The primary function of plant fibers in reconstituted tobacco is to enhance the physical strength, and it can quite modify their physical properties. This study demonstrated the effect of various plant fibers and their beating degrees on the physical properties of reconstituted tobacco. Tensile index, burst index, uniformity, tensile stiffness orientation, and thermal conductivity coefficient were examined. The result revealed that the mechanical properties of reconstituted tobacco varied according to the type and beating degree of the fibers. The mechanical properties of softwood, cotton, and bast fibers showed an initial increase followed by a decrease with increasing beating degree, while bamboo fiber showed a continuous improvement in mechanical properties proportional to the beating degree. Conversely, hardwood fiber displayed an inverse relationship with its beating degree. Under identical beating conditions, reconstituted tobacco containing softwood fibers showed the greatest improvement in tensile properties, achieving the highest tensile strength, thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity. In particular, when softwood fibers were beaten to 50 °SR, the physical properties of the reconstituted tobacco peaked, with longitudinal and transverse tensile indices improving by 42.48% and 12.11%, respectively. [Objective]The present paper aimed to search for some technical methods which could reduce the tar content of reconstituted tobacco effectively. [Method]The effect of some factors such as ratio of stems to leaves, beating degree, basis weight, coating rate, proportion of plus fiber and calcium carbonate on the tar content of paper-making reconstituted tobacco was studied and those factors that could reduce the tar content effectively had also been verified. [Result] (i)Beating degree, basis weight, proportion of plus fiber, potassium salt and calcium carbonate had significant influence on the tar content of paper-making reconstituted tobacco;(ii)The ratio of stems to leaves of raw materials also had a certain influence on the tar content of paper-making reconstituted tobacco, and the tar content was the lowest when the ratio of stems to leaves was 2-1;(iii)There was a positive correlation between the coating rate and the tar content of paper-making reconstituted tobacco, the increase of coating rate would lead to the increase of tar content.(IV) The tar content of paper-making reconstituted tobacco prepared under a set of factors, including fiber proportion, beating degree, basis weight had fallen by more than 50 % ,and blending it in cigarette products had also reduced the tar content of cigarettes obviously. [Conclusion] The tar content of reconstituted tobacco could be reduced by adjusting the process parameters. While the PRT sample integrated with some tar-reduced factors was blended into cigarettes, it could greatly reduce the tar content of cigarettes. Therefore, some technical methods could be taken properly to reduce the tar content of PRT, and achieve ‘ reducing the harmful and tar content’ after blending it into cigarettes. Separators play a significant role in isolating the anode foil and cathode foil in capacitors to prevent short circuiting of the two poles resulting from contact. The physical and electrical properties of the separator have a decisive influence on the performance of the capacitor. Herein, we present an investigation and analysis of the physical and electrical properties of separators composed of cellulose fibers (Tencel), high-performance synthetic fibers (Poly-phenylene terephthalamide, abbreviated as PPTA), and those made of natural plant fibers (Sisal). Also, these separators were studied and compared under different beating degree conditions. The results indicate that the tightness of all three types of fibers gradually increases as the degree of raw fibrillation rises, leading to a gradual decrease in both the electrolyte absorption and the air permeability. The experimental results show that the overall performance of the capacitor using Tencel fiber separator is superior, the dielectric loss factor (1.01 ×1011 Ω·cm) is 87.5% lower than that of Sisal fiber separator, the capacitance (403.62 μF) is 1.4% higher than that of Sisal fiber separator, the absorption height (38 mm/10 min) is 90% higher than that of Sisal fiber separator, the leakage current (4.3 μA) is 10.4% lower than that of Sisal fiber 10.4% lower than Sisal fiber separator, equivalent series resistance (ESR) value (0.14 mΩ) 17.6% lower than Sisal fiber separator, and the best performance stability. Therefore, these results indicate that Tencel fiber can replace Sisal fiber as a better separator material for aluminium electrolytic capacitors. To obtain a suitable refining process for Pinus massoniana cellulose fibers (PMCF) and China fir cellulose fibers (CFCF), the effects of the beating gap and the pulp consistency on the physical properties and the morphology of the two cellulose fibers were investigated. The results showed that the physical properties of the PMCF and the CFCF were well affected by the beating gap and the pulp consistency. The CFCF showed a smaller weight-average length and width than that of the PMCF. The CFCF exhibited smaller weight-average length, width, and kink index than the PMCF. It is easy to get the high beating degree, indicating it is more easily to be refined. Additionally, the tensile index and burst index of PMCFP and CFCFP increased with increasing beating degree, while the tear index decreased. Compared to the CFCF, the paper made from PMCF had superior strength properties. Consequently, the PMCF was suitable for refining with a high pulp consistency and a medium beating gap, whereas the CFCF had a medium pulp consistency and a big beating gap.

Two morphologically different pulps, a long-fiber jute pulp from a soda-AQ process and a short-fiber Trema orientalis pulp from a kraft process, were evaluated and compared for their reinforcing potential. T. orientalis pulp needed less beating energy than jute pulp at the same drainage resistance. Addition of jute fiber pulp to the T. orientalis pulp increased tear strength. Sheet density of pulp blends was increased with the increase of beating degree of both pulps and the proportion of T. orientalis pulp. Tensile index and burst index of blended pulp were increased when the beating degree and proportion of T. orientalis pulp increased.

In this study, cationic starch (CS) was added to softwood kraft pulps at different degrees of beating in order to evaluate their effects on the strength properties of the pulp. Handsheets were prepared by using three levels of CS addition (0.75, 1.5, and 2.25% CS with respect to oven-dry pulp) to kraft pulps at different beating degrees (15, 20, 25, and 30° SR). It was found that the tensile and burst indices improved with beating, CS addition, and a combination of these two applications, while the tear index decreased. Remarkable increases in burst and tensile indices were achieved with a 0.75% addition of CS to 15° SR and 20° SR pulps, while notable decreases in tear index was obtained at the same conditions. A gradual tendency was observed in higher beating degrees (25° SR and 30° SR) and higher CS additions (1.50 and 2.25%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
