The article offers information on a conservation project being undertaken by biologists for the St. Francis' satyr, an endangered species that lives only in artillery impact zones at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. It explains how the forest riddled with bombs and bullets is the perfect habitat for this species to live. Information is also provided on the discovery of a subspecies of St. Francis satyr.

Abstract

The article reports on pervious concrete which restores hydrologic function to the landscape. The pavement is made of a cement-like binding material devoid of sand- or silt-sized particles that are used in traditional concrete. It is noted that the pavement allows rainwater to infiltrate native soils below the pavement, which can counter the negative impact of urban development on natural ecosystems. Its benefits include filtering pollutants and restoring water flows.
