Abstract

Accurate multiplicities of prompt fission neutrons emitted in neutron-induced fission on a large energy range are essential for fundamental and applied nuclear physics. Measuring them to high precision for radioactive fissioning nuclides is, however, an experimental challenge. In this work, we extract the average prompt-neutron multiplicity emitted in the 239 Pu (n, f) reaction as a function of the incident-neutron energy, over the range 0.7-700 MeV. We used a novel technique, which allowed us to minimize and correct for the main sources of bias and thus achieve unprecedented precision. At low energies, our data validate, for the first time, the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data evaluation with an independent measurement and reduce the evaluated uncertainty by up to 60%. This work opens up the possibility of measuring, with high precision, prompt fission neutron multiplicities on highly radioactive nuclei relevant for energy production.

Abstract

Prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) are crucial to any neutronic simulation of critical nuclear systems. An experimental setup dedicated to the measurements of PFNS of very high accuracy was developed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) some ten years ago. It allows for the measurement of PFNS for neutron induced fission at the Weapon Neutron Research (WNR) neutron source of the LANSCE. A measurement of the PFNS from the 235U(n,f) reaction was realized recently and is currently analyzed. Preliminary results are presented here and are compared to present nuclear data evaluations.

Abstract

Low energy fission of 234,235,236,238U and 237,238Np radioactive beams, provided by the GSI/FRS facility, has been studied using the R3B/SOFIA setup. The latter allows, on an event-by-event basis, to simultaneously identify, in terms of their mass and atomic numbers, the fissioning nucleus in coincidence with both fission fragments after prompt-neutron emission. This presentation reports on new results on elemental, isobaric and isotopic yields.

Abstract

In the last decades, measurements of spallation, fragmentation and Coulex induced fission reactions in inverse kinematics have provided valuable data to accurately investigate the fission dynamics and nuclear structure at large deformations of a large variety of stable and non-stable heavy nuclei. The collected data were used to constrain dynamic and nuclear structure parameters of different de-excitation models, such as ABLA and GEF, but the data can also be used to constrain the parameterizations describing the pre-fragment properties after the nuclear collision, such as the angular momentum gained by the pre-fragment. In this work, the fissioning system yields are compared to calculations assuming different parameterizations for modeling the angular momentum gained by the compound nuclei. Our findings indicate that the parameterizations utilized by abrasion models clearly underestimate the angular momentum, resulting in the underestimation of the production of lighter fissioning systems.

Abstract

A novel detector has been used, in order to perform measurements of spontaneous fission to α-decay ratios for 240Pu, 242Pu and 252Cf isotopes. The detectors are based on the well-known technique of liquid scintillating counting. The principle and advantages of the use of such detectors in nuclear physics is discussed. The application to the characterization of spontaneous fission is described and it is demonstrated that highly precise measurements are possible, and that the main limit is due to the isotopic content knowledge of the measured samples.

Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

A new prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) measurement in the 238U(n,f) reaction was performed at LANSCE/WNR facility. Evaluated data show discrepancies on the low (below 1 MeV) and high (above 5 MeV) energy parts in the PFNS for different major and minor actinides. The goal is to improve these measurements in a wide range of incident energy. The energy of the incoming neutron, inducing the fission, and the prompt neutron energies, are measured by time-of-flight method. A dedicated fission chamber was developed, in order to improve alpha-fission discrimination, timing resolution, actinide mass, and to reduce the amount of neutron scattering. To detect prompt neutrons, the 54 Chi-Nu scintillator cells array were surrounding the fission chamber. High statistics were recorded during this experiment, allowing a precise study of PFNS behavior as a function of incident neutron energy, from 1 MeV to 200 MeV. This experiment also showed that all the new tools developed to improve PFNS measurements are performing. Therefore, measurements of PFNS with others actinides such as 239Pu are planned.

Abstract

The knowledge of prompt fission γ-ray emission has been of major interest in reactor physics since few years, but it is also important in the understanding of the fission process. We present here measurements of prompt γ-ray spectra emitted in the fission of 238U. A simple experimental method was used to measure the prompt fission gamma-ray spectrum up to 10 MeV. In this approach, the gamma-rays are measured with a bismuth germanate (BGO) detector which offers two significant advantages with respect to other gamma-ray detectors: a high peak-to-total ratio and a high efficiency. The prompt fission neutrons are rejected by the time-of-flight technique between the BGO detector and a fission trigger given by a fission chamber. Prompt fission gamma-ray spectra were measured for 1.7, 5.2 and 15.6 MeV incoming neutron energies at the CEA, DAM, DIF Van de Graaff accelerator.

Abstract

233U plays the essential role of fissile nucleus in the Th-U fuel cycle. A particularity of 233U is its small neutron capture cross-section which is about one order of magnitude lower than the fission cross-section on average. Therefore, the accuracy in the measurement of the 233U capture cross-section essentially relies on efficient capture-fission discrimination thus a combined setup of fission and γ-detectors is needed. At CERN n_TOF the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) coupled with compact fission detectors is used. Previously used MicroMegas (MGAS) detectors showed significant γ-background issues above 100 eV coming from the copper mesh. A new measurement campaign of the 233U capture cross-section and alpha ratio is planned at the CERN n_TOF facility. For this measurement, a novel cylindrical multi ionization cell chamber was developed in order to provide a compact solution for 14 active targets read out by 8 anodes. Due to the high specific activity of 233U fast timing properties are required and achieved with the use of customized electronics and the very fast ionizing gas CF4 together with a high electric field strength. This paper describes the new fission chamber and the results of the first tests with neutrons at GELINA proving that it is suitable for the 233U measurement.

Abstract

Prompt fission neutron spectra from $^{239}$Pu($n,f$) were measured for incident neutron energies from $0.7$ to $700\,$MeV at the Weapons Neutron Research facility (WNR) of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. A newly designed high-efficiency fission chamber was coupled to the highly segmented Chi-Nu array to detect neutrons emitted in fission events. The double time-of-flight technique was used to deduce the incident-neutron energies from the spallation target and the outgoing-neutron energies from the fission chamber. Prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) were measured with respect to $^{252}$Cf spontaneous fission down to $200\,$keV and up to about $12\,$MeV for all the incident neutron energies with typical uncertainties well below $2\%$ up to about $10\,$MeV outgoing-neutron energy. The general trend of PFNS is well reproduced by JEFF3.3 and ENDF-B\VIII.0 evaluations. Discrepancies were however observed for the low-energy part of the spectra, where evaluations overestimate the number of emitted neutrons. Neutron multiplicities and average kinetic energies as a function of incident-neutron energy are obtained experimentally with reported uncertainties below $0.4\%$. Neutron multiplicities disagree with some older datasets above $6\,$ MeV, indicating the need of using a high-efficiency fission detector, which does not bias the data. The measured mean kinetic energies agree with the most recent data. Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. Abstract

With a new detector setup and the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we discovered 57 new isotopes in the atomic number range of 60$\leq Z \leq 78$: \nuc{159-161}{Nb}, \nuc{160-163}{Pm}, \nuc{163-166}Sm, \nuc{167-168}{Eu}, \nuc{167-171}{Gd}, \nuc{169-171}{Tb}, \nuc{171-174}{Dy}, \nuc{173-176}{Ho}, \nuc{176-178}{Er}, \nuc{178-181}{Tm}, \nuc{183-185}{Yb}, \nuc{187-188}{Lu}, \nuc{191}{Hf}, \nuc{193-194}{Ta}, \nuc{196-197}{W}, \nuc{199-200}{Re}, \nuc{201-203}{Os}, \nuc{204-205}{Ir} and \nuc{206-209}{Pt}. The new isotopes have been unambiguously identified in reactions with a $^{238}$U beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/u. The isotopic production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured and compared with predictions of different model calculations. In general, the ABRABLA and COFRA models agree better than a factor of two with the new data, whereas the semiempirical EPAX model deviates much more. Projectile fragmentation is the dominant reaction creating the new isotopes, whereas fission contributes significantly only up to about the element holmium., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

International audience; Prompt-fission-neutron spectra from Pu239 (n,f) were measured with respect to Cf252 spontaneous fission for incident neutron energies from 0.7 to 700MeV at the Weapons Neutron Research facility (WNR) of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. A newly designed high-efficiency fission chamber was coupled to the highly segmented Chi-Nu neutron liquid scintillator array to detect neutrons emitted in fission events. The double time-of-flight technique was used to deduce the incident neutron energies from the spallation target and the outgoing-neutron energies from the fission chamber. Prompt-fission-neutron spectra (PFNS) were measured with respect to Cf252 spontaneous fission down to 200keV and up to about 12MeV for all the incident neutron energies with typical total uncertainties well below 2% up to about 7-MeV outgoing-neutron energy. The general trend of PFNS is well reproduced by JEFF3.3 and ENDF evaluations, although a better agreement is found with JEFF3.3. Discrepancies were observed for the low-energy part of the spectra, especially around the opening of the second-, third- and fourth-chance fission. Neutron average kinetic energies as a function of incident neutron energy are obtained experimentally with reported total uncertainties below 0.5%. The measured values agree with the most recent data. The trend is fairly well reproduced by the JEFF3.3 evaluation, although it fails to reproduce the experimental values within their uncertainties.

Abstract

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the Li-7(p, n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

Abstract

International audience; Relative values of the neutron-induced fission cross section σ(n,f) of 242Pu have been measured with respect to the standard 1H(n,p) elastic scattering cross section, at average energies of 1.0, 1.4, and 1.9MeV. The measurements are part of an international effort to reduce uncertainties and provide independent nuclear data relevant for fast-spectrum reactors. The shape of the measured cross section is in good agreement with data from Tovesson et al. [Phys. Rev. C 79, 014613 (2009)] and with the most recent data from Matei et al. [Phys. Rev. C 95, 024606 (2017)], but disagrees with the shapes of ENDF/B-VII.1 and JEFF3.2 evaluations. Absolute values of σ(n,f), obtained under some assumptions, indicate an overestimation of σ(n,f) in the evaluated libraries at 1.0 and 1.4MeV, while a good agreement is found with ENDF/B-VII.1 at 1.9MeV. A careful analysis of the impact of scattered neutrons and anisotropy of the fission fragment angular distribution has been performed. The measurement of the neutron flux by means of a proton-recoil detector is discussed. A comprehensive study of corrections applied to the data, of associated uncertainties, and of correlations between the measurements at the different energies is presented.

Abstract

For the first time the g factor of an isotope beyond N = 20 near the 'island of inversion' has been measured. A Al-34 radioactive beam was produced in a one-neutron pickup reaction on a S-36 primary beam at 77.5 MeV/u, providing a large spin-polarization for application of the P-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (beta-NMR) method. The measured g factor of Al-34 vertical bar g vertical bar = 0.539(2), combined with results from earlier beta-decay studies, allows to firmly assign a ground state spin/parity 4(-). Comparison to large scale shell model calculations reveals that a dominant amount of intruder components is needed in the Al-34 wave function to account for the observed large magnetic moment mu = (+)2.156(16)mu(N). This reveals Z = 13 to be a true 'transition number' between the normal Z = 14 Si isotopes and the abnormal Z = 12 Mg isotopes. The sensitivity of this odd-odd ground state dipole moment to the N = 20, as well as the N = 28 gap, reveals that both are significantly reduced, despite Z = 13 being outside the conventional island of inversion. Abstract

Using the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we have discovered 60 new neutron-rich isotopes in the atomic number range of 60 <= Z <= 78. The new isotopes were unambiguously identified in reactions with a U-238 beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/nucleon. The production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured down to the pico-barn level and compared with predictions of different model calculations. For elements above hafnium fragmentation is the dominant reaction mechanism which creates the new isotopes, whereas fission plays a dominant role for the production of the new isotopes up to thulium.
