1. Dry grasslands and thorn-cushion communities of Armenia: a first syntaxonomic classification

Abstract: Aim: To provide the first syntaxonomic, plot-based classification of the dry grasslands and thorn-cushion communities in Armenia. Study area: Armenia. Methods: We sampled 111 vegetation plots (10 m2) and recorded environmental and structural parameters. We collected additional 487 relevés from surrounding countries for a broad-scale comparison. We used modified TWINSPAN to derive a syntaxonomic classification system, whose units were then compared among each other regarding species composition, structure, site conditions and distribution. Results: The classification of Armenian vegetation plots resulted in a 12-cluster solution. Unsupervised classification of the broad-scale dataset yielded five main groups, which were used for the high-level syntaxonomic assignments of the Armenian data. We assigned about half of the plots of the Armenian dataset to the Festuco-Brometea, while the remaining represented a potential new class, preliminarily called “Ziziphora tenuior-Stipa arabica grasslands”. Most of the syntaxa below class level are new to science, therefore we provide formal descriptions of three orders (Plantagini atratae-Bromopsietalia variegatae, Onobrychido transcaucasicae-Stipetalia pulcherrimae, Cousinio brachypterae-Stipetalia arabicae), four alliances (Acantholimono caryophyllacei-Stipion holosericeae, Artemision fragrantis, Onobrychido michauxii-Stipion capillatae, Onobrychido transcaucasicae-Stipion pulcherrimae) and six associations. We found significant differences in the topographic, climatic and soil characteristics, and structural parameters, species life forms and distribution range types between the grassland types at different syntaxonomic levels. The mean species richness was 47.3 (vascular plants: 46.8, bryophytes: 0.4, lichens: 0.1). Conclusions: We found remarkable differences of the Armenian dry grasslands from the previously known units and described most of the higher syntaxa and all the associations as new to science. Our study provides arguments for a potential new class of Ziziphora tenuior-Stipa arabica grasslands separate both from the Euro-Siberian Festuco-Brometea and the Anatolian Astragalo-Brometea. Finally, we found plot scale richness of vascular plants clearly above the Palaearctic average of dry grasslands and that of non-vascular plants clearly below, which calls for further biodiversity analyses. Taxonomic reference: Euro+Med (2023) for vascular plants, Hodgetts et al. (2020) for bryophytes, Nimis et al. (2018) for lichens except for Xanthoparmelia camtschadalis (Ach.) Hale. 2. Incomplete degradation of lichen usnic acid and atranorin in Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus)

Abstract: Previous studies of Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway indicate that their rumen microbiota play a key role in degrading lichen secondary metabolites. We investigated the presence of usnic acid and atranorin in faecal samples from Svalbard reindeer (R. tarandus platyrhynchus). Samples were collected in Bolterdalen valley together with vegetation samples from the study site. The mesic tundra in this area was dominated by vascular plants (59% of vegetation cover). Bryophytes (16%) and lichens (25%) were also present. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of usnic acid and atranorin in lichen and faeces samples were performed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Contents of atranorin averaged 12.49 ± 0.41 mg g–1 in the thalli of Stereocaulon alpinum, while the average level of usnic acid was lowest in Cladonia mitis (12.75 ± 2.86 mg g–1) and highest in Flavocetraria cucullata (34.87 ± 0.47 mg g–1). Atranorin and usnic acid were detected in the faecal samples, averaging 0.41 ± 0.53 and 0.74 ± 1.11 (mean ± SD) mg g–1 dry matter, respectively. The presence of lichen secondary compounds in faeces from Svalbard reindeer shows that lichens are indeed included in their diet, although probably in small amounts because of depleted pastures. Contrary to previous findings in reindeer on mainland Norway, atranorin and usnic acid are not completely degraded or absorbed in Svalbard reindeer. To elucidate the mechanisms behind detoxification of lichen secondary compounds in reindeer, more research is needed on their respective rumen microbiomes and digestive enzymes.

Abstract: The inner-alpine dry valleys of the Swiss Alps are characterized by subcontinental climate, leading to many peculiarities in dry grassland species composition. Despite their well-known uniqueness, comprehensive studies on biodiversity patterns of the dry grasslands in these valleys were still missing. To close this gap, we sampled 161 10-m2 vegetation plots in the Rhône, Rhine and Inn valleys, recording vascular plants, terricolous bryophyte and lichen species, as well as environmental data. Additionally, we tested the scale-dependence of environmental drivers using 34 nested-plot series with seven grain sizes (0.0001–100 m2). We analysed the effects of environmental drivers related to productivity/stress, disturbance and within-plot heterogeneity on species richness. Mean species richness ranged from 2.3 species in 0.0001 m2 to 58.8 species in 100 m2. For all taxa combined, the most relevant drivers at the grain size of 10 m2 were southing (negative), litter (negative), mean annual precipitation (unimodal), gravel cover (negative), inclination (unimodal) and mean annual precipitation (unimodal). For vascular plants the pattern was similar, while bryophyte and lichen richness differed by the opposite relationship to mean annual precipitation as well as negative influences of mean herb layer height, grazing and mowing. The explained variance of the multiple regression model increased with grain size, with very low values for the smallest two grain sizes. While southing and litter had high importance for the fiver larger grain sizes, pH and gravel cover were particularly important at the intermediate grain sizes, and inclination and mean annual precipitation for the two largest grain sizes. The findings emphasize the importance of taxonomic group and grain size for patterns and drivers of species richness in vegetation, consistent with ecological theory. Differences in the diversity–environment relationships among the three taxonomic groups can partly be explained by asymmetric competition that leads to low bryophyte and lichen diversity where vascular plants do well and vice versa. The relatively low alpha diversity of vascular plants in dry grasslands in Swiss inner-alpine valleys compared to similar communities in other parts of the Palaearctic remains puzzling, especially because Swiss stands are often large and well-preserved.

Abstract: © 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. 7. On the trails of Josias Braun-Blanquet II : first results from the 12th EDGG Field Workshop studying the dry grasslands of the inneralpine dry valleys of Switzerland

Abstract: The 12th EDGG Field Workshop took place from 11 to 19 May 2019, organised by the Vegetation Ecology Group of the Institute of Natural Resource Sciences (IUNR) of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Like in the 11th Field Workshop in Austria, the main target was the "Inneralpine Trockenvegetation" (Festuco-Brometea and Sedo-Scleranthetea), which was first extensively sampled by Josias Braun-Blanquet and collaborators during the 1950s. We visited the Rhône valley in the cantons of Vaud and Valais, one of the most ex-treme xerothermic islands of the Alps and the Rhine and Inn valleys in the canton of Grison. In total, 30 nested-plot series (EDGG biodi-versity plots) of 0.0001 to 100 m² and 82 plots of 10 m² were sampled in meso-xeric, xeric and rocky grasslands of 25 different sites, rang-ing from 500 to 1,656 m a.s.l., under different topographic, bedrock and landuse conditions. All vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens were recorded in each plot, along with their cover values. We found on average 28.9 vascular plants on 10 m²; which was the lowest mean species richness of any previous EDGG Field Workshop. These values are comparable to the average species richness values of dry grasslands of the Aosta valley in Italy. The data sampled will be used to understand the biodiversity patterns regionally and in the Palae-arctic context as well as to place the Swiss dry grasslands in the modern European syntaxonomic system.

Abstract: During both winter and summer, Svalbard reindeer selectively feed on different types of vegetation that are not only a source of nutritional value, but also a place of heavy metal accumulation. In the present study, the content of cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, nickel, manganese, and zinc in reindeer excrement was measured. The main aims were to determine the seasonal content of several heavy metals in Svalbard reindeer faeces, and to compare their values in terms of dietary preferences during the year. Summer and winter reindeer excrement was gathered along a designated linear transect running through Bolterdalen and the vegetation described on 1 m2 plots. All of the analysed heavy metals were detected in the reindeer faeces and this fact seems to be connected with the incomplete content of these elements in an animal’s tissue after forage digestion. Analysis showed differences between summer and winter excrement in terms of concentrations of cadmium, chromium, iron, and nickel, but no differences were found for the other four elements analysed (manganese, lead, zinc, and copper). However, concentrations of heavy metals in faeces are rather low in comparison with both the levels in the vegetation that may be grazed by reindeer and in reindeer tissue. It is a boreo-temperate suboceanic species (Hill et al., 2007) relatively rare in SE Europe, since it is known only from Romania (Ellis et al., 2014d), Slovenia and Serbia (Sabovljevic´ et al., 2008 ; Hodgetts, 2015). The species was found in the Papuk Mountains, situated in the mainly lowland area of NE Croatia. In this region Papuk is the largest and highest mountain range, with peaks between 800 and 900 m a.s.l. They are characterized by high geological diversity dominated by metamorphic rocks, such as different types of schists, as well as granites. The climate is temperate, moderately warm without an explicit dry period. About 60% of the almost totally forested area is covered by different communities of beech forests. The well-developed black patches of A. rothii cover an area ca 2 m× 0.5 m on a steep north-facing cliff on the edge of an acidothermophilic sessile oak (Quercus petraea agg.) forest. The specimens of A. rothii grew on the bare rock with the following bryophyte species: Cynodontium polycarpon (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranella heteromalla (Hedw.) Schimp., Dicranum scoparium Hedw., Polytrichum piliferum Schreb. ex Hedw. and Rhabdoweisia (cf.) fugax (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp. The population is very small with an extremely high risk of extinction, therefore we propose CR as Red List status for the taxon in Croatia. According to the last checklist of the moss flora of Croatia (Sabovljevic´, 2006), only Andreaea rupestris Hedw., collected from just one locality in 1927 (Horvat, 1932 and ZA), was reported for the genus. The locality is very interesting from the point of view of the vegetation of Croatia, because it is within 100 m of the second stand of Fagus sylvatica L.-Sphagnum quinquefarium (Braithw.) Warnst. forest (Alegro et al., 2015). The second occurrence of Dicranum spurium Hedw. (Ellis et al., 2014d) and Rhabdoweisia fugax (Papp et al., 2013) in Croatia are also found here. Another interesting moss is S. capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw., that forms small red patches within the thick carpets of S. quinquefarium under the open oulder scree forest in the neighbourhood.

11. Badger Meles meles setts and bryophyte diversity: A newly found role for the game animal in European temperate forests

Abstract: Badgers ( Meles meles ) inhabiting Central European forests may be a leading factor driving changes in plant species community and diversity. The digging activity of badgers may shape plant species communities in important ways, especially in managed forests where natural events on the forest floor (e.g. soil disturbance due to tree uprooting) are largely eliminated by silviculture. We tested the following hypotheses in our study: that badger burrows act as focal sites which allow many bryophyte species to occur and complete their reproductive cycle; that the effect of burrows as focal sites of bryophyte diversity is more pronounced in mesotrophic forests than in fertile forests; and that the bryophyte communities of badger burrows differ quantitatively and qualitatively from those of their near vicinity. The study was done in 2013 in the Kampinos Forest, one of the largest (ca. 385 km 2 ) lowland forest complexes in central Poland. We distinguished two types of research sites: badger burrows (main setts) and paired reference plots. The pairs of plots were divided into two groups depending on habitat fertility (C/N ratio): lower-fertility plots ( N = 20) and higher-fertility plots ( N = 20). All data were collected from circular plots (5.64 m radius); the burrow plots were centered on the badger burrows and were paired with same-size reference plots. We recorded 55 bryophyte species in the survey, 26 of them exclusively on burrows. The beta diversity of the bryophyte assemblages, expressed as total dissimilarity, turnover and nestedness, was similar for the burrows and the reference plots. The mean number of bryophyte species and their Shannon H ′ diversity index were significantly higher for burrow plots than for undisturbed reference plots. Neither the number of species nor the species diversity of bryophytes were affected by the interaction of habitat fertility. We observed no relation between the profile of bryophyte groups on the burrows and specific substrate, acidity or life history. Only epiphytic bryophytes were overrepresented in burrow plots. The spatial scale and range of disturbance caused by badger digging suggest that badger setts contribute to the diversity of bryophyte species in managed and protected forests in Central Europe. The burrowing activity of badgers seems to be an important factor boosting the diversity of bryophyte species in managed forests, especially where natural topsoil disturbances are limited by silviculture practices. In forest ecosystems, badger activity creates a patch distribution of microhabitats for vascular plants – and also for bryophytes, as shown here.

Abstract: A remarkable range extension of the Neotropical hornwort Phaeomegaceros fimbriatus (Gottsche) Duff, J.C. Villarreal, Cargill et Renzaglia is presented. Phaeomegaceros fimbriatus was found on the alluvium of a river in a montane cloud forest of the Carrasco National Park in Bolivia. The morphological features and habitat preferences of the species are briefly described and its global distribution range is mapped.

Abstract: International audience; The liverworts of Île Amsterdam are surveyed. On the basis of historical collections and specimens collected on the island in 2006 and 2007 some 29 species and one variety belonging to 18 families have been recorded. This means that in comparison with the last survey of the island’s hepatics, in 2002, the number of taxa has been nearly doubled. Of these, eight taxa are recorded for the first time from the island, namely Kurzia capillaris (Sw.) Grolle subsp. stephanii (Renauld ex Steph.) Pócs, Adelanthus lindenbergianus (Lehm.) Mitt., Syzygiella colorata (Lehm.) K.Feldberg, Vá≈a, Hentschel et J.Heinrichs, S. sonderi (Gottsche) K.Feldberg, Vá≈a, Hentschel et J.Heinrichs, Cephaloziella varians (Gottsche)Steph., Anastrophyllum auritum (Lehm.) Steph., Andrewsianthus marionensis (S.W.Arnell) Grolle and Heterogemma patagonica (Herzog et Grolle) L.Söderstr. et Vá≈a, whilst Aneura subcanaliculata R.M.Schust. is excluded from the island’s hepatic flora. Two taxa, Kurzia capillaris subsp. stephanii and Gymnomitrion subintegrum (S.W.Arnell) Vá≈a, are illustrated, and maps of global distribution are presented for Plagiochila minutula (Hook.f. et Taylor) Gottsche, Lindenb. et Nees, Andrewsianthus marionensis, Heterogemma patagonica, Mnioloma fuscum and Gymnomitrion subintegrum. The liverwort flora is distinctly south-temperate to tropical and these two main distribution patterns consist of12 and eight species, respectively. The subantarctic element is represented by only three species, two species are endemic or near-endemic and five bipolar. Two names, Riccardia insularis Schiffn. and R. novo-amstelodamensis Schiffn., are lectotypified.; Cette étude porte sur les hépatiques de l’Île Amsterdam. L’analyse de collections historiques et d’échantillons collectés sur cette île en 2006 et 2007 a révélé la présence de 29 espèces et une variété, appartenant à 18 familles. Ce nombre de taxons est presque le double de celui indiqué dans la dernière étude publiée en 2002. Huit taxa sont cités pour la première fois de cette île, à savoir Kurzia capillaris (Sw.) La flore des hépatiques de l’Île Amsterdam est nettement tempérée australe à tropicale avec respectivement 12 et huit espèces pour ces deux modes principaux de distribution. Cinq espèces sont bipolaires alors que trois seulement sont subantarctiques et deux sont endémiques ou quasi endémique. Un lectotype est indiqué pour Riccardia insularis Schiffn. et pour R. novo-amstelodamensis Schiffn.

17. Recent occurrence of moss Buxbaumia viridis (Bryophyta, Buxbaumiaceae) in the Kłodzko region (Central and Eastern Sudetes, SW Poland)

Abstract: Recent occurrence of moss Buxbaumia viridis (Bryophyta, Buxbaumiaceae) in the Kłodzko region (Central and Eastern Sudetes, SW Poland) A rare epixylous moss, Buxbaumia viridis (Moug. ex Lam. & DC.) Brid. ex Moug. & Nestl., was searched at historical localities in the Kłodzko region, especially in Bialskie and Bystrzyckie Mts. The species was rediscovered at two localities in the upper part of the valley of Jedlnik stream on the east slope of Iwinka Mt. in Puszcza Śnieżnej Białki Nature Reserve. This paper presents data on autecology of B. viridis at one of the rediscovered localities as well as shows its current distribution in the Kłodzko region.

Abstract: Cladonia crispata var. cetrariiformis has only sporadically been reported from the Tatra Mts so far. However, undoubtedly it is common in this part of the Carpathians. New data about locations of the taxon are presented. Description and ecology of the Polish population are briefly characterized. The paper also contains a distribution map and useful taxonomical remarks concerning this lichen taxon.

Seven species of liverwort are reported from subantarctic Prince Edward Island in the Prince Edward Islands archipelago. Five of these, Hygrolembidium ventrosum, Clasmatocolea rigens, Anastrophyllum auritum, Andrewsianthus marionensis and Tylimanthus viridis, are new additions and the occurrence of Marchantia berteroana and Clasmatocolea vermicularis is confirmed for the island's flora. Global distribution maps for Hygrolembidium ventrosum, Clasmatocolea rigens and Tylimanthus viridis are provided. Considering these records, the liverwort flora of the Prince Edward Island now totals 42 species and is much richer in the number of species than that of the much larger Iles Kerguelen.

Michaela Kubová s.n. (AZU). A new understanding of the pleurocarpous moss species Pseudoamblystegium subtile was proposed by Vanderpoorten and Hedenäs (2009). The new genus is separated from the other Amblystegiaceae primarily due to its phylogenetic consistency and is characterised by the possession of leaves with a very short nerve, and erect capsules (Vanderpoorten and Hedenäs 2009).
