We present an analysis of the rest-frame optical ($\lambda \simeq 3100-5600 \,$\r{A}) spectrum of a $\mathrm{log}_{10}(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 8.6$ star-forming galaxy at $z=8.271$ (EXCELS-63107) from JWST/NIRSpec medium-resolution observations taken as part of the EXCELS survey. EXCELS-63107 is a compact object consistent with the size of local star-forming cluster complexes ($r_e < 200 \, \rm{pc}$) and has an extremely steep UV continuum measured from JWST/NIRCam photometry ($\beta=-3.3\pm0.3$). The JWST/NIRSpec G395M spectrum of EXCELS-63107 is notable for its strong [OIII]$\lambda4363$ auroral-line emission relative to the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ forbidden line. Via a detailed emission-line and photoionization-modelling analysis, we find that the the observed properties of EXCELS-63107 are consistent with the presence of an ionizing source with an effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 80 \, 000\,\rm{K}$ heating ionized gas with a density of $n_e < 10^4 \, \rm{cm}^{-3}$ to a volume-averaged electron temperature of $T_e \simeq 34 \, 000\,\rm{K}$. Crucially, we find that stellar population models assuming a standard IMF are not capable of producing the required heating. We determine an oxygen abundance of ${12+\mathrm{log(O/H)}= 6.89^{+0.26}_{-0.21}}$ which is one of the lowest directly constrained oxygen abundances measured in any galaxy to date, and $\simeq 10 \times$ lower than is typical for $z\simeq8$ galaxies with the same stellar mass. The extremely low metallicity of EXCELS-63107 places it in a regime in which theoretical models expect a transition to a top-heavy IMF, and we speculate that a $\simeq 10-30 \, \times$ excess of $M > 50 \, \rm{M}_{\odot}$ stars is one plausible explanation for its observed properties. We present a spectroscopic analysis of two star-forming galaxies at z~5 observed with JWST/NIRSpec as part of the Early eXtragalactic Continuum and Emission Line Science (EXCELS) survey. The detection of the C III]$\lambda\lambda$1906,09, [O II]$\lambda\lambda$3726,29, [O III]$\lambda\lambda$4363,5007, and [N II]$\lambda$6584 nebular emission lines enables investigation of the C/O, N/O, and C/N abundance ratios using the temperature-sensitive method. The two galaxies have stellar masses of log($M_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$ ) = 8.13$\pm$0.09 and log($M_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$ )=8.52$\pm$0.13 and corresponding metallicities of Z~0.2Z$_{\odot}$ and Z~0.3Z$_{\odot}$. These metallicities are somewhat higher than is typical for other z>5 galaxies with similar stellar mass and are in fact comparable to high-redshift analogue galaxies at z~0. Both galaxies display evidence for N/O enhancement with respect to the z~0 sample, with log(N/O)=-1.07$\pm$0.17 and log(N/O)=-0.86$\pm$0.15 respectively. In contrast, we find low C abundances, with log(C/O)=-0.82$\pm$0.22 and log(C/O)=-1.02$\pm$0.22, consistent with the predicted yields of core-collapse supernovae. Following the trend observed in other high-redshift sources, we find that the C/N ratios are lower at fixed O/H compared to the majority of local galaxies. In contrast to the top-heavy IMF invoked in some studies to explain low C/N ratios in metal-poor galaxies, we find, via comparison to chemical evolution models, that a standard or bottom-heavy IMF better explains the observed abundance ratios in more enriched systems due to an increase in N-enrichment from intermediate mass (4-7M$_{\odot}$) stars. Our results demonstrate that robust measurements of CNO abundances with JWST can reveal unique enrichment pathways in galaxies as a function of both metallicity and redshift., Comment: 17 pages, 8 Figures, and 3 Tables. We present the results of a study investigating the galaxy stellar-mass function (GSMF), size-mass relations and morphological properties of star-forming and quiescent galaxies over the redshift range $0.25

Robust inference of galaxy stellar masses from photometry is crucial for constraints on galaxy assembly across cosmic time. Here, we test a commonly-used Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting code, using simulated galaxies from the SPHINX20 cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation, with JWST NIRCam photometry forward-modelled with radiative transfer. Fitting the synthetic photometry with various star formation history models, we show that recovered stellar masses are, encouragingly, generally robust to within a factor of ~3 for galaxies in the range M*~10^7-10^9M_sol at z=5-10. These results are in stark contrast to recent work claiming that stellar masses can be underestimated by as much as an order of magnitude in these mass and redshift ranges. However, while >90% of masses are recovered to within 0.5dex, there are notable systematic trends, with stellar masses typically overestimated for low-mass galaxies (M*<~10^8M_sol) and slightly underestimated for high-mass galaxies (M*>~10^9M_sol). We demonstrate that these trends arise due to the SED fitting code poorly modelling the impact of strong emission lines on broadband photometry. These systematic trends, which exist for all star formation history parametrisations tested, have a tilting effect on the inferred stellar mass function, with number densities of massive galaxies underestimated (particularly at the lowest redshifts studied) and number densities of lower-mass galaxies typically overestimated. Overall, this work suggests that we should be optimistic about our ability to infer the masses of high-z galaxies observed with JWST (notwithstanding contamination from AGN) but careful when modelling the impact of strong emission lines on broadband photometry., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. We present an analysis of eight star-forming galaxies with $\langle z \rangle = 4.0$ from the JWST EXCELS survey for which we obtain robust chemical abundance estimates for the $\alpha$-elements O, Ne and Ar. The $\alpha$-elements are primarily produced via core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) which should result in $\alpha$-element abundance ratios that do not vary significantly across cosmic time. However, Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) models predict an excess production of Ar relative to O and Ne. The Ar/O abundance ratio can therefore be used as a tracer of the relative enrichment of CCSNe and SNe Ia in galaxies. Our sample significantly increases the number of sources with measurements of ${\rm Ar/O}$ at $z > 2$, and we find that our sample exhibits sub-solar Ar/O ratios on average, with $\rm{Ar/O} = 0.65 \pm 0.10 \, (\rm{Ar/O})_{\odot}$. In contrast, the average Ne/O abundance is fully consistent with the solar ratio, with $\rm{Ne/O} = 1.07 \pm 0.12 \, (\rm{Ne/O})_{\odot}$. Our results support a scenario in which Ar has not had time to build up in the interstellar medium of young high-redshift galaxies, which are dominated by CCSNe enrichment. We show that these abundance estimates are in good agreement with recent Milky Way chemical evolution models, and with Ar/O trends observed for planetary nebulae in the Andromeda galaxy. These results highlight the potential for using multiple element abundance ratios to constrain the chemical enrichment pathways of early galaxies with JWST., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Accurately quantifying the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_\rm{ion}$) of $z>6$ star-forming galaxies (SFGs) is necessary to understand their contribution to reionization. We investigate the ionizing properties of N=279 SFGs selected at $z=6.9-7.6$ from the JWST Cycle-1 imaging programmes; PRIMER and JADES. We use BAGPIPES to consistently infer the equivalent widths of their [OIII]+$\rm{H\beta}$ emission lines ($W_\lambda$) and their physical properties. To supplement our high-redshift galaxies, we measure $W_\lambda$ photometrically for a sample of N=253 $z=3.2-3.6$ SFGs selected from the VANDELS spectroscopic survey. Comparing these samples, we find a strong apparent redshift evolution in their median $W_\lambda$, increasing from $W_\lambda =310\pm25\,\r{A}$ in VANDELS to $W_\lambda =540\pm25\,\r{A}$ in our JWST-based sample. In the JWST sample at $z>7$, we find that $W_\lambda$ correlates with both stellar mass and UV luminosity, with high-mass, $M_{ UV}-$faint galaxies producing systematically weaker emission lines. Moreover, we discover a departure from the standard log-normal shape of the $W_\lambda$ distribution, characterised by a more pronounced tail at lower $W_\lambda$, consistent with increasingly bursty star formation. Using $W_\lambda$ as a proxy for $\xi_\rm{ion}$, and UV spectral slope as a proxy for LyC escape fraction ($f_\rm{esc}$), we find a minority of galaxies with high $\xi_\rm{ion}$ and $f_\rm{esc}$ (e.g., $\rm{log(\xi_{ion}/erg^{-1}Hz})\sim25.6$ and $f_\rm{esc}\sim0.15$). However, we find that the LyC photon budget at $z>7$ is dominated by galaxies with more moderate output, close to the sample median of $\rm{log(\xi_{ion}/erg^{-1}Hz})\sim25.3$ and $f_\rm{esc}\sim0.05$. This is consistent with estimates for the number of LyC photons required to power reionization at $z>7$, with no evidence for over or under-production., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures + 1 appendix. Bistable mechanical metamaterials have shown promise for mitigating the harmful consequences of impact by converting kinetic energy into stored strain energy, offering an alternative and potentially synergistic approach to conventional methods of attenuating energy transmission. In this work, we numerically study the dynamic response of a one-dimensional bistable metamaterial struck by a high speed impactor (where the impactor velocity is commensurate with the sound speed), using the peak kinetic energy experienced at midpoint of the metamaterial compared to that in an otherwise identical linear system as our performance metric. We make five key findings: 1) The bistable material can counter-intuitively perform better (to nearly 1000x better than the linear system) as the viscosity decreases (but remains finite), but only when sufficiently fine discretization has been reached (i.e. the system approaches sufficiently close to the continuum limit); 2) This discretization threshold is sharp, and depends on the viscosity present; 3) The bistable materials can also perform significantly worse than linear systems (for low discretization and viscosity or zero viscosity); 4) The dependence on discretization stems from the partition of energy into trains of solitary waves that have pulse lengths proportional to the unit cell size, where, with intersite viscosity, the solitary wave trains induce high velocity gradients and thus enhanced damping compared to linear, and low-unit-cell-number bistable, materials; and 5) When sufficiently fine discretization has been reached at low viscosities, the bistable system outperforms the linear one for a wide range of impactor conditions. The escape fraction of ionising photons from galaxies ($f_\mathrm{esc}$) is a key parameter for understanding how intergalactic hydrogen became reionised, but it remains mostly unconstrained. Measurements have been limited to the average value in galaxy ensembles and handfuls of individual detections. To help understand which mechanisms govern ionising photon escape, here we infer the distribution of $f_\mathrm{esc}$. We develop a hierarchical Bayesian inference technique to estimate the population distribution of $f_\mathrm{esc}$ from the ratio of Lyman Continuum to non-ionising UV flux measured from broadband photometry. We apply it to a sample of 148 z ~ 3.5 star-forming galaxies from the VANDELS spectroscopic survey. We explore four physically motivated distributions: constant, log-normal, exponential and bimodal, recovering $\langle f_\mathrm{esc} \rangle \approx5\%$ for most models. We find the observations are best described by an exponential $f_\mathrm{esc}$ distribution with scale factor $\mu=0.05^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$. This indicates most galaxies in our sample exhibit very low escape fractions while predicting substantial ionising photon leakage for only a few galaxies, implying a range of optical depths in the ISM and/or time variability in ionising photon escape. We rule out a bimodal distribution at high significance, indicating that a purely bimodal model of ionising photon escape (due to very strong sightline and/or time variability) is not favoured. We compare our recovered exponential distribution with the SPHINX simulations and find that, while the simulation also predicts an exponential-like distribution, it significantly underpredicts our inferred mean. We compare mock ultraviolet C II and Si II absorption and emission line features generated using a ~10$^9$ $M_\odot$ virtual galaxy with observations of 131 $z~3$ galaxies from the VANDELS survey. We find that the mock spectra reproduce reasonably well a large majority (83%) of the \vandels\ spectra ($\chi^2<2$), but do not resemble the most massive objects ($>10^{10}M_\odot$) which exhibit broad absorption features. Interestingly, the best-matching mock spectra originate from periods of intense star formation in the virtual galaxy, where its luminosity is four times higher than in periods of relative quiescence. Furthermore, for each galaxy, we predict the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fractions using the environment of the virtual galaxy. We derive an average escape fraction of 0.01$\pm$0.02, consistent with other estimates from the literature. The predicted escape fractions are tightly correlated with the Lyman-$\alpha$ escape fractions and highly consistent with observed empirical trends. Additionally, galaxies with larger predicted escape fractions exhibit bluer $\beta$ slopes, more Lyman-$\alpha$ flux, and weaker low-ionization absorption lines. Building upon the good agreement between our predictions and observationally established LyC diagnostics, we examine the LyC leakage mechanisms in the simulation. We find that LyC photon leakage is enhanced in directions where the observed flux dominantly emerges from compact regions depleted of neutral gas and dust, mirroring the scenario inferred from observational data. In general, this study further highlights the potential of high-resolution radiation hydrodynamics simulations in analyzing UV absorption and emission line features and providing valuable insights into the LyC leakage of star-forming galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 0 birds. We report ultra-deep, medium-resolution spectroscopic observations for 4 quiescent galaxies with log$_{10}(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot})>11$ at $3 < z < 5$. These data were obtained with JWST NIRSpec as part of the Early eXtragalactic Continuum and Emission Line Science (EXCELS) survey, which we introduce in this work. The first two galaxies are newly selected from PRIMER UDS imaging, both at $z=4.62$ and separated by $860$ pkpc on the sky, within a larger structure for which we confirm several other members. Both formed at $z\simeq8-10$. These systems could plausibly merge by the present day to produce a local massive elliptical galaxy. The other two ultra-massive quiescent galaxies are previously known at $z=3.99$ and $3.19$, with the latter (ZF-UDS-7329) having been the subject of debate as potentially too old and too massive to be accommodated by the $\Lambda$-CDM halo-mass function. Both exhibit high stellar metallicities, and for ZF-UDS-7329 we are able to measure the $\alpha-$enhancement, obtaining [Mg/Fe] = $0.42^{+0.19}_{-0.17}$. We finally evaluate whether these 4 galaxies are consistent with the $\Lambda$-CDM halo-mass function using an extreme value statistics approach. We find that the $z=4.62$ objects and the $z=3.19$ object are unlikely within our area under the assumption of standard stellar fractions ($f_*\simeq0.1-0.2$). However, these objects roughly align with the most massive galaxies expected under the assumption of 100 per cent conversion of baryons to stars ($f_*$=1). We present determinations of the gas-phase and stellar metallicities of a sample of 65 star-forming galaxies at $z \simeq 3.5$ using rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy from the VANDELS survey in combination with follow-up rest-frame optical spectroscopy from VLT/KMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. We infer gas-phase oxygen abundances ($Z_{\mathrm{g}}$; tracing O/H) via strong optical nebular lines and stellar iron abundances ($Z_{\star}$; tracing Fe/H) from full spectral fitting to the FUV continuum. Our sample spans the stellar mass range $8.5 < \mathrm{log}(M_{\star}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) < 10.5$ and shows clear evidence for both a stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We find that our O and Fe abundance estimates both exhibit a similar mass-dependence, such that $\mathrm{Fe/H}\propto M_{\star}^{0.30\pm0.11}$ and $\mathrm{O/H}\propto M_{\star}^{0.32\pm0.09}$. At fixed $M_{\star}$ we find that, relative to their solar values, O abundances are systematically larger than Fe abundances (i.e., $\alpha$-enhancement).We estimate an average enhancement of $\mathrm{(O/Fe)} = 2.65 \pm 0.16 \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)_\odot}$ which appears to be independent of $M_{\star}$. We employ analytic chemical evolution models to place a constraint on the strength of galactic-level outflows via the mass-outflow factor ($\eta$). We show that outflow efficiencies that scale as $\eta \propto M_{\star}^{-0.32}$ can simultaneously explain the functional form of of the stellar and gas-phase MZR, as well as the degree of $\alpha$-enhancement at fixed Fe/H. Our results add further evidence to support a picture in which $\alpha$-enhanced abundance ratios are ubiquitous in high-redshift star-forming galaxies, as expected for young systems whose interstellar medium is primarily enriched by core-collapse supernovae., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted in MNRAS

Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex immune-mediated disease with no currently known cure. There is growing evidence to support the role of diet in reducing some of the symptoms and disease progression in MS, and we previously developed and tested the feasibility of a digital nutrition education program for people with MS. Objective The aim of this study was to explore factors that influenced engagement in the digital nutrition education program, including features influencing capability, opportunity, and motivation to change their dietary behaviours. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with people who MS who completed some or all of the program, until data saturation was reached. Interviews were analysed inductively using thematic analysis. Themes were deductively mapped against the COM-B behaviour change model. Results 16 interviews were conducted with participants who completed all (n=10) or some of the program (n=6). Four themes emerged: 1) Acquiring and validating nutrition knowledge; 2) Influence of time and social support; 3) Getting in early to improve health; and 4) Accounting for food literacy experiences. Discussion This is the first online nutrition program with suitable behavioural supports for people with MS. It highlights the importance of disease-specific and evidence-based nutrition education to support people with MS to make dietary changes. Acquiring nutrition knowledge, coupled with practical support mechanisms such as recipe booklets and goal-setting, emerged as crucial for facilitating engagement with the program. Conclusions When designing education programs for people with MS and other neurological conditions, healthcare professionals and program designers should consider flexible delivery and building peer support to address the needs and challenges faced by participants.

Objective: Diet quality is important for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), but conflicting online information causes them confusion. People with MS want evidence-based MS-specific information to help them make healthy dietary changes, and we co-designed an asynchronous, online nutrition education program (Eating Well with MS) with the MS community. Our aim was to determine the feasibility of Eating Well with MS. Methods: We used a single-arm pre-post design. The feasibility trial was a nine-week intervention with adults with confirmed MS. Feasibility outcomes: 1) demand (recruitment); 2) practicality (completion); 3) acceptability (Intrinsic Motivation Inventory: interest/enjoyment and value/usefulness subscales); and 4) limited efficacy testing (Diet Habits Questionnaire (DHQ); Critical Nutrition Literacy Tool (CNLT); Food Literacy Behaviour Checklist (FLBC)). Results: The recruitment target (n=70) was reached. 87% completed at least one module and 57% completed the full program (five modules). The median interest/enjoyment rating was 5 out of 7 and median value/usefulness rating was 6 out of 7 (where 7 = very true). Compared to pre-program, participants who completed any of the program had statistically significantly improved DHQ, CNLT, and FLBC scores. Conclusion: Eating Well with MS was well received by the MS community and improved their dietary behaviours; demonstrating feasibility. Our findings support the use of co-design methods when developing resources to improve dietary behaviours.

We present a new determination of the evolving galaxy UV luminosity function (LF) over the redshift range $8.58.5)>0.05$) to undertake a statistical calculation of the UV LF. Our new measurements span $\simeq4$ magnitudes in UV luminosity at $z=9-12.5$, placing new constraints on both the shape and evolution of the LF at early times. Our measurements yield a new estimate of the early evolution of cosmic star-formation rate density ($\rho_{\rm{SFR}}$) confirming the gradual decline deduced from early JWST studies, at least out to $z \simeq 12$. Finally we show that the observed early evolution of the galaxy UV LF (and $\rho_{\rm{SFR}}$) can be reproduced in a ${\rm \Lambda}$CDM Universe, with no change in dust properties or star-formation efficiency required out to $z \simeq 12$. Instead, a progressive trend towards younger stellar population ages can reproduce the observations, and the typical ages required at $z \simeq$ 8, 9, 10, and 11 all converge on $\simeq 380-330$ Myr after the Big Bang, indicative of a rapid emergence of early galaxies at $z \simeq 12 - 13$. This is consistent with the first indications of a steeper drop-off in $\rho_{\rm{SFR}}$ we find beyond $z \simeq 13$, possibly reflecting the rapid evolution of the halo mass function at earlier times., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes ($\beta$) for a sample of $172$ galaxy candidates at $8 < z_{\mathrm{phot}} < 16$ selected from a combination of JWST NIRCam imaging and COSMOS/UltraVISTA ground-based near-infrared imaging. Focusing primarily on a new sample of $121$ galaxies at $\langle z \rangle \simeq 11$ selected from $\simeq 320$ arcmin$^2$ of public JWST imaging data across $15$ independent data sets, we investigate the evolution of $\beta$ in the galaxy population at $z \geq 9$. We find a significant trend between $\beta$ and redshift, with the inverse-variance weighted mean UV slope evolving from $\langle \beta \rangle = -2.17 \pm 0.06$ at $z = 9.5$ to $\langle \beta \rangle = -2.59 \pm 0.06$ at $z = 11.5$. Based on a comparison with stellar population models including nebular continuum emission, we find that at $z>10.5$ the average UV continuum slope is consistent with the intrinsic blue limit of dust-free stellar populations $(\beta_{\mathrm{int}} \simeq -2.6)$. These results suggest that the moderately dust-reddened galaxy population at $z < 10$ was essentially unattenuated at $z \simeq 11$. The extremely blue galaxies being uncovered at $z>10$ place important constraints on dust attenuation in galaxies in the early Universe, and imply that the already observed galaxy population is likely supplying an ionising photon budget capable of maintaining ionised IGM fractions of $\gtrsim 5$ per cent at $z\simeq11$., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present a study of the connection between the escape fraction of Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) and Lyman-continuum (LyC) photons within a sample of N=152 star-forming galaxies selected from the VANDELS survey at $3.85

We present a new determination of the evolving galaxy UV luminosity function (LF) over the redshift range $9.5250$ arcmin$^2$) data set of JWST NIRCam near-infrared imaging assembled from thirteen public JWST surveys. Our relatively large-area search allows us to uncover a sample of 61 robust $z>9.5$ candidates detected at $\geq 8\sigma$, and hence place new constraints on the intermediate-to-bright end of the UV LF. When combined with our previous JWST+UltraVISTA results, this allows us to measure the form of the LF over a luminosity range corresponding to four magnitudes ($M_{1500}$). At these early times we find that the galaxy UV LF is best described by a double power-law function, consistent with results obtained from recent ground-based and early JWST studies at similar redshifts. Our measurements provide further evidence for a relative lack of evolution at the bright-end of the UV LF at $z=9-11$, but do favour a steep faint-end slope ($\alpha\leq-2$). The luminosity-weighted integral of our evolving UV LF provides further evidence for a gradual, smooth (exponential) decline in co-moving star-formation rate density ($\rho_{\mathrm{SFR}}$) at least out to $z\simeq12$, with our determination of $\rho_{\mathrm{SFR}}(z=11)$ lying significantly above the predictions of many theoretical models of galaxy evolution., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a spectro-photometric study of a mass-complete sample of quiescent galaxies at $1.0 < z < 1.3$ with $\mathrm{log_{10}}(M_{\star}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}) \geq 10.3$ drawn from the VANDELS survey, exploring the relationship between stellar mass, age and star-formation history. Within our sample of 114 galaxies, we derive a stellar-mass vs stellar-age relation with a slope of $1.20^{+0.28}_{-0.27}$ Gyr per decade in stellar mass. The extremely rapid assembly of the earliest galaxies during the first billion years of cosmic history is a major challenge for our understanding of galaxy formation physics. The advent of JWST has exacerbated this issue by confirming the existence of galaxies in significant numbers as early as the first few hundred million years. Perhaps even more surprisingly, in some galaxies, this initial highly efficient star formation rapidly shuts down, or quenches, giving rise to massive quiescent galaxies as little as 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. However, due to their faintness and red colour, it has proven extremely challenging to learn about these extreme quiescent galaxies, or to confirm whether any exist at earlier times. Here we report the spectroscopic confirmation of a massive quiescent galaxy, GS-9209, at redshift $z=4.658$, just 1.25 billion years after the Big Bang, using JWST NIRSpec. From these data we infer a stellar mass of $M_* = 3.8\pm0.2\times10^{10}\ M_\odot$, which formed over a $\simeq200$ Myr period before this galaxy quenched its star formation activity at $z=6.5^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$, when the Universe was $\simeq800$ million years old. Based on the presence of broad H$\alpha$ in the spectrum and a high narrow-line [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratio, we infer the presence of an accreting supermassive black hole, with a mass of $M_\bullet = 5\pm1\times10^{8}\ M_\odot$. This large black hole mass relative to the stellar mass suggests that active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback may have been responsible for quenching this galaxy. GS-9209 is also extremely compact, with an effective radius, $r_e=215\pm20$ parsecs. The contribution of different physical effects to tear breakup (TBU) in subjects with no self-reported history of dry eye are quantified. An automated system using a convolutional neural network is deployed on fluorescence (FL) imaging videos to identify multiple likely TBU instances in each trial. Once identified, extracted FL intensity data was fit by mathematical models that included tangential flow along the eye, evaporation, osmosis and FL intensity of emission from the tear film. The mathematical models consisted of systems of ordinary differential equations for the aqueous layer thickness, osmolarity, and the FL concentration. Optimizing the fit of the models to the FL intensity data determined the mechanism(s) driving each instance of TBU and produced an estimate of the osmolarity within TBU. Fits were produced for 467 instances of potential TBU from 15 non-DED subjects. The results showed a distribution of causes of TBU in these healthy subjects, as reflected by estimated flow and evaporation rates, which appear to agree well with previously published data. Final osmolarity depended strongly on the TBU mechanism, generally increasing with evaporation rate but complicated by the dependence on flow. The results suggest that it might be possible to classify individual subjects and provide a baseline for comparison and potential classification of dry eye disease subjects.

It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) that student behavioral health and wellness must be prioritized for students to successfully access and engage in educational opportunities. It is imperative that school systems respond to, and address, student behavioral health and wellness to ameliorate disparities related to the social determinants of health. School nurses are often the initial access point to identify concerns, determine interventions, and link families to school and/or community resources. This document provides the background and rationale for NASN's position on the behavioral health and wellness of students.
