Abstract

General Electric has developed a new method for altering turbine-generator power train torsional modes by using a torsional dynamic tuner. Torsional modes are the most difficult vibration problem for which to identify the vibration's source and solution. How the torsional dynamic tuner restrained the torsional vibration is also discussed.

Abstract

The article discusses the methods to reduce the torsional dynamics in rotating equipment power trains found in a power plant. It is mentioned that torsional vibration easily affects high-inertia power trains. It is stated that a full dynamics study is required before implementing aftermarket modifications that could significantly affect torsional dynamics. The article notifies that direct modification of the torsional stiffness is the traditional method to detune the natural frequencies.
