LANDSAT imagery was interpreted to derive color coded maps of the physical parameters of the Alaskan coastal zone. Synoptic overviews depict sea surface circulation, sediment transport, and ice cover dimensions.

A pilot project conducted to demonstrate the utility and economy of satellite data in preparing thematic maps of a wilderness area emphasizing those resources of greatest interest to the potential owner is described. Vegetation maps delineating potential commercial timber and maps of suggested mineral prospecting areas of seven scattered regions were prepared by interpretation of LANDSAT images, coupled with a limited amount of ground truth. Images acquired both in winter and summer seasons were registered to township maps and used in making interpretations of the areal extent of commercial timber potentials. The amount of snow cover visible through the forest canopies was found to be a useful indicator of timber potentials. Identification was made of characteristic topographic features which are typical of flood plain deposits or of the well developed trellis drainage patterns which can indicate the strike of structural grain of underlying Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The presence of igneous and mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks were indicated by combinations of spectral differences and anomalous interruptions of local radial drainage patterns.

Landsat data remains a vital tool for the management of resources in Alaska. Utilization of these data by many agencies in Alaska trends toward the solution to operational problems in a wide spectrum of disciplinary applications. Four examples of current applications are reviewed briefly: mapping of coastal sediment plumes, mapping of coastal zone ecosystems, mapping of landform and ground cover for proposed national parks and forests, and evaluation of seismic risks for a proposed hydroelectric project.

Coupling of satellite data to resource management problems in Alaska is implemented through feasibility studies of applicability of Landsat data to specific environmental surveys in ecology, agriculture, hydrology, wildlife management, oceanography, geology, etc.; and using the results of these studies to extend the benefits of satellite data applications to the operational needs of mission-oriented agencies of federal, state, and regional governments, as well as private industry. Activities designed to encourage the participation of users in the Landsat program at levels most appropriate to the users' interests are described and include: observation, coordination, and information exchange; training courses and workshops; data exchange; consulting services; data processing services; user participation in University research projects; and university participation in the operational projects of user agencies. Progress in these areas is reported. The effectiveness of this broad-based approach in overcoming the initial apprehensiveness of users is demonstrated.

ERTS has proven to be an exceedingly useful tool for the preparation of urgently needed resource surveys in Alaska. For this reason the wide utilization of ERTS data by federal, state and industrial agencies in Alaska is increasingly directed toward the solution of operational problems in resource inventories, environmental surveys, and land use planning. Examples of some applications are discussed in connection with surveys of potential agricultural lands; mapping of predicted archaeological sites; permafrost terrain and aufeis mapping; snow melt enhancement from Prudhoe Bay roads; geologic interpretations correlated ith possible new petroleum fields, with earthquake activity, and with plate tectonic motion along the Denali fault system; hydrology in monitoring surging glaciers and the break-up characteristics of the Chena River watershed; sea-ice morphology correlated with marine mammal distribution; and coastal sediment plume circulation patterns.

ERTS data affords a unique opportunity to perform urgently needed resource surveys and land use planning at a critical juncture in the history of Alaska's social and economic development. The available facilities for photographic, optical and digital processing of ERTS data are described, along with the interpretive techniques which have been developed. Examples of the applications of these facilities and techniques are given for three environmental disciplines: vegetation mapping for potential archeological sites; marine and sea ice surveys on the Alaskan continental shelf for the determination of surface circulation and sedimentation patterns and their effects on navigation, pollution assessment, fisheries, location of habors and construction of off-shore structures; snow surveys for inventories of water resources and flood potential in Alaska watersheds.

The author has identified the following significant results. The objective of this project is to provide a focus for the entire University of Alaska ERTS-1 effort (12 projects covering 10 disciplines and involving 8 research institutes and science departments). Activities have been concentrated on the implementation of the project's three primary functions: (1) coordination and management of the U of A ERTS-1 program, including management of the flow of data and data products; (2) acquisition, installation, test, operation, and maintanence of centralized facilities for processing ERTS-1, aircraft, and ground truth data; and (3) development of photographic and digital techniques for processing and interpreting ERTS-1 and aircraft data. With minor exceptions these three functions are now well-established and working smoothly.

The ERTS program provides a means to overcome the formidable logistic and economic costs of preparing environmental surveys of the vast and relatively unexplored regions of Alaska. There is an excellent potential in satellite remote sensing to benefit Federal, state, local, and private agencies, by providing a new synoptic data base which is necessary for the preparation of the needed surveys and the search for solutions to environmental management problems. One approach in coupling satellite data to Alaskan problems is a major program initiated by the University of Alaska and funded by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. This included 12 projects whose aims were to study the feasibility of applying ERTS data to the disciplines of ecology, agriculture, hydrology, wildlife management, oceanography, geology, glaciology, volcanology, and archaeology.

The application of ERTS-1 imagery for a multidisciplinary study of Alaskan resources is discussed. ERTS-1 data form a politically neutral base from which resource surveys can be made without arousing suspicions from groups which have mutually confliciting goals. The specific use of ERTS-1 imagery for monitoring migratory animals, pipeline locations, road construction, snow cover, and vegetation growth is reported. Maps, illustrations, and photographs are provided to support the data.

The author has identified the following significant results. A reconstituted, simulated color-infrared ERTS-1 image covering the western Seward Peninsula was prepared and it is used for identifying and mapping vegetation types by direct visual examination. The image, NASA ERTS E-1009-22095, was obtained approximately at 1110 hours, 165 degrees WMT on August 1, 1972. Seven major colors are identified. Four of these are matched with units on existing vegetation maps: bright red - shrub thicket; light gray-red - upland tundra; medium gray-red - coastal coastal wet tundra; gray - alpine barrens. The three colors having no map equivalents are tentatively interpreted as follows: pink - grassland tundra; dark gray-red - burn scars; light orange-red - senescent vegetation. A vegetation map, drawn by tracing on an acetate overlay of the image is presented. Significantly more information is depicted than on existing maps with regards to vegetation types and their areal distribution. Furthermore the preparation of the new map from ERTS-1 imagery required little time relative to conventional methods and extent of areal coverage.
