2. Evaluation of the mesoscale–microscale (WRF–WAsP) coupling methodology for wind resource parameters in Fiji.

Abstract

This study presents an analysis of the proposed Weather Research and Forecasting–Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WRF–WAsP) models coupling methodology and evaluates the improvement in the accuracy of the wind predictions for the small island developing state (SIDS) of Fiji in the tropical Southwest Pacific region. The results revealed that the proposed WRF–WAsP coupling methodology can be used as a wind resource assessment methodology provided very-high resolution dynamically downscaled wind resource data is available in the order of 10 years for utility-scale wind power applications. The analysis also revealed that the 1 km × 1 km WRF model data from the finest (high-resolution) domain (d03) is best for coupling WRF–WAsP for wind resource parameters evaluation. The coupling methodology of WRF–WAsP improved the accuracy of the wind prediction by 0.2–6% for the wind resource parameters evaluated for Fiji. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Surface fluxes and tropical intraseasonal variability: a reassessment

Abstract

The authors argue for the hypothesis that interactive feedbacks involving surface enthalpy fluxes are important to the dynamics of tropical intraseasonal variability. These include cloud-radiative feedbacks as well as surface turbulent flux feedbacks; the former effectively act to transport enthalpy from the ocean to the atmosphere, as do the latter. Evidence in favor of this hypothesis includes the observed spatial distribution of intraseasonal variance in precipitation and outgoing longwave radiation, the observed relationship between intraseasonal latent heat flux and precipitation anomalies in regions where intraseasonal variability is strong, and sensitivity experiments performed with a small number of general circulation and idealized models. The authors argue that it would be useful to assess the importance of surface fluxes to intraseasonal variability in a larger number of comprehensive numerical models. Such an assessment could provide insight into the relevance of interactive surface fluxes to real intraseasonal variability, perhaps making it possible to rule out either theoretical explanations in which surface fluxes are crucial, or those in which they are not., Comment: 36 pages of real text + figures, 50 pages with references and title page, 9 figures

Abstract

A single-column model run under the weak temperature gradient approximation, a parameterization of large-scale dynamics appropriate for the tropical atmosphere, is shown to have multiple stable equilibria. Under conditions permitting persistent deep convection, the model has a statistically steady state in which such convection occurs, as well as an extremely dry state in which convection does not occur. Abstract

Tropical atmospheric climatology and variability is characterized by a strong interaction between diabatic processes and circulations. The main diabatic processes involved in this interaction are associated with clouds and its one spectacular result is how convective clouds often form clusters or ensembles on a wide range of spatial scales. This spatial organization of clouds is responsible for the development of an alternation of dry, subsiding regions and moist, convective, ascending regions in the tropics.This manuscript reviews current and past research to understand and conceptualize the interaction between atmospheric diabatic processes and dynamics. In particular, it presents attempts to model this interaction in the simplest ways possible. It also presents a number of tropical atmospheric phenomena due to a spontaneous spatial organization of clouds resulting from this interaction: self-aggregation of convective clouds in models and the intraseasonal modes of variability. The known and debated mechanisms giving rise to these phenomenaare detailed.In some features of the tropical climate, additional external influences or interactions, involving the surface or the extratropical atmosphere, are also at play in the spatial organization of convective clouds. This manuscript presents a few of these features, such as the Hadley circulation and tropical island climates.

31. The effect of imposed drying on parameterized deep convection

Abstract

This paper examines the influence of imposed drying, intended to represent horizontal advection of dry air, on parameterized deep convection interacting with large-scale dynamics in a single-column model framework. Two single-column models, one based on the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System general circulation model version 5 (GEOS5) and the other developed by Bony and Emanuel, are run in weak temperature gradient mode. Drying is imposed by relaxation of the specific humidity field toward zero within a specified vertical layer. The strength of the drying is controlled by specifying either the relaxation time scale or the vertically integrated drying tendency; results are insensitive to which specification is used. The two models reach very different solutions for the same boundary conditions and model configuration. Even when adjustments to the boundary conditions and model parameters are made to render the precipitation rates similar, large differences in the profiles of relative humidity and large-scale vertical velocity persist. In both models, however, drying in the middle troposphere is more effective, per kg [m.sup.-2] [s.sup.-1] (or W [m.sup.-2]) of imposed drying, in suppressing precipitation than is drying in the lower troposphere. Even when compared at equal relaxation time (corresponding to weaker net drying in the middle than lower troposphere), middle-tropospheric drying is comparably effective to lower-tropospheric drying. Upper-tropospheric drying has a relatively small effect on precipitation, although large drying in the upper troposphere cannot be imposed as a steady state because of the lack of moisture there. Consistent with the other model differences, the gross moist stabilities of the two models are quite different and vary somewhat differently as a function of imposed drying, but in both models the gross moist stability increases as the drying is increased when it is less than around 30 W [m.sup.-2] and located in the middle troposphere. For lower-tropospheric drying, the gross moist stability either decreases with increased drying or increases more slowly than for middle-tropospheric drying.

32. Poleward-propagating intraseasonal monsoon disturbances in an intermediate-complexity axisymmetric model

Abstract

A model of intermediate complexity based on quasi-equilibrium theory--a version of the quasi-equilibrium tropical circulation model with a prognostic atmospheric boundary layer, as well as two free-tropospheric modes in momentum, and one each in moisture and temperature--is used in a zonally symmetric aquaplanet configuration to simulate aspects of the South Asian monsoon and its variability. Key qualitative features of both the mean state and the 30-60-day mode of the intraseasonal variability are simulated satisfactorily. The model has two limit cycles of similar period and structure that can account for this mode. Both feature northward propagation of the tropical convergence zone from 5[degrees]S to 25[degrees]N with a period of about 50 days. The dynamics of the oscillations are investigated. The system reaches a Hopf bifurcation when the asymmetry of the sea surface temperature (SST) forcing is increased. Beyond the bifurcation, the mean flow is linearly unstable, and the one linearly unstable mode is similar in structure and period to the nonlinear mode. The wind-induced surface heat fluxes are necessary to obtain the instability of the mean monsoon flow, as are the 2 degrees of freedom in the vertical structure of both humidity and wind.

35. On bulk models of shallow cumulus convection

Abstract

Two-layer bulk models of the cloudy boundary laver are investigated, focusing on the consistency issues between common assumptions on the turbulent mixing and the thermodynamic profiles. Simplifications of the vertical structure of the conserved variables are shown to lead to inconsistent steady states. First, linear profiles in the cloud layer are incompatible with the common parameterizations of the turbulent mixing. Second, this approximation is inconsistent with simple models of an infinitely thin inversion layer. Simple mass-flux parameterizations of the turbulence are shown to produce reasonable profiles inside the cloud layer without solving the problem of the inversion. The cloud--environment difference and the vertical gradient of the conserved variables appear as interesting test variables for such models, as well as their ability to match the free-tropospheric boundary conditions. The latter certainly requires a unified approach for the cloud and inversion layers.

Abstract

International audience; Vertical and horizontal distributions of diabatic heating in the West African monsoon (WAM) region as simulated by four model families are analyzed in order to assess the physical processes that affect the WAM circulation. For each model family, atmosphere-only runs of their CMIP5 configurations are compared with more recent configurations which are on the development path toward CMIP6. The various configurations of these models exhibit significant differences in their heating/moistening profiles, related to the different representation of physical processes such as boundary layer mixing, convection, large-scale condensation and radiative heating/cooling. There are also significant differences in the models' simulation of WAM rainfall patterns and circulations. The weaker the radiative cooling in the Saharan region, the larger the ascent in the rainband and the more intense the monsoon flow, while the latitude of the rainband is related to heating in the Gulf of Guinea region and on the northern side of the Saharan heat low. Overall, this work illustrates the difficulty experienced by current climate models in representing the characteristics of monsoon systems, but also that we can still use them to understand the interactions between local subgrid physical processes and the WAM circulation. Moreover, our conclusions regarding the relationship between errors in the large-scale circulation of the WAM and the structure of the heating by small-scale processes will motivate future studies and model development.

Abstract

International audience Diabatic heating plays a crucial role in the formation and maintenance of the West African Monsoon. A dynamical core configuration of a General Circulation Model (GCM) is used to test the influence of diabatic heating from different sources and regions on the strength and northward penetration of the monsoon circulation. The dynamical core is able to capture the main features of the monsoon flow, and when forced with heating tendencies from various different GCMs it recreates many of the differences seen between the full GCM monsoon circulations. Differences in atmospheric shortwave absorption over the Sahara and Sahel regions are a key driver of variation in the models' monsoon circulations, and this is likely to be linked to how aerosols, clouds and surface albedo are represented across the models. The magnitude of shortwave absorption also appears to affect the strength and position of the African easterly jet (AEJ), but not that of the tropical easterly jet (TEJ). The dynamical core is also used here to understand circulation changes that occur during the ongoing model development process that occurs at each modeling centre, providing the potential to trace these changes to specific alterations in model physics.

Abstract

This study compares the simulation of sub-seasonal tropical variability by a set of six state-of-the-art AGCMs in two experiments in aqua-planet configuration: a zonally-symmetric experiment, and an experiment with a warm pool centered on the equator.\ud \ud In all six models, the presence of the warm pool generates zonal asymmetries in the simulated mean states in the form of a “Gill-type” response, made more complex by feedbacks between moisture, convective heating and circulation. Noticeable differences appear from one model to another. Only half the models simulate mean low-level equatorial westerlies over the warm pool area.\ud \ud The presence of the warm pool can also favor the development of large-scale variability consistent with observed Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) characteristics, but this happens only in half the models. Our results do not support the idea that the presence of the warm pool and/or of mean low-level equatorial westerlies are sufficient conditions for MJO-like variability to arise in the models. Comparing spectral characteristics of the simulated Convectively Coupled Equatorial Waves (CCEWs) in the aquaplanet experiments and the corresponding coupled atmosphere-ocean (i.e. CMIP) and atmosphere-only (i.e. AMIP) simulations, we also show that there is more consistency for a given model across its configurations, than for a given configuration across the six models. Overall, our results confirm that the simulation of sub-seasonal variability by given model is significantly influenced by the parameterization of sub-grid physical processes (most-likely cloud processes), both directly and through modulation of the mean state.

Abstract

The relationship between the large-scale intraseasonal variability, synoptic wind regimes, and the local daily variability of precipitation over the main island of New Caledonia (southwest tropical Pacific) is investigated with a focus on the austral summer wet season (November-April). The average diurnal cycle of precipitation over the island is characterized by a sharp afternoon maximum around 1600 local time, with significant differences between the windward east coast, the leeward west coast, and the mountain range. The afternoon peak is related to the afternoon sea-breeze circulation and to the diurnal cycle of convection over land. In general, its magnitude follows the same evolution as the daily mean. In agreement with past studies, a clear modulation of the Madden--Julian oscillation (MJO) on both the diurnal cycle of precipitation and the probability of occurrence of four robust wind regimes can be identified in the New Caledonia region during the wet season. From the evidence that there is a qualitative correspondence between the effects of both the MJO phases and the wind regimes on features in the diurnal cycle of precipitation, a simple model is proposed to inspect the MJO forcing mediated by wind regimes on the diurnal variability of rain. The complete decomposition of the MJO impact shows that the modulation of diurnal cycle by the MJO relies on complex interactions between the MJO and synoptic winds that involve both large-scale MJO convective anomalies and MJO-induced modification of wind patterns.
