Abstract

Recorded head kinematics from head-impact measurement devices (HIMd) are pivotal for evaluating brain stress and strain through head finite element models (hFEM). The variability in kinematic recording windows across HIMd presents challenges as they yield inconsistent hFEM responses. Despite establishing an ideal recording window for maximum principal strain (MPS) in brain tissue, uncertainties persist about the impact characteristics influencing vulnerability when this window is shortened. This study aimed to scrutinize factors within impact kinematics affecting the reliability of different recording windows on whole-brain peak MPS using a validated hFEM. Utilizing 53 on-field head impacts recorded via an instrumented mouthguard during a Canadian varsity football game, 10 recording windows were investigated with varying pre- and post- impact-trigger durations. Tukey pair-wise comparisons revealed no statistically significant differences in MPS responses for the different recording windows. However, specific impacts showed marked variability up to 40 %. It was found, through correlation analyses, that impacts with lower peak linear acceleration exhibited greater response variability across different pretrigger durations. Signal shape, analyzed through spectral analysis, influenced the time required for MPS development, resulting in specific impacts requiring a prolonged post-trigger duration. This study adds to the existing consensus on standardizing HIMd acquisition time windows and sheds light on impact characteristics leading to peak MPS variation across different head impact kinematic recording windows. Considering impact characteristics in research assessments is crucial, as certain impacts, affected by recording duration, may lead to significant errors in peak MPS responses during cumulative longitudinal exposure assessments.

Objective: The primary objective of this systematic review is to assess the efficacy of TMS and tDCS in reducing clinical pain intensity in chronic orofacial pain (OFP) disorders. The secondary objectives are to describe adverse effects, duration of relief, and TMS/tDCS methodologies used in chronic OFP disorders. Methods: A search was performed in MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria were 1) population: adults diagnosed with chronic OFP including neuropathic and non-neuropathic disorders; 2) intervention: active TMS or tDCS stimulation regardless of the used protocol; 3) comparison: sham TMS or tDCS stimulation; and 4) outcome: primary outcome was patient reported pain intensity. Secondary outcomes were duration of pain relief, adverse effects, and methodological parameters. Risk of bias and quality of study reporting were also assessed. Results: A total of 556 individual citations were identified by the search strategy, with 14 articles meeting selection criteria (TMS=11; tDCS=3). Data were obtained for a total of 228 patients. Included OFP disorders were trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal neuropathy, burning mouth syndrome, atypical facial pain, and temporomandibular disorders. Significant pain reductions were obtained in both techniques. More number of sessions yielded to more durable effects. Overall, high risk of bias and poor study quality were found. Conclusion: TMS and tDCS appear to be safe and promising alternatives to reduce pain intensity in different chronic OFP disorders. Additional research effort is needed to reduce bias, improve quality, and characterize optimal brain stimulation parameters to promote their efficacy. Abstract

Food security is a major issue in West Africa. As a consequence of climate change, increases in temperature and shifts in precipitation will have major ramifications for which crops can be grown in the region. Here we conducted an experiment to evaluate the impacts of shortterm projected heat and water stress on three tomato varieties (Solanum lycopersicum): Oregon Spring, Roma VF, and Tropic. The plants were initially cultivated in the glasshouse programmed at 28/20oC day/night cycle. The treatments investigated were: control (CT); heat stress (Ht); water stress (Ws) and Heat + together with water stress (HtWs). For heatwave treatments, a 35/23oC day/night gradually taken up in a cycle was imposed. The water stress conditions were by decreasing the soil water field capacity by 50%. Leaf gas exchange and plant production parameters were measured. Our result indicated that all varieties suffered from significant declines in yield as consequence of the stresses. The heatwave treatment proved more detrimental on the tomato fruit yield than the water stress, except when these two treatments occurred in sequential cycles. The results of this study suggest that heatwaves and water stress, projected to occur more frequently due to climate change, may adversely impact the growth and yield of these three tomato varieties. Abstract

Two 3-year time series of hourly measurements of the fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) in the upper 10 m of the surface layer of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea have been recorded by CARIOCA sensors almost two decades apart, in 1995–1997 and 2013–2015. By combining them with the alkalinity derived from measured temperature and salinity, we calculate changes in pH and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). DIC increased in surface seawater by ∼25 µmol kg−1 and fCO2 by 40 µatm, whereas seawater pH decreased by ∼0.04 (0.0022 yr−1). The DIC increase is about 15 % larger than expected from the equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. This could result from natural variability, e.g. the increase between the two periods in the frequency and intensity of winter convection events. Likewise, it could be the signature of the contribution of the Atlantic Ocean as a source of anthropogenic carbon to the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar. We then estimate that the part of DIC accumulated over the last 18 years represents ∼30 % of the total inventory of anthropogenic carbon in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract

Tracking of cell populations in vitro in time lapse microscopy images enables automatic high throughput spatiotemporal measurements of a range of cell cycle mechanics and dynamics. Both in clinical and academic environments, large scale cellular data analysis using such methods stands to facilitate a paradigm shift in approaches to understanding cell biology. In this paper, we present a novel approach to cell population tracking and segmentation. We employ the CONDENSATION algorithm in tandem with Fast Levels Sets and Exclusion Zones for robust tracking and pixel-accurate segmentation. The algorithm feeds its output to a lineage filter. The complete approach is validated in terms of its ability to track and identify nuclei, and by its success in detecting abnormalities in the length of mitosis.

Abstract

International audience; Depuis treize ans, l’Institut Universitaire Européen de la mer (IUEM, Université de Bretagne Occidentale), l’Ifremer et le CNRS/INSU sont partenaires dans l’ observation régulière et à long terme de la physico-chimie des eaux côtières, à l’interface de la rade de Brest et de la mer d’Iroise. Ces observations sont menées à haute fréquence au moyen de la bouée instrumentée MAREL-Iroise et à basse fréquence au moyen du suivi manuel hebdomadaire SOMLIT-Brest. Situés sur le même point de prélèvement, MAREL-Iroise et SOMLIT-Brest forment un outil d’observation robuste pour répondre aux besoins des chercheurs. Ces besoins sont liés à des questions multiples en lien avec le fonctionnement de l’écosystème, les cycles biogéochimiques ou plus récemment, l’impact des phénomènes grande échelle. Une revue des principaux résultats scientifiques obtenus jusqu’à présent permet d’apprécier l’importance de cet outil d’observation.
