Riassunto: Nel seguente lavoro di tesi si intende approfondire alcuni aspetti del funzionamento del sistema nervoso autonomo (SNA) e dei processi emozionali in soggetti con sindrome di Moebius, sindrome principalmente caratterizzata da paresi facciale unilaterale o bilaterale. Per tale scopo è stato utilizzando un metodo particolarmente innovativo in ambito neuroscientifico: l’Imaging termico infrarosso, una tecnica che permette di misurare in modo non invasivo la risposta autonomica dei soggetti mediante la rilevazione della variazione della temperatura corporea. La relazione tra la variazione della temperatura corporea e l’attività del SNA è da individuare nei fenomeni di vasocostrizione e vasodilatazione (con rispettiva diminuzione o aumento del flusso sanguigno) conseguenti all’attivazione della componente, rispettivamente, simpatica o parasimpatica del SNA. Gli studi etologici sulla filogenesi e l’ontogenesi dell’espressione delle emozioni, le ricerche psicologiche nell’ambito dell’infant research, che mostrano l’importanza dell’interazione emotiva caregiver-bambino per lo sviluppo cognitivo ed emotivo del bambino stesso, e le ricerche neuroscientifiche sul ruolo del sistema motorio nella comprensione delle azioni e delle emozioni, concorrono nel sottolineare la predisposizione del bambino ad interagire con gli altri sul piano emozionale, soprattutto tramite l’espressione delle emozioni facciali, già a partire dai primi mesi dopo la nascita. Tali ricerche evidenziano inoltre l’importanza dell’esperienza relazionale del bambino durante i periodi sensibili dello sviluppo proprio ai fini della strutturazione dei processi emozionali. I disturbi al sistema motorio facciale e i deficit a livello troncoencefalico presenti nella sindrome di Moebius potrebbero quindi interferire con i processi non solo di natura relazionale, ma anche sui processi cognitivi relativi al riconoscimento delle emozioni e sui processi emozionali in generale. Pertanto, obiettivo del seguente studio è descrivere eventuali anomalie in merito al processamento emozionale e alla risposta autonomica relativa a stimoli emotigeni nei soggetti affetti dalla sindrome. I risultati al Test of Emotion Comprehension (TEC-1), peggiori rispetto ai normosoggetti, e le risposte termiche anomale, caratterizzate da una non modulazione della temperatura rispetto alle diverse condizioni emotigene, da parte dei soggetti con sindrome di Moebius rispetto ai soggetti a sviluppo normale, suggeriscono quindi una possibile anomalia nella risposta autonomica e nel processamento di stimoli emozionali nei soggetti affetti dalla sindrome. Abstract: The goal of the present study is to describe the activity of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and the emotional processes in children with Moebius syndrome, a syndrome characterized by unilateral or bilateral facial paralysis. To record the autonomic responses of the participants an innovative neuroscientific method was used: the Thermal Infrared Imaging, a non-invasive technique that allows to measure the variation of the body temperature. The relation between the body temperature and the autonomic response can be explained by the vasomotor modulation and the consequent variation in the blood flow due to the activation of the sympathetic or parasympatethic division of the ANS. The ethological studies on the phylogenesis and the ontogenesis of the emotion expression, the psychological studies in the field of the infant research, that show the importance of the interaction between the caregiver and the baby for the cognitive and the emotional development of the child, and the neuroscientific research on the role of the motor system in the understanding other people’s actions and emotions, concur to underline the predisposition of the baby to interact with adults through the facial expressions of emotion since the first period of development. These researches show also the importance of the relational experience during the critical period of development of the baby for the correct structuration of his emotional processes. So, facial motor disease could interfere with both the relational experience of the baby and his cognitive process of emotion recognition. Given the fact that moebius syndrome is characterized by facial paralysis (due to the impairment of the VII cranial nerve), the goal of the present study is to describe possible anomalies in the autonomic activity of the children with moebius syndrome during the emotional processing of emotional stimuli. All moebius children reported worse TEC (Test of Emotion Comprehension). The thermic responses of the moebius children were different if compared with the normal ones, showing no modulation in term of intensity and pattern of variation during the different experimental conditions, suggesting an anomalous activity of the ANS. Errors in the recognition of the facial expressions and the anomalous ANS activity suggest the possibility of a deficit in the emotional processing in people with moebius syndrome.
