The Magellanic Clouds (MCs) are the Milky Way's most massive dwarf satellites. As they also represent the closest pair of galaxies in an ongoing tidal interaction, while simultaneously infalling into the Milky Way halo, they provide a unique opportunity to study in detail an ongoing three-body encounter. We present the ``YMCA (Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again) survey: probing the outer regions of the Magellanic system with VST'' based on deep optical photometry carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). YMCA targeted 110 square degrees, in the g and i filters, in the periphery of both the MCs, including a long strip in between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometry of YMCA is sufficiently deep (50\% complete down to $g \simeq 23.5-24.0$~mag) to allow for a detailed analysis of main-sequence stars in regions of the MCs remained relatively unexplored at these faint magnitudes. The resulting colour-magnitude diagrams reveal that the outskirts of the MCs are predominantly characterized by intermediate-age and old stellar populations, with limited or negligible evidence of recent star formation. The analysis of the age distribution of star clusters (SCs) within the surveyed area, both already known and newly discovered candidates, hints at a close fly-by between the LMC and SMC that occurred $\simeq 2.5-3.0$~Gyr ago, in agreement with previous results. We present new deep, wide-field Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) $g$ and $r$ imaging data from the Smallest Scale of Hierarchy Survey (SSH) revealing previously undetected tidal features and stellar streams in the outskirts of six dwarf irregular galaxies (NGC 5238, UGC 6456, UGC 6541, UGC 7605, UGC 8638, and UGC 8760) with stellar masses in the range $1.2 \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ to $1.4 \times 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. The six dwarfs are located 1-2 Mpc away from large galaxies, implying that the observed distortions are unlikely to be due to tidal effects from a nearby, massive companion. At the dwarfs' distances of $\sim$3-4 Mpc, the identified tidal features are all resolved into individual stars in the LBT images and appear to be made of a population older than 1-2 Gyr, excluding the possibility that they result from irregular and asymmetric star formation episodes that are common in gas-rich dwarf galaxies. The most plausible explanation is that we are witnessing the hierarchical merging assembling of these dwarfs with their satellite populations, a scenario also supported by the peculiar morphology and disturbed velocity field of their HI component. From the SSH sample we estimate a fraction of late type dwarfs showing signs of merging with satellites of $\sim$13\%, in agreement with other recent independent studies and theoretical predictions within the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological framework., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures including one in the appendix, accepted for publication by A&A

The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. The High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS) is a facility instrument that we plan to propose for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), following the initial presentation at the VLT 2030 workshop held at ESO in June 2019. HRMOS provides a combination of capabilities that are essential to carry out breakthrough science across a broad range of active research areas from stellar astrophysics and exoplanet studies to Galactic and Local Group archaeology. HRMOS fills a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000 - 80000) combined with multi-object (20-100) capabilities and long term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (10m/s). Initial designs predict that a SNR~100 will be achievable in about one hour for a star with mag(AB) = 15, while with the same exposure time a SNR~ 30 will be reached for a star with mag(AB) = 17. The combination of high resolution and multiplexing with wavelength coverage extending to relatively blue wavelengths (down to 380\,nm), makes HRMOS a spectrograph that will push the boundaries of our knowledge and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future. We report on the discovery of a significant and compact over-density of old and metal-poor stars in the KiDS survey (data release 4). The discovery is confirmed by deeper HSC-SSC data revealing the old Main Sequence Turn-Off of a stellar system located at a distance from the sun of $D_{\sun}=145^{+14}_{-13}$~kpc in the direction of the Sextans constellation. The system has absolute integrated magnitude ($M_V=-3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$), half-light radius ($r_h=193^{+61}_{-46}$~pc), and ellipticity ($e=0.46^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$) typical of Ultra Faint Dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The central surface brightness is near the lower limits of known local dwarf galaxies of similar integrated luminosity, as expected for stellar systems that escaped detection until now. The distance of the newly found system suggests that it is likely a satellite of our own Milky Way, consequently, we tentatively baptise it Sextans~II (KiDS-UFD-1)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. In this study, we report the results of Fe, Mg, Al, and Si abundances analysis for a sample of 439 stars in Omega Centauri, using high-resolution spectra obtained with the VLT/FLAMES multi-object spectrograph. Our analysis reveals the presence of four distinct Fe populations, with the main peak occurring at low metallicity, consistent with previous literature findings. We observe a discrete and pronounced Mg-Al anti-correlation, which exhibits variations in shape and extension as a function of metallicity. Specifically, this anti-correlation is present in stars with metallicities lower than approximately -1.3 dex, while it becomes less evident or absent for higher [Fe/H] values. Additionally, we detect (anti-) correlations between Mg and Si, and between Al and Si, whose extensions also vary with metallicity, similar to the Mg-Al anti-correlation. These results suggest that the MgAl cycle plays a crucial role in the formation of multiple populations in Omega Centauri, with the presence of all (anti-) correlations at metallicities lower than -1.3 dex providing evidence for the burning of Mg at very high temperatures (> 10^8 K), at least in the metal-poor regime. Furthermore, we observe a clear trend of stars with [Al/Fe] > +0.5 dex as a function of metallicity, confirming for the first time the existence of the two channels of Al production and destruction. This evidence can help to provide further constraints on the potential nature of the polluters responsible for the observed chemical anomalies in this stellar system. Finally, we find that the two most metal-poor populations identified in our sample are compatible with null or very small metallicity dispersion and we discuss how this result fit into a scenario where Omega Centauri is the remnant of a disrupted nucleated dwarf galaxy., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in A&A

We used the spectro-photometric information of ~219 million stars from Gaia's DR3 to calculate synthetic, narrow-band, metallicity-sensitive CaHK magnitudes that mimic the observations of the Pristine survey, a survey of photometric metallicities of Milky Way (MW) stars that has been mapping >6,500 deg^2 of the northern sky with CFHT since 2015. These synthetic magnitudes were used for an absolute recalibration of the deeper Pristine photometry and, combined with broadband Gaia information, synthetic and Pristine CaHK magnitudes were used to estimate photometric metallicities over the whole sky. The resulting metallicity catalogue is accurate down to [Fe/H]~-3.5 and is particularly suited for the exploration of the metal-poor MW ([Fe/H]<-1.0). We make available here the catalogue of synthetic CaHK_syn magnitudes for all stars with BP/RP information in Gaia DR3, as well as an associated catalogue of more than ~30 million photometric metallicities for high S/N FGK stars. This paper further provides the first public data release of the Pristine catalogue in the form of higher quality recalibrated Pristine CaHK magnitudes and photometric metallicities for all stars in common with the BP/RP spectro-photometric information in Gaia DR3. When available, the much deeper Pristine data greatly enhance the quality of the derived metallicities, in particular at the faint end of the catalogue (G_BP > 16). Combined, both photometric metallicity catalogues include more than two million metal-poor star candidates ([Fe/H]_phot<-1.0) as well as more than 200,000 and ~8,000 very and extremely metal-poor candidates ([Fe/H]_phot<-2.0 and <-3.0, respectively). Finally, we show that these metallicity catalogues can be used efficiently, among other applications to hunt for the most metal-poor stars, and to study how the structure of the MW varies with metallicity., Comment: 31 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. One of the last remaining frontiers in optical/near-infrared observational astronomy is the low surface brightness regime (LSB, V-band surface brightness, $\mu_V>$ 27 AB mag/arcsec$^2$). These are the structures at very low stellar surface densities, largely unseen by even current wide-field surveys such as the Legacy Survey. Studying this domain promises to be transformative for our understanding of star formation in low-mass galaxies, the hierarchical assembly of galaxies and galaxy clusters, and the nature of dark matter. It is thus essential to reach depths beyond $\mu_V$ = 30 AB mag/arcsec$^2$ to detect the faintest extragalactic sources, such as dwarf galaxies and the stellar halos around galaxies and within galaxy clusters. The High Latitude Wide Area Survey offers a unique opportunity to statistically study the LSB universe at unprecedented depths in the IR over an area of $\sim$2000 square degrees. The high spatial resolution will minimize source confusion, allowing an unbiased characterization of LSB structures, including the identification of stars in nearby LSB galaxies and globular clusters. In addition, the combination of Roman with other upcoming deep imaging observatories (such as Rubin) will provide multi-wavelength coverage to derive photometric redshifts and infer the stellar populations of LSB objects., Comment: White paper submitted to the call for input for the Roman Space Telescope's Core Community Surveys

Through adaptive optics (AO) imaging with the SOUL+LUCI instrument at the Large Binocular Telescope we were able to resolve, for the first time, individual stars in the gas-rich galaxy DDO68 C. This system was already suggested to be interacting with the extremely metal poor dwarf DDO68, but its nature has remained elusive so far because of the presence of a bright foreground star close to its line of sight, that hampers a detailed study of its stellar population and distance. In our study, we turned this interloper star into an opportunity to have a deeper insight on DDO68 C, using it as a guide star for the AO correction. Although the new data do not allow for a direct distance measurement through the red giant branch tip method, the combined analysis of the resolved-star color-magnitude diagram, of archival GALEX FUV and NUV photometry, and of H$\alpha$ data provides a self-consistent picture in which DDO68 C is at the same $\sim$13 Mpc distance as its candidate companion DDO68. These results indicate that DDO68 is a unique case of a low mass dwarf, less massive than the Magellanic Clouds, interacting with three satellites (DDO68 C and two previously confirmed accreting systems), providing useful constraints on cosmological models and a potential explanation for its anomalous extremely low metallicity., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJL

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. We present metallicity and radial velocity for 450 bonafide members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, measured from high resolution (R~18000) FLAMES@VLT spectra. The targets were carefully selected (a) to sample the core of the main body of Sgr dSph while avoiding contamination from the central stellar nucleus, and (b) to prevent any bias on the metallicity distribution, by selecting targets based on their Gaia parallax and proper motions. All the targets selected in this way were confirmed as radial velocity members. We used this sample to derive the first metallicity distribution of the core of the Sgr dSph virtually unaffected by metallicity biases. The observed distribution ranges from [Fe/H]~ -2.3 to [Fe/H]~ 0.0, with a strong, symmetric and relatively narrow peak around [Fe/H]~ -0.5 and a weak, extended metal-poor tail, with only 13.8 +/- 1.9% of the stars having [Fe/H]< -1.0. We confirm previous evidence of correlations between chemical and kinematical properties of stars in the core of Sgr. In our sample stars with [Fe/H]>= -0.6 display a lower velocity dispersion and a higher rotation amplitude than those with [Fe/H]< -0.6, confirming previous suggestions of a disk/halo structure for the progenitor of the system., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by A&A

We discuss five blue stellar systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster, analogous to the enigmatic object SECCO 1 (AGC 226067). These objects were identified based on their optical and UV morphology and followed up with HI observations with the VLA (and GBT), MUSE/VLT optical spectroscopy, and HST imaging. These new data indicate that one system is a distant group of galaxies. The remaining four are extremely low mass ($M_\ast \sim 10^5 \; \mathrm{M_\odot}$), are dominated by young, blue stars, have highly irregular and clumpy morphologies, are only a few kpc across, yet host an abundance of metal-rich, $12 + \log (\mathrm{O/H}) > 8.2$, HII regions. These high metallicities indicate that these stellar systems formed from gas stripped from much more massive galaxies. Despite the young age of their stellar populations, only one system is detected in HI, while the remaining three have minimal (if any) gas reservoirs. Furthermore, two systems are surprisingly isolated and have no plausible parent galaxy within $\sim$30' ($\sim$140 kpc). Although tidal stripping cannot be conclusively excluded as the formation mechanism of these objects, ram pressure stripping more naturally explains their properties, in particular their isolation, owing to the higher velocities, relative to the parent system, that can be achieved. Therefore, we posit that most of these systems formed from ram pressure stripped gas removed from new infalling cluster members, and survived in the intracluster medium long enough to become separated from their parent galaxies by hundreds of kiloparsecs, and that they thus represent a new type of stellar system., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present [K/Fe] abundance ratios for a sample of 450 stars in Omega Centauri, using high resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES@VLT. Abundances for Fe, Na and Mg were also derived. We detected intrinsic K variations in the analysed stars. Moreover, [K/Fe] shows a significant correlation with [Na/Fe] and anti-correlation with [Mg/Fe]. The presence of a clear-cut Mg-K anti-correlation makes Omega Centauri the third stellar system, after NGC 2419 and NGC 2808, hosting a sub-population of stars with [Mg/Fe]<0.0 dex, K-enriched in the case of Omega Centauri by ~0.3 dex with respect to the Mg-rich stars ([Mg/Fe]>0.0 dex). The correlation/anti-correlation between K and other light elements involved in chemical anomalies supports the idea that the spread in [K/Fe] can be associated to the same self-enrichment process typical of globular clusters. We suggest that significant variations in K abundances perhaps can be found in the most massive and/or metal-poor globular clusters as manifestation of an extreme self-enrichment process. Theoretical models face problems to explain the K production in globular clusters. Indeed, models where asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the Mg-K anti-correlation only qualitatively agree with the observations. Finally, we discovered a peculiar star with an extraordinary K overabundance ([K/Fe]=+1.60 dex) with respect to the other stars with similar [Mg/Fe]. We suggest that this K-rich star could be formed from the pure ejecta of AGB stars before dilution with pristine material., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

The C-19 stream is the most metal poor stellar system ever discovered, with a mean metallicity $[Fe/H] = -3.38\pm0.06$. Its low metallicity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}$ $<$ 0.18 at the 95\% confidence level) as well as variations in sodium abundances strongly suggest a globular cluster origin. In this work, we use VLT/UVES spectra of seven C-19 stars to derive more precise velocity measurements for member stars, and to identify two new members with radial velocities and metallicities consistent with the stream's properties. One of these new member stars is located 30 $\deg$ away from the previously identified body of C-19, implying that the stream is significantly more extended than previously known and that more members likely await discovery. In the main part of C-19, we measure a radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_v$ = 6.2$^{+2.0}_{-1.4}$ km s$^{-1}$ from nine members, and a stream width of 0.56$\deg\pm0.08\deg$, equivalent to $\sim$158 pc at a heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. These confirm that C-19 is comparatively hotter, dynamically, than other known globular cluster streams and shares the properties of faint dwarf galaxy streams. On the other hand, the variations in the Na abundances of the three newly observed bright member stars, the variations in Mg and Al for two of them, and the normal Ba abundance of the one star where it can be measured provide further evidence for a globular cluster origin. The Milky Way halo was predominantly formed by the merging of numerous progenitor galaxies. However, our knowledge of this process is still incomplete, especially in regard to the total number of mergers, their global dynamical properties and their contribution to the stellar population of the Galactic halo. Here, we uncover the Milky Way mergers by detecting groupings of globular clusters, stellar streams and satellite galaxies in action ($\mathbf{J}$) space. While actions fully characterize the orbits, we additionally use the redundant information on their energy ($\textit{E}$) to enhance the contrast between groupings. For this endeavour, we use $\textit{Gaia}$ EDR3 based measurements of $170$ globular clusters, $41$ streams and $46$ satellites to derive their $\mathbf{J}$ and $\textit{E}$. To detect groups, we use the $\texttt{ENLINK}$ software, coupled with a statistical procedure that accounts for the observed phase-space uncertainties of these objects. We detect a total of $N=6$ groups, including the previously known mergers $\textit{Sagittarius}$, $\textit{Cetus}$, $\textit{Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus}$, $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$, $\textit{Arjuna/Sequoia/I'itoi}$ and one new merger that we call $\textit{Pontus}$. All of these mergers, together, comprise $62$ objects ($\approx 25\%$ of our sample). We discuss their members, orbital properties and metallicity distributions. We find that the three most metal-poor streams of our Galaxy -- "C-19" ([Fe/H]$=-3.4$ dex), "Sylgr" ([Fe/H]$=-2.9$ dex) and "Phoenix" ([Fe/H]$=-2.7$ dex) -- are associated with $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$; showing it to be the most metal-poor merger. We use the photometric metallicities provided by the panoramic Pristine survey to study the veracity and derive the metallicities of the numerous stellar streams found by the application of the STREAMFINDER algorithm to the Gaia EDR3 data. All 26 streams present in Pristine show a clear metallicity distribution function, which provides an independent check of the reality of these structures, supporting the reliability of STREAMFINDER in finding streams and the power of Pristine to measure precise metallicities. We further present 6 candidate structures with coherent phase-space and metallicity signals that are very likely streams. The majority of studied streams are very metal-poor (14 structures with [Fe/H]<-2.0) and include 3 systems with [Fe/H]<-2.9 (C-11, C-19, and C-20). These streams could be the closest debris of low-luminosity dwarf galaxies or may have originated from globular clusters of significantly lower metallicity than any known current Milky Way globular cluster. Our study shows that the promise of the Gaia data for Galactic Archeology studies can be substantially strengthened by quality photometric metallicities, allowing us to peer back into the earliest epochs of the formation of our Galaxy and its stellar halo constituents., Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We combine the power of two stream-searching tools, STREAMFINDER and StarGO applied to the Gaia EDR3 data, to detect stellar debris belonging to the Cetus stream system that forms a complex, nearly polar structure around the Milky Way. In this work, we find the southern extensions of the northern Cetus stream as the Palca stream and a new southern stream, which overlap on the sky but have different distances. These two stream wraps extend over more than $\sim100\deg$ on the sky ($-60\deg<\delta<+40\deg$). The current N-body model of the system reproduces both wraps in the trailing arm. We also show that the Cetus system is confidently associated with the Triangulum/Pisces, Willka Yaku, and the recently discovered C-20 streams. The association with the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream is much weaker. All of these stellar debris are very metal-poor, comparable to the average metallicity of the southern Cetus stream with [Fe/H] = $-2.17\pm0.2$. The estimated stellar mass of the Cetus progenitor is at least $10^{5.6}\rm\,M_\odot$, compatible with Ursa Minor or Draco dwarf galaxies. The associated globular cluster with similar stellar mass, NGC 5824 very possibly was accreted in the same group infall. The multi-wrap Cetus stream is a perfect example of a dwarf galaxy that has undergone several periods of stripping, leaving behind debris at multiple locations in the halo. The full characterization of such systems is crucial to unravel the assembly history of the Milky Way and, as importantly, to provide nearby fossils to study ancient low-mass dwarf galaxies., Comment: accepted to ApJ. The two sources AGC 226178 and NGVS 3543, an extremely faint, clumpy, blue stellar system and a low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal, are adjacent systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster. Both have been studied in detail previously, with it being suggested that they are unrelated normal dwarf galaxies or that NGVS 3543 recently lost its gas through ram pressure stripping, and that AGC 226178 formed from this stripped gas. However, with HST ACS imaging we demonstrate that the stellar population of NGVS 3543 is inconsistent with being at the distance of the Virgo cluster, and that it is likely a foreground object at approximately 10 Mpc. Whereas the stellar population of AGC 226178 is consistent with it being a very young (10-100 Myr) object in the Virgo cluster. Through a re-analysis of the original ALFALFA HI detection we show that AGC 226178 likely formed from gas stripped from the nearby dwarf galaxy VCC 2034, a hypothesis strengthened by the high metallicity measured with MUSE VLT observations. However, it is unclear whether ram pressure or a tidal interaction is responsible for stripping the gas. AGC 226178 is one of at least five similar objects now known towards Virgo. These objects are all young and unlikely to remain visible for over ~500 Myr, suggesting that they are continually produced in the cluster., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

Chemical tagging is a powerful tool to reveal the origin of stars and globular clusters (GCs), especially when dynamics alone cannot provide robust answers. So far, mostly $\alpha$- and neutron capture elements have been used to distinguish stars born in the Milky Way (MW) from those born in external environments such as that of dwarf galaxies. Here, instead, we use iron-peak elements abundances to investigate the origin of a sample of metal-rich globular clusters. By homogeneously analyzing high-resolution UVES spectra of giant stars belonging to four metal-rich GCs (namely NGC 5927, NGC 6388, NGC 6441, NGC 6496), we find that while the $\alpha$-elements Si and Ca have similar abundance ratios for all the four GCs, and Ti and neutron capture elements (La, Ba and Eu) only show a marginal discrepancy, a stark difference is found when considering the abundances of some iron-peak elements (Sc, V and Zn). In particular, NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 have abundance ratios for these iron-peak elements significantly lower (by ~ 0.5 dex) than those measured in NGC 5927 and NGC 6496, which are clearly identified as born in-situ MW clusters through an analysis of their orbital properties. These measurements indicate that the environment in which these clusters formed is different, and provide robust evidence supporting an accreted origin from the same progenitor for NGC 6388 and NGC 6441., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Stellar streams produced from dwarf galaxies provide direct evidence of the hierarchical formation of the Milky Way. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of the "LMS-1" stellar stream, that we detect by searching for wide streams in the Gaia EDR3 dataset using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. This stream was recently discovered by Yuan et al. (2020). We detect LMS-1 as a $60\deg$ long stream to the north of the Galactic bulge, at a distance of $\sim 20$ kpc from the Sun, together with additional components that suggest that the overall stream is completely wrapped around the inner Galaxy. Using spectroscopic measurements from LAMOST, SDSS and APOGEE, we infer that the stream is very metal poor (${\rm \langle [Fe/H]\rangle =-2.1}$) with a significant metallicity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}=0.4$), and it possesses a large radial velocity dispersion (${\rm \sigma_v=20 \pm 4\,km\,s^{-1}}$). These estimates together imply that LMS-1 is a dwarf galaxy stream. The orbit of LMS-1 is close to polar, with an inclination of $75\deg$ to the Galactic plane. Both the orbit and metallicity of LMS-1 are remarkably similar to the globular clusters NGC 5053, NGC 5024 and the stellar stream "Indus". We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software also finds very long tidal tails associated with the 15 globular clusters NGC 288, NGC 1261, NGC 1851, NGC 2298, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, M 68, $\omega$Cen, NGC 5466, Palomar 5, M 5, NGC 6101, M 92, NGC 6397 and NGC 7089. These stellar streams will be used in subsequent contributions in this series to chart the properties of the Galactic acceleration field on $\sim$ 100 pc to $\sim$ 100 kpc scales., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication at ApJ. We present a suite of three-dimensional, high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations that follow the evolution of a massive (10^7 M_sun) pressure confined, star-forming neutral gas cloud moving through a hot intra-cluster medium (ICM). The main goal of the analysis is to get theoretical insight into the lifetimes and evolution of stellar systems like the recently discovered star-forming cloud SECCO~1 in the Virgo cluster of galaxies, but it may be of general interest for the study of the star-forming gas clumps that are observed in the tails of ram pressure stripped galaxies. Building upon a previous, simple simulation, we explored the effect of different relative velocity of the cloud and larger temperature of the ICM, as well as the effect of the cloud self-gravity. Moreover, we performed a simulation including star-formation and stellar feedback, allowing for a first time a direct comparison with the observed properties of the stars in the system. The survivability of the cold gas in the simulated clouds is granted on timescales of the order of 1 Gyr, with final cold gas fractions generally $>0.75$. In all cases, the simulated systems end up, after 1 Gyr of evolution, as symmetric clouds in pressure equilibrium with the external hot gas. We also confirm that gravity played a negligible role at the largest scales on the evolution of the clouds. In our simulation with star formation, star formation begins immediately, it peaks at the earliest times and decreases monotonically with time. Inhomogeneous supernova explosions are the cause of an asymmetric shape of the gas cloud, facilitating the development of instabilities and the decrease of the cold gas fraction., Comment: MNRAS, accepted. 20 pages, 11 Figures

We present the first full six-dimensional panoramic portrait of the Sagittarius stream, obtained by searching for wide stellar streams in the Gaia DR2 dataset with the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We use the kinematic behavior of the sample to devise a selection of Gaia RR Lyrae, providing excellent distance measurements along the stream. The proper motion data are complemented with radial velocities from public surveys. We find that the global morphological and kinematic properties of the Sagittarius stream are still reasonably well reproduced by the simple Law & Majewski (2010) model (LM10), although the model overestimates the leading arm and trailing arm distances by up to $\sim 15$%. The sample newly reveals the leading arm of the Sagittarius stream as it passes into very crowded regions of the Galactic disk towards the Galactic Anticenter direction. Fortuitously, this part of the stream is almost exactly at the diametrically opposite location from the Galactic Center to the progenitor, which should allow an assessment of the influence of dynamical friction and self-gravity in a way that is nearly independent of the underlying Galactic potential model., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We report the discovery of a 70-degree long stellar stream in the Milky Way halo, which criss-crosses the well known "GD-1" stream. We show that this new stellar structure ("Kshir") and GD-1 lie at similar distance, and are remarkably correlated in kinematics. We propose several explanations for the nature of this new structure and its possible association with GD-1. However, a scenario in which these two streams were accreted onto the Milky Way within the same dark matter sub-halo seems to provide a natural explanation for their phase-space entanglement, and other complexities of this coupled-system., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 Table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Omega Centauri is the most massive globular cluster of the Milky Way, and possesses many peculiar properties. In particular, the cluster contains distinct multiple stellar populations, with a large spread in metallicity and different kinematics as a function of light elements abundance, implying that it formed over an extended period of time. This has lead to the suggestion that $\omega$ Cen is the remnant core of an accreted dwarf galaxy. If this scenario is correct, $\omega$ Cen should be tidally limited, and one should expect to find tidal debris spread along its orbit. Here we use N-body simulations to show that the recently-discovered `Fimbulthul' structure, identified in the second data release (DR2) of the Gaia mission, is the long sought-for tidal stream of $\omega$ Cen, extending up to $28\deg$ from the cluster. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopy of 5 stars in the stream show that they are closely-grouped in velocity, and have metallicities consistent with having originated in that cluster. Guided by our N-body simulations, we devise a selection filter that we apply to Gaia data to also uncover the portion of the stream in the highly-contaminated and crowded field within $10\deg$ of $\omega$ Cen. Further modelling of the stream may help to constrain the dynamical history of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of this disrupting system and guide future searches for its remnant stars in the Milky Way., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy

We overview the current status of photometric analyses of images collected with Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) at 8-10m class telescopes that operated, or are operating, on sky. Particular attention will be payed to resolved stellar population studies. Stars in crowded stellar systems, such as globular clusters or in nearby galaxies, are ideal test particles to test AO performance. We will focus the discussion on photometric precision and accuracy reached nowadays. We briefly describe our project on stellar photometry and astrometry of Galactic globular clusters using images taken with GeMS at the Gemini South telescope. We also present the photometry performed with DAOPHOT suite of programs into the crowded regions of these globulars reaching very faint limiting magnitudes Ks ~21.5 mag on moderately large fields of view (~1.5 arcmin squared). We highlight the need for new algorithms to improve the modeling of the complex variation of the Point Spread Function across the field of view. Finally, we outline the role that large samples of stellar standards plays in providing a detailed description of the MCAO performance and in precise and accurate colour{magnitude diagrams., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, SPIE 2016

We use a combination of data acquired with the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope and the Large Binocular Camera (LBC-blue) mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope, to sample the main sequence stars of the globular cluster NGC~5466 in the mass range $0.3

Images from adaptive optics systems are generally affected by significant distortions of the point spread function (PSF) across the field of view, depending on the position of natural and artificial guide stars. Image reduction techniques circumventing or mitigating these effects are important tools to take full advantage of the scientific information encoded in AO images. The aim of this paper is to propose a method for the deblurring of the astronomical image, given a set of samples of the space-variant PSF. The method is based on a partitioning of the image domain into regions of isoplanatism and on applying suitable deconvolution methods with boundary effects correction to each region. The effectiveness of the boundary effects correction is proved. Moreover, the criterion for extending the disjoint sections to partially overlapping sections is validated. The method is applied to simulated images of a stellar system characterized by a spatially variable PSF. We obtain good photometric quality, and therefore good science quality, by performing aperture photometry on the deblurred images. We present different chemical evolution models for the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Bootes I. We either assume that the galaxy accretes its mass through smooth infall of gas of primordial chemical composition (classical models) or adopt mass accretion histories derived from the combination of merger trees with semi-analytical modelling (cosmologically-motivated models). Furthermore, we consider models with and without taking into account inhomogeneous mixing in the ISM within the galaxy. The theoretical predictions are then compared to each other and to the body of the available data. From this analysis, we confirm previous findings that Bootes I has formed stars with very low efficiency but, at variance with previous studies, we do not find a clear-cut indication that supernova explosions have sustained long-lasting galactic-scale outflows in this galaxy. Therefore, we suggest that external mechanisms such as ram pressure stripping and tidal stripping are needed to explain the absence of neutral gas in Bootes I today., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent analyses of the stellar stream of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy have claimed that the kinematics and three-dimensional location of the M-giant stars in this structure constrain the dark matter halo of our Galaxy to possess a triaxial shape that is extremely flattened, being essentially an oblate ellipsoid oriented perpendicular to the Galactic disk. Using a new stream-fitting algorithm, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo procedure, we investigate whether this claim remains valid if we allow the density profile of the Milky Way halo greater freedom. We find stream solutions that fit the leading and trailing arms of this structure even in a spherical halo, although this would need a rising Galactic rotation curve at large Galactocentric radius. However, the required rotation curve is not ruled out by current constraints. It appears therefore that for the Milky Way, halo triaxiality, despite its strong theoretical motivation, is not required to explain the Sagittarius stream. This degeneracy between triaxiality and the halo density profile suggests that in future endeavors to model this structure, it will be advantageous to relax the strict analytic density profiles that have been used to date., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJL

We use recently published measurements of the kinematics, surface brightness and stellar mass-to-light ratio of the globular cluster NGC 2419 to examine the possibility that this Galactic halo satellite is embedded in a low-mass dark matter halo. NGC 2419 is a promising target for such a study, since its extreme Galactocentric distance and large mass would have greatly facilitated the retention of dark matter. A Markov-Chain Monte Carlo approach is used to investigate composite dynamical models containing a stellar and a dark matter component. We find that it is unlikely that a significant amount of dark matter (less than approx. 6% of the luminous mass inside the tidal limit of the cluster) can be present if the stars follow an anisotropic Michie model and the dark matter a double power law model. However, we find that more general models, derived using a new technique we have developed to compute non-parametric solutions to the spherical Jeans equation, suggest the presence of a significant dark matter fraction (approximately twice the stellar mass). Thus the presence of a dark matter halo around NGC 2419 cannot be fully ruled out at present, yet any dark matter within the 10 arcmin visible extent of the cluster must be highly concentrated and cannot exceed 1.1x10^6 Solar masses (99% confidence), in stark contrast to expectations for a plausible progenitor halo of this structure., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Thanks to the outstanding capabilites of the HST, our current knowledge about the M31 globular clusters (GCs) is similar to our knowledge of the Milky Way GCs in the 1960s-1970s, which set the basis for studying the halo and galaxy formation using these objects as tracers, and established their importance in defining the cosmic distance scale. We intend to derive a new calibration of the M_V(HB)-[Fe/H] relation by exploiting the large photometric database of old GCs in M31 in the HST archive. We collected the BVI data for 48 old GCs in M31 and analysed them by applying the same methods and procedures to all objects. We obtained a set of homogeneous colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) that were best-fitted with the fiducial CMD ridge lines of selected Milky Way template GCs. Reddening, metallicity, Horizontal Branch (HB) luminosity and distance were determined self-consistently for each cluster. There are three main results of this study: i) the relation M_V(HB)=(0.25+/-0.02)[Fe/H]+(0.89+/-0.03), which is obtained from the above parameters and is calibrated on the distances of the template Galactic GCs; ii) the distance modulus to M31 of (m-M)_0=24.42+/-0.06 mag, obtained by normalising this relation at the reference value of [Fe/H]=-1.5 to a similar relation using V_0(HB). This is the first determination of the distance to M31 based on the characteristics of its GC system which is calibrated on Galactic GCs; iii) the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is estimated to be 18.54+/-0.07 mag as a consequence of the previous results. VV124 (UGC 4879) is an isolated, dwarf irregular/dwarf spheroidal (dIrr/dSph) transition-type galaxy at a distance of 1.36 Mpc. Previous low-resolution spectroscopy yielded inconsistent radial velocities for different components of the galaxy, and photometry hinted at the presence of a stellar disk. In order to quantify the stellar dynamics, we observed individual red giants in VV124 with the Keck/DEIMOS spectrograph. We validated members based on their positions in the color-magnitude diagram, radial velocities, and spectral features. Our sample contains 67 members. The average radial velocity is = -29.1 +/- 1.3 km/s, in agreement with the previous radio measurements of HI gas. The velocity distribution is Gaussian, indicating that VV124 is supported primarily by velocity dispersion inside a radius of 1.5 kpc. Outside that radius, our measurements provide only an upper limit of 8.6 km/s on any rotation in the photometric disk-like feature. The velocity dispersion is sigma_v = 9.4 +/- 1.0 km/s, from which we inferred a mass of M_1/2 = (2.1 +/- 0.2) x 10^7 M_sun and a mass-to-light ratio of (M/L_V)_1/2 = 5.2 +/- 1.1 M_sun/L_sun, both measured within the half-light radius. Thus, VV124 contains dark matter. We also measured the metallicity distribution from neutral iron lines. The average metallicity, <[Fe/H]> = -1.58 +/- 0.06, is consistent with the mass-metallicity relation defined by dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dynamics and metallicity distribution of VV124 appear similar to dSphs of similar stellar mass., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. Accepted to ApJ. Photometry in B, V (down to V ~ 26 mag) is presented for two 23' x 23' fields of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) that were observed with the blue channel camera of the Large Binocular Telescope during the Science Demonstration Time. Each field covers an area of about 5.1kpc x 5.1kpc at the distance of M31 ((m-M)o ~ 24.4 mag), sampling, respectively, a northeast region close to the M31 giant stream (field S2), and an eastern portion of the halo in the direction of the galaxy minor axis (field H1). The stream field spans a region that includes Andromeda's disk and the giant stream, and this is reflected in the complexity of the color magnitude diagram of the field. One corner of the halo field also includes a portion of the giant stream. Even though these demonstration time data were obtained under non-optimal observing conditions the B photometry, acquired in time-series mode, allowed us to identify 274 variable stars (among which 96 are bona fide and 31 are candidate RR Lyrae stars, 71 are Cepheids, and 16 are binary systems) by applying the image subtraction technique to selected portions of the observed fields. Differential flux light curves were obtained for the vast majority of these variables. Our sample includes mainly pulsating stars which populate the instability strip from the Classical Cepheids down to the RR Lyrae stars, thus tracing the different stellar generations in these regions of M31 down to the horizontal branch of the oldest (t ~ 10 Gyr) component., Comment: 59 pages, 26 figures, 12 tables, ApJ in press

We present an analysis of the globular cluster NGC 2419, using a polytropic model in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) to reproduce recently published high quality data of the structure and kinematics of the system. We show that a specific MOND polytropic model of NGC 2419 suggested by a previous study can be completely ruled out by the data. Furthermore, the highest likelihood fit polytrope in MOND is a substantially worse model (by a factor of approximately 5000) than a Newtonian Michie model studied in an earlier contribution by Ibata et al. (2011). We conclude that the structure and dynamics of NGC 2419 favor Newtonian dynamics and do indeed challenge the MOND theory., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We used deep wide-field observations obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study the blue straggler star (BSS) population in the innermost five arcminutes of the remote Galactic globular cluster Palomar 14. The BSS radial distribution is found to be consistent with that of the normal cluster stars, showing no evidence of central segregation. Palomar 14 is the third system in the Galaxy (in addition to OmegaCentauri and NGC 2419) showing a population of BSS not centrally segregated. This is the most direct evidence that in Palomar 14 two-body relaxation has not fully established energy equipartition yet, even in the central regions (in agreement with the estimated half-mass relaxation time, which is significantly larger than the cluster age). These observational facts have important implications for the interpretation of the shape of the mass function and the existence of the tidal tails recently discovered in this cluster., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We use abundances of Ca, O, Na, Al from high resolution UVES spectra of 200 red giants in 17 globular clusters (GCs) to investigate the correlation found by Lee et al. (2009) between chemical enrichment from SN II and star-to-star variations in light elements in GC stars. We find that (i) the [Ca/H] variations between first and second generation stars are tiny in most GCs (~0.02-0.03 dex, comparable with typical observational errors). In addition, (ii) using a large sample of red giants in M 4 with abundances from UVES spectra from Marino et al. (2008), we find that Ca and Fe abundances in the two populations of Na-poor and Na-rich stars are identical. These facts suggest that the separation seen in color-magnitude diagrams using the U band or hk index (as observed in NGC 1851 by Han et al. 2009) are not due to Ca variations. Small differences in [Ca/H] as associated to hk variations might be due to a small systematic effect in abundance analysis, because most O-poor/Na-rich (He-rich) stars have slightly larger [Fe/H] (by 0.027 dex on average, due to decreased H in the ratio) than first generation stars and are then located at redder positions in the V,hk plane. While a few GCs (M 54, omega Cen, M 22, maybe even NGC 1851) do actually show various degree of metallicity spread, our findings eliminate the need of a close link between the enrichment by core-collapse SNe with the mechanism responsible for the Na-O anticorrelation., Comment: Uses emulateapj, 3 figures, 2 tables (1 only available in electronic form), accepted for publication on ApJ Letters

With the aim of increasing the sample of M31 clusters for which a colour magnitude diagram is available, we searched the HST archive for ACS images containing objects included in the Revised Bologna Catalogue of M31 globular clusters. Sixty-three such objects were found. We used the ACS images to confirm or revise their classification and we obtained useful CMDs for 11 old globular clusters and 6 luminous young clusters. We obtained simultaneous estimates of the distance, reddening, and metallicity of old clusters by comparing their observed field-decontaminated CMDs with a grid of template clusters of the Milky Way. We estimated the age of the young clusters by fitting with theoretical isochrones. For the old clusters, we found metallicities in the range -0.4<=[Fe/H]<=-1.9, that generally agree with existing spectroscopic extimates. At least four of them display a clear blue HB, indicating ages >10 Gyr. All six candidate young clusters are found to have ages <1Gyr. With the present work the total number of M31 GCs with reliable optical CMD increases from 35 to 44 for the old clusters, and from 7 to 11 for the young ones. The old clusters show similar characteristics to those of the MW. We discuss the case of the cluster B407, with a metallicity [Fe/H] ~-0.6 and located at a large projected distance from the centre of M31 and from the galaxy major axis. Metal-rich globulars at large galactocentric distances are rare both in M31 and in the MW. B407, in addition, has a velocity in stark contrast with the rotation pattern shared by the bulk of M31 clusters of similar metallicity. This, along with other empirical evidence, supports the hypothesis that the cluster is physically associated with a substructure in the M31 halo that has been interpreted as the relic of a merging event., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. This paper concludes a systematic search for evidence of the Monoceros Ring and Canis Major dwarf galaxy around the Galactic Plane. Presented here are the results for the Galactic longitude range of l = (280 - 025)deg. Testing the claim that the Monoceros Ring encircles the entire Galaxy, this survey attempts to document the position of the Monoceros Ring with increasing Galactic longitude. Additionally, with the discovery of the purported Canis Major dwarf galaxy, searching for more evidence of its interaction is imperative to tracing its path through the Galaxy and understanding its role in the evolution of the Milky Way. Two new detections of the Monoceros Ring have been found at (l, b) = (280,+15)deg and (300,+10)deg. Interestingly, in general there seem to be more detections above the Plane than below it; in this survey around 2/3 of the firm Monoceros Ring detections are in the North. This coincides with the Northern detections appearing to be qualitatively denser and broader than their Southern counterparts. The maximum of the Galactic Warp in the South is also probed in this survey. It is found that these fields do not resemble those in the Canis Major region suggesting that the Warp does not change the shape of the CMD as is witnessed around Canis Major. The origins and morphology of the Monoceros Ring is still elusive primarily due to its enormous extent on the sky. Continued probing of the Galactic Outer Disc is needed before a consensus can be reached on its nature., Comment: 11 Pages with quite a few figures. It is well known that the bright and remote Galactic globular cluster NGC2419 has a very peculiar structure. In particular its half-light radius is significantly larger than that of ordinary globular clusters of similar luminosity, being as large as that of the brightest nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies. In this context it is particularly worth to check the reliability of the existing surface brightness profiles for this cluster and of the available estimates of its structural parameters. Combining different datasets I derive the surface brightness profile going from the cluster center out to ~ 480 arcsec, i.e. ~25 core radii. (Abridged). The newly obtained surface brightness profile is in excellent agreement with that provided by Trager, King & Djorgovski for r>= 4 arcsec; it is best fitted by a King model having r_c=0.32 arcmin, mu_V(0)=19.55 and C=1.35. Also new independent estimates of the total integrated V magnitude (V_t=10.47 +/- 0.07) and of the half-light radius (r_h=0.96 arcmin +/- 0.2 arcmin) have been obtained. (Abridged). The structure of NGC2419 is now reliably constrained by (at least) two fully independent observational profiles that are in good agreement one with the other. We present the results of an AAT wide-field camera survey of the stars in the Monoceros Ring and purported Canis Major overdensity in the Galactic longitudes of {\it l} = (193 - 276)$^\circ$. Current numerical simulations suggest that both of these structures are the result of a single on-going accretion event, although an alternative solution is that the warped and flared disc of the Galaxy can explain the origin of both of these structures. Our results show that, with regards the Monoceros Ring, the warped and flared disc is unable to reproduce the locations and strengths of the detections observed around the Galaxy. This supports a non-Galactic origin for this structure. We report 8 new detections and 2 tentative detections of the Monoceros Ring in this survey. The exact nature of the Canis Major overdensity is still unresolved although this survey provides evidence that invoking the Galactic warp is not a sufficient solution when compared with observation. Several fields in this survey are highly inconsistent with the current Galactic disc models that include a warp and flare, to such an extent that explaining their origins with these structures is problematic. We have used a set of archived Hubble Space Telescope/ACS images to probe the evolved populations of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We find an excess of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the cluster core. We interpret this feature as the signature of an extra-population likely made by the progeny of massive stars originated by the evolution of binary systems. Indeed the comparison with theoretical tracks suggests that the AGB population of 47 Tuc can be significantly contaminated by more massive stars currently experiencing the first ascending Red Giant Branch., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, in press on ApJ Letters

An AAT/2dF Spectrograph Survey of low Galactic latitudes targeting the putative Canis Major dwarf galaxy, and the (possibly) associated tidal debris of stars known as the Monoceros Ring, covering Galactic coordinates 231.5$^{\circ}< ${\it l} $<$ 247.5$^{\circ}$ and -11.8$^{\circ}<${\it b}$<-3.8^{\circ}$, has revealed the presence of the Monoceros Ring in the background of the Canis Major dwarf galaxy. This detection resides at a galactocentric distance of $\sim18.9\pm$0.3\kpc (13.5$\pm$0.3\kpc heliocentric), exhibiting a velocity of $\sim132.8\pm$1.3 $\kms$ with a dispersion of $\sim22.7\pm1.7\kms$; both of these comparable with previous measurements of the Monoceros Ring in nearby fields. Recent observational evidence suggests that the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy represents the only major ongoing accretion event in the Galactic halo, accounting for the majority of stellar debris identified there. This paper summarizes the recent discovery of another potential Milky Way accretion event, the Canis Major dwarf galaxy. This dwarf satellite galaxy is found to lie just below the Galactic plane and appears to be on an equatorial orbit. We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and wide field ground-based observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc spanning the entire radial extent of the cluster. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly decreases at intermediate radii, and finally rises again at larger radii. The observed distribution closely resembles that discovered in M3 by Ferraro et al (1993,1997). To date, complete BSS surveys covering the full radial extent (HST in the center and wide field CCD ground based observations of the exterior) have been performed for only these two clusters. Both show a bimodal radial distribution, despite their different dynamical properties. BSS surveys covering the full spatial extent of more globular clusters are clearly required to determine how common bimodality is and what its consequence is for theories of BSS formation and cluster dynamics., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for pubblication in ApJ

Tidal radii of remote globular clusters (R_{GC}>= 35 kpc) are used to provide constraints of the mass profile of the Milky Way galaxy that are independent of kinematic data. The available data are consistent with the profile of an isothermal sphere with circular velocity V_c = 220 +/- 40 km/s in the radial range 35 kpc < R_{GC} < 100 kpc, in good agreement with all recent estimates. The more robust constraint at large distances from the galactic center is provided by NGC 2419, yelding an enclosed mass of ~ 1.3 (+2.9/-1.0) * 10**12 M_{sun} at R_{GC}= 90 kpc., Comment: LaTex. 6 pages, 2 .ps figures.
