Close to a saddle-node bifurcation, when two invariant solutions collide and disappear, the behavior of a dynamical system can closely resemble that of a solution which is no longer present at the chosen parameter value. For bifurcating equilibria in low-dimensional ODEs, the influence of such 'ghosts' on the temporal behavior of the system, namely delayed transitions, has been studied previously. We consider spatio-temporal PDEs and characterize the phenomenon of ghosts by defining representative state-space structures, which we term 'ghost states,' as minima of appropriately chosen cost functions. Using recently developed variational methods, we can compute and parametrically continue ghost states of equilibria, periodic orbits, and other invariant solutions. We demonstrate the relevance of ghost states to the observed dynamics in various nonlinear systems including chaotic maps, the Lorenz ODE system, the spatio-temporally chaotic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky PDE, the buckling of an elastic arc, and 3D Rayleigh-B\'enard convection.

Unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) are believed to be the underlying dynamical structures of spatio-temporal chaos and turbulence. Finding these UPOs is however notoriously difficult. Matrix-free loop convergence algorithms deform entire space-time fields (loops) until they satisfy the evolution equations. Initial guesses for these robust variational convergence algorithms are thus periodic space-time fields in a high-dimensional state space, rendering their generation highly challenging. Usually guesses are generated with recurrency methods, which are most suited to shorter and more stable periodic orbits. Here we propose an alternative, data-driven method for generating initial guesses: while the dimension of the space used to discretize fluid flows is prohibitively large to construct suitable initial guesses, the dissipative dynamics will collapse onto a chaotic attractor of far lower dimension. We use an autoencoder to obtain a low-dimensional representation of the discretized physical space for the one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinksy equation, in chaotic and hyperchaotic regimes. In this low-dimensional latent space, we construct loops based on the latent POD modes with random periodic coefficients, which are then decoded to physical space and used as initial guesses. These loops are found to be realistic initial guesses and, together with variational convergence algorithms, these guesses help us to quickly converge to UPOs. We further attempt to 'glue' known UPOs in the latent space to create guesses for longer ones. This gluing procedure is successful and points towards a hierarchy of UPOs where longer UPOs shadow sequences of shorter ones.

The Birman-Williams theorem gives a connection between the collection of unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) contained within a chaotic attractor and the topology of that attractor, for three-dimensional systems. In certain cases, the fractal dimension of a chaotic attractor in a partial differential equation (PDE) is less than three, even though that attractor is embedded within an infinite-dimensional space. Here we study the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky PDE at the onset of chaos. We use two different dimensionality-reduction techniques -- proper orthogonal decomposition and an autoencoder neural network -- to find two different mappings of the chaotic attractor into three dimensions. By finding the image of the attractor's UPOs in these reduced spaces and examining their linking numbers, we construct templates for the branched manifold which encodes the topological properties of the attractor. The templates obtained using two different dimensionality reduction methods are equivalent. The organization of the periodic orbits is identical and consistent symbolic sequences for low-period UPOs are derived. While this is not a formal mathematical proof, this agreement is strong evidence that the dimensional reduction is robust, in this case, and that an accurate topological characterization of the chaotic attractor of the chaotic PDE has been achieved., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Surface porosity has been found to be an important property for small bodies. Some asteroids and comets can exhibit an extremely high surface porosity in the first millimeter layer. This layer may be produced by various processes and maintained by the lack of an atmosphere. However, the influence of porosity on the spectro-photometric properties of small body surfaces is not yet fully understood. In this study, we looked into the effect of porosity on the spectro-photometric properties of Phobos regolith spectroscopic simulants; created by mixing the simulants with ultra-pure water, producing ice-dust particles, and then sublimating the water. The reflectance spectroscopic properties in the visible and near-infrared (0.5-4.2 $\mu$m) show no strong variations between the porous and compact samples. However, one simulant exhibits a bluing of the slope after increasing porosity, providing possible insights into the differences between the blue and red units observed on Phobos. In the mid-infrared range, a contrast increase of the 10-$\mu$m emissivity plateau due to silicates is observed. Photometry reveals a modification in the phase reddening behavior between the compact powder and the sublimation residue for both simulants. However, the observed behavior is different between the simulants, suggesting that the phase reddening may be dependent on the composition of the simulants. The phase curve also appears to be modified by the addition of porosity, with a higher contribution of forward scattering observed for the sublimation residue. The derivation of the Hapke parameters indicates an increase in roughness for the porous sample, but no significant modification of the opposition effect. Previous observations of Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars, have improved our understanding of these small bodies. However, their formation and composition remain poorly constrained. Physical and spectral properties suggest that Phobos may be a weakly thermal-altered captured asteroid but the dynamical properties of the martian system suggest a formation by giant collision similar to the Earth moon. In 2027, the JAXA's MMX mission aims to address these outstanding questions. We undertook measurements with a new simulant called OPPS (Observatory of Paris Phobos Simulant) which closely matches Phobos spectra in the visible to the mid-infrared range. The simulant was synthesized using a mixture of olivine, saponite, anthracite, and coal. Since observation geometry is a crucial aspect of planetary surface remote sensing exploration, we evaluated the parameters obtained by modeling the phase curves -- obtained through laboratory measurements -- of two different Phobos simulants (UTPS-TB and OPPS) using Hapke IMSA model. Our results show that the photometric properties of Phobos simulants are not fully consistent with those of Tagish Lake, Allende, or the NWA 4766 shergottite. We also investigated the detection of volatiles/organic compounds and hydrated minerals, as the presence of such components is expected on Phobos in the hypothesis of a captured primitive asteroid. The results indicate that a significant amount of organic compounds is required for the detection of C-H bands at 3.4 $\mu$m. In contrast, the 2.7 $\mu$m absorption band, due to hydrated minerals, is much deeper and easier to detect than C-H organic features at the same concentration levels. Extreme adaptive optics instruments have revealed exquisite details on debris discs, allowing to extract the optical properties of the dust particles such as the phase function, the degree of polarisation and the spectral reflectance. These are three powerful diagnostic tools to understand the physical properties of the dust : the size, shape and composition of the dust particles. This can inform us on the population of parent bodies, also called planetesimals, which generate those particles through collisions. It is however very rare to be able to combine all those three observables for the same system, as this requires different high-contrast imaging techniques to suppress the starlight and reveal the faint scattered light emission from the dust. Due to its brightness, the ring detected around the A-type star HR 4796 is a notable exception, with both unpolarised and polarised images covering near-infrared wavelengths. Here, we show how measurements of dust particles in the laboratory can reproduce the observed near-infrared photo-polarimetric properties of the HR 4796 disc. The nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko exhibits a broad spectral reflectance feature around 3.2 $\mu$m, which is omnipresent in all spectra of the surface, and whose attribution has remained elusive since its discovery. Based on laboratory experiments, we have shown that most of this absorption feature is due to ammonium (NH4+) salts mixed with the dark surface material. The depth of the band is compatible with semi-volatile ammonium salts being a major reservoir of nitrogen in the comet, which could dominate over refractory organic matter and volatile species. These salts may thus represent the long-sought reservoir of nitrogen in comets, possibly bringing their nitrogen-to-carbon ratio in agreement with the solar value. Moreover, the reflectance spectra of several asteroids are compatible with the presence of NH4+ salts at their surfaces. The presence of such salts, and other NH4+-bearing compounds on asteroids, comets, and possibly in proto-stellar environments, suggests that NH4+ may be a tracer of the incorporation and transformation of nitrogen in ices, minerals and organics, at different phases of the formation of the Solar System.

K- and L-type asteroids are considered to be the parent bodies of CV and CO chondrites. Spectral models of L-types invoke an enrichment in CAI with respect to the chondrites in the meteorite collection. Barbarian asteroids are associated to L-type asteroids yet the relationship between these populations is still not clear. We aim to investigate the link between the K- and L-type and Barbarian asteroids and the CV and CO chondrites by means of spectral matching of a large number of reflectance spectra of objects from either population. We seek to identify matches based on observed rather than modelled spectral features. We employ a matching criterion that accounts for the residuals and the correlation of the spectral features. The only free parameter in the comparison is the degree of alteration of the asteroids with respect to the meteorites expressed via an exponential model. We derive an absolute scale of similarity between the spectra using laboratory data from irradiation experiments. CVOxA chondrites are the best match to the asteroids, in particular to K-type (7 out of 11 asteroids matched) and Barbarians (11 out of 16). CO chondrites provide convincing matches for K-types (5 out of 11) and Barbarians (7 out of 16) as well. A single non-Barbarian L-type is matched to a meteorite. Only a few asteroids are matched to CVOxB and CVRed chondrites. Barbarian asteroids are represented among CO and CVOxA chondrites without requiring an enrichment of CAI in the asteroids. Four candidate Barbarian asteroids are identified, three of which are classified as K-types. These asteroids are favourable targets for polarimetric observations. The discrepancy between L-type asteroids and CV and CO chondrites is likely related to the ambiguity of the asteroid class itself. There are various indications that the most primitive small bodies (P, D-type asteroids, comets) have surfaces made of intimate mixtures of opaque minerals and other components (silicates, carbonaceous compounds, etc.) in the form of sub-micrometre-sized grains, smaller than the wavelength at which they are observed, so-called hyperfine grains. Here, we investigate how the Vis-NIR-MIR spectral and V-band polarimetric properties of surfaces made of hyperfine grains are influenced by the relative abundance of such hyperfine materials, having strongly different optical indexes. Mixtures of grains of olivine and iron sulfide (or anthracite), as analogues of silicates and opaque minerals present on small bodies, were prepared at different proportions. The measurements reveal that these mixtures of hyperfine grains have spectral and polarimetric Vis-NIR properties varying in strongly nonlinear ways. When present at even a few percent, opaque components dominate the Vis-NIR spectral and polarimetric properties, and mask the silicate bands at these wavelengths. The Vis-NIR spectral slope ranges from red (positive slope), for pure opaque material, to blue (negative slope) as the proportion of silicates increases, which is reminiscent of the range of spectral slopes observed on P, D, X, C- and B-types asteroids. The spectra of the darkest mixtures in the Vis-NIR exhibit the absorption bands of Si-O in olivine around 10 m in the MIR, which is observed in emission for several small bodies. This work shows that both the contrasted optical indexes of the components, and the dispersion or aggregation (depending on their relative proportions) of their hyperfine grains, induce different light scattering regimes in the Vis-NIR and MIR, as observed for primitive small bodies. This chapter reviews for each province and destination of the Solar System the representative space missions that will have to be designed and implemented by 2061 to address the six key science questions about the diversity, origins, workings and habitability of planetary systems (described in chapter 1) and to perform the critical observations that have been described in chapters 3 and partly 2. This chapter of the Planetary Exploration Horizon 2061 Report reviews the way the six key questions about planetary systems, from their origins to the way they work and their habitability, identified in chapter 1, can be addressed by means of solar system exploration, and how one can find partial answers to these six questions by flying to the different provinces to the solar system: terrestrial planets, giant planets, small bodies, and up to its interface with the local interstellar medium. It derives from this analysis a synthetic description of the most important space observations to be performed at the different solar system objects by future planetary exploration missions. These observation requirements illustrate the diversity of measurement techniques to be used as well as the diversity of destinations where these observations must be made. They constitute the base for the identification of the future planetary missions we need to fly by 2061, which are described in chapter 4. We examine the observed properties of the Nili Fossae olivine-clay-carbonate lithology from orbital data and in situ by the Mars 2020 rover at the S\'e\'itah unit in Jezero crater, including: 1) composition (Liu, 2022) 2) grain size (Tice, 2022) 3) inferred viscosity (calculated based on geochemistry collected by SuperCam (Wiens, 2022)). Based on the low viscosity and distribution of the unit we postulate a flood lava origin for the olivine-clay-carbonate at S\'e\'itah. We include a new CRISM map of the clay 2.38 {\mu}m band and use in situ data to show that the clay in the olivine cumulate in the S\'e\'itah formation is consistent with talc or serpentine from Mars 2020 SuperCam LIBS and VISIR and MastCam-Z observations. We discuss two intertwining aspects of the history of the lithology: 1) the emplacement and properties of the cumulate layer within a lava lake, based on terrestrial analogs in the Pilbara, Western Australia, and using previously published models of flood lavas and lava lakes, and 2) the limited extent of post emplacement alteration, including clay and carbonate alteration (Clave, 2022; Mandon, 2022)., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures

Meteorite matrices from primitive chondrites are an interplay of ingredients at the sub-micron scale, which requires analytical techniques with the nanometer spatial resolution to decipher the composition of individual components in their petrographic context. Infrared spectroscopy is an effective method that enables to probe of vibrations at the molecule-atomic scale of organic and inorganic compounds but is often limited to a few micrometers in spatial resolution. To efficiently distinguish spectral signatures of the different constituents, we apply here nano-IR spectroscopy (AFM-IR), based on the combination of infrared and atomic force microscopy, having a spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limits. Our study aims to characterize two chosen meteorite samples to investigate primitive material in terms of bulk chemistry (the CI chondrite Orgueil) and organic composition (the CR chondrite EET 92042). We confirm that this technique allows unmixing the IR signatures of organics and minerals to assess the variability of organic structure within these samples. We report an investigation of the impact of the widely used chemical HF/HCl (Hydrogen Fluoride/Hydrochloric) extraction on the nature of refractory organics (Insoluble Organic Matter, IOM) and provide insights on the mineralogy of meteorites matrices from these two samples by comparing to reference (extra)terrestrial materials. These findings are discussed with a perspective toward understanding the impact of post-accretional aqueous alteration and thermal metamorphism on the composition of chondrites. Last, we highlight that the heterogeneity of organic matter within meteoritic materials extends down to the nanoscale, and by comparison with IOMs, oxygenated chemical groups are not affected by acid extractions.

Miller Range (MIL) 07687 is a peculiar carbonaceous chondrite officially classified as a CO3. However, it has been found to display unique petrographic properties that are atypical of this group. Moreover, Raman spectra of its polyaromatic carbonaceous matter does not reflect a structural order consistent with the metamorphic history of a type 3 chondrite. As a result, it has been suggested to be an ungrouped C2 chondrite with CO affinities, although it has not been fully excluded as a CO chondrite. The ambiguity of the meteorite classification is the motivation behind the present study. We conclude that MIL 07687 is a unique carbonaceous chondrite with possible affinities to CO, CM and/or some ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites. The difficulty in classifying this meteorite stems from (i) its heavily weathered nature, which interferes with the interpretation of our oxygen (O-)isotopic measurements (ii) the overlap in the petrographic and O-isotopic descriptions of various COs, CMs and ungrouped meteorites in the Meteoritical society database. Optical and infrared spectra are consistent with the meteorite unequilibrated nature and indicate that it is probably mildly aqueously altered. Despite traces of aqueous alteration having previously been described in MIL 07687, this is the first time that the presence of hydrated amorphous silicates is reported. In fact, our results show that its present hydration is beyond that of most CO3s, less than most CM2s, and comparable to primitive CR2s. Consequently, we support the meteorite s C2 ung label, although a CO2 or CM2 classification cannot be fully excluded.

In the next decade, two rovers will characterize in situ the mineralogy of rocks on Mars, using for the first time near-infrared reflectance spectrometers: SuperCam onboard the Mars 2020 rover and MicrOmega onboard the ExoMars rover, although this technique is predominantly used in orbit for mineralogical investigations. Until successful completion of sample-return missions from Mars, Martian meteorites are currently the only samples of the red planet available for study in terrestrial laboratories and comparison with in situ data. However, the current spectral database available for these samples does not represent their diversity and consists primarily of spectra acquired on finely crushed samples, albeit grain size is known to greatly affect spectral features. We measured the reflected light of a broad Martian meteorite suite as a means to catalogue and characterize their spectra between 0.4 and 3 microns. These measurements are achieved using a point spectrometer acquiring data comparable to SuperCam, and an imaging spectrometer producing hyperspectral cubes similarly to MicrOmega. Our results indicate that point spectrometry is sufficient to discriminate the different Martian meteorites families, to identify their primary petrology based on band parameters, and to detect their low content in alteration minerals. However, significant spectral mixing occurs in the point measurements, even at spot sizes down to a few millimeters, and imaging spectroscopy is needed to correctly identify the various mineral phases in the meteorites. Bidirectional spectral measurements confirm their non-Lambertian behavior, with backward and suspected forward scattering peaks. With changing observation geometry, the main absorption strengths show variations up to 10-15 percents. All the spectra presented are provided in the supplementary data for further comparison with in situ and orbital measurements.

Biologically relevant abiotic extraterrestrial soluble organic matter (SOM) has been widely investigated to study the origin of life and the chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks. Synthesis of biologically relevant organics, in particular, seems to require aqueous environments in the early solar system. However, SOM in primitive meteorites includes numerous chemical species besides the biologically relevant ones, and the reaction mechanisms that comprehensively explain the complex nature of SOM are unknown. Besides, the initial reactants, which formed before asteroid accretion, were uncharacterized. We examined the mass distribution of SOM extracted from three distinct Tagish Lake meteorite fragments, which exhibit different degrees of aqueous alteration though they originated from a single asteroid. We report that mass distributions of SOM in the primordial fragments are well fit by the SchulzZimm (SZ) model for the molecular weight distribution patterns found in chain growth polymerization experiments. Also, the distribution patterns diverge further from SZ with increasing degrees of aqueous alteration. These observations imply that the complex nature of the primordial SOM (1) was established before severe alteration on the asteroid, (2) possibly existed before parent-body accretion, and (3) later became simplified on the asteroid. Therefore, aqueous reactions on asteroids are not required conditions for cultivating complex SOM. Furthermore, we found that overall H over C ratios of SOM decrease with increasing aqueous alteration, and the estimate of H loss from the SOM is 10% to 30%. We present the Infrared spectrometer of SuperCam Instrument Suite that enables the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover to study remotely the Martian mineralogy within the Jezero crater. The SuperCam IR spectrometer is designed to acquire spectra in the 1.3-2.6 $\mu$m domain at a spectral resolution ranging from 5 to 20~nm. The field-of-view of 1.15 mrad, is coaligned with the boresights of the other remote-sensing techniques provided by SuperCam: laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible reflectance spectroscopy, and micro-imaging. The IR spectra can be acquired from the robotic-arm workspace to long-distances, in order to explore the mineralogical diversity of the Jezero crater, guide the Perseverance Rover in its sampling task, and to document the samples' environment. The age of iron meteorites implies that accretion of protoplanets began during the first millions of years of the solar system. Due to the heat generated by 26Al decay, many early protoplanets were fully differentiated with an igneous crust produced during the cooling of a magma ocean and the segregation at depth of a metallic core. The formation and nature of the primordial crust generated during the early stages of melting is poorly understood, due in part to the scarcity of available samples. The newly discovered meteorite Erg Chech 002 (EC 002) originates from one such primitive igneous crust and has an andesite bulk composition. It derives from the partial melting of a noncarbonaceous chondritic reservoir, with no depletion in alkalis relative to the Sun photosphere and at a high degree of melting of around 25 percents. Moreover, EC 002 is, to date, the oldest known piece of an igneous crust with a 26Al-26Mg crystallization age of 4,565.0 million years (My). Partial melting took place at 1,220 C up to several hundred kyr before, implying an accretion of the EC 002 parent body ca. 4,566 My ago. Protoplanets covered by andesitic crusts were probably frequent. However, no asteroid shares the spectral features of EC 002, indicating that almost all of these bodies have disappeared, either because they went on to form the building blocks of larger bodies or planets or were simply destroyed.

Although spectral surveys and spacecraft missions provide information on small bodies, many important analyses can only be performed in terrestrial laboratories. For now, the total number of parent bodies represented in our meteorites collection is estimated to about 150 parent bodies, of which 50 parent bodies represented by the poorly studied ungrouped chondrites. Linking ungrouped meteorites to their parent bodies is thus crucial to significantly increase our knowledge of asteroids. To this end, the petrography of 25 ungrouped chondrites and rare meteorite groups was studied, allowing grouping into 6 petrographic groups based on texture, mineralogy, and aqueous and thermal parent body processing. Then, we acquired visible-near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy data, in order to compare them to ground-based telescopic observations of asteroids. The reflectance spectra of meteorites were obtained on powdered samples, raw samples and polished sections. Our results showed that sample preparation influences the shape of the spectra, and thus asteroid spectral matching, especially for carbonaceous chondrites. Overall, the petrographic groups defined initially coincide with reflectance spectral groups. We define links between some of the studied ungrouped chondrites and asteroid types that had no meteorite connection proposed before, such as some very primitive type 3.00 ungrouped chondrites to B-type or Cg-type asteroids. We also matched metamorphosed ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites to S-complex asteroids, suggesting that this complex is not only composed of ordinary chondrites or primitive achondrites, as previously established, but may also host carbonaceous chondrites. Conversely, some ungrouped chondrites could not be matched to any known asteroid type, showing that those are potential samples from yet unidentified asteroid types.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey provides colors for more than 100 000 moving objects, among which around 10 000 have albedos determined. Here we combined colors and albedo in order to perform a cluster analysis on the small bodies population, and identify a C-cluster, a group of asteroid related to C-type as defined in earlier work. Members of this C-cluster are in fair agreement with the color boundaries of B and C-type defined in DeMeo and Carry (2013). We then compare colors of C-cluster asteroids to those of carbonaceous chondrites powders, while taking into account the effect of phase angle. We show that only CM chondrites have colors in the range of C-cluster asteroids, CO, CR and CV chondrites being significantly redder. Also, CM chondrites powders are on average slightly redder than the average C-cluster. The colors of C-cluster members are further investigated by looking at color variations as a function of asteroid diameter. We observe that the visible slope becomes bluer with decreasing asteroids diameter, and a transition seems to be present around 20 km. We discuss the origin of this variation and, if not related to a bias in the dataset - analysis, we conclude that it is related to the surface texture of the objects, smaller objects being covered by rocks, while larger objects are covered by a particulate surface. The blueing is interpreted by an increased contribution of the first reflection in the case of rock-dominated surfaces, which can scatter light in a Rayleigh-like manner. We do not have unambiguous evidence of space weathering within the C-cluster based on this analysis, however the generally bluer nature of C-cluster objects compared to CM chondrites could be to some extent related to space weathering.

Mars northern polar latitudes are known to harbor an enhanced 3 ${\mu}$m spectral signature when observed from orbit. This may indicate a greater amount of surface adsorbed or bound water, although it has not yet been possible to easily reconcile orbital observations with ground measurements by Phoenix. Here we re-analyzed OMEGA/Mars Express observations acquired during the Northern summer to further characterize this 3 ${\mu}$m absorption band increase. We identify the presence of a new specific spectral signature composed of an additional narrow absorption feature centered at 3.03 ${\mu}$m coupled with an absorption at ${\lambda}$ ${\geq}$ 3.8 ${\mu}$m. This signature is homogeneously distributed over a high-albedo open ring surrounding the circumpolar low-albedo terrains between ~ 68{\deg}N and 76{\deg}N and ~ 0{\deg}E and 270{\deg}E. This location includes the Phoenix landing site. This feature shows no time variability and can be confidently attributed to a seasonally stable surface component. All together, the stability, spectral shape and absence of significant correlation with other signatures in the 1 $-$ 2.5 ${\mu}$m range discard interpretations relying on water ice or easily exchangeable adsorbed water. Sulfates, notably anhydrite, provide interesting comparisons to several sections of the spectrum. Analogies with Earth samples also show that the spectral signature could result from a latitudinal modification of the hydration state and/or grains size of salts contaminants. While the exact full spectral shape cannot be easily reproduced, plausible explanations to this observation seem to involve geologically recent water alteration at high northern latitudes., Comment: Submitted to Icarus

Recently published space-based observations of main-belt asteroids with the AKARI telescope provide a full description of the 3 {\mu}m band, related to the presence of OH bearing minerals. Here, we use laboratory spectra of carbonaceous chondrites obtained under controlled atmosphere (CI,CM,CO,CV,CR Tagish Lake) to derive spectral metrics related to the water content in the samples. After testing several spectral metrics, we use a combination of band depth at 2.75 {\mu}m and 2.80 {\mu}m that shows a correlation with [H2O] in the sample determined by TGA, though with a high uncertainty (4 wt% H2O). This relation is used to determine water content at the surface of large C-complex main-belt asteroids and discuss the origin of the variability found. On average C-complex Main-Belt Asteroids (MBA) have water contents of 4.5 wt% (volume average, (1) Ceres excluded), significantly lower than average CM chondrites. The estimated water content for the most hydrated asteroids are lower than those of the most hydrated meteorites, a difference that could be attributed to space-weathering. An anti-correlation is also present between water content and overall spectral slope, which is opposite to expectation from laboratory simulations of space weathering on dark carbonaceous chondrites. This suggests that part of the variability in the surface hydration among the different C-complex asteroids is not due to space-weathering, but to the composition of surface material. When applied to Ceres, the hygrometer presented in this work enables us to estimate that at least 1.22 wt% of the hydrogen is present in the form of organics. This richness in organics strengthens the connection between Ceres and cometary materials.

The composition of Solar System surfaces can be inferred through reflectance and emission spectroscopy, by comparing these observations to laboratory measurements and radiative transfer models. While several populations of objects appear to be covered by sub-micrometre sized particles (referred to as hyperfine), there are limited studies on reflectance and emission of particulate surfaces composed of particles smaller than the visible and infrared wavelengths. We have undertaken an effort to determine the reflectance of hyperfine particulate surfaces in conjunction with high-porosity, in order to simulate the physical state of cometary surfaces and their related asteroids (P- and D-types). In this work, we present a technique developed to produce hyperfine particles of astrophysical relevant materials. Hyperfine powders were prepared and measured in reflectance in the 0.4-2.6 micrometer range. These powders were then included in water ice particles, sublimated under vacuum, in order to produce a hyperporous sample of hyperfine material. When grinded below one micrometre, the four materials studied (olivine, smectite, pyroxene and amorphous silica), show strong decrease of their absorption features together with a blueing of the spectra. This small grain degeneracy implies that surfaces covered by hyperfine grains should show only shallow absorption features if any. These two effects, decrease of band depth and spectral blueing, appear magnified when the grains are incorporated in the hyperporous residue. We interpret the distinct behaviour between hyperporous and more compact surfaces by the distancing of individual grains and a decrease in the size of the elemental scatterers. This work implies that hyperfine grains are unabundant at the surfaces of S- or V-type asteroids, and that the blue nature of B-type may be related to a physical effect rather than a compositional effect.

Non-differentiated asteroids are among the most primitive objects in our Solar System, having escaped intense heating mechanisms. To help us understand the information contained in reflectance spectra measured on asteroids, we analyzed meteorites in the laboratory. We present an in-depth analysis of a large set of reflectance spectra: 23 CV3, 15 CO3, 4 CR2 and 31 Unequilibrated Ordinary Chondrites (UOCs). Each of the samples has a well characterized thermal history . Variations in the reflectance spectra are observed between and within each chondrite group. UOCs systematically exhibit deeper absorption features, distinguishing them from carbonaceous chondrites. The CR2 samples presented in this study are easily distinguished from type 3 chondrites by exhibiting the 1 {\mu}m band at lower wavelengths. CV and CO chondrites exhibit comparable mineralogical compositions and can, therefore, not be distinguished solely based on their spectral features. In the case of CV chondrites, the 1 {\mu}m band depth increases with increasing metamorphic grade, while among CO chondrites, the spectra exhibit increasing visual slopes. By comparing the chondrite spectra with the spectra of various end member asteroids we are able to suggest several possible genetic links to the studied chondrites.

Carbonaceous chondrites are often considered potential contributors of water and other volatiles to terrestrial planets as most of them contain significant amounts of hydrous mineral phases. As such, carbonaceous chondrites are candidate building blocks for Earth, and elucidating their thermal histories is of direct important for understanding the volatile element history of Earth and the terrestrial planets. A significant fraction of CM type carbonaceous chondrites are thermally metamorphosed or heated and have lost part of their water content. The origin and the timing of such heating events are still debated, as they could have occurred either in the first Myrs of the Solar System via short-lived radioactive heating, or later by impact induced heating and or solar radiation. Since Rb is more volatile than Sr, and some heated CM chondrites are highly depleted in Rb, a dating system based on the radioactive decay of 87Rb to 87Sr could be used to date the heating event relating to the fractionation of Rb and Sr. Here, we have leveraged the 87Rb 87Sr system to date the heating of five CM chondrites (PCA 02012, PCA 02010, PCA 91008, QUE 93005 and MIL 07675). We find that the heating events of all five meteorites occurred at least 3 Ga after the formation of the Solar System. Such timing excludes short-lived radioactive heating as the origin of thermal metamorphism in these meteorites, and relates such heating events to ages of collisional families of C-type asteroids.

The reflectance of a particulate surface depends on the phase angle at which it is observed. This is true for laboratory measurements on powders of natural materials as well as remote observations of Solar System surfaces. Here, we measured the dependences of reflectance spectra with phase angles, of a suite of 72 meteorites in the 400-2600 nm range. The 10-30{\deg} phase angle range is investigated in order to study the contribution of Shadow Hiding Opposition Effect to the phase behavior. The behavior is then extrapolated to phase angle of 0{\deg} using a polynomial fit, in order to provide grounds for comparison across meteorite groups (enabling to remove the contribution of shadows to reflectance) as well as to provide equivalent albedo values that should be comparable to geometric albedo values derived for small bodies. We find a general behavior of increasing strength of the SHOE with lower reflectance values (whether between samples or for a given samples with absorption features). This trend provides a first order way to correct any reflectance spectra of meteorite powders measured under standard conditions (g=30) from the contribution of shadows. The g=0 degre calculated reflectance and equivalent albedos are then compared to typical values of albedos for main-belt asteroids. This reveals that among carbonaceous chondrites only Tagish Lake group, CI, and CM chondrites have equivalent albedo compatible with C- and D-type asteroids. On the other hand equivalent albedo derived with CO, CR and CK chondrites are compatible with L- and K-type asteroids. The equivalent albedo derived for ordinary chondrites is related to petrographic types, with low-grade petrographic type (type 3.6 and less) being generally darker that higher petrographic types. This works provides a framework for further understanding of the asteroids meteorite linkage when combining with colors and spectroscopy.

The goal of Project GAUSS is to return samples from the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the most accessible ocean world candidate and the largest reservoir of water in the inner solar system. It shows active cryovolcanism and hydrothermal activities in recent history that resulted in minerals not found in any other planets to date except for Earth's upper crust. The possible occurrence of recent subsurface ocean on Ceres and the complex geochemistry suggest possible past habitability and even the potential for ongoing habitability. Aiming to answer a broad spectrum of questions about the origin and evolution of Ceres and its potential habitability, GAUSS will return samples from this possible ocean world for the first time. The project will address the following top-level scientific questions: 1) What is the origin of Ceres and the origin and transfer of water and other volatiles in the inner solar system? 2) What are the physical properties and internal structure of Ceres? What do they tell us about the evolutionary and aqueous alteration history of icy dwarf planets? 3) What are the astrobiological implications of Ceres? Was it habitable in the past and is it still today? 4) What are the mineralogical connections between Ceres and our current collections of primitive meteorites? GAUSS will first perform a high-resolution global remote sensing investigation, characterizing the geophysical and geochemical properties of Ceres. Candidate sampling sites will then be identified, and observation campaigns will be run for an in-depth assessment of the candidate sites. In keeping with the Luxembourg government's initiative to support the future use of space resources, ASIME 2018 was held in Belval, Luxembourg on April 16-17, 2018. The goal of ASIME 2018: Asteroid Intersections with Mine Engineering, was to focus on asteroid composition for advancing the asteroid in-space resource utilisation domain. What do we know about asteroid composition from remote-sensing observations? What are the potential caveats in the interpretation of Earth-based spectral observations? What are the next steps to improve our knowledge on asteroid composition by means of ground-based and space-based observations and asteroid rendez-vous and sample return missions? How can asteroid mining companies use this knowledge? ASIME 2018 was a two-day workshop of almost 70 scientists and engineers in the context of the engineering needs of space missions with in-space asteroid utilisation. The 21 Questions from the asteroid mining companies were sorted into the four asteroid science themes: 1) Potential Targets, 2) Asteroid-Meteorite Links, 3) In-Situ Measurements and 4) Laboratory Measurements. The Answers to those Questions were provided by the scientists with their conference presentations and collected by A. Graps or edited directly into an open-access collaborative Google document or inserted by A. Graps using additional reference materials. During the ASIME 2018, first day and second day Wrap-Ups, the answers to the questions were discussed further. Laboratory spectral measurements of relevant analogue materials were performed in the framework of the Rosetta mission in order to explain the surface spectral properties of comet 67P. Fine powders of coal, iron sulphides, silicates and their mixtures were prepared and their spectra measured in the Vis-IR range. These spectra are compared to a reference spectrum of 67P nucleus obtained with the VIRTIS/Rosetta instrument up to 2.7 {\mu}m, excluding the organics band centred at 3.2 {\mu}m. The species used are known to be chemical analogues for cometary materials which could be present at the surface of 67P. Grain sizes of the powders range from tens of nanometres to hundreds of micrometres. Some of the mixtures studied here actually reach the very low reflectance level observed by VIRTIS on 67P. The best match is provided by a mixture of sub-micron coal, pyrrhotite, and silicates. Grain sizes are in agreement with the sizes of the dust particles detected by the GIADA, MIDAS and COSIMA instruments on board Rosetta. The coal used in the experiment is responsible for the spectral slope in the visible and infrared ranges. Pyrrhotite, which is strongly absorbing, is responsible for the low albedo observed in the NIR. The darkest components dominate the spectra, especially within intimate mixtures. Depending on sample preparation, pyrrhotite can coat the coal and silicate aggregates. Such coating effects can affect the spectra as much as particle size. Carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) may have been the carriers of water, volatile and moderately volatile elements to Earth. Investigating the abundances of these elements, their relative volatility, and isotopes of state-change tracer elements such as Zn, and linking these observations to water contents, provide vital information on the processes that govern the abundances and isotopic signatures of these species in CCs and other planetary bodies. Here we report Zn isotopic data for 28 CCs (20 CM, 6 CR, 1 C2-ung, and 1 CV3), as well as trace element data for Zn, In, Sn, Tl, Pb, and Bi in 16 samples (8 CM, 6 CR, 1 C2-ung, and 1 CV3), that display a range of elemental abundances from case-normative to intensely depleted. We use these data, water content data from literature and Zn isotopes to investigate volatile depletions and to discern between closed and open system heating. Trace element data have been used to construct relative volatility scales among the elements for the CM and CR chondrites. From least volatile to most, the scale in CM chondrites is Pb-Sn-Bi-In-Zn-Tl, and for CR chondrites it is Tl-Zn-Sn-Pb-Bi-In. These observations suggest that heated CM and CR chondrites underwent volatile loss under different conditions to one another and to that of the solar nebula, e.g. differing oxygen fugacities. Furthermore, the most water and volatile depleted samples are highly enriched in the heavy isotopes of Zn. Taken together, these lines of evidence strongly indicate that heated CM and CR chondrites incurred open system heating, stripping them of water and volatiles concomitantly, during post-accretionary shock impact(s)., Comment: 4 tables, 5 figures

Northwest Africa (NWA) 5958 is a carbonaceous chondrite found in Morocco in 2009. Preliminary chemical and isotopic data leading to its initial classification as C3.0 ungrouped have prompted us to conduct a multi-technique study of this meteorite and present a general description here. The petrography and chemistry of NWA 5958 is most similar to a CM chondrite, with a low degree of aqueous alteration, apparently under oxidizing conditions, and evidence of a second, limited alteration episode manifested by alteration fronts. The oxygen isotopic composition, with $\Delta^{17}$O = -4.3 $\permil$, is more 16O-rich than all CM chondrites, indicating, along with other compositional arguments, a separate parent body of origin. We suggest that NWA 5958 be reclassified as an ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite related to the CM group., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures
