Este artículo describe la relación entre las características del entorno físico-social del vecindario y las capacidades personales en la vida tardía. Se identifican los retos que viven las personas mayores en el cumplimiento de sus metas, deseos en las actividades cotidianas, y las oportunidades que tienen para mejorar la capacidad de vivir en el vecindario de manera independiente. Desde la perspectiva de la geografía del envejecimiento, los hallazgos presentados se vinculan con la gerontología ambiental, e incluyen recomendaciones de diseño inclusivo; con base en el concepto de envejecimiento exitoso, se describen situaciones y características de la ciudad que ayudan a fortalecer las capacidades físicas, mentales y sociales, así como a promover un estilo de vida saludable. En suma, se ofrece una visión inclusiva e intergeneracional para construir vecindarios con una variedad de personas, en situaciones reales, y se acentúa la importancia de aprovechar las características del entorno familiar para fomentar la calidad y el bienestar en la vida tardía.

Durante la pandemia por Covid-19 los adultos mayores fueron señalados como el grupo poblacional con mayor vulnerabilidad, y aun cuando todos los grupos demográficos del planeta sufrieron pérdidas, cambios y adaptaciones en las actividades de vida diaria, la situación de confinamiento y restricción de movilidad en el ámbito urbano fue mayormente observada y prolongada para los ancianos. El objetivo de este trabajo es develar los efectos autopercibidos en bienestar físico, cognitivo y emocional en adultos mayores a causa del confinamiento y la restricción de movilidad durante la pandemia de Covid-19, en un estudio cualitativo transversal, con una muestra de casos tipo de 23 adultos mayores de entre 69 y 92 años, con características heterogéneas respecto a su condición de independencia funcional, economía, conexión social, nivel educativo, tipo de vivienda y acompañamiento, que habitan en la zona urbana de la ciudad de Aguascalientes, México. La metodología de estudio consistió en la aplicación de entrevistas a profundidad, sobre los cambios percibidos en su bienestar físico, cognitivo, social y emocional durante los 15 meses posteriores al decreto de la pandemia en marzo del 2020. El resultado evidencia un efecto negativo generalizado, destacando el aumento en la fragilidad física, deterioro de la memoria, y alteraciones emocionales de tristeza, miedo, soledad y enojo, dicho efecto es proporcional al nivel de aislamiento. Se concluye que el largo período de confinamiento generó estados emocionales negativos prevalecientes aún después de la reapertura de actividades sociales, lo que pone en discusión la pertinencia del confinamiento para los adultos mayores y la necesidad de desarrollar estrategias de continuidad biográfica en futuros escenarios de pandemia.

Background: Ambient air pollution has been associated with COVID-19 disease severity and antibody response induced by infection. Objectives: We examined the association between long-term exposure to air pollution and vaccine-induced antibody response. Methods: This study was nested in an ongoing population-based cohort, COVICAT, the GCAT-Genomes for Life cohort, in Catalonia, Spain, with multiple follow-ups. We drew blood samples in 2021 from 1,090 participants of 2,404 who provided samples in 2020, and we included 927 participants in this analysis. We measured immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgG, and IgA antibodies against five viral-target antigens, including receptor-binding domain (RBD), spike-protein (S), and segment spike-protein (S2) triggered by vaccines available in Spain. We estimated prepandemic (2018-2019) exposure to fine particulate matter [PM ≤ 2.5μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5)], nitrogen dioxide (NO2), black carbon (BC), and ozone (O3) using Effects of Low-Level Air Pollution: A Study in Europe (ELAPSE) models. We adjusted estimates for individual- and area-level covariates, time since vaccination, and vaccine doses and type and stratified by infection status. We used generalized additive models to explore the relationship between air pollution and antibodies according to days since vaccination. Results: Among vaccinated persons not infected by SARS-CoV-2 (n=632), higher prepandemic air pollution levels were associated with a lower vaccine antibody response for IgM (1 month post vaccination) and IgG. Percentage change in geometric mean IgG levels per interquartile range of PM2.5 (1.7μg/m3) were −8.1 (95% CI: −15.9, 0.4) for RBD,−9.9 (−16.2, −3.1) for S, and −8.4 (−13.5, −3.0) for S2. We observed a similar pattern for NO2 and BC and an inverse pattern for O3. Differences in IgG levels by air pollution levels persisted with time since vaccination. We did not observe an association of air pollution with vaccine antibody response among participants with prior infection (n=295). Discussion: Exposure to air pollution was associated with lower COVID-19 vaccine antibody response. Producto de la pandemia de COVID-19, la práctica educativa en los distintos niveles del sistema se vio alterada y sometida a una situación de contingencia que obligó a los docentes a usar herramientas tecnológicas y estrategias para la enseñanza en un contexto de virtualidad. El presente estudio tiene como finalidad describir el paso de una docencia presencial a una educación remota de emergencia y las dificultades que presentó esto para los académicos de la Universidad Arturo Prat (UNAP) de Chile, en cuanto al uso de las tecnologías disponibles para el desarrollo de las actividades lectivas en el contexto de la pandemia. Se desarrolla una investigación de carácter cualitativo, para caracterizar la disposición y problemáticas que evidenciaron los académicos frente a la enseñanza remota, a través de las percepciones de los directores de docencia. Los resultados muestran que los académicos han trasladado el formato de sus clases presenciales a la virtualidad, generando con ello la aplicación de un nuevo formato docente en modalidad remota. Asimismo, se demuestra un uso diferenciado de las tecnologías digitales disponibles según los tramos de edad de los docentes.

Sparse data exist on the complex natural immunity to SARS-CoV-2 at the population level. We applied a well-validated multiplex serology test in 5000 participants of a general population study in Catalonia in blood samples collected from end June to mid November 2020. Based on responses to fifteen isotype-antigen combinations, we detected a seroprevalence of 18.1% in adults (n = 4740), and modeled extrapolation to the general population of Catalonia indicated a 15.3% seroprevalence. Antibodies persisted up to 9 months after infection. Immune profiling of infected individuals revealed that with increasing severity of infection (asymptomatic, 1-3 symptoms, ≥ 4 symptoms, admitted to hospital/ICU), seroresponses were more robust and rich with a shift towards IgG over IgA and anti-spike over anti-nucleocapsid responses. Among seropositive participants, lower antibody levels were observed for those ≥ 60 years vs < 60 years old and smokers vs non-smokers. Overweight/obese participants vs normal weight had higher antibody levels. Adolescents (13-15 years old) (n = 260) showed a seroprevalence of 11.5%, were less likely to be tested seropositive compared to their parents and had dominant anti-spike rather than anti-nucleocapsid IgG responses. Our study provides an unbiased estimate of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in Catalonia and new evidence on the durability and heterogeneity of post-infection immunity. The combined analysis of haplotype panels with phenotype clinical cohorts is a common approach to explore the genetic architecture of human diseases. However, genetic studies are mainly based on single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and small insertions and deletions (indels). Here, we contribute to fill this gap by generating a dense haplotype map focused on the identification, characterization, and phasing of structural variants (SVs). By integrating multiple variant identification methods and Logistic Regression Models (LRMs), we present a catalogue of 35 431 441 variants, including 89 178 SVs (≥50 bp), 30 325 064 SNVs and 5 017 199 indels, across 785 Illumina high coverage (30x) whole-genomes from the Iberian GCAT Cohort, containing a median of 3.52M SNVs, 606 336 indels and 6393 SVs per individual. The haplotype panel is able to impute up to 14 360 728 SNVs/indels and 23 179 SVs, showing a 2.7-fold increase for SVs compared with available genetic variation panels. The value of this panel for SVs analysis is shown through an imputed rare Alu element located in a new locus associated with Mononeuritis of lower limb, a rare neuromuscular disease. This study represents the first deep characterization of genetic variation within the Iberian population and the first operational haplotype panel to systematically include the SVs into genome-wide genetic studies. Given the highly variable clinical phenotype of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a deeper analysis of the host genetic contribution to severe COVID-19 is important to improve our understanding of underlying disease mechanisms. Here, we describe an extended GWAS meta-analysis of a well-characterized cohort of 3,260 COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure and 12,483 population controls from Italy, Spain, Norway and Germany/Austria, including stratified analyses based on age, sex and disease severity, as well as targeted analyses of chromosome Y haplotypes, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region and the SARS-CoV-2 peptidome. By inversion imputation, we traced a reported association at 17q21.31 to a highly pleiotropic ∼0.9-Mb inversion polymorphism and characterized the potential effects of the inversion in detail. Human pigmentation has largely been associated with different disease prevalence among populations, but most of these studies are observational and inconclusive. Known to be genetically determined, pigmentary traits have largely been studied by Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS), mostly in Caucasian ancestry cohorts from North Europe, identifying robustly, several loci involved in many of the pigmentary traits. Here, we conduct a detailed analysis by GWAS and Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) of 13 pigmentary-related traits in a South European cohort of Caucasian ancestry (n = 20,000). We observed fair phototype strongly associated with non-melanoma skin cancer and other dermatoses and confirmed by PRS-approach the shared genetic basis with skin and eye diseases, such as melanoma (OR = 0.95), non-melanoma skin cancer (OR = 0.93), basal cell carcinoma (OR = 0.97) and darker phototype with vitiligo (OR = 1.02), cataracts (OR = 1.04). Detailed genetic analyses revealed 37 risk loci associated with 10 out of 13 analyzed traits, and 16 genes significantly associated with at least two pigmentary traits. Some of them have been widely reported, such as MC1R, HERC2, OCA2, TYR, TYRP1, SLC45A2, and some novel candidate genes C1QTNF3, LINC02876, and C1QTNF3-AMACR have not been reported in the GWAS Catalog, with regulatory potential. These results highlight the importance of the assess phototype as a genetic proxy of skin functionality and disease when evaluating open mixed populations.

The combined analysis of haplotype panels with phenotype clinical cohorts is a common approach to explore the genetic architecture of human diseases. However, genetic studies are mainly based on single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and small insertions and deletions (indels). Here, we contribute to fill this gap by generating a dense haplotype map focused on the identification, characterization and phasing of structural variants (SVs). By integrating multiple variant identification methods and Logistic Regression models, we present a catalogue of 35,431,441 variants, including 89,178 SVs (≥50bp), 30,325,064 SNVs and 5,017,199 indels, across 785 Illumina high coverage (30X) whole-genomes from the Iberian GCAT Cohort, containing 3.52M SNVs, 606,336 indels and 6,393 SVs in median per individual. The haplotype panel is able to impute up to 14,360,728 SNVs/indels and 23,179 SVs, showing a 2.7-fold increase for SVs compared with available genetic variation panels. The value of this panel for SVs analysis is shown through an imputed rare Alu element located in a new locus associated with mononeuritis of lower limb, a rare neuromuscular disease. This study represents the first deep characterization of genetic variation within the Iberian population and the first operational haplotype panel to systematically include the SVs into genome-wide genetic studies.

The aims of the present study were to optimize the detection of common fusion gene transcripts associated with childhood B-ALL prognosis through the development and validation of a one-step RT-qPCR assay and to identify the prevalence of these genes in a cohort of pediatric patients attended in public hospitals in Mexico City. The one-step RT-qPCR assay was sensitive, specific, easy to use, fast and cost efficient. The standard curves were linear, with amplification efficiencies between 97-107%; coefficients of variation were 2.1-3.0% in reproducibility and 2.6-3.8% in repeatability, with agreement between two different laboratories. The prevalence of fusion gene transcripts was ETV6-RUNX1, 10.3%; TCF3-PBX1, 7.5%; BCR-ABL1p190, 3.6%; and KMT2A-AFF1, 2.8%. The prevalence of the ETV6-RUNX1 fusion was low, consistent with the findings in Hispanics. The KMT2A-AFF1 fusion was not exclusively present in infants, as we also found it in patients 4-16 years of age, in whom it was related to a poor prognosis. TCF3-PBX1 patients were associated with an intermediate outcome. The present study highlights the importance of the detection of common genetic fusions in Mexican children with ALL, taking into account that some have molecular subtypes associated with a poor prognosis.

Background Mexico City has one of the highest incidences and mortality rates of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the world and a high frequency of early relapses (17%) and early mortality (15%). Otherwise, childhood overweight and obesity are reaching epidemic proportions. They have been associated with poor outcomes in children with ALL. The aim of present study was to identify if overweight and obesity are predictors of early mortality and relapse in Mexican children with ALL. Methods A multicenter cohort study was conducted. ALL children younger than 15 years old were included and followed-up during the first 24 months after diagnosis. Overweight and obesity were classified according World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria. Early mortality and early relapses were the main outcomes. Results A total of 1070 children were analyzed. Overweight/obesity at diagnosis were predictors of early mortality (WHO: HR = 1.4, 95%CI:1.0–2.0; CDC: HR = 1.6, 95%CI:1.1–2.3). However, no associations between overweight (WHO: HR = 1.5, 95%CI:0.9–2.5; CDC: HR = 1.0; 95% CI:0.6–1.6) and obesity (WHO: HR = 1.5, 95%CI:0.7–3.2; CDC: HR = 1.4; 95%CI:0.9–2.3) with early relapse were observed. Conclusions Overweight and obese patients embody a subgroup with high risk of dying during leukemia treatment. Variability in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity between individuals is partly due to genetic factors. Here, we identify 4 genomic loci with suggestive associations for SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and 19 for COVID-19 disease severity. Four of these 23 loci likely have an ethnicity-specific component. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals in 11 loci colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) associated with the expression of 20 genes in 62 tissues/cell types (range: 1:43 tissues/gene), including lung, brain, heart, muscle, and skin as well as the digestive system and immune system. We perform genetic fine mapping to compute 99% credible SNP sets, which identify 10 GWAS loci that have eight or fewer SNPs in the credible set, including three loci with one single likely causal SNP. Our study suggests that the diverse symptoms and disease severity of COVID-19 observed between individuals is associated with variants across the genome, affecting gene expression levels in a wide variety of tissue types., Graphical abstract, D’Antonio et al. characterize associations between GWAS signals for COVID-19 disease and eQTLs in 69 human tissues to identify causal variants and their underlying molecular mechanisms. Sparse data exist on the complex natural immunity to SARS-CoV-2 at the population level. We applied a well-validated multiplex serology test in 5000 participants of a general population study in Catalonia in blood samples collected from end June to mid November 2020. Based on responses to fifteen isotype-antigen combinations, we detected a seroprevalence of 18.1% in adults (n=4740), and modeled extrapolation to the general population of Catalonia indicated a 15.3% seroprevalence. Antibodies persistedup to 9 months after infection. Immune profiling of infected individuals revealed that with increasing severity of infection (asymptomatic, 1-3 symptoms, ≥4 symptoms, admitted to hospital/ICU), seroresponses were more robust and rich with a shift towardsIgG over IgA and anti-spike over anti-nucleocapsid responses. The global emergency produced by COVID-19 has been a turning point for health organizations. Healthcare professionals have been exposed to high levels of stress and workload. Close contact with infected patients and the infectious capacity of COVID-19 mean that this group is especially vulnerable to contagion. In various countries, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale has been shown to be a fast and reliable tool. Early detection of fear complements clinical efforts to prevent emotional disorders. Thus, concepts focused on positive occupational health, such as Job Crafting or psychological empowerment (PE), have been examined as a tool to prevent mental health problems at work. In this work, we intended to adapt and validate the 7-item Fear of COVID-19 Scale in health workers (N = 194). The interpretation of the measurement model indicates adequate values of internal consistency reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity. The overall goodness of fit of the model was also adequate. The structural model indicates that the implementation of job crafting measures in health services leads to workers’ greater PE. High levels of anxiety and depression prevent health professionals from psychologically detaching from work. In turn, PE can reduce the emotional disorders caused by the fear of COVID-19.

Background: emerging evidence links ambient air pollution with coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease, an association that is methodologically challenging to investigate. Objectives: we examined the association between long-term exposure to air pollution with SARS-CoV-2 infection measured through antibody response, level of antibody response among those infected, and COVID-19 disease. Methods: we contacted 9,605 adult participants from a population-based cohort study in Catalonia between June and November 2020; most participants were between 40 and 65 years of age. We drew blood samples from 4,103 participants and measured immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgA, and IgG antibodies against five viral target antigens to establish infection to the virus and levels of antibody response among those infected. We defined COVID-19 disease using self-reported hospital admission, prior positive diagnostic test, or more than three self-reported COVID-19 symptoms after contact with a COVID-19 case. We estimated prepandemic (2018-2019) exposure to fine particulate matter [PM with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5μ m ( PM 2.5 )], nitrogen dioxide ( NO2 ), black carbon (BC), and ozone ( O3 ) at the residential address using hybrid land-use regression models. We calculated log-binomial risk ratios (RRs), adjusting for individual- and area-level covariates. Results: among those tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, 743 (18.1%) were seropositive. Air pollution levels were not statistically significantly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection: Adjusted RRs per interquartile range were 1.07 (95% CI: 0.97, 1.18) for NO 2, 1.04 (95% CI: 0.94, 1.14) for PM 2.5 , 1.00 (95% CI: 0.92, 1.09) for BC, and 0.97 (95% CI: 0.89, 1.06) for O3. Among infected participants, exposure to NO2 and PM 2.5 were positively associated with IgG levels for all viral target antigens. Among all participants, 481 (5.0%) had COVID-19 disease. Air pollution levels were associated with COVID-19 disease: adjusted RRs = 1.14 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.29) for NO2 and 1.17 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.32) for PM 2.5. Exposure to O3 was associated with a slightly decreased risk (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.83, 1.03). Associations of air pollution with COVID-19 disease were more pronounced for severe COVID-19, with RRs = 1.26 (95% CI: 0.89, 1.79) for NO 2 and 1.51 (95% CI: 1.06, 2.16) for PM 2.5. Discussion: exposure to air pollution was associated with a higher risk of COVID-19 disease and level of antibody response among infected but not with SARS-CoV-2 infection. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP9726.

In urban areas prone to flash floods, characterization of social resilience is critical to guarantee the success of emergency management plans. In this study, we present the methodological approach that led to the submission and subsequent approval of the Civil Protection Plan of Navaluenga (Central Spain), in which the first phase was to analyse flood hazard by combining the Hydrological Modelling System (HECHMS) and the Iber 2D hydrodynamic model. We then analysed social vulnerability and designed measures to put into practice within the framework of the Civil Protection Plan. At a later phase, we assessed citizens' flash-flood risk perception and level of awareness regarding some key variables of the Civil Protection Plan. To this end, 254 adults representing roughly 12% of the population census were interviewed. Responses were analysed descriptively, comparing awareness regarding preparedness and response actions with the corresponding information and behaviours previously defined in the Civil Protection Plan. In addition, we carried out a latent class cluster analysis aimed at identifying the different groups present among the interviewees. Our results showed that risk perception is low. Specifically, 60.8% of the interviewees showed low risk perception and low awareness (cluster 1); 24.4% had high risk perception and low awareness (cluster 2), while the remaining 14.8% presented high long-term risk perception and high awareness (cluster 3). Evidence showing the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in leukemogenesis have emerged in the last decade. It has been proposed that these genes can be used as diagnosis and/or prognosis biomarkers in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). To know if lncRNAs are associated with early relapse and early mortality, a microarray-based gene expression analysis in children with B-lineage ALL (B-ALL) was conducted. Cox regression analyses were performed. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. LINC00152 and LINC01013 were among the most differentially expressed genes in patients with early relapse and early mortality. For LINC00152 high expression, the risks of relapse and death were HR: 4.16 (95% CI: 1.46&ndash, 11.86) and HR: 1.99 (95% CI: 0.66&ndash, 6.02), respectively, for LINC01013 low expression, the risks of relapse and death were HR: 3.03 (95% CI: 1.14&ndash, 8.05) and HR: 6.87 (95% CI: 1.50&ndash, 31.48), respectively. These results were adjusted by NCI risk criteria and chemotherapy regimen. The lncRNA&ndash, mRNA co-expression analysis showed that LINC00152 potentially regulates genes involved in cell substrate adhesion and peptidyl&ndash, tyrosine autophosphorylation biological processes. The results of the present study point out that LINC00152 could be a potential biomarker of relapse in children with B-ALL.

La investigación analiza los atributos del entorno construido y las funciones del entorno social que determinan la atractividad del mercado público tradicional y favorecen el envejecimiento activo en la ciudad de Aguascalientes (México). La metodología ha consistido en una encuesta a personas mayores, y también datos recabados de sensores ambientales en el mercado de Terán. Los resultados mostraron que la atractividad del mercado tradicional en relación con la óptima interacción con las necesidades del adulto mayor está determinada por la funcionalidad de los atributos del ambiente físico-construido y la usabilidad de las funciones del entorno social. Se discuten los posibles beneficios que tiene el mercado público atractivo en la estimulación del envejecimiento activo y saludable y, en general, en la calidad de vida en la vejez. The research analyzes the attributes of the constructed surroundings and the functions of the social environment that determine the attractiveness of the traditional public marketplace and foster active aging in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The methodology consisted of conducting a survey of elderly people and collecting data from environmental sensors at the public marketplace of Terán. The results showed that the attractiveness of the traditional marketplace in relation to optimal interaction with the needs of the elderly is determined by the functionality of the attributes of the constructed material surroundings and the usability of the functions of the social environment. It discusses the possible benefits of the attractive public marketplace in stimulating active and healthy aging, as well as the general quality of life in old age. Esta pesquisa analisa os atributos do ambiente construído e as funções do contexto social que determinam a atratividade do mercado público tradicional e favorecem o envelhecimento ativo na cidade de Aguascalientes (México). A metodologia consistiu na aplicação de um questionário a pessoas idosas e também em dados coletados de sensores ambientais no mercado de Terán. Os resultados mostraram que a atratividade do mercado tradicional com relação à interação adequada com as necessidades do idoso está determinada pela funcionalidade dos atributos do ambiente físico construído e da usabilidade das funções do contexto social. Discutem-se os possíveis benefícios que o mercado público atrativo tem na estimulação do envelhecimento ativo e saudável e, em geral, na qualidade de vida na velhice.

The mode in which sexual organisms choose mates is a key evolutionary process, as it can have a profound impact on fitness and speciation. One way to study mate choice in the wild is by measuring trait correlation between mates. Positive assortative mating is inferred when individuals of a mating pair display traits that are more similar than those expected under random mating while negative assortative mating is the opposite. A recent review of 1134 trait correlations found that positive estimates of assortative mating were more frequent and larger in magnitude than negative estimates. Here, we describe the scale-of-choice effect (SCE), which occurs when mate choice exists at a smaller scale than that of the investigator's sampling, while simultaneously the trait is heterogeneously distributed at the true scale-of-choice. We demonstrate the SCE by Monte Carlo simulations and estimate it in two organisms showing positive (Littorina saxatilis) and negative (L. fabalis) assortative mating. Our results show that both positive and negative estimates are biased by the SCE by different magnitudes, typically toward positive values. Therefore, the low frequency of negative assortative mating observed in the literature may be due to the SCE's impact on correlation estimates, which demands new experimental evaluation.

This special issue on gender and environment features five contributions: a theoretical review and four empirical studies. The former proposes methodological strategies from the gender perspective and analyses its presence in research in the field of environmental psychology and in the study of people-environment relationships. Three of the empirical studies use qualitative methods and explore gender as it relates to: (a) the perception of risk (linking masculinity and technocentric epistemic conceptions); (b) agroecosystem conservation practices (identifying the underlying motivations in three generations of women in a rural area of south-eastern Spain); and (c) the current sustainable consumption initiatives along with the communication that fosters it in the Community of Madrid. Finally, this monograph is brought to a close with a correlational study that corroborates that femininity predicts ecocentrism. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer worldwide. Mexico City has one of the highest incidences and mortality rates of this cancer. It has previously been recognized that chromosomal translocations are important in cancer etiology. Specific fusion genes have been considered as important treatment targets in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The present research aimed at the identification and characterization of novel fusion genes with potential clinical implications in Mexican children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The RNA-sequencing approach was used. Four fusion genes not previously reported were identified: CREBBP-SRGAP2B, DNAH14-IKZF1, ETV6-SNUPN, ETV6-NUFIP1. Although a fusion gene is not sufficient to cause leukemia, it could be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Notably, these new translocations were found in genes encoding for hematopoietic transcription factors which are known to play an important role in leukemogenesis and disease prognosis such as IKZF1, CREBBP, and ETV6. In addition, they may have an impact on the prognosis of Mexican pediatric patients with ALL, with the potential to be included in the current risk stratification schemes or used as therapeutic targets.

Tuberculosis causes close to 1.5 million deaths in the world, with new cases exceeding 9 million in recent years. Coinfection with HIV further worsens the global situation. New molecules that overcome the limitations of currently used drugs are needed. We aimed to determine whether HHC-10 is active against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteria Mycobacterium bovis bacille calmette guerin (BCG) in vitro and in vivo. For this, HHC-10 was tested in vitro using different peptide concentrations, and in vivo, in C57BL/6 mice infected intratracheally, at two doses (1.25 and 2.5 mg kg(-1), once a week, 4 weeks). Interferon (IFN)-γ, TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-4, and IL-10 mRNA transcript levels were compared between treated and nontreated mice. In vitro, HHC-10 decreased 69% and 88% the number of colony-forming units (CFU) per millileter recovered after 24-hr treatment at 50 and 100 μg/ml, respectively. In vivo, BCG CFUs in mouse lungs were reduced 77.8% and 95.8% at 1.25 and 2.5 mg kg(-1), respectively. IFN-γ expression was lower in the HHC-10-treated group than that of nontreated animals. Considering genomic conservation between BCG and M. tuberculosis, the in vitro and in vivo activities of HHC-10 observed in this study suggest that the use of this peptide may be useful as therapeutic agent against tuberculosis.

Posterior urethral valve pathologies are the most frequent childhood obstructive uropathy reported, and we infer their presence on diagnosing foetal ascites and oligohydramnios. Early action is vital to determine the long-term development and the degree of impairment of renal function. We report a newborn male 34 weeks of gestation with a prenatal diagnosis of foetal ascites, fluid on the loose in renal fossa and oligohydramnios. Subsequent studies have shown the presence of posterior urethral valves with associated significant vesicoureteral reflux. There was no secondary renal damage. Intrauterine decompression of the urinary tract seems to have exerted a protective role against kidney damage. This finding supports the role of foetal decompression surgery in early and severely obstructive forms to improve the prognosis of renal function in the long term.

This study focuses on the cognitive components of general environmental attitudes. Taking as a starting point the scale of Thompson and Barton (1994) to identify ecocentric and anthropocentric motives in environmental conservation, the beliefs that guide attitudes in the person-environment relationship are analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to contrast the tripartite structure of these beliefs—based on egoistic, socioaltruistic, and biospheric aspects—with a two-dimensional structure that confronts ecocentric and anthropocentric orientations. The results obtained from two samples, a student sample (n = 212) and a sample from the general population of Madrid (n = 205), indicate the existence of a three-dimensional structure of environmental beliefs: an anthropocentric dimension based on the instrumental value of the environment for human beings, a biospheric dimension that values the environment for its own sake, and, lastly, an egobiocentric dimension that values the human being within nature as a whole.
