Abstract

Micropalaeontological and chemostratigraphic results from the mid-Cretaceous 'upper siliceous zone' of the Ionian zone, studied in two localities of NW Greece (Paliambela and Panaya), provide new insights into the palaeoceanographic evolution of Tethys and better correlation with well-studied Italian successions. [[delta].sup.13]C carbonate and organic-carbon isotope stratigraphy allows an improved correlation of the early Aptian Fourcade Level with Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a. Calcareous nannofossils point to intervals of reduced sedimentation within the late Aptian part of the limestones overlying the Fourcade Level. Combined calcareous nannofossil, radiolarian and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy suggests that the overlying radiolarites (named herein the 'Dercourt Member') are essentially mid-Albian in age. Radiolarites of this age and thickness have not been identified in the well-explored Italian sections of in southern Albania. It is therefore likely that the Dercourt radiolarites reflect a high-productivity event localized in the Greek area of the Ionian zone, possibly caused by a bathymetrically induced upwelling of intermediate to deep waters that entered the Ionian trough following the opening of new oceanic gateways in the Eastern Mediterranean Tethys. Abstract

Forecasting the height of new snow (HN) is crucial for avalanche hazard forecasting, road viability, ski resort management and tourism attractiveness. Météo-France operates the PEARP-S2M probabilistic forecasting system, including 35 members of the PEARP Numerical Weather Prediction system, where the SAFRAN downscaling tool refines the elevation resolution and the Crocus snowpack model represents the main physical processes in the snowpack. It provides better HN forecasts than direct NWP diagnostics but exhibits significant biases and underdispersion. We applied a statistical post-processing to these ensemble forecasts, based on non-homogeneous regression with a censored shifted Gamma distribution. Observations come from manual measurements of 24 h HN in the French Alps and Pyrenees. The calibration is tested at the station scale and the massif scale (i.e. aggregating different stations over areas of 1000 km²). Compared to the raw forecasts, similar improvements are obtained for both spatial scales. Therefore, the post-processing can be applied at any point of the massifs. Two training datasets are tested: (1) a 22-year homogeneous reforecast for which the NWP model resolution and physical options are identical to the operational system but without the same initial perturbations; (2) 3-year real-time forecasts with a heterogeneous model configuration but the same perturbation methods. The impact of the training dataset depends on lead time and on the evaluation criteria. The long-term reforecast improves the reliability of severe snowfall but leads to overdispersion due to the discrepancy in real-time perturbations. Thus, the development of reliable automatic forecasting products of HN needs long reforecasts as homogeneous as possible with the operational systems.

20. Hormetic potential of methylglyoxal, a side-product of glycolysis, in switching tumours from growth to death

Abstract

Metabolic reprogramming toward aerobic glycolysis unavoidably favours methylglyoxal (MG) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation in cancer cells. MG was initially considered a highly cytotoxic molecule with potential anti-cancer value. However, we have recently demonstrated that MG enhanced tumour growth and metastasis. In an attempt to understand this dual role, we explored MG-mediated dicarbonyl stress status in four breast and glioblastoma cancer cell lines in relation with their glycolytic phenotype and MG detoxifying capacity. In glycolytic cancer cells cultured in high glucose, we observed a significant increase of the conversion of MG to D-lactate through the glyoxalase system. Moreover, upon exogenous MG challenge, glycolytic cells showed elevated amounts of intracellular MG and induced de novo GLO1 detoxifying enzyme and Nrf2 expression. Thus, supporting the adaptive nature of glycolytic cancer cells to MG dicarbonyl stress when compared to non-glycolytic ones. Finally and consistent with the pro-tumoural role of MG, we showed that low doses of MG induced AGEs formation and tumour growth in vivo, both of which can be reversed using a MG scavenger. Our study represents the first demonstration of a hormetic effect of MG defined by a low-dose stimulation and a high-dose inhibition of tumour growth.

Abstract

International audience; The estimate of future climate change and of its impact on the environment requires to increase our knowledge of the complex interactions between the atmosphere, the ocean, sea-ice, land surfaces and glaciers. These components are coupled through the cycles of energy and water, but also through biogeochemical cycles such as the carbon or the ozone cycles. One of the goals of the IPSL modeling community is to study how these different couplings can modulate climate and climate variability, and to determine how feedbacks in the Earth system control the response of climate to a perturbation such as the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. For this purpose, the Earth system model of the IPSL is developed as a modular suite of model components of the Earth system that can be use either as stand alone models or coupled to each other. This note presents the new features and results of the last version of the global IPSL coupled model that will be used to run the set of simulations planned for the next IPCC assessment. In particular, chapter 2 presents the model components of the coupled system, highlighting important features for the coupling or the quality of model simulations. Chapter 3 synthesise all the coupling procedures and the coupling environment, and chapter 4 discussed the major characteristics of the model climatology.

Abstract

Cretaceous sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 159 on the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge (CIGMR), eastern equatorial Atlantic, are characterized by distinct stratigraphic changes in sedimentary facies associated with changes in the composition of the clayey and organic fractions, as well as of the calcareous nannofossil, radiolarian, foraminiferal, and palynomorph assemblages. In the absence of reliable magnetostratigraphic information, an integrated biostratigraphy provides the only means used to calibrate the geologic history of the Leg 159 area. The existence of marine depositional environments as early as the late Aptian to early Albian close to the Leg 159 drill sites puts constraints on the timing of the opening of the equatorial Atlantic gateway. Marine sedimentation on the ridge suggests that the West African and South American cratons were largely detached at this segment of the margin by the middle to late Albian. During the Cenomanian to Coniacian the ridge appears to have remained in an elevated position with concurrent low deposition or condensation (Site 959), high carbonate debris accumulation (Site 960), and even erosion (Site 962). Total organic Carbon measurements and microfaunal data lead us to suggest that, following the early opening of the seaway during the Albian, circulation remained restricted in the fragmented sub-basins of the CIGMR. It probably was not until the Santonian that a deep-water connection and circulation system became established between the Central and the South Atlantic. The sedimentary and faunal record at Site 959 show that a rapid subsidence occurred during the Santonian, with sub-calcite compensation depth conditions maintained until and beyond the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary.

Abstract

After some forty years in the academic world and before abandoning a position as an employee of the State educational system to enter the new world of "pensioners", it seemed worthwhile to the first author (J.-P.B.) of this brief discussion to compile a short document that presents a synopsis of the knowledge acquired, taught and put to use for more than four decades. This fascicle reviews only the foraminifers, which, along with calcareous nannofossils, are the fundamental tools of modern biostratigraphy, used for worldwide oceanographic studies and for the correlation of oil wells. It deals essentially with the small foraminifers, that is those of modest size without a complex internal architecture. These include the planktonic foraminifers of which the rapid evolution and great dispersion permit the establishment of reliable biochronologic scales of reference.This short course is intended for students preparing for the CAPES (Certificat d'aptitude au professorat de l'enseignement du second degré = Certificate of Aptitude for a Professorship of Instruction in the Second Grade), for students working toward the Aggregation in Natural Sciences in pursuit of a scientific career in the universities or in the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique = National Centre for Scientific Research), and for students who hope to work in the oil industry where a specialization in the field of micropaleontology is considered useful and is still valued. It will also interest amateur naturalists and that portion of the general public attracted by the beauties of the microscopic world, now living, or extinct and represented only by fossils.

Abstract

Faisant suite aux recherches sur le Bédoulien et le Gargasien du secteur de Cassis-La Bédoule (B. du Rh., SE France), l'étude de quatre coupes en relais dans l'aire stratotypique de l'Aptien, situées dans le secteur du Hameau de la Tuilière (commune de Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, Vaucluse, SE France) a permis l'analyse détaillée des associations de foraminifères benthiques (30 taxons) et planctoniques (15 taxons) du Bédoulien supérieur et du Gargasien inférieur. Descriptions, figurations et répartition stratigraphique sont fournies pour les formes les plus significatives, avec individualisation de plusieurs marqueurs, benthiques et surtout planctoniques. L'étude de ces derniers dans le cadre privilégié de coupes dilatées et dépourvues de hiatus a permis de conforter la zonation définie antérieurement dans le stratotype de l'Aptien inférieur de Cassis-La Bédoule (succession des zones à cabri, luterbacheri, ferreolensis, barri, algerianus) et même de l'affiner, par la mise en évidence d'un horizon à Globigerinelloides ferreolensis heptacameratus nov. subsp., chevauchant la limite entre les zones à luterbacheri et à ferreolensis. Nos résultats montrent également la quasi-coïncidence temporelle 1) du toit de la zones d'ammonites à Furcata, 2) du changement lithologique dit du "changement de couleur" et 3) d'un triple datum micropaléontologique (FAD de Praehedbergella luterbacheri, LAD de Protocythere bedoulensis et Lenticulina cf. nodosa) dont l'importance avait déjà été signalée dans le stratotype de Cassis-La Bédoule. Ces nouvelles données peuvent constituer des éléments pour la définition de la limite Bédoulien-Gargasien. Durant le Gargasien inférieur (au sein de la Zone à luterbacheri), un épisode probablement d'origine volcanique, que nous sommes tentés d'assimiler au Niveau Van Gogh (initialement détecté dans le domaine vocontien), est marqué par une forte crise de diversité affectant les foraminifères épibenthiques, planctoniques, ainsi que les ostracodes. Sur le plan paléoécologique et paléobiogéographique, la comparaison des associations de foraminifères benthiques et planctoniques du secteur de La Tuilière avec celles des régions voisines fait apparaître des spécificités liées à la paléo-profondeur et des affinités paraissant plus marquées avec les microfaunes de certaines régions boréales, comme l'Allemagne du Nord, qu'avec le domaine téthysien. [Research on the Bedoulian and Gargasian of the Cassis-La Bédoule (Bouches du Rhône, SE France) area is extended, by a study of four overlapping sections in the stratotypic area of the Aptian stage in the hamlet of La Tuilière (commune of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, Vaucluse, SE France). This new information permitted a detailed analysis of upper Bedoulian and lower Gargasian benthic (30 taxa) and planktonic (15 taxa) foraminiferal assemblages. Here we describe, illustrate and give the ranges and distribution of the most significant forms, and call attention to several benthic and planktonic species that may serve as extra-regional markers.The study of the planktonics in these expanded and continuous sections made it possible to strengthen the zonation which had been established in the Lower Aptian stratotype of Cassis-La Bédoule, i.e. a succession of five zones (cabri, luterbacheri, ferreolensis, barri, algerianus); this zonal scheme is improved by the addition of a horizon with Globigerinelloides ferreolensis heptacameratus nov. subsp., which straddles the boundary between the luterbacheri and ferreolensis zones. We also show the temporal quasi-coincidence of: 1) the top of the Furcata ammonite Zone, 2) the lithological change named "change of color" and 3) a triple micropaleontological datum (FAD of Praehedbergella luterbacheri, LAD of Protocythere bedoulensis and Lenticulina cf. nodosa) of which the importance in the stratotype of Cassis-La Bédoule had already been pointed out. All these data may be valuable in the definition of the Bedoulian-Gargasian boundary.Within the luterbacheri Zone of the early Gargasian, an episode probably of volcanic origin that we interpret as the equivalent of the Van Gogh Level (initially detected in the Vocontian domain), is marked by a strong crisis in the diversity of epibenthic and planktonic foraminifers, as well as in that of the ostracodes.From a paleoecological and paleobiogeographical point of view, a comparison of the benthic and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages of La Tuilière with those of neighbouring areas reveals specific features related to paleodepth and shows affinities which appear to be closer with the microfaunas of certain boreal areas (e.g. northern Germany) than with the Tethysian realm.]

Abstract

This dam is located in Java, close to Djakarta, on the Tjitarum river. The dam consists of a stone dyke and an internal watertight screen, of suitably chosen and compacted soil. The width of the dyke at the base is 600 m, and the dam rises 100 m above its foundations. The reservoir that will be formed will hold 3,000 X 106 m3 of water, at 107 m height. A special feature of this project is that the power station and spillway are related to a concrete cylindrical body, of 90 m diameter and 110 m height. At the top of this is the surface spillway, and on the outside are the water intakes for each of the 6 generator groups located along the inner bottom rim of the concrete cylinder., Se halla situada en la isla de Java, próxima a Djakarta y sobre el río Tjitarum. La presa de cierre está constituida por un dique de piedra y una pantal la interior, de impermeabilización, formada con tierras convenientemente seleccionadas y compactadas. El espesor del dique en su base es de 600 m, y tiene una altura respecto a cimientos de 100 m. Este dique crea un embalse de 3.000 x 166 m3 con un nivel de agua a la cota 107 metros. La particularidad de esta obra consiste en disponer la central y el aliviadero en un cuerpo cilíndrico de hormigón, de 90 m de diámetro exterior y 110 m de altura, en cuya parte superior están el aliviadero de superficie, y en el exterior se hallan las tomas de agua para cada uno de los 6 grupos instalados y la central en un anillo circular inferior.

Abstract

International audience; While numerous works have shown that the road network impacts forest biodiversity, there is a lack of hindsight regarding how forest accessibility affects forest structure due to the possibility of human intervention through harvesting. In a context of growing demand for woody resources, it is important to quantify the link between accessibility and forest structure in order to anticipate a potential imbalance between accessible and remote areas regarding silviculture intensity. With the development of airborne laser scanning (ALS) assisted inventories, it is now possible to map the spatial variability of forest stand parameters at a resolution of about 20 m. Besides, Geographical Information Software (GIS) based models are now available to quantify forest accessibility based on the forest network and digital terrain models. The objective of this study is to quantify the link between forest parameters and accessibility, measured as the harvesting distance, while taking into account external environmental and human factors. The study area is located in the Vercors mountain (French Alps), where ALS data were acquired over 50 km2. Dominant species are Norway spruce (Picea abies), silver fir (Abies alba) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica). The area is mainly harvested by skidder, and presents a dense network of skid trails and forests roads. ALS prediction models were calibrated thanks to 96 field plots and used to map basal area, dominant height and quadratic diameter at 25 m resolution. Slope and altitude were computed from the ALS data. Meteorological and geological data were also gathered. Forest accessibility was mapped thanks to a GIS-based model (Sylvaccess) which outputs for each forest pixel the distance traveled by skidders to the nearest forest road. Preliminary data analysis showed that outside accessibility, the main factors affecting forest variables in this area are topographical factors, geology and forest ownership. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were then performed with forest parameters as the dependent variable and slope, altitude, distance as the covariates and geology as categorical independent variable. The analysis was conducted separately for private and public forests as the distribution of forest parameters are significantly different for these two categories.
