the International Linear Collider (ILC) is dependent upon a ~200 m long helical undulator to generate a high flux of multi-MeV photons. The undulator system is broken down into a series of 4 m cryomodules, which each contain two superconducting helical undulators. Following a dedicated R&D phase and the construction and measurement of a number of short prototypes a full scale cryomodule has now been manufactured for the first time. This paper reports on the design, manufacture, and test results of this cryomodule.

Abstract

The clean environment of a lepton linear collider allows high-precision measurements for physics analyses. In order to exploit this potential, precise knowledge about the polarization state of the beams is also required. In this paper we concentrate on depolarization effects caused by the intense beam.beam interaction, which is expected to be the dominant source of depolarization. Higher-order effects, as well as critical analyses of the theoretical assumptions used in the past and theoretical improvements in the derivation of suitable equations, are given. Updates on existing simulation programs are reported. Numerical results for the design of the International Linear Collider (ILC) are discussed

Abstract

The baseline design of the positron source for the International Linear Collider (ILC) incorporates a helical undulator and pair-production target in order to generate the unprecedented quantities of positrons required to sustain the intended ILC physics programme. This configuration is challenging but readily achievable by using novel adaptations of existing technologies to avoid problems inherent in conventional positron sources in which the stresses in the target(s) and activation of the target station are both serious problems. In addition, a highly polarized positron beam, essential for realizing the full potential of the ILC, can be produced by a simple upgrade to the baseline design. A major contribution to the international design effort is being led by the UK-based HeLiCal collaboration. The collaboration is responsible for the design and prototyping of the helical undulator itself, which is a short period device with a small aperture, and also leads development of the start to end simulations of the polarised particles to ensure that high levels of polarization are maintained from the sources, through the beam transport systems and up to the interaction point(s). Members of the collaboration are also involved in the EUROTeV-funded research programme to produce a design for a pair-production target which can operate reliably in the high photon flux of the undulator. This paper will provide an update on the work of the collaboration, focusing on the design, construction and testing of components of the polarized positron source, and will also discuss future plans.

Abstract

The paper describes the test results of the helium cryoplant for the superconducting magnets of the ATLAS particle detector at CERN. It consists of two refrigerators used in common by all the magnets and of two proximity cryogenic systems (PCS) interfacing respectively the toroids and the central solenoid. Emphasis is given to the commissioning of the refrigerators: the main unit of 6 kW equivalent capacity at 4.5 K and the thermal shield refrigerator providing 20 kW between 40 K and 80 K. The first unit is used for refrigeration at 4.5 K and for the cooling of three sets of 20 kA current leads, while the second one provides, in addition to the 20 kW refrigeration of the thermal shields, 60 kW for the cool-down to 100 K of the 660 ton cold mass of the magnets. The tests, carried out with the equipment in the final underground configuration, are extended to the PCS that includes the large liquid helium centrifugal pumps (each providing 1.2 kg/s) for forced-flow cooling of the magnets and the complex distribution system needed to fulfill their different operating requirements. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This report describes a design for focusing solenoids for the low beta sections for the proposed Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). There are three focusing solenoid pairs that will be around the muon absorbers for MICE. The two solenoid coils have an inside diameter of 510 mm, a length of 180 mm, and a thickness of 100 mm. A distance of 260 mm separates the two coils in the pair. The coils are designed to operate at opposite polarity, in order to create a gradient field in the low beta sections of the MICE cooling channel. As result, the force pushing the coil pair apart approaches 270 metric tons when the coils operate close to the short sample current for the superconductor. The forces between the coils will be carried by a support structure that is both on the inside and the outside the coils. During some modes of operation for MICE, the coils may operate at the same polarity, which means that the force between the coils pushes them together. The focusing magnet must be designed for both modes of operation. Abstract

ATLAS is a very high-energy detector for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The superconducting magnet used to provide the required magnetic field consists of four sub-systems: a central solenoid and a very large toroidal magnet comprising two end-cap magnets and the barrel toroid magnet. The associated cryogenic system, currently in the final specification and procurement phase has been sub-divided into three parts: internal, proximity and external. The internal cryogenics minimizes and extracts the heat loads to/from the 4.5 K cold mass and its thermal shields, while the proximity cryogenics takes the cooling capacity generated by the external common system and distributes it to the four magnets according to the various operating scenarios. Two independent proximity cryogenic systems have been designed taking into account the difference in cooling principle of the solenoid and the three toroids, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

4 pp. (2006)., A positron source utilising undulators is defined as the baseline option for the International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC requires a short period undulator, as close to 10mm as possible, that is capable of producing 10 MeV photons. The HeLiCal collaboration within the UK has undertaken a programme to design, develop and produce a prototype undulator. Part of the programme is to perform a magnetic design of the prototype using FEA modelling. The modelling has addressed several issues including the effect of magnetic material for the undulator former, optimal winding geometry, the magnetic flux inside the superconductor and its variation with undulator period and the winding bore. This paper summarizes the results of both the 2d and the 3d magnetic simulations.
