This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples. Publisher PDF

This study was conducted to investigate adipokine [Apelin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)] and cardiac troponin (cTnI) response that emerged after adding an essential oil mixture (EOM) (Eucalytus glabutus labii, Thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon nardus, and Syzygium aromaticum) at different rates to the drinking water of broilers in which thyroid dysfunction (hypo-and hyperthyroidism) had been experimentally induced. In the present study, 150 1-day-old Ross-308 male broiler chicks were used. They were divided into five groups, each with 30 animals. The groups were designed to include five subgroups: control (C), hypothyroid, hypothyroid + 250 ppm EOM, hyperthyroid, and hyperthyroid + 250 ppm EOM, with six animals in each group. At the end of the experiment, Apelin, p-BDNF, cTnI, T3, T4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were investigated in blood serum samples obtained by cervical dislocation from four randomly selected animals from each subgroup, making 100 animals in total. It was found that EOM administration resulted in a dose-dependent increase in p-BDNF and apelin levels, and a decrease in T4 levels in the experimentally induced hypo-and hyper-thyroidism groups, but did not affect T3 and cTnI levels. Conversely, an increase in TSH level was observed in the hypothyroidism groups, whereas a decrease was observed in groups with hyperthyroidism. Today's best solution in compensating for sensorineural hearing loss is the cochlear implant, which electrically stimulates the spiral ganglion neurons in the inner ear. An optimum hearing impression is not ensured due to, among other reasons, a remaining anatomical gap between the spiral ganglion neurons and the implant electrodes. The gap could be bridged via pharmacologically triggered neurite growth toward the electrodes if biomaterials for neurite guidance could be provided. For this, we investigated the suitability of decellularized tissue. We compared three different layers (tunica adventitia, tunica media, and tunica intima) of decellularized equine carotid arteries in a preliminary approach. Rat spiral ganglia explants were cultured on decellularized equine carotid artery layers and neurite sprouting was assessed quantitatively. Generally, neurite outgrowth was possible and it was most prominent on the intima (in average 83 neurites per spiral ganglia explants, followed by the adventitia (62 neurites) and the lowest growth on the media (20 neurites). Thus, decellularized equine carotid arteries showed promising effects on neurite regeneration and can be developed further as efficient biomaterials for neural implants in hearing research.

In this paper, we propose a cloud-based, scalable architecture for connected vehicle risk detection and life time estimation solution. Our conceptual solution collects real-time data from the vehicle itself by using mobile devices and from vehicle to vehicle (V2V) data generated by the cars in the traffic. OpenXC is the vehicle interface which enables a wide-range of real-time data collection from several points of the vehicle. With the help of a mobile device in the car V2V data can be obtained from the nearby vehicles such as approaching ambulance, motorcycle, sensor on the road etc. In the initial scope, we would to prevent accidents in the traffic. Accidents happen due to many situations in the traffic such as bad road conditions, broken vehicle parts, and poor driving habits. OpenXC and V2V data can be further merged, utilized in learning and prediction by using deep learning algorithms to detect early warnings to prevent accidents. By integrating further data systems such as weather conditions, vehicle service center logbooks and car manufacturers' repositories. Such additional data can be added to make stronger predictions for accidents and can further provide life time estimation of vehicle parts as a further benefit. © 2019 CEUR Workshop Proceedings.All Rights Reserved. Yeni katılımcı mekanizmalara yönelik olarak Türkiye solunun kategorik bir muhalefeti değilse bile bir ilgisizliği gözleniyor. Muğlak bir yönetişim başlığı altında yeni liberalizmin kılık değiştirmiş halleri olarak algılanan bu yeni siyasal mecra ve uygulamaların demokratik potansiyeli topyekün görmezden geliniyor. Bu makalede öncelikle bu katılımcı yeniliklerin, demokratik potansiyelleri hakkında kategorik bir genelleme yapmaya izin vermeyecek ölçüde geniş bir yelpazeye yayıldıklarını ortaya koyacağız. Daha sonra, bunlara ilişkin olarak tehlikeli ve temelsiz bir idealizasyona engel olmak amacıyla, bu araçların karşı karşıya oldukları zorlukları ve zayıflıkları tartışacağız. Sonuçta, bu yeni mekanizmaların demokratik potansiyellerinin, Türk solu adına tümden görmezden gelinemeyecek kadar önemli olduğunu savunacağız., A general indifference if not a categorical opposition to the new participatory mechanisms is observed within the Turkish left. Considering them as disguised forms of neo-liberalism under a generic title of governance, the democratic potential of these new political spheres and practices has been wholly neglected. In this paper, we shall first present different forms of recent participatory innovations to argue that the spectrum of these mechanisms is too large to let a standard generalisation about their democratic impact. We shall then discuss the challenges that they face to draw a realistic portrait with the objective of avoiding a dangerous and ungrounded idealisation of these instruments. To conclude, we shall argue that their democratic potential is nevertheless too important to be wholly neglected for the Turkish left.

Since 2004, the government of Turkey has undertaken a number of "decentralisation" reforms. A number of laws have been passed that give increased autonomy and resources to regional and local authorities and aim to reorganise the division of tasks and the relationships between these authorities and the central government. These reforms represent substantial change, since there had previously been practically no intermediate level between the central government and the citizens, and the decision-making centres in Ankara constituted serious bottlenecks that were regularly circumvented. The reform process raises a number of questions. What rationales led to the implementation of these reforms? Did the reforms result from the opening of negotiations on Turkey's accession to the European Union, in 2005, or were domestic political processes also a factor? What real changes did these reforms introduce? What impact have they had on adjustments in the levels of government and the connections among them, and, more generally, on the Turkish political scene?

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma is the most common orbital tumour. We conducted a retrospective analysis to examine: (i) the impact of initial presentation and staging on outcome and (ii) response to various treatment modalities and the effect of the latter on recurrence. Ninety patients with primary ocular adnexal marginal zone lymphoma (POAML) diagnosed at our institution between 1984 and 2009 were studied. POAML was associated with monoclonal gammopathy (13%) at presentation. Most POAML patients (86%) presented with Ann-Arbor stage I disease. Radiotherapy led to excellent local control, but relapses occurred in 18% of Ann-Arbor stage I patients during a median follow-up of 5 years. Local relapses, including secondary central nervous system (CNS) involvement, were observed in patients receiving radiation doses30·6 Gy. No differences in relapse rate and survival were observed between patients who did or did not undergo staging bone marrow biopsy. Ann-Arbor stage II-IV disease and high lactate dehydrogenase levels were associated with shorter freedom from progression. In conclusion, POAML is an indolent lymphoma with continuous risk for relapse. Radiation doses of at least 30·6 Gy should be given in Ann-Arbor stage I disease, since lower doses may be more frequently associated with relapses, including CNS relapses.

Within Turkish political science literature, local democracy has been mainly perceived as an administrative issue defined in the narrow framework of administrative and financial autonomy and simplified in a general dichotomy with the central government. Yet, since the eighties, Turkish municipal framework has undergone very significant administrative, financial and functional changes, albeit without bringing about a veritable democratisation of local politics. As a matter of fact, the popular understanding of local democracy in Turkey does not really deal with infra-local democratic issues such as the problems of power distribution, of political representation and participation. Thus, a different understanding of local democracy beyond dimensions of administrative tutelage, financial resources and functional limits is required. Departing from this observation, I argue that a new conceptualisation of local democracy including more political elements is required to understand the contemporary state of Turkish local politics. This paper intends to be a preliminary step for reaching such a new understanding of local democracy for the Turkish context.

Un point de vue assez largement répandu dans les opinions publiques et les médias occidentaux affirme l'incapacité des sociétés musulmanes d'entrer dans la modernité et, notamment, d'acclimater en leur sein la sécularité et la démocratie, qui en sont des caractéristiques majeures. La notion de sécularité et les processus de sécularisation ont été privilégiés ici par rapport au concept de laïcité. Il s'agit moins de discuter des manières dont les institutions et les acteurs politiques et étatiques ­ partis, gouvernements, appareils d'Etat ­ fonctionnent dans ces pays, mais plutôt d'y identifier, dans l'espace public et l'espace privé et aux plans individuel et collectif, les discours, les idées et les comportements, qui peuvent être interprétés comme des signes, des indicateurs de processus de sécularisation et de démocratisation et leur impact sur les institutions politiques et étatiques

WOS: 000220885200012 PubMed: 15119684 Objective: This report evaluates the use of pedicled buccal fat pad for closure of oroantral communications. Method and materials: Seventy-five patients were treated with pedicled buccal fat pad. Fifty-two were treated immediately after tooth extractions. The remaining 23 had chronic oroantral communication and were treated similarly after irrigation of the maxillary sinus with saline for 7 days. Results: The 6-month follow-up revealed uneventful healing in all of the patients. Though partial necrosis of the flap was observed in three patients, this did not effect the final healing. Total necrosis of the flap was not noted. Conclusion: The use of pedicled buccal fat pad is an acceptable and reliable alternative in acute or chronic oroantral communications management and may even be used as a first treatment choice by experienced surgeons.
