Search

The electromagnetic trapping of ion chains can be regarded as a process of non-trivial entangled quantum state preparation within Hilbert spaces of the local axial motional modes. To begin uncovering properties of this entanglement resource produced as a byproduct of conventional ion-trap quantum information processing, the quantum continuous-variable formalism is herein utilized to focus on the leading-order entangled ground state of local motional modes in the presence of a quadratic trapping potential. The decay of entanglement between disjoint subsets of local modes is found to exhibit features of entanglement structure and responses to partial measurement reminiscent of the free massless scalar field vacuum. With significant fidelities between the two, even for large system sizes, a framework is established for initializing quantum field simulations via "imaging" extended entangled states from natural sources, rather than building correlations through deep circuits of few-body entangling operators. By calculating probabilities in discrete Fock subspaces of the local motional modes, considerations are presented for locally transferring these pre-distributed entanglement resources to the qudits of ion internal energy levels, improving this procedure's anticipated experimental viability., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 3 appendices

Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. When observing a quantum field via detectors with access to only the mixed states of spatially separated, local regions -- a ubiquitous experimental design -- the capacity to access the full extent of distributed entanglement can be limited, shrouded by classical correlations. By performing projective measurements of the field external to two detection patches and classically communicating the results, underlying pure states may be identified for which entanglement quantification is clear. In the Gaussian continuous-variable states of the free scalar field vacuum, this protocol uncovers a disparity between the spacelike entanglement established within the field and that which is locally detectable. This discrepancy is found to grow exponentially with the separation between observation regions. The protocol developed herein offers insight and practical guidance for clarifying the unavoidable distortion of quantum field correlations when viewed from the vantage of a pair of local observers., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 5 appendices

The many-body entanglement between two finite (size-$d$) disjoint vacuum regions of non-interacting lattice scalar field theory in one spatial dimension -- a $(d_A \times d_B)_{\rm mixed}$ Gaussian continuous variable system -- is locally transformed into a tensor-product "core" of $(1_A \times 1_B)_{\rm mixed}$ entangled pairs. Accessible entanglement within these core pairs exhibits an exponential hierarchy, and as such identifies the structure of dominant region modes from which vacuum entanglement could be extracted into a spatially separated pair of quantum detectors. Beyond the core, remaining modes of the "halo" are determined to be AB-separable in isolation, as well as separable from the core. However, state preparation protocols that distribute entanglement in the form of $(1_A \times 1_B)_{\rm mixed}$ core pairs are found to require additional entanglement in the halo that is obscured by classical correlations. This inaccessible (bound) halo entanglement is found to mirror the accessible entanglement, but with a step behavior as the continuum is approached. It remains possible that alternate initialization protocols that do not utilize the exponential hierarchy of core-pair entanglement may require less inaccessible entanglement. We consider the scattering of dark matter particles from superfluid liquid $^4$He, which has been proposed as a target for their direct detection. Focusing on dark matter masses below ~1 MeV, we demonstrate from sum-rule arguments the importance of the production of single phonons with energies $\omega \lesssim 1$ meV. We show further that the anomalous dispersion of phonons in liquid $^4$He at low pressures [i.e., $d^2\omega(q)/dq^2>0$, where $q$ and $\omega(q)$ are the phonon momentum and energy] has the important consequence that a single phonon will decay over a relatively short distance into a shower of lower energy phonons centered on the direction of the original phonon. Thus the experimental challenge in this regime is to detect a shower of low energy phonons, not just a single phonon. A cryogenic apparatus is described that enables a new experiment, nEDM@SNS, with a major improvement in sensitivity compared to the existing limit in the search for a neutron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM). It uses superfluid $^4$He to produce a high density of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN) which are contained in a suitably coated pair of measurement cells. The experiment, to be operated at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, uses polarized $^3$He from an Atomic Beam Source injected into the superfluid $^4$He and transported to the measurement cells as a co-magnetometer. The superfluid $^4$He is also used as an insulating medium allowing significantly higher electric fields, compared to previous experiments, to be maintained across the measurement cells. These features provide an ultimate statistical uncertainty for the EDM of $2-3\times 10^{-28}$ e-cm, with anticipated systematic uncertainties below this level.

Novel experimental techniques are required to make the next big leap in neutron electric dipole moment experimental sensitivity, both in terms of statistics and systematic error control. The nEDM experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source (nEDM@SNS) will implement the scheme of Golub & Lamoreaux [Phys. Rep., 237, 1 (1994)]. The unique properties of combining polarized ultracold neutrons, polarized $^3$He, and superfluid $^4$He will be exploited to provide a sensitivity to $\sim 10^{-28}\,e{\rm \,\cdot\, cm}$. Our cryogenic apparatus will deploy two small ($3\,{\rm L}$) measurement cells with a high density of ultracold neutrons produced and spin analyzed in situ. The electric field strength, precession time, magnetic shielding, and detected UCN number will all be enhanced compared to previous room temperature Ramsey measurements. Our $^3$He co-magnetometer offers unique control of systematic effects, in particular the Bloch-Siegert induced false EDM. Furthermore, there will be two distinct measurement modes: free precession and dressed spin. This will provide an important self-check of our results. Following five years of "critical component demonstration," our collaboration transitioned to a "large scale integration" phase in 2018. We demonstrate that the observation of neutron stars with masses greater than one solar mass places severe demands on any exotic neutron decay mode that could explain the discrepancy between beam and bottle measurements of the neutron lifetime. If the neutron can decay to a stable, feebly-interacting dark fermion, the maximum possible mass of a neutron star is 0.7 solar masses, while all well-measured neutron star masses exceed one solar mass. The survival of $2 M_\odot$ neutron stars therefore indicates that any explanation beyond the Standard Model for the neutron lifetime puzzle requires dark matter to be part of a multi-particle dark sector with highly constrained interactions., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures. v2: relativistic corrections added, results shown for wider range of dark fermion masses, conclusions unchanged

The neutron, in addition to possibly having a permanent electric dipole moment as a consequence of violation of time-reversal invariance, develops an induced electric dipole moment in the presence of an external electric field. We present here a unified non-relativistic description of these two phenomena, in which the dipole moment operator, $\vec{\cal D}$, is not constrained to lie along the spin operator. Although the expectation value of $\vec{\cal D}$ in the neutron is less than $10^{-13}$ of the neutron radius, $r_n$, the expectation value of $\vec {\cal D}\,^2$ is of order $r_n^2$. We determine the spin motion in external electric and magnetic fields, as employed in past and future searches for a permanent dipole moment, and show that the neutron electric polarizability, although entering the neutron energy in an external electric field, does not affect the spin motion. In a simple non-relativistic model we show that the expectation value of the permanent dipole is, to lowest order, proportional to the product of the time reversal-violating coupling strength and the electric polarizability of the neutron.

We have constructed an apparatus to study DC electrical breakdown in liquid helium at temperatures as low as 0.4 K and at pressures between the saturated vapor pressure and $\sim$600 torr. The apparatus can house a set of electrodes that are 12 cm in diameter with a gap of $1-2$ cm between them, and a potential up to $\pm 50$ kV can be applied to each electrode. Initial results demonstrated that it is possible to apply fields exceeding 100 kV/cm in a 1 cm gap between two electropolished stainless steel electrodes 12 cm in diameter for a wide range of pressures at 0.4 K. We also measured the current between two electrodes. Our initial results, $I<1$ pA at 45 kV, correspond to a lower bound on the effective volume resistivity of LHe of $\rho_V > 5\times10^{18}$ $\Omega\cdot$cm. This lower bound is 5 times larger than the bound previously measured. We calculate the effect of a heat current on transporting $^3$He dissolved in superfluid $^4$He at ultralow concentration, as will be utilized in a proposed experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM). In this experiment, a phonon wind will generated to drive (partly depolarized) $^3$He down a long pipe. In the regime of $^3$He concentrations $\tilde < 10^{-9}$ and temperatures $\sim 0.5$ K, the phonons comprising the heat current are kept in a flowing local equilibrium by small angle phonon-phonon scattering, while they transfer momentum to the walls via the $^4$He first viscosity. On the other hand, the phonon wind drives the $^3$He out of local equilibrium via phonon-$^3$He scattering. For temperatures below $0.5$ K, both the phonon and $^3$He mean free paths can reach the centimeter scale, and we calculate the effects on the transport coefficients. We derive the relevant transport coefficients, the phonon thermal conductivity and the $^3$He diffusion constants from the Boltzmann equation. We calculate the effect of scattering from the walls of the pipe and show that it may be characterized by the average distance from points inside the pipe to the walls. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the $^3$He atoms is determined by the time dependent $^3$He diffusion equation, which describes the competition between advection by the phonon wind and $^3$He diffusion. As a consequence of the thermal diffusivity being small compared with the $^3$He diffusivity, the scale height of the final $^3$He distribution is much smaller than that of the temperature gradient. We present a magnetically shielded environment with a damping factor larger than one million at the mHz frequency regime and an extremely low field and gradient over an extended volume. This extraordinary shielding performance represents an improvement of the state of the art in damping the difficult regime of very low-frequency distortions by more than an order of magnitude. This technology enables a new generation of high precision measurements in fundamental physics and metrology, including searches for new physics far beyond the reach of accelerator-based experiments. We report microscopic calculations of the thermal conductivity, diffusion constant and thermal diffusion constant for classical solutions of $^3$He in superfluid $^4$He at temperatures $T \la 0.6$~K, where phonons are the dominant excitations of the $^4$He. We focus on solutions with $^3$He concentrations $\la \,10^{-3}$, for which the main scattering mechanisms are phonon-phonon scattering via 3-phonon Landau and Beliaev processes, which maintain the phonons in a drifting equilibrium distribution, and the slower process of $^3$He-phonon scattering, which is crucial for determining the $^3$He distribution function in transport. We use the fact that the relative changes in the energy and momentum of a $^3$He atom in a collision with a phonon are small to derive a Fokker-Planck equation for the $^3$He distribution function, which we show has an analytical solution in terms of Sonine polynomials. A new experiment to search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron is being developed for installation at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This experiment will be performed in liquid helium at ? 0:4 K and requires a large electric field (E ~ 75 kV/cm) to be applied in liquid helium. We have constructed a new HV test apparatus to study electric breakdown in liquid helium. Motivated by a proposed experimental search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) utilizing neutron-$^3$He capture in a dilute solution of $^3$He in superfluid $^4 $He, we derive the transport properties of dilute solutions in the regime where the $^3$He are classically distributed and rapid $^3$He-$^3$He scatterings keep the $^3$He in equilibrium. Our microscopic framework takes into account phonon-phonon, phonon-$^3$He, and $^3$He-$^3$He scatterings. We then apply these calculations to measurements by Rosenbaum et al. [J.Low Temp.Phys. {\bf 16}, 131 (1974)] and by Lamoreaux et al. [Europhys.Lett. {\bf 58}, 718 (2002)] of dilute solutions in the presence of a heat flow. We find satisfactory agreement of theory with the data, serving to confirm our understanding of the microscopics of the helium in the future nEDM experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, v2

The parity-violating asymmetry arising from inelastic electron-nucleon scattering at backward angle (~95 degrees) near the Delta(1232) resonance has been measured using a hydrogen target. From this asymmetry, we extracted the axial transition form factor G^A_{N\Delta}, a function of the axial Adler form factors C^A_i. Though G^A_{N\Delta} has been previously studied using charged current reactions, this is the first measurement of the weak neutral current excitation of the Delta using a proton target. For Q^2 = 0.34 (GeV/c)^2 and W = 1.18 GeV, the asymmetry was measured to be -33.4 \pm (5.3)_{stat} \pm (5.1)_{sys} ppm. The value of G^A_{N\Delta} determined from the hydrogen asymmetry was -0.05 \pm (0.35)_{stat} \pm (0.34)_{sys} \pm (0.06)_{theory}. These findings agree within errors with theoretical predictions for both the total asymmetry and the form factor. In addition to the hydrogen measurement, the asymmetry was measured at the same kinematics using a deuterium target. The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive $\pi^-$ production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasi-free photoproduction off the neutron via the $\Delta^0$ resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$\chi$PT), this asymmetry is related to a low energy constant $d_\Delta^-$ that characterizes the parity-violating $\gamma$N$\Delta$ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated $d_\Delta^-$ in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from $A_\gamma^-=-5.2$ to $+5.2$ ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to $A_\gamma^-=-0.36\pm 1.06\pm 0.37\pm 0.03$ ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to $V_{ud}/V_{us}$. The existence of electric dipole moments (EDM) for fundamental particles signals time-reversal symmetry (T) violation accompanied by violation of parity (P); only upper limits have been established to date. Time-reversal violation in turn implies CP violation under the assumption that CPT is a good symmetry. The neutron is an attractive system for an EDM search, both because it is neu- tral and because a neutron EDM would be relatively easier to interpret than the comparable quantity for a nucleus or even an atom. We introduce briefly the key experimental requirements for such search and describe some aspects of the neutron EDM experiment planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scattering from the neutron is made using a quasi-static deuterium approximation, and is also in agreement with theory.

In the G0 experiment, performed at Jefferson Lab, the parity-violating elastic scattering of electrons from protons and quasi-elastic scattering from deuterons is measured in order to determine the neutral weak currents of the nucleon. Asymmetries as small as 1 part per million in the scattering of a polarized electron beam are determined using a dedicated apparatus. It consists of specialized beam-monitoring and control systems, a cryogenic hydrogen (or deuterium) target, and a superconducting, toroidal magnetic spectrometer equipped with plastic scintillation and aerogel Cerenkov detectors, as well as fast readout electronics for the measurement of individual events. We report a measurement of the modification of the effective precession frequency of polarized 3He atoms in response to a dressing field in a room temperature cell. The 3He atoms were polarized using the metastability spin-exchange method. An oscillating dressing field is then applied perpendicular to the constant magnetic field. Modification of the 3He effective precession frequency was observed over a broad range of the amplitude and frequency of the dressing field. We report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q^2 < 5.5 GeV^2. The data have been used to accurately perform 167 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal / transverse separations. The precision R = sigma_L / sigma_T data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F_1 and F_L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant, both in magnitude and in the existence of defined mass peaks. Additionally, quark-hadron duality is here observed above Q^2 = 1 GeV^2 in the separated structure functions independently., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The measurement of parity violation in the helicity dependence of electron-nucleon scattering provides unique information about the basic quark structure of the nucleons. In this review, the general formalism of parity-violating electron scattering is presented, with emphasis on elastic electron-nucleon scattering. We review the area of strange quark contributions to nucleon structure. In particular, we focus on current models of strange quark vector currents in the nucleon and the associated parity-violating elastic electron scattering experiments from which vector- and axial-vector currents are extracted, Comment: 40 pages including 7 figures; review article to be published in Int. We report the first measurement of the vector analyzing power in inclusive transversely polarized elastic electron-proton scattering at Q^2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)^2 and large scattering angles. This quantity should vanish in the single virtual photon exchange, plane wave impulse approximation for this reaction, and can therefore provide information on double photon exchange amplitudes for electromagnetic interactions with hadronic systems. We find a non-zero value of A=-15.4+/-5.4 ppm. No calculations of this observable for nuclei other than spin 0 have been carried out in these kinematics, and the calculation using the spin orbit interaction from a charged point nucleus of spin 0 cannot describe these data., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. We report the development and implementation of an energy feedback system for the MIT/Bates Linear Accelerator Center. General requirements of the system are described, as are the specific requirements, features, and components of the system unique to its implementation at the Bates Laboratory. We demonstrate that with the system in operation, energy fluctuations correlated with the 60 Hz line voltage and with drifts of thermal origin are reduced by an order of magnitude.

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering from the proton. The asymmetry depends on the neutral weak magnetic form factor of the proton which contains new information on the contribution of strange quark-antiquark pairs to the magnetic moment of the proton. Parity-violating electron scattering measurements on hydrogen and deuterium, such as those underway at the Bates and CEBAF laboratories, require luminosities exceeding $10^{38}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, resulting in large beam power deposition into cryogenic liquid. Such targets must be able to absorb 500 watts or more with minimal change in target density. A 40~cm long liquid hydrogen target, designed to absorb 500~watts of beam power without boiling, has been developed for the SAMPLE experiment at Bates. In recent tests with 40~$\mu$A of incident beam, no evidence was seen for density fluctuations in the target, at a sensitivity level of better than 1\%. Recently, there has been considerable theoretical interest in determining strange quark contributions to hadronic matrix elements. Such matrix elements can be accessed through the nucleon's neutral weak form factors as determined in parity violating electron scattering. The SAMPLE experiment will measure the strange magnetic form factor $G_M^s$ at low momentum transfer. By combining measurements from hydrogen and deuterium the theoretical uncertainties in the measurement can be greatly reduced and the result will be limited by experimental errors only.
