This article is dedicated to examining a bilateral project established between South Korea and Türkiye with the overarching objective of elevating awareness and endowing preschool teachers with the capacity to embed education for sustainability within their classroom practices seamlessly. For this purpose, a professional development (PD) program was developed regarding the three pillars of sustainability and the 7R themes. Fourteen preschool teachers attended the PD program. Three teachers participated in this case study to reveal teachers' transformations regarding sustainability and early childhood education for sustainability. The data were collected through pre- and post-follow-up interviews and classroom observations. Thematic content analyses were conducted. According to the results, the PD program enhanced and deepened teachers' sustainability knowledge. In addition, teachers could transfer the knowledge from the PD program on education for sustainability into their practice not entirely but acceptably, and they have a chance to reconsider their lifestyle habits regarding sustainability in many areas.

The student check-up (SCU) is a brief school-based motivational interviewing intervention developed to promote academic-related behavioral changes and to increase accessibility to mental health services. Despite published randomized controlled trials demonstrating SCU's effectiveness in promoting student self-efficacy in academic efforts, the SCU's impact on student grade outcome has been inconsistent across studies. This study examines whether student participants' written statements that represent change talk and sustain talk predict differences in post-treatment grade outcomes and whether these effects are moderated by students' pre-treatment academic achievement. In addition, we examine whether change and sustain statements mediate the relationship between study sites and grade outcomes. A two-level linear regression controlling for pre-treatment grades indicated that as the frequency of change statements increases, students' post-treatment grades in English Language Arts decrease (B = -0.62, p = 0.03), suggesting that "the more" is not always "the merrier" when it comes to evoking change statements related to academic goals that require multiple behavioral changes for attainment.

Check-in/Check-out (CICO) behavioral support has been implemented in Finnish School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) schools to cater to students who require personalized behavior support beyond the universal level. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of CICO as a behavioral support method. However, further research is needed to investigate its effectiveness in a larger sample and to analyze the timeline for behavioral change. This study focused on 51 elementary school students in Finland, assessing their behavior at baseline and during the CICO intervention phase using two data collection methods: the Daily Report Card (DRC) and the School Situation Questionnaire (SSQ). Nonlinear growth modeling was employed to examine the effects of the intervention. The results indicated that CICO yielded significant positive effects on behavior within 1 week of initiating support. After the outcomes stabilized, the behavior change remained stable beyond the first week of the intervention. These effects were detected in both the target behavior measured with DRC and the problem behavior measured with SSQ. These findings suggest that CICO interventions produce rapid and sustained changes in behavior. Further, the effects of CICO were observed in various settings within the school environment, indicating distal outcomes.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure college student athletes' nutrition knowledge and behavior before and after a text message-based educational intervention. Participants: Athletes (n = 35) participated by completing a pre- and post-intervention survey. Methods: This survey gathered information on ability to identify carbohydrate and protein food sources, pre- and post-workout intake, and behavior. Text messages were sent during the 4-week intervention and included information regarding the importance of carbohydrate consumption before training, and a carbohydrate-protein mixture for recovery. Results: Dependent t-tests revealed a lack of statistically significant increases in total knowledge (p = 0.156) or behavior (p = 0.177), but an increase in the behavior questions regarding efficacy of carbohydrate before training (p = 0.026) and carbohydrate and protein after training (p = 0.016). Conclusion: This suggests the text message educational intervention did influence behavioral outcomes. Future research should focus on the effectiveness, length, and frequency of the text message intervention, and investigate the athletes' willingness to change dietary behaviors.

Objective: To explore the feasibility and utility of a tolerance break (T-Break) guide on young adults' cannabis use. Participants: Young adults aged 18--29 (n = 125) who were current cannabis users. Methods: Participants recruited through posters and listservs at various universities were offered the T-Break Guide--daily activities, advice, and encouragement--to help complete a 21-day cannabis break. Bivariate analyses examined associations between Guide use and follow-up measures. Results: Compared to non-Guide users, participants who used the Guide "a lot" were more likely to complete the 21-day abstinence break (84% vs. 57%), revise their personal definition of balance to mean less cannabis (84% vs. 62%), and plan a future break (32% vs. 11%). Conclusion: Use of this self-directed T-Break Guide may help young adults take a break from cannabis use and reduce future use. Further research using more rigorous designs to test the Guide's efficacy and assess longer-term maintenance of effects is needed.

Educators struggle to select evidence-based practices (EBPs) for autistic students, which is an important skill to develop for special educators in training (SETs). To examine how these SETs learn and begin to make decisions about instructional practices for autistic students to attain their goals, we interviewed and surveyed 11 SETs before and after completing a university course on evidence-based practices for autistic students. We used the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), a comprehensive compilation of research-based factors that influence behaviour change, to guide qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis to identify factors that influenced SETs' decision difficulty and intention to implement instructional plans. At the beginning of the course, most SETs described a lack of familiarity, weak intentions and surface understanding of factors. At the end of the course, SETs described and reported less difficulty in intervention planning and improved knowledge of EBP, but this was not statistically significant. We discuss important individual differences related to their difficulty, consideration of collaborative and environmental factors and intentions to implement their plans, which often corresponded with their reports of applied experience. Future directions for the pre-service preparation of special educators service autistic students are shared.

Purpose: This paper aims to describe the academic community's perspectives about climate change learning and engagement opportunities by means of a case study at the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil. Design/methodology/approach: A set of interviews and focus groups were conducted, and data collection focused on three main groups, namely, university students, professors and managers. The analysis was developed through content analysis of the individual interviews and focus groups. Findings: The results showed that the academic community is trying to change their attitudes and behaviours, and students would like to learn more about climate change. Originality/value: This investigation combines the views of different academic groups and indicates initiatives that could boost the university initiatives towards climate action and learning.

Background: The Trickle-Down Engagement Model posits that instructor engagement promotes student engagement which, in turn, has positive implications for student learning. Objective: Our goal was to provide evidence-based practical recommendations for instructors to communicate their engagement with course material to students, activating the trickle-down process. Method: In two experiments, we used recorded mock lectures in which we manipulated instructor movement within the classroom (Study 1) and enthusiastic statements that cued instructor engagement (Study 2). In both studies, we measured student learning and assessed perceptions of the instructor's engagement, their own engagement, and the presented material. Results: Engaged cue statements successfully communicated instructor engagement but physical movement did not. Consistent with the Trickle-Down Engagement Model and our hypotheses, perceptions of instructors' engagement positively related to participants' own engagement, which was also positively related to better learning outcomes. Conclusion: When instructors verbally communicate their engagement with course material, students are more engaged and demonstrate better learning. Teaching Implications: Channeling explicit, positive instructor engagement has numerous benefits, including enhanced student learning and educational experiences.

Early adolescents entering middle school are at a pivotal developmental phase as they become less dependent on parents/guardians and seek greater autonomy while encountering a complexity of social demands requiring them to regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to achieve academic and social success. Yet, students who receive services for emotional and behavioral disorders often struggle with their emotions and externalizing behavior, contributing to a lack of motivation to attain their goals. Fortunately, researchers have found goal setting plays an important role in improving students' self-regulation skills. As such, we describe explicit instructional techniques that align with a phased goal setting process to bolster students' intrinsic motivation and self-regulation. First, we underscore the significance of goal setting to amplify students' motivation and fostering self-regulation that, consequently, can create positive changes in their behavior. We provide a step-by-step guide for educators to assist students in committing to and achieving their goals.

Objective: To test whether pediatrician training leads to provider utilization of stimulant diversion prevention strategies as reported by adolescent patients with ADHD. Methods: Pediatric practices received a stimulant diversion prevention workshop (SDP) or continued treatment-as-usual (TAU) in a cluster-randomized controlled trial. Surveys were completed by 341 stimulant-treated patients at baseline and three follow-up assessments. Results: In intent-to-treat analyses of patient reports, SDP adolescents reported more provider use of diversion prevention strategies compared to TAU. They also reported more parent-patient communication about diversion. Provider satisfaction with the training was strong. Conclusions: Pediatricians can make use of clinical practice strategies for the prevention of stimulant diversion following a 1-hr training; findings are novel given their reliance on confidential patient report of provider behavior and increase confidence in the results. Coupled with the positive provider satisfaction ratings, results suggest that this brief workshop may be an option for concerned providers that also has the effect of increasing discussion at home about safe use of stimulants.

Decades of research has demonstrated the power of growth mindsets (i.e. belief in the malleability of the qualities of humans) to shape people's ways of making sense of their socio-cultural reality and influence their ways of thinking about and acting towards change. Yet, research which connects mindsets with climate action or sustainability behavior remains scarce. This study explores the association between mindsets and climate action among European young people. Our findings, based on statistical analyses of survey data from Tampere (Finland), Genoa (Italy), Galway (Ireland) and Bristol (United Kingdom) (N = 1,814), indicate that growth mindsets about persons and groups are associated with some dimensions of climate action.1 However, the results also showed that the dimensions of climate actions are understood in slightly different ways in different countries, possibly because of contextual differences. Developing and researching locally adapted approaches to cultivate growth mindsets in climate change education is recommended.

The accelerating impacts of climate change present significant challenges to sustainable urban development, testing the resilience of current governance frameworks and stakeholder responsibilities. In alignment with the EU's Green Deal, robust adaptation strategies and proactive climate risk anticipation are essential. Traditional discussions emphasize overcoming technological, financial and institutional barriers; however, social and individual factors also significantly hinder adaptation. This study explores the pivotal role of citizen engagement in climate risk management and adaptation, focusing on the Lithuanian context and comparing the results with a survey in Sweden. The research evaluates both external influences, such as experiences with climate-related hazards and adaptation actions, and internal factors, including beliefs, values and individual adaptive capacity. Key findings reveal that adaptation behaviour in Lithuania and in Sweden is deeply influenced by past experiences with extreme weather events and economic considerations, with a significant portion of the population having faced such events recently. Factors such as economic considerations (low costs, financial benefits) are identified as critical motivators for future adaptation actions in Lithuania. On the other hand, in Sweden, respondents first preferred ecological factors (such as contributing to climate change mitigation) when considering future adaptation actions. The study underscores the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance community resilience, highlighting the importance of socio-cultural contexts in shaping adaptation strategies. It emphasizes the necessity for comprehensive, inclusive educational programmes that address local climate impacts and promote proactive community involvement. The findings advocate for further comparative studies across diverse socio-cultural settings to deepen insights into effective adaptation measures and to support the development of resilient communities worldwide.

High rates of teacher turnover are of critical concern for education agencies on a national level. When surveyed, teachers commonly report that student problem behavior is a primary motivator for leaving the profession. Previous research indicates that efforts to promote classroom management skills that address disruptive student behavior may alleviate some of the stress that leads to teacher burnout. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the Good Behavior Game on self-reported stress levels in teachers. The rate of academically engaged behavior in students was also assessed as a secondary outcome measure. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate the effects of teacher implementation of the Good Behavior Game within three elementary-level classrooms at a Title I school. Overall, the results indicate that the Good Behavior Game intervention procedures were effective in decreasing teacher stress levels and increasing academically engaged behavior in students.

This systematic review and synthesis summarizes intervention research for Grade K-12 students with a reading difficulty and co-occurring inattention to identify (a) the relevant intervention literature base, (b) the student, study, and intervention characteristics of these studies, (c) the effects of these interventions on reading and behavior outcomes, and (d) the collateral impact of reading interventions and behavior interventions on behavior outcomes and reading outcomes, respectively. Our search process yielded 14 eligible studies. Findings suggest that word reading instruction is associated with improved word reading outcomes and self-monitoring and function-based interventions are associated with improved student behavior. No study measured a collateral effect for reading or behavior interventions. Future reading intervention research is needed to better understand how to improve the reading and behavior outcomes for Grade K-12 students with a reading difficulty and co-occurring inattention. This study aims to demonstrate the effect of a transtheoretical model (TTM)-based physical activity program on the exercise behavior of adolescents using WhatsApp. The study was conducted with high school students (N = 185) in a pre-/posttest, quasi-experimental design. TTM-based text messages were sent to the intervention group (n = 95) over WhatsApp every day for 8 weeks. The intervention group demonstrated more statistically significant progression in the exercising stages of change compared to the control group (n = 90) ([chi-squared] = 20.10; p = 0.00). It was also found that this group had a higher exercising self-efficacy score (t = 2.647; p = 0.009) and a higher physical activity total metabolic equivalent of task score (Z = -3.521; p = 0.000). There was no significant difference in BMI and perception of pros and cons (p > 0.05). The program was found to be effective in terms of recording progress in the exercising stages of change, increasing exercising self-efficacy, and maintaining a physical activity program.

Behaviour change communication (BCC) remains a central component of the interventions used in the fight against malaria in Ghana. However, there is limited evidence of its effectiveness. This study evaluated the effects of BCC strategies on knowledge (symptoms, causes and prevention) and overall knowledge of malaria among Ghanaian women aged 15-49 years. The propensity score matching (PSM) approach and logistic regression were used to analyse data from the 2016 edition of the Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS). Women who participated in community-level education or heard/saw media messages on malaria, or both, had significantly more knowledge of the disease than women who lacked access to any of these mediums of communication. The effect of these strategies on women's overall knowledge of malaria is about 2% to 4% and is higher on their knowledge of the symptoms (3% to 6%) and prevention (2% to 4%) than the causes (2%). The combined effects of both mediums of communication are relatively higher than the effect of either of them as a single medium of communication. Further analysis showed that improved knowledge of the disease is associated with higher preventive measures taken by women for themselves and for their children. The results are more significant in rural and poor households than in urban and non-poor households. These findings underscore the need for the Ministry of Health and its partner institutions to adopt an innovative approach which combines the two strategies in intensively educating Ghanaians, and women in particular, on the symptoms and prevention of malaria, giving due cognisance to households' socioeconomic status and geographical location.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of embedding special interest areas (SIAs) in whole-group (WG) instruction on engagement and out-of-seat (OOS) behaviors for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in general education classrooms. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the functional relation between the SIA-embedded instruction and engagement and OOS behaviors of all three children. Non-targeted probes were conducted after every intervention session to investigate whether there was behavioral change when the SIAs were removed from instruction. Results indicated that embedding SIAs in WG instruction may increase the engagement behavior and decrease the OOS behavior of children with ASD; behavioral changes were maintained over time for all children.

Differential negative reinforcement of alternative behavior is a technique in which students can escape a portion of a task they perceive to be unpleasant by reaching a predetermined criterion. In this article, we define the negative reinforcement trap and review research on differential negative reinforcement of alternative behavior. We then describe procedural steps for teachers to effectively prevent students from escaping tasks or activities they find unpleasant as well as increase work accuracy and productivity.

Background: Morality and moral reasoning develop over the course of life, but such development may encounter obstacles. Psycho-educational interventions could be designed to improve moral reasoning and attitude towards prosociality. In the last decades, many interventions employed digital technologies ranging from multicomponent online platforms to serious games and virtual reality, making use of interactivity and immersive properties that could make moral stimuli more engaging. Aims: This study aimed at reviewing the literature on digital interventions to support morality and moral reasoning, carried out with subjects of all age groups. Methods and results: Two electronic databases were searched with a systematic approach, and retrieved publications were scanned by authors against inclusion criteria. Twenty-three articles were reviewed. In general, the literature describes encouraging results of digital interventions to support morality. Moreover, a huge variety of morality conceptualizations emerged across various contexts (e.g., professional, school and sports) as well as various outcome measurements (e.g., change in attitudes and change in behaviour). Conclusions: Effectiveness of digital interventions may relate to immersive and interactive simulations in particular, in that they allow participants not only to learn about moral rules and principles but also to actively exercise their own morality to make decisions. Future research may build on the present scoping review to analyse specific types of interventions' effectiveness with a meta-analytical approach.

Little is still known about interaction patterns learners form while exchanging peer feedback particularly when working with different peers. To address this gap, this study analyzes patterns of interaction while exchanging feedback on academic paragraphs written by 16 English as a foreign language (EFL) learners enrolled at a state university in Türkiye. The participants were asked to write three academic paragraphs and submit them online. They were paired with a different student for each paragraph feedback session and exchanged their paragraphs. Then they held an online meeting on Microsoft Teams with their partner and exchanged feedback. The meetings were recorded. Next, the students revised their paragraphs considering the peer feedback. They made the changes on their paragraphs only if they found the peer feedback useful and necessary. Patterns of interaction in the recordings were analyzed according to Storch's (2002) framework. According to it, there are four interaction patterns placed on mutuality and equality axes and named as collaborative, dominant/dominant, dominant/passive, and expert/novice. The results showed that the most common pattern was expert/novice. That means in the majority of the peer feedback sessions reviewers controlled the task, but both participants showed engagement. Around half of the participants were consistent in their patterns both as a reviewer and a writer. This study is believed to shed light on EFL learners' roles as writers and reviewers. It is also believed that with a comprehensive peer feedback training, learners could be encouraged to form more collaborative patterns, which is associated with better learning outcomes.

Prior work has shown that students' self-reported levels on social-emotional measures predict achievement levels and gains, but we have little evidence on whether within-student changes in self-reports on social-emotional surveys are predictive of changes in theoretically related academic and behavioral outcomes. We use large-scale data from the California CORE districts to examine whether changes in individual reports on social-emotional measures from one school year to the next predict changes in state math and English language arts test scores and attendance. We show that changes in self-reported social-emotional measures predict changes in both achievement and attendance. These results are robust across model specifications. Moreover, the relationships between SEL and achievement and attendance outcomes are consistent across student subgroups.

As the increase in university students' mental health problems poses significant challenges to education, new research-based ways to support students' well-being in higher education are urgently needed. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to be effective in enhancing different aspects of well-being in a variety of contexts. Although study burnout has been shown to have detrimental impacts on students' well-being and studying, not much is known about the person-oriented features of burnout risk in relation to ACT-based intervention outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of an online ACT-based course on different aspects of university students' well-being and study ability in latent groups of students that had different levels of study burnout and engagement at the beginning of the intervention. The results of latent profile analysis (LPA) showed that students (N=352) represented four profiles at the beginning of the course: indifferent (37.8%), engaged (29%), engaged-inefficacious (13.6%), and burned-out (19.6%). The results of mixed ANOVA with repeated measures showed that psychological flexibility, well-being, study engagement and organised studying increased, and study burnout risk decreased in the whole sample of course-participating students. The changes in students' exhaustion, well-being, psychological flexibility, and organised studying did not differ between the four burnout and engagement profiles. The profiles differed in the changes of cynicism, inadequacy and engagement. The results of this study provide new knowledge of the person-oriented features of study burnout and indicate that ACT-based course interventions can be effective in enhancing different profiles representing university students' well-being.

This study assessed the influence of a 10-week teacher emotionally supportive quasi-experimental intervention on the perceived teacher emotional support (PTES), basic psychological needs (BPNs) satisfaction, emotions of anxiety and enjoyment, and emotional engagement of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Strategies targeting the three dimensions of TES, that is, positive climate, teacher sensitivity, and regard for students' perspectives, were deployed exclusively in an experimental group (N = 63), which was compared to a control group (N = 58) in which a more typical teaching approach was followed. Classroom observations and questionnaires were used to capture three time points of changes in learner behaviors. The results of multivariate analyses revealed significant positive changes over time in students' self-reported PTES behaviors, BPNs satisfaction, emotions, emotional engagement and observed behaviors solely in the experimental condition. Learner BPNs satisfaction showed the largest group differences by mid-term treatment. With the continuous deployment of the treatment, the between-group differences peaked toward the end of the experiment for all learner behaviors. The largest variance at this stage was in learner PTES. These experimentally driven findings provide compelling evidence for the advantages of TES pedagogical interventions for second language learners.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, student services leaders needed to adapt to working entirely virtually, find creative solutions to adjust their service delivery, and change how they engaged with their teams. Before COVID-19, studies of virtual leadership focused on virtual teams developed because of the geographical distance between team members. This qualitative study investigated virtual leadership and virtual teams developed because of the move to virtual work during the COVID-19 pandemic. It examined how student services leaders changed their leadership behaviours in response to moving to the virtual work environment. Using data gathered through a questionnaire, interviews, and documentation, four themes reflecting how leaders changed their behaviours and practices were identified: reimagining communication, reconstructing work using technology, reframing team support, and reorienting toward hybrid work. Understanding how these leaders managed their virtual teams at a midsized university in southern Ontario provides insight into what practices might be helpful for teams that continue exclusively virtual work and those that transition to a hybrid work approach.

The purpose of this study was to pilot the DREAMS (Desire, Readiness, Empowerment, Action, and Mastery for Success) program, a community-collaborative, after-school intervention program designed specifically to address the holistic developmental needs of students at school. The author originally developed and implemented the program in Kerala, India, and later redesigned it for American school students. Combining the theories of Vygotsky and Erikson, the DREAMS model emphasizes the impact of the community on the development of children. This study evaluates the effects of a summer camp, the primary intervention of a three-year program, on the self-worth, self-esteem, and self-concept of 20 middle school students in Northeast Louisiana. After students attended the week-long program, the most significant improvements were observed in self-esteem and self-worth. Further longitudinal or comparative experimental research on the complete design would provide stronger evidence to draw more substantive conclusions.

The interrupted case study is a structured way to engage students in active learning. Interruptions, or pauses for reflection and discussion scheduled within the case-study presentation, provide students with a chance to collaborate and engage in critical thinking. Critical thinking style, which is a measure of how one tends to think critically, provides insight into how one tackles problem solving. This article describes a pilot project that combined critical-thinking style and an interrupted case study, delivered over a two-class-period time frame, to four college courses. The project's goals were to assess students' self-reported knowledge, self-reported ability, changes in thinking, and intentions to use their critical thinking style in the future. The University of Florida Critical Thinking Inventory and an end-of-session evaluation were administered online, and 110 students voluntarily responded. Results indicated that many students enjoyed the discussion-based and problem-solving structure of the interrupted case study. Results also showed increases in students' self-reported knowledge about critical thinking style and content covered in the case study. For teachers looking to pilot an interrupted case study with a critical thinking style component, two class sessions can have a positive effect on student learning and encourage critical thinking.

Adolescence is marked by significant emotional challenges, with mood disorders becoming increasingly prevalent, necessitating effective interventions. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills have emerged as promising tools for addressing emotional dysregulation in adolescents. This systematic literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of DBT skills in managing emotional dysregulation and reducing mood disorder symptoms among adolescents. Through meticulous analysis of existing research, this review highlights the substantial impact of DBT interventions in decreasing the frequency and intensity of maladaptive behaviors associated with emotional dysregulation. Drawing from studies involving 908 adolescents aged 12 to 18, compelling evidence suggests notable improvements in mood and related symptoms following participation in DBT skills programs. These findings underscore the potential of DBT interventions as valuable resources in supporting adolescents through their emotional challenges. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the urgent need to integrate DBT approaches into mental health interventions tailored to the unique needs of this vulnerable population. Overall, this review contributes to the growing body of literature on adolescent mental health, providing insights into the efficacy of DBT skills in promoting emotional regulation and enhancing overall well-being during this critical developmental phase.

Environmental damage is a negative effect of human activities. The young generation is saddled with the burden of environmental damage left by the previous generations and must take on a role as an agent of change in improving the environment. This study analyses the pro-environmental behaviour of Indonesian students, the factors affecting such behaviour, and efforts to improve those behaviours. This research uses a quantitative approach with survey methods. Four hundred seventy (470) students in the department of geography and department of geography education from various public and private universities in Indonesia have participated as research respondents. The research instrument used was a questionnaire employing the Likert scale. The research variables were environmental knowledge (X1), environmental responsibility (X2), value-belief--norm (X3), environmental education (X4), and pro-environmental behaviour (Y). Data were analysed using path analysis through partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) software version 3. Findings revealed high levels of pro-environmental behaviour, affected by environmental knowledge, environmental responsibility, value-belief-norm, and environmental education having convincing positive effects on forming environmental behaviour.

While the COVID-19 pandemic forced the rapid development of adaptations in educational systems, these innovations often disappeared as schools returned to so-called pre-pandemic normalcy. This essay explores the role of the Education Doctorate (EdD) programs in equipping candidates with the necessary tools to foster sustained change within their institutions, even in the face of limited power. Drawing from the metaphor of the Rider and the Elephant, this essay proposes specific practices within the EdD framework to support students in appealing to both logical reasoning and emotional engagement to drive change. By aligning the Rider (conscious thinking) with the Elephant (unconscious emotions) and creating a conducive path (environment), lasting behavioral change can be achieved. Additionally, the essay highlights the importance of recognizing the interplay between educational research and the practical realities of classroom instruction, emphasizing how EdD graduates can bridge the gap between education research claims and local education system needs.

This paper presents an exploratory evaluation of pilot nutrition education programs, Plan Shop Save Cook (PSSC). Behavior change between two nutrition education programs, Buy Eat Live Healthy (BELH; n=92 and PSSC; n=42), was examined using pre- and post-program questionnaire responses. Both programs resulted in significant improvement in food resource management (FRM) behaviors; however, there was no significant difference in the amount of change between the programs. Qualitative data suggests participants perceived label reading as the most useful information provided in the PSSC programs. The current findings suggest short-term behavior change can be achieved with a limited dose program.

4-H academics responded to the COVID pandemic by rapidly adapting CDC and other resources for virtual delivery. A statewide epidemiology project was taught to 48 youth with the goal of minimizing fears and confusion, increasing prevention measures, leveraging current topics for education, and bolstering the social-emotional health of youth participants. Results indicated that youth enjoyed the project and adopted behaviors to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, such as increased mask-wearing.

Girls' education is affected by forms of violence and teenage pregnancy, resulting in school dropouts. Governments have established Behavior Change Communication (BCC) approaches to address these issues, but with limited success. This study assessed teenage girls' perceived views on the best BCC strategies for eradicating these education issues. It explored their understanding of current approaches, identified the most effective methods, and suggested improvements for girls' education. Using an exploratory design, data were collected through interview guides and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 105 teenage girls, 10 parents, and 5 key informants. Various sampling techniques were employed, and data were analyzed thematically. Results on current approaches indicated strategies such as economic empowerment, parental involvement, media campaigns, counseling centers, reproductive health education, and disciplinary measures. The best and most effective approaches identified included testimony-telling, community committees for reproductive health education, access to educational materials, parental support, fostering self-dignity, and appropriate disciplinary actions. Suggestions for improving girls' education encompassed enhanced monitoring and evaluation, promotion of respectful language use, involvement of religious and community leaders, peer support systems, and fair disciplinary measures. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of effective approaches to addressing girls' education challenges and concludes that a well-coordinated, multi-stakeholder implementation of these strategies is essential for success.

Study habits drive a large portion of how university students study. Some of these habits are not effective in fostering academic achievement. To support students in breaking old, ineffective habits and forming new, effective study habits, an in-depth understanding of what students' study habits look like and how they are both formed and broken is needed. Therefore, in this study, we explored these aspects among first-year university students in six focus group discussions (N = 29). Using a thematic analysis approach, we clustered the data in five themes: "Goals Matter," 'Balancing Perceived Efficiency and Effectiveness when Studying," "Navigating Student Life: from Structured Routines to Self-Regulation Challenges," "the Quest for Effective Habits with Trying to Break Free From the Screen" as subtheme, and the "Motivation Roller Coaster." Findings suggest that students had different study habits depending on their goals. Students had quite accurate metacognitive knowledge about effective learning strategies for long-term learning, but often used other learning strategies they deemed most efficient in reaching their goals. Students indicated intentions to change, but did not prioritize change as their current habits enabled them to pass exams and change was not perceived as adding value. Fluctuations in motivation and transitioning to a self-regulated life hampered students' intentions to form new and break old habits. Next to insights into factors affecting students' behavioral change intentions, the findings suggest the importance of aligning assessment methods with life-long learning and supporting students in their long-term academic goal setting to prioritize study habits which target lasting learning to optimally foster their self-regulated learning.

Feeling loved by one's caregiver is essential for individual flourishing (i.e., high levels of psychological well-being in multiple dimensions). Although similar constructs are found to benefit adolescent well-being, research that directly tests parental love as a feeling from the recipient's perspective is rare. Historically, parental love has been measured using single-assessment methods and assumed to be a stable, trait-like characteristic; yet, like any feeling, it may fluctuate in meaningful ways on a day-to-day basis--the implications of which are unknown. Using a sample of 150 adolescents (59.3% female; ages 14-16), this study estimated "level" (person's mean level across days) and "instability" (fluctuations across days) of feeling loved by a caregiver across 21 days for each adolescent, and then examined their prospective effects on adolescent flourishing 1 year later. After controlling for demographics (adolescent age, gender, family income, and parent's sex) and variable baseline levels, feeling more loved by one's caregiver in daily life significantly predicted higher levels of flourishing in two global measures 1 year later. Moreover, "level" and "instability" of feeling loved by one's caregiver played different roles for different dimensions of flourishing: higher "levels" significantly predicted higher levels of autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth, whereas higher "instability" significantly predicted lower levels of positive relations with others and environmental mastery. Findings emphasized the importance of considering daily dynamics of feeling loved by one's caregiver and demonstrated that "level" (of feeling loved) is particularly important for intrapersonal aspects while "instability" is particularly important for interpersonal aspects of flourishing.

Three preregistered studies examined whether 5-year-old children cheat consistently or remain honest across multiple math tests. We observed high consistency in both honesty and cheating. All children who cheated on the first test continued cheating on subsequent tests, with shorter cheating latencies over time. In contrast, 77% of initially honest children maintained honesty despite repeated failure to complete the tests successfully. A brief integrity intervention helped initially honest children remain honest but failed to dissuade initially cheating children from cheating. These findings demonstrate that cheating emerges early and persists strongly in young children, underscoring the importance of early prevention efforts. They also suggest that bolstering honesty from the start may be more effective than attempting to remedy cheating after it has occurred.

The school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have had significant side effects, particularly on the psychological well-being of pupils. This situation poses great challenges for teachers in schools. At the same time, teacher education students have to be prepared for this situation by being trained to deal with difficult situations and pupils with symptoms of psychological disorders. Furthermore, they need to adequately address the increasing heterogeneity in terms of their pupils' learning standards. To meet these challenges, the teaching project "CaBire" was called into being. As part of this project, teacher education students first receive theoretical input to act as socio-psychological coaches for children. After the training phase, students offer support to pupils at schools. This practical phase is accompanied by coaching-supervision seminars led by psychology teachers at the university. Both the practical phase, as well as the accompanying seminars at the university can be credited to teacher education students' studies. Here we report a good-practice example and an evaluation of this teaching concept based on data of a mixed-method design. The results are promising and point towards a beneficial program for both teacher education students and pupils.

The COVID-19 pandemic and related school closures greatly interfered in students' social, emotional, and academic development creating behavioral struggles after returning to school. This concurrent mixed-methods study examined teacher perceptions of student behavioral change and social-emotional learning (SEL) during the return to in-person schooling in fall 2021. Teachers (N = 120) from a Midwestern state completed online surveys consisting of both closed and open-ended questions about student's social, emotional, and academic behavior. Teachers also responded to questions about SEL program implementation in their schools before and during the pandemic. Teachers overwhelmingly reported worsened student behavior since returning to school. Content analysis revealed academic motivation struggles were most often reported, followed by social and emotional struggles, respectively. Additionally, teachers from schools with SEL programs were significantly less likely to report academic motivation struggles. Findings suggest that SEL programs may help mitigate COVID-related academic motivation struggles. Possibilities for future research on student behavior and SEL as the pandemic recedes are discussed.

Embedding musicians' occupational health training in music education curricula is widely recommended due to the well-documented high prevalence of performance-related health problems (PRHPs) among musicians across their lifespan. A scoping review was conducted to examine the range of evidence from implementations of musicians' health education programs, regarding the maintenance of hearing, musculoskeletal, psychological, and vocal health, as well as injury prevention strategies to minimize the risk of PRHP. Eligible sources of evidence included published and unpublished studies reporting occupational health education programs (which may have incorporated information on physical or psychological health, exercise, or somatic movement training) implemented with pre-tertiary and tertiary music students and teachers. Studies reporting stand-alone psychological health education were excluded. Key characteristics from included studies were extracted and charted. Data charts outline commonalities across the reported results, including physical, psychological, educational, and behavioral change outcome measures. Out of 46 records included for data extraction, 35 reported programs with tertiary-aged music students, seven reported programs with pre-tertiary-aged music students, two reported programs with music teachers, and two reported systematic reviews. Reported benefits from this research with both pre-tertiary and tertiary music students suggest that musicians' health education and injury prevention strategies reduce self-reported playing-related pain and music performance anxiety. However, future implementation studies need to address identified challenges such as effective behavior change and the enablers and barriers to the long-term adoption of strategies for optimal music performance and health outcomes. This review highlights the need for further research into designing and embedding musicians' health education into all music training settings, including more implementations with pre-tertiary music students, as well as training to support the professional development needs of instrumental and vocal teachers.

Objective: Psychoactive substance use is prevalent among young people in Nigeria. However, the dearth of accessible and good-quality treatment for substance use disorders in Nigeria creates a treatment gap. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a substance use prevention education programme (SUPEP) for young people in Nigeria. Design: A quasi-experimental study using a pre- post-test was conducted. The experimental group (n = 100) and comparison group (n = 100) comprised students in four senior secondary schools. Data were collected using a validated self-report questionnaire and the WHO Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) version 3.0. Paired sample t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and generalised and linear mixed models (GLMM) were used for data analysis. Setting: Two hundred young people aged 14-20 years prone to substance use participated in SUPEP in four secondary schools in Enugu State, Southeast, Nigeria. Results: Students' psychoactive substance knowledge and substance use attitudes in the experimental group (p < 0.001) improved significantly post-intervention. ANCOVA results showed that the mean psychoactive substance knowledge score increased significantly between the time points, F(1, 123) = 8.89, p = 0.003. In contrast, mean psychoactive substance use attitudes reduced significantly between the same time points, F(1, 123) = 12.390, p = 0.001. However, no significant difference between the groups was observed in the mean psychoactive substance use behaviour post-intervention. Conclusion: The school-based SUPEP increases psychoactive substance knowledge and improves attitudes. However, the intervention did not reduce substance use among adolescents.

Sociology plays a key role in empathy development, which is central to addressing complex social problems. However, little is known about what types of courses work best to enhance empathy. In parallel, sociological animal studies (SAS) has evolved as a relatively new subfield focused on assessing human and animal relationships. SAS research suggests that our interactions with animals enhance empathy development. Combining these literatures, we assess if SAS compared to non-SAS courses impact affective and cognitive empathy for humans and animals differently. Findings reveal that students who take SAS courses demonstrate greater postcourse human and animal empathy even when controlling for precourse levels of empathy and other factors that drive empathy development. Although SAS remains on the periphery of the discipline, this study suggests that it should be a central component of the sociological curriculum.

Our school career culminates in a set of exam results, but if students want to do well, attending lessons is not enough: the implicit expectation is that all students will reinforce learning independently outside of the classroom. Really effective learners employ effective independent study techniques, but when, how and where do they learn to do this? Currently there is no coherent consensus on how we should teach young people to become effective independent learners. Most schools, as far as it is possible to know given the scant research, do not teach study skills effectively -- using one off sessions or PSHE sessions simply to teach strategies (Purdie & Hattie, 1999 & a very unscientific social media poll, 2024). Many students, as they move through the educational system, need to make significant behavioural changes to the way they learn independently. To support students in this I have developed a curriculum that draws on a wide range of psychological domains to help students not only learn effective study techniques, but also to help them develop more helpful study habits. Whilst ever evolving and difficult to evaluate, the feedback from students and parents has convinced me that the course curriculum is impactful, enabling students to tackle independent study, revision and exams with confidence.

Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience challenges with social skill interactions that may affect their quality of life. Given that parents are often the most frequent and constant presence in their child's life, parents serve a vital role in their child's social and behavioral development. For this reason, children may substantially benefit from effective and efficient parent-implemented behavior intervention to teach social skills. Using a multiple-baseline design, the Cool versus Not Cool (CNC) behavior intervention was taught via telehealth to U.S. three parents of adolescent males with ASD. Parents then subsequently implemented the CNC intervention to teach parent-selected social skills to their children. For all three parent-adolescent dyads, the CNC behavior intervention was implemented with fidelity by parents, and adolescents showed intervention gains. Findings maintained and generalized during probes and social validity outcomes reported by both parents and adolescents were favorable.

Background: Religious institutions play a crucial role in health promotion and hold significant influence in the public health field. Aim: The aim of this review is to examine outcomes of health-promoting interventions involving the use of mosques as the intervention venue, its role in promoting health behavior change, and the role of theory in each intervention. Methods: A scoping review was conducted across 17 databases for relevant publications published up to and including August 2023 that involved the use of mosques as the intervention venue. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Results: The studies featured a wide range of interventions. However, only eight of these studies integrated theoretical frameworks into their approaches, indicating a need for more structured guidance in this field. These theoretical frameworks included Participatory Action Research (PAR), the theory of planned behavior, behavior-change constructs, the patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) framework, and prolonged exposure techniques within Islamic principles. The review identified three main health-focused intervention categories: mental health, prevention, and communication, each providing valuable insights into initiatives within Muslim communities. Conclusions: This review underscores the significance of inclusive and culturally sensitive health interventions, emphasizing the effectiveness of faith-based approaches in improving health outcomes, promoting positive health behaviors, and addressing communication and cultural barriers. The reviews findings stress the need for further research that incorporates theoretical frameworks and tailored interventions to meet the specific cultural needs of these communities, ultimately contributing to enhanced well-being within them.

Despite the widespread popularity of online reading challenges on platforms like Goodreads and The StoryGraph, research on this phenomenon has been mostly absent. This article addresses this gap by examining the motivations of adolescent participants in reading challenges, the outcomes of their participation and the implications for their reading routines. Drawing upon semi-structured interviews with 20 participants aged 15-20 years, the article shows that motivations range from a desire for social engagement within a book-loving peer group to self-challenge. A common thread is that reading challenges serve as a catalyst for increased volitional reading by adolescents, accompanied by changes in their reading habits. Furthermore, analysis of the responses reveals that these evolving reading practices are perceived by participants as both stimulating and self-directed. However, the research also underscores the significant role played by algorithms on platforms like Goodreads in influencing reading routines. The study also shows that some participants in online reading challenges are guided by social motivation, although most of them experience social motives as secondary to their individual and intrinsic desire to read more. At the same time, some individuals partaking in online reading challenges prove susceptible to negative perceptions from others. Hence, this research foregrounds crucial tensions in online reading cultures adolescents engage in, specifically those between autonomy and algorithm and sociocentrism and egocentrism.

Hazing prevention and education efforts continue to evolve in response to changing student behavior. The organic and anomic nature of hazing is deeply embedded in higher education, permeating across campus reinforced by cultural norms and institutional practices. While numerous approaches attempt to disrupt hazing, public health approaches, particularly those that involve and engage students, offer new promise in facilitating sustained culture change against hazing.
