Part A, Toxic/hazardous substances & environmental engineering, 54, 2, 1153–1158 No estudo geriátrico dos efeitos na saúde da qualidade do ar interior em lares da 3.ª idade de Portugal (GERIA) foi estabelecido como objetivo principal de estudar os efeitos da qualidade do ar interior (IAQ) de equipamentos residenciais para pessoas idosos (ERPI) na saúde respiratória de idosos institucionalizados. Um total de 269 idosos responderam a um questionário elaborado pela equipa de investigadores do projeto GERIA, realizaram uma espirometria e a 150 idosos foi recolhida uma amostra de condensado brônquico exalado (EBC), para análise do respetivo pH e concentração de nitritos. Em relação aos dados sociodemográficos destaca se uma média de idade de 81,9±7,5 anos e uma maioria (70,6%) de idosos do sexo feminino. Relativamente aos resultados da espirometria, observou se que 14,5% apresentaram uma obstrução das vias aéreas. Os valores medianos das concentrações dos poluentes ambientais não revelaram uma concentração acima do referencial de segurança, porém foram observados valores máximos elevados e acima desse referencial. Da análise multivariada verificou se que cada incremento de 100 µg/m3 nos compostos orgânicos voláteis (TVOCS) se encontrava associado positiva mente a possibilidade acrescida dos idosos terem reportado infeção respiratória nos últimos três meses (=1.05; 95% CI: 1.00 to 1.09). Verificou se que o valor do pH diminuía com uma maior exposição a PM2,5 (= 0.04, 95%: 0.06 to 0.01e por cada aumento de 10 µg/m3). The axillary surgery in breast cancer has become progressively less invasive. Historically, all patients with a positive sentinela lymph node(SLN) biopsy result underwent axillary lymph node dissection(ALND). Recent trials show that ALND can be safely omitted in those women with clinically node negative, T1-T2 invasive breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and whole-breast radiotherapy. The SLN biopsy in node-positive patients with a radiologic axillary response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy is feasible and a sign of good practice. This change in practice has implications in study techniques of the SLN. The OSNA assay proved to be an effective technique with prognostic value.

Overview and Aims: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is increasingly being used in the treatment of operable breast cancer. Our aim was to evaluate the factors that predict pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in a Portuguese population of breast cancer patients. Study design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study. Population: Women diagnosed with breast cancer stage I-III treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and subsequent surgery in our institution during a 6-year period. Methods: Clinical records were reviewed. Patient demographics and tumour characteristics were evaluated. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to evaluate tumour’s clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics associated with pCR. Results: A total of 164 patients enrolled the sudy. The overall rate of pCR was 17.7%. The rate was significantly higher in HER2-positive (non-luminal) tumours (66.7%) and lower in luminal A tumours (0%). The nuclear grade, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), HER2 status and Ki67 proliferation index significantly influenced the rate of pCR. However, multivariate analysis revealed that only negative ER and positive HER2 are significant predictors of pCR [respectively, ORadj 0.187 (95% CI 0.038-0.908; p=0.038) and ORadj 4.186 (95% CI 1.401-12.508; p=0.010)]. Conclusion: ER status and HER2 status are the most important predictors of pathological complete response. These findings should be considered in patient counselling, providing a more customized therapeutic approach.

During periderm differentiation, phellem cells undergo secondary cell wall thickening by suberin deposition, forming a compact barrier shielding plant organs from the environment. Development and suberization of periderm cells are tightly controlled processes, however their regulation is still poorly understood. To identify novel regulators of these processes, we have conducted histological and transcriptomic analyses to follow periderm development in two model systems: Arabidopsis and cork oak (Q. suber). After a detailed spatio-temporal study of periderm formation in Arabidopsis roots, a transcriptomic analysis using TRAP-Seq targeting periderm cells at the onset of suberization was performed with the aim to identify tissue-specific regulators. We found 2433, out of 4631 differentially expressed genes overrepresented in suberizing cells. Through a functional enrichment analysis, several terms were found to be represented, as suberin biosynthesis, response to karrikin, cell wall metabolic process and response to abscisic acid. Possible candidate genes involved in control of phellem suberization will be identified and selected for further functional validation. Furthermore, in cork oak, histochemical analyses on 1-week old tap roots, showed a positive effect of drought and heat stress on periderm development. This system is now being used as a model to identify regulators of cork formation in this species. A comparative transcriptomic analysis based on different growth conditions and root differentiation stages was performed, revealing contrasting transcriptome changes between different root zones. Genes potentially involved in the crosstalk between cork development and response to environmental changes are being identified by integrating the results obtained from both plant systems. This knowledge might further contribute to design new strategies for the improvement of cork production under abiotic stress conditions.

Nas últimas décadas, o estudo do impacto da qualidade do ar interior (QAI) na saúde dos ocupantes tem aumentado significativamente, porém, a investigação nesta área tem sido direcionada principalmente para microambientes onde os indivíduos realizam as suas atividades durante o dia. Apesar de limitadas, existem algumas evidências relacionadas com o impacto da QAI nalguns parâmetros do sono, no entanto, estudos com uma caracterização abrangente dos contaminantes ambientais, nomeadamente microbiológicos, são ainda inexistentes. Background: Spirometry is the single most important test for the evaluation of respiratory function. The results are interpreted by comparing measured data with predicted values previously obtained from a reference population. Reference equations for spirometry have been discussed previously. The aim of this study was to compare reference values based on National Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey (NHANES III), European Community of Steel and Coal (ECSC), and Global Lung Initiative (GLI) equations in an elderly sample population. Methods: Subjects from the Geriatric Study on Health Effects of Air Quality in elder care centres who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Spirometry was performed according to international guidelines. The forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and FEV1/FVC ratio were reported as percentages of the predicted value, and the lower limit of normality was calculated. Results: Out of 260 elderly patients, 69.6% were women; the mean age was 83.0 ± 6.46 years with an age range of 65-95 years. The lowest %FVC and %FEV1 values were obtained using the GLI reference equations. However, when NHANES III equations were used, the FEV1/FVC ratio was higher than ratios obtained from GLI and ECSC equations. The prevalence of airway obstruction was highest using ECSC equations, while GLI equations demonstrated more restrictive defects. Conclusions: The present study showed meaningful differences in the reference values, and consequently, in the results obtained using NHANES III, ECSC, and GLI reference equations. O sistema respiratório sofre alterações inerentes ao envelhecimento que, aliadas à exposição ambiental e à carga tabágica contribuem para um maior declínio da função respiratória. Os testes de função respiratória (e.g. espirometria) contribuem para uma melhor identificação alterações ventilatórias nas vias aéreas, tendo em conta que idade avançada poderá ser um fator para má perceção de sintomas. Objetivo do estudo - Caracterizar o perfil espirométrico e os sintomas respiratórios em idosos sem história de doença respiratória, residentes num lar de Lisboa.

A Europa assiste ao envelhecimento da população, onde a doença respiratória assume relevância. Com o aumento da idade, da exposição à poluição ambiental e do tabagismo, a prevalência da Doença Pulmonar Obstrutiva Crónica (DPOC) tende a ser elevada, nomeadamente na população idosa. A idade avançada poderá associar-se com uma menor percepção de sintomas, pelo que a espirometria será útil nesta faixa etária. Objetivo do estudo - Descrever o resultado da espirometria com prova de broncodilatação, de acordo com os critérios GOLD e prevalência de sintomas respiratórios dos idosos residentes num lar de Lisboa.

A espirometria é o método de eleição para a identificação de alterações ventilatórias, porém é pouco utilizada em idosos pelo fato de habitualmente se considerar que estes não conseguem colaborar. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a colaboração na realização da espirometria antes e após administração de broncodilatador numa população de idosos residente num lar de Lisboa.

Mestrado em Marketing A sustentabilidade tem sido abraçada a diversos níveis na indústria imobiliária com o objectivo de reverter o seu significativo impacto negativo no meio ambiente. Os centros comerciais assumem uma posição particular na indústria imobiliária aos quais é atribuída uma crescente responsabilização social e ambiental por se tratarem de locais de consumo e lazer em grande escala. Os lojistas dos centros comerciais representam a principal fonte geradora de resíduos, pelo que é fundamental que a actividade dos lojistas esteja alinhada com a estratégia de RSE (Responsabilidade Social das Empresas) do centro comercial, para que uma verdadeira sustentabilidade seja atingida. O estudo incide na forma como a empresa Sonae Sierra, que detém, gere e desenvolve centros comerciais, potencia a sustentabilidade da marca junto dos lojistas que integram os seus centros comerciais. Realizou-se um estudo qualitativo com base em entrevistas em profundidade aos lojistas de centros comerciais Sonae Sierra em Portugal, no qual se procurou compreender qual o grau de adopção das práticas de RSE instituídas pela Sonae Sierra. Os lojistas conseguiram identificar várias acções implementadas pela empresa ao nível de RSE mas, de um modo geral, ainda se encontram pouco informados e demonstram pouca iniciativa na condução de um negócio sustentável em todos os sentidos. Algumas das iniciativas impostas pela Sonae Sierra apresentaram elevadas taxas de notoriedade entre os lojistas, o que pode sugerir a implementação de um maior número de práticas e métricas estipuladas a nível contratual. Sustainability has been embraced in the real estate industry to varying degrees with the aim of reversing its significant negative impact on the environment. Shopping centres take on a particular role in the real estate industry, to which a growing social and environmental responsibility is assigned on account of the consumption and leisure taking place on a large scale. Shopping centre tenants represent the main source of waste generation on site, ergo it is fundamental that tenants' activities align with the shopping centre CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy so that true sustainability can be achieved. The investigation focuses on the ways under which Sonae Sierra, shopping centre owner, manager and developer, enhances the sustainability of its brand among the tenants of their shopping centres. A qualitative study based on in-depth interviews to Sonae Sierra shopping centre tenants was conducted, in which the level of adoption of CSR practices established by Sonae Sierra was the subject of investigation. Tenants were able to identify several CSR practices implemented by Sonae Sierra but, in general, they are still uninformed and show little initiative in the conduction of an all-round sustainable business. Some of the initiatives imposed by Sonae Sierra showed high rates of awareness among tenants, which might induce the implementation of more practices and metrics set forth in a contractual level.

INTRODUCTION: Children spend a significant time of their days indoors, making it more susceptible to respiratory problems. Studies evaluating the relations between individual exposure to indoor pollutants and airways behavior are scarce. The evaluation of metabolites of nitric oxide (NO), namely nitrates (NO3-) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), is a good biomarker of airways inflammation. Objective: Evaluate the relationship between the NO3- concentration in EBC of children attending children day care centers and total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) assessed on those institutions. METHODOLOGY: At the 2nd phase of ENVIRH project, samplings of EBC were collected, using a disposable device (RTube), from a group of children in preschool age, attending day care centers within the city of Lisbon. After sampling collection, the samples were frozen at -40°C. For the NO3- measure in the EBC, a chemiluminescence analyzer (Sievers 280i NOATM) was used. From the IAQ analyzed parameters, we highlight the PM10, VOCs, mites, fungi, bacteria, temperature and relative humidity. For data analysis, two logistic random-intercept models were used. RESULTS: We collected 100 samples of EBC in children at preschool age, with a mean age of 5.0±0.6 years. 57% of the subjects were male. The average occupancy of school rooms was 19.73±3.97 children. The NO3- in EBC mean values were 4.42±1.60 μmol and VOCs median values were 200 μg/m3 (P25-P75: 82-436 μg/m3). When analyzing the association between IAQ parameters and bronchial inflammation, it was only found an association between VOCs and NO3-: regression coefficient ( ) = 0.32, IC 95%: 0.11 to 0.53, p=0.003. Conclusion: At this study, VOCs were the only IAQ parameter significantly associated with NO3- in EBC, as biomarker of bronchial inflammation. O aparelho respiratório é o sistema do organismo que envelhece mais rapidamente devido a maior exposição a poluentes ambientais ao longo dos anos. Os testes de função pulmonar, juntamente com uma avaliação correcta dos sintomas respiratórios, podem levar a um diagnóstico precoce de doenças respiratórias nos indivíduos idosos. A espirometria está indicada para ser aplicada nos idosos, sendo um dos métodos mais importantes para a avaliação e identificação de doença pulmonar. Objectivo geral: caracterizar o perfil espirométrico dos idosos de dois centros de saúde do concelho de Loures. Objectivos específicos: descrever os parâmetros espirométricos da amostra em estudo; identificar o número de alterações obstrutivas e respectiva gravidade; identificar o número de eventuais alterações restritivas e respectiva gravidade; verificar a associação entre as variáveis género, tabagismo e doença respiratória conhecida com existência de alterações ventilatórias.
