Single-dish observations suggest that the abundances of organic species in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy, characterised by sub-Solar metallicities, are comparable to those found in the local Galaxy. To understand this counter-intuitive result, and avoid misleading interpretation due to beam dilution effects at such large distances, spatially resolved molecular emission maps are needed to link correctly measured abundances and local physical properties. We observed several organic molecules with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array towards WB89-671, the source with the largest Galactocentric distance (23.4~kpc) of the project "CHEMical complexity in star-forming regions of the OUTer Galaxy" (CHEMOUT), at a resolution of 15000~au. We compared the observed molecular abundances with chemical model predictions. We detected emission of c-C3H2, C4H, CH3OH, H2CO, HCO, H13CO+, HCS+, CS, HN13C, and SO. The emission morphology is complex, extended, and different in each tracer. The most intense emission in H13CO+, H2CO and c-C3H2 arises from two millimeter continuum, infrared-bright cores. The most intense CH3OH and SO emission arises predominantly from the part of the filament with no continuum sources. The narrow linewidths across the filament indicate quiescent gas, despite the two embedded protostars. Derived molecular column densities are comparable with those in local star-forming regions, and suggest anti-correlation between hydrocarbons, ions, HCO, and H2CO on one side, and CH3OH and SO on the other. Static chemical models that best match the observed column densities favour low energetic conditions, expected at large Galactocentric radii, but carbon elemental abundances 3 times higher than that derived extrapolating the [C/H] Galactocentric gradient at 23~kpc. This study presents the design, simulation, and experimental characterization of a superconducting transmon qubit circuit prototype for potential applications in dark matter detection experiments. We describe a planar circuit design featuring two non-interacting transmon qubits, one with fixed frequency and the other flux tunable. Finite-element simulations were employed to extract key Hamiltonian parameters and optimize component geometries. The qubit was fabricated and then characterized at $20$ mK, allowing for a comparison between simulated and measured qubit parameters. Good agreement was found for transition frequencies and anharmonicities (within 1\% and 10\% respectively) while coupling strengths exhibited larger discrepancies (30\%). We discuss potential causes for measured coherence times falling below expectations ($T_1\sim\,$1-2 \textmu s) and propose strategies for future design improvements. Notably, we demonstrate the application of a hybrid 3D-2D simulation approach for energy participation ratio evaluation, yielding a more accurate estimation of dielectric losses. This work represents an important first step in developing planar Quantum Non-Demolition (QND) single-photon counters for dark matter searches, particularly for axion and dark photon detection schemes.

The increasing number of observations towards different environments in the Milky Way, as well as theoretical and experimental works, are improving our knowledge of the astrochemical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this chapter we report some of the main projects to study the chemical complexity and isotopic ratios across the Galaxy. High-sensitivity spectral surveys covering broad bandwidths towards Galactic Center molecular clouds (e.g. G+0.693-0.027) and star-forming regions (e.g. the hot core G31.41+0.31) are revealing very rich astrochemical reservoirs, which include molecules of prebiotic interest. At the same time, isotopic ratios (e.g. $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C and $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N) can give important information on the Galactic chemical evolution, as well as on chemical local processes due to the physical conditions of the molecular clouds. We use data from the ALMA Evolutionary Study of High Mass Protocluster Formation in the Galaxy (ALMAGAL) survey to study 100 ALMAGAL regions at $\sim$ 1 arsecond resolution located between $\sim$ 2 and 6 kpc distance. Using ALMAGAL $\sim$ 1.3mm line and continuum data we estimate flow rates onto individual cores. We focus specifically on flow rates along filamentary structures associated with these cores. Our primary analysis is centered around position velocity cuts in H$_2$CO (3$_{0,3}$ - 2$_{0,2}$) which allow us to measure the velocity fields, surrounding these cores. Combining this work with column density estimates we derive the flow rates along the extended filamentary structures associated with cores in these regions. We select a sample of 100 ALMAGAL regions covering four evolutionary stages from quiescent to protostellar, Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), and HII regions (25 each). Using dendrogram and line analysis, we identify a final sample of 182 cores in 87 regions. In this paper, we present 728 flow rates for our sample (4 per core), analysed in the context of evolutionary stage, distance from the core, and core mass. On average, for the whole sample, we derive flow rates on the order of $\sim$10$^{-4}$ M$_{sun}$yr$^{-1}$ with estimated uncertainties of $\pm$50%. We see increasing differences in the values among evolutionary stages, most notably between the less evolved (quiescent/protostellar) and more evolved (YSO/HII region) sources. We also see an increasing trend as we move further away from the centre of these cores. We also find a clear relationship between the flow rates and core masses $\sim$M$^{2/3}$ which is in line with the result expected from the tidal-lobe accretion mechanism. Context. Dust polarization observations of the massive protocluster G31.41+0.31 carried out at ~1'' (~3750 au) resolution with the SMA at 870 microm have revealed one of the clearest examples to date of an hourglass-shaped magnetic field morphology in the high-massregime. Additionally, ~0.24'' (~900 au) resolution observations with ALMA at 1.3 mm have confirmed these results. The next step is to investigate whether the magnetic field maintains its hourglass-shaped morphology down to circumstellar scales. Aims. To study the magnetic field morphology toward the four (proto)stars A, B, C, and D contained in G31.41+0.31 and examine whether the self-similarity observed at core scales (1'' and 0.24'' resolution) still holds at circumstellar scales, we carried out ALMA observations of the polarized dust continuum emission at 1.3 mm and 3.1 mm at an angular resolution of ~0.068'' (~250 au), sufficient to resolve the envelope emission of the embedded protostars. Methods. We used ALMA to perform full polarization observations at 233 GHz (Band 6) and 97.5 GHz (Band 3) with a synthesized beam of 0.072'' x 0.064''. We carried out polarization observations at two different wavelengths to confirm that the polarization traces magnetically aligned dust grains and is not due to dust self-scattering. Results. The polarized emission and the direction of the magnetic field obtained at the two wavelengths are basically the same, except for an area between the embedded sources C and B. Most stars, including the Sun, are born in rich stellar clusters containing massive stars. Therefore, the study of the chemical reservoir of massive star-forming regions is crucial to understand the basic chemical ingredients available at the dawn of planetary systems. We present a detailed study of the molecular inventory of the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 from the project GUAPOS (G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey). We analyze 34 species for the first time plus 20 species analyzed in previous GUAPOS works, including oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine species. We compare the abundances derived in G31.41+0.31 with those observed in other chemically-rich sources that represent the initial and last stages of the formation of stars and planets: the hot corino in the Solar-like protostar IRAS 16293-2422 B, and the comets 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and 46P/Wirtanen. The comparative analysis reveals that the chemical feedstock of the two star-forming regions are similar. The abundances of oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules exhibit a good correlation for all pair of sources, including the two comets, suggesting a chemical heritage of these species during the process of star formation, and hence an early phase formation of the molecules. However, sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species present worse correlations, being more abundant in comets. This suggests that while sulfur- and phosphorus-bearing species are predominantly trapped on the surface of icy grains in the hot close surroundings of protostars, they could be more easily released into gas phase in comets, allowing their cosmic abundances to be almost recovered., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

The astrochemistry of the important biogenic element phosphorus (P) is still poorly understood, but observational evidence indicates that P-bearing molecules are likely associated with shocks. We study P-bearing molecules, as well as some shock tracers, towards one of the chemically richest hot molecular core, G31.41+0.31, in the framework of the project "G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey" (GUAPOS), observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We have observed the molecules PN, PO, SO, SO2, SiO, and SiS, through their rotational lines in the spectral range 84.05-115.91 GHz, covered by the GUAPOS project. PN is clearly detected while PO is tentatively detected. The PN emission arises from two regions southwest of the hot core peak, "1" and "2", and is undetected or tentatively detected towards the hot core peak. the PN and SiO lines are very similar both in spatial emission morphology and spectral shape. Region "1" is in part overlapping with the hot core and it is warmer than region "2", which is well separated from the hot core and located along the outflows identified in previous studies. The column density ratio SiO/PN remains constant in regions "1" and "2", while SO/PN, SiS/PN, and SO2/PN decrease by about an order of magnitude from region "1" to region "2", indicating that SiO and PN have a common origin even in regions with different physical conditions. Our study firmly confirms previous observational evidence that PN emission is tightly associated with SiO and it is likely a product of shock-chemistry, as the lack of a clear detection of PN towards the hot-core allows to rule out relevant formation pathways in hot gas. Methods: Observing the large pc-scale Stokes I mm dust continuum emission with the IRAM 30m telescope and the intermediate-scale (<0.1pc) polarized submm dust emission with the Submillimeter Array toward a sample of 20 high-mass star-forming regions allows us to quantify the dependence of the fragmentation behaviour of these regions depending on the density and magnetic field structures. Results: We infer density distributions n~r^{-p} of the regions with typical power-law slopes p around ~1.5. There is no obvious correlation between the power-law slopes of the density structures on larger clump scales (~1pc) and the number of fragments on smaller core scales (<0.1pc). Comparing the large-scale single-dish density profiles to those derived earlier from interferometric observations at smaller spatial scales, we find that the smaller-scale power-law slopes are steeper, typically around ~2.0. The flattening toward larger scales is consistent with the star-forming regions being embedded in larger cloud structures that do not decrease in density away from a particular core. Regarding the magnetic field, for several regions it appears aligned with filamentary structures leading toward the densest central cores. Furthermore, we find different polarization structures with some regions exhibiting central polarization holes whereas other regions show polarized emission also toward the central peak positions. Nevertheless, the polarized intensities are inversely related to the Stokes I intensities. We estimate magnetic field strengths between ~0.2 and ~4.5mG, and we find no clear correlation between magnetic field strength and the fragmentation level of the regions. Comparison of the turbulent to magnetic energies shows that they are of roughly equal importance in this sample. The role of massive ($\geq$ 8M$_{\odot}$) stars in defining the energy budget and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium in their host galaxy is significant. In this first paper from the Tracing Evolution in Massive Protostellar Objects (TEMPO) project we introduce a colour-luminosity selected (L$_*$ $\sim$ 3$\times10^3$ to 1$\times10^5$ L$_{\odot}$) sample of 38 massive star forming regions observed with ALMA at 1.3mm and explore the fragmentation, clustering and flux density properties of the sample. The TEMPO sample fields are each found to contain multiple fragments (between 2-15 per field). The flux density budget is split evenly (53%-47%) between fields where emission is dominated by a single high flux density fragment and those in which the combined flux density of fainter objects dominates. The fragmentation scales observed in most fields are not comparable with the thermal Jeans length, $\lambda_J$, being larger in the majority of cases, suggestive of some non-thermal mechanism. A tentative evolutionary trend is seen between luminosity of the clump and the `spectral line richness' of the TEMPO fields; with 6.7GHz maser associated fields found to be lower luminosity and more line rich. The G31.41+0.31 Unbiased ALMA sPectral Observational Survey (GUAPOS) project targets the hot molecular core (HMC) G31.41+0.31 (G31), to unveil the complex chemistry of one of the most chemically rich high-mass star-forming regions outside the Galactic Center (GC). In the third paper of the project, we present a study of nine O-bearing (CH$_3$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, CH$_3^{18}$OH, CH$_3$CHO, CH$_3$OCH$_3$, CH$_3$COCH$_3$ , C$_2$H$_5$OH, aGg'-(CH$_2$OH)$_2$, and gGg'-(CH$_2$OH)$_2$) and six N-bearing (CH$_3$CN, $^{13}$CH$_3$CN, CH$_3^{13}$CN, C$_2$H$_3$CN, C$_2$H$_5$CN, and C$_2$H$_5^{13}$CN) complex organic molecules toward G31. The aim of this work is to characterize the abundances in one of the most chemically-rich hot molecular cores outside the GC and to search for a possible chemical segregation between O-bearing and N-bearing species in G31, which hosts four compact sources as seen with higher angular resolution data. Observations were carried out with the interferometer ALMA and covered the entire Band 3 from 84 to 116 GHz ($\sim 32$ GHz bandwidth) with an angular resolution of $1.2''$ ($\sim4400\,\mathrm{au}$). The spectrum has been analyzed with the tool SLIM of MADCUBA to determine the physical parameters of the emitting gas. Moreover, we have analyzed the morphology of the emission of the molecular species. We have compared the abundances w.r.t methanol of COMs in G31 with other twenty-seven sources, including other hot molecular cores inside and outside the Galactic Center, hot corinos, shocked regions, envelopes around young stellar objects, and quiescent molecular clouds, and with chemical models. Different species peak at slightly different positions, and this, together with the different central velocities of the lines obtained from the spectral fitting, point to chemical differentiation of selected O-bearing species., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 39 pages

The factor relating CO emission to molecular hydrogen column density, XCO, is still subject to uncertainty, in particular at low metallicity. Here, to quantify XCO at two different spatial resolutions, we exploit a dust-based method together with ALMA 12-m and ACA data and HI maps of three nearby metal-poor starbursts, NGC625, NGC1705, and NGC5253. Dust opacity at 250pc resolution is derived based on dust temperatures estimated by fitting two-temperature modified blackbodies to Herschel PACS data. By using the HI maps, we are then able to estimate dust-to-gas ratios in the atomic-gas dominated regions, and infer total gas column densities and H2 column densities as the difference with HI. Finally, from the ACA CO(1-0) maps, we derive XCO. We use a similar technique with 40 pc ALMA 12-m data for the three galaxies, but instead derive dust attenuation at 40 pc resolution from reddening maps based on VLT/MUSE data. At 250 pc resolution, XCO $\sim$ 10^22 - 10^23 cm^-2 / K.km/s, 5-1000 times the Milky Way value, with much larger values than would be expected from a simple metallicity dependence. Instead at 40 pc resolution, XCO again shows large variation, but is roughly consistent with a power-law metallicity dependence, given the Z $\sim$ 1/3 Zsun metal abundances of our targets. The large scatter in both estimations could imply additional parameter dependence, that we have investigated by comparing XCO with the observed velocity-integrated brightness temperatures, ICO, as predicted by recent simulations. Indeed, larger XCO is significantly correlated with smaller ICO, but with slightly different slopes and normalizations than predicted by theory. Such behavior can be attributed to the increasing fraction of CO-faint H2 gas with lower spatial resolution. The fragmentation mode of high-mass molecular clumps and the accretion processes that form the most massive stars ($M\gtrsim 8M_\odot$) are still not well understood. To this end, we have undertaken a large observational program (CORE) making use of interferometric observations from the Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) for a sample of 20 luminous ($L>10^4L_\odot$) protostellar objects in the 1.37 mm wavelength regime in both continuum and line emission, reaching $\sim$0.4" resolution (800 au at 2 kpc). Using the dense gas tracer CH$_3$CN, we find velocity gradients across 13 cores perpendicular to the directions of bipolar molecular outflows, making them excellent disk candidates. Specific angular momentum ($j$) radial profiles are on average $\sim10^{-3}$ km /s pc and follow $j \propto r^{1.7}$, consistent with a poorly resolved rotating and infalling envelope/disk model. Fitting the velocity profiles with a Keplerian model, we find protostellar masses in the range of $\sim 10-25$ $M_\odot$. Modelling the level population of CH$_3$CN lines, we present temperature maps and find median gas temperatures in the range $70-210$ K. We create Toomre $Q$ maps to study the stability of the disks and find almost all (11 of 13) disk candidates to be prone to fragmentation due to gravitational instabilities at the scales probed by our observations. In particular, disks with masses greater than $\sim10-20\%$ of the mass of their host (proto)stars are Toomre unstable, and more luminous protostellar objects tend to have disks that are more massive and hence more prone to fragmentation. Our finings show that most disks around high-mass protostars are prone to disk fragmentation early in their formation due to their high disk to stellar mass ratio. We exploit the increased sensitivity of the recently installed AO SOUL at the LBT to obtain new high-spatial-resolution NIR images of the massive young stellar object IRAS20126+4104 and its outflow. We aim to derive the jet proper motions and kinematics, as well as to study its photometric variability by combining the novel performances of SOUL together with previous NIR images. We used both broad-band ($K_{s}$, $K'$) and narrow-band (Br$\gamma$, H2) observations from a number of NIR cameras (UKIRT/UFTI,SUBARU/CIAO,TNG/NICS,LBT/PISCES,and LBT/LUCI1) to derive maps of the continuum and the H$_2$ emission in the 2.12 $\mu$m line. Three sets of images, obtained with AO systems (CIAO,2003; FLAO,2012; SOUL,2020), allowed us to derive the proper motions of a large number of H$_2$ knots along the jet. Photometry from all images was used to study the jet variability. We derived knot proper motions in the range of 1.7-20.3 mas yr$^{-1}$ (i.e. 13-158 km s$^{-1}$ at 1.64 kpc, avg. outflow tangential velocity $\sim$ 80 km s$^{-1}$). The derived knot dynamical age spans a $\sim$ 200-4000 yr interval. A ring-like H$_2$ feature near the protostar location exhibits peculiar kinematics and may represent the outcome of a wide-angle wind impinging on the outflow cavity. Both H$_2$ geometry and velocities agree with those inferred from proper motions of the H$_2$O masers, located at a smaller distance from the protostar. Although the total H$_2$ line emission from the knots does not exhibit time variations at a $\widetilde{>}$ 0.3 mag level, we have found a clear continuum flux variation (radiation scattered by the dust in the cavity opened by the jet) which is anti-correlated between the blue-shifted and red-shifted lobes and may be periodic (with a period of $\sim$ 12-18 yr). Nitrogen isotopic ratios are a key tool for tracing Galactic stellar nucleosynthesis. We present the first study of the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N abundance ratio in the outer regions of the Milky Way (namely, for galactocentric distances, $R_{\rm GC}$, from 12 kpc up to 19 kpc), with the aim to study the stellar nucleosynthesis effects in the global Galactic trend. We analysed IRAM 30m observations towards a sample of 35 sources in the context of the CHEMical complexity in star-forming regions of the OUTer Galaxy (CHEMOUT) project. We derived the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratios from HCN and HNC for 14 and 3 sources, respectively, using the $J$ = 1-0 rotational transition of HN$^{13}$C, H$^{15}$NC, H$^{13}$CN, and HC$^{15}$N. The results found in the outer Galaxy have been combined with previous measurements obtained in the inner Galaxy. We find an overall linear decreasing H$^{13}$CN/HC$^{15}$N ratio with increasing $R_{\rm GC}$. This translates to a parabolic $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratio with a peak at 11 kpc. Updated Galactic chemical evolution models have been taken into account and compared with the observations. The parabolic trend of the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratio with $R_{\rm GC}$ can be naturally explained (i) by a model that assumes novae as the main $^{15}$N producers on long timescales ($\ge$1 Gyr) and (ii) by updated stellar yields for low- and intermediate-mass stars., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, 4 appendix - Accepted for publication in A&A

No statistical study of COMs toward a large sample of high-mass protostars with ALMA has been carried out so far. We aim to study six N-bearing species: CH$_3$CN, HNCO, NH$_2$CHO, C$_2$H$_5$CN, C$_2$H$_3$CN and CH$_3$NH$_2$ in a large sample of high-mass protostars. From the ALMAGAL survey, 37 of the most line-rich hot molecular cores are selected. Next, we fit their spectra and find column densities and excitation temperatures of the above N-bearing species, in addition to CH$_3$OH. We (tentatively) detect CH$_3$NH$_2$ in $\sim32%$ of the sources. We find three groups of species when comparing their excitation temperatures: hot (NH$_2$CHO; Tex > 250 K), warm (C$_2$H$_3$CN, HN$^{13}$CO and CH$_{3}^{13}$CN; 100 K < Tex < 250 K) and cold species (CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$NH$_2$; Tex < 100 K). This temperature segregation reflects the trend seen in their sublimation temperatures and validates the idea of onion-like structure of COMs around protostars. Moreover, the molecules studied here show constant column density ratios across low- and high-mass protostars with scatter less than a factor $\sim3$ around the mean. The constant column density ratios point to a common formation environment of COMs or their precursors, most likely in the pre-stellar ices. The scatter around the mean of the ratios, although small, varies depending on the species considered. This spread can either have a physical origin (source structure, line or dust optical depth) or a chemical one. Formamide is most prone to the physical effects as it is tracing the closest regions to the protostars, whereas such effects are small for other species. Assuming that all molecules form in the pre-stellar ices, the scatter variations could be explained by differences in lifetimes or physical conditions of the pre-stellar clouds. The deuteration of molecules forming in the ices such as methanol (CH$_3$OH) is sensitive to the physical conditions during their formation in dense cold clouds and can be probed through observations of deuterated methanol in hot cores. Observations with ALMA containing transitions of CH$_3$OH, CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, and CH$_3^{18}$OH are investigated. The column densities of CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, and CH$_3$OH are determined for all sources, where the column density of CH$_3$OH is derived from optically thin $^{13}$C and $^{18}$O isotopologues. Consequently, the D/H ratio of methanol is derived taking statistical effects into account. Singly deuterated methanol (CH$_2$DOH) is detected toward 25 of the 99 sources in our sample of the high-mass protostars. Including upper limits, the $\rm (D/H)_{CH_3OH}$ ratio inferred from $N_\mathrm{CH_2DOH}/N_\mathrm{CH_3OH}$ was derived for 38 of the 99 sources and varies between $\sim10^{-3}-10^{-2}$. Including other high-mass hot cores from the literature, the mean methanol D/H ratio is $1.1\pm0.7\times10^{-3}$. This is more than one order of magnitude lower than what is seen for low-mass protostellar systems ($2.2\pm1.2\times10^{-2}$). Doubly deuterated methanol (CHD$_2$OH) is detected toward 11 of the 99 sources. Including upper limits for 15 sources, the $\rm (D/H)_{CH_2DOH}$ ratios derived from $N_\mathrm{CHD_2OH}/N_\mathrm{CH_2DOH}$ are more than two orders of magnitude higher than $\rm (D/H)_{CH_3OH}$ with an average of $2.0\pm0.8\times10^{-1}$ which is similar to what is found for low-mass sources. Comparison with literature GRAINOBLE models suggests that the high-mass prestellar phases are either warm ($>20$ K) or live shorter than the free-fall timescale. The outer Galaxy is an environment with metallicity lower than the Solar one and, because of this, the formation and survival of molecules in star-forming regions located in the inner and outer Galaxy is expected to be different. To gain understanding on how chemistry changes throughout the Milky Way, it is crucial to observe outer Galaxy star-forming regions to constrain models adapted for lower metallicity environments. The project "chemical complexity in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy" (CHEMOUT) aims to address this problem observing a sample of 35 high-mass star-forming cores at Galactocentric distances up to ~23 kpc with the IRAM 30m telescope in various 3mm and 2mm bands. In this work we analyse observations of methanol (CH3OH), one of the simplest complex organic molecules crucial for organic chemistry in star-forming regions, and of two chemically related species, HCO and formaldehyde (H2CO), towards 15 out of the 35 targets of the CHEMOUT sample. In fact, only targets previously detected in both HCO and H2CO, both precursors of methanol, were considered. We detected CH3OH in all 15 targets. Using a Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium approach, we derive CH3OH excitation temperatures in the range 7 - 16 K and line widths smaller than 4 km/s, consistent with emission from a cold and quiescent envelope. The CH3OH fractional abundances w.r.t. H2 range between ~0.6 x 10^{-9} and ~7.4 x 10^{-9}. These values are comparable to those found in star-forming regions in the inner and local Galaxy. Our results have important implications in the organic, and possibly pre-biotic, chemistry occurring in the outermost star-forming regions of the Galaxy, and can help setting the frontiers of the Galactic habitable zone., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

The G31.41+0.31 (G31) hot molecular core (HMC) is a high-mass protocluster showing accelerated infall and rotational spin-up that is well studied at high-angular resolution. To complement the accurate view of the small scale in G31, we have traced the kinematics of the large-scale material by carrying out N$_2$H$^+$\,(1--0) observations with the IRAM 30m telescope of an area of $\sim$6$\times6$\,arcmin$^2$ around the HMC. The N$_2$H$^+$ observations have revealed a large-scale (5\,pc) hub-filament system (HFS) composed by at least four filamentary arms and a NNE--SSW velocity gradient ($\sim$0.4\,km/s/pc) between the northern and southern filaments. The linewidth increases towards the hub at the center of the HFS reaching values of 2.5--3\,km\,s$^{-1}$ in the central 1\,pc. The origin of the large-scale velocity gradient is likely cloud-cloud collision. In this scenario, the filaments in G31 would have formed by compression resulting from the collision and the rotation of the HMC observed at scales of 1000\,au would have been induced by shear caused by the cloud-cloud collision at scales of a few pc. We conclude that G31 represents a HFS in a compressed layer with an orthogonal orientation to the plane of the sky, and represents a benchmark for the filaments-to-clusters paradigm of star formation., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The outer Galaxy is an environment with metallicity lower than the Solar one. Because of this, the formation and survival of molecules in star-forming regions located in the inner and outer Galaxy is expected to be different. To gain understanding on how chemistry changes throughout the Milky Way, it is crucial to observe outer Galaxy star-forming regions to constrain models adapted for lower metallicity environments. In this paper we present a new observational project: chemical complexity in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy (CHEMOUT). The goal is to unveil the chemical composition in 35 dense molecular clouds associated with star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy through observations obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. In this first paper, we present the sample, and report the detection at 3~mm of simple organic species HCO+, H13CO+, HCN, c-C3H2, HCO, C4H, and HCS+, of the complex hydrocarbon CH3CCH, and of SiO, CCS and SO. From c-C3H2, we estimate new kinematic heliocentric and Galactocentric distances based on an updated rotation curve of the Galaxy. The detection of the molecular tracers does not seem to have a clear dependence on the Galactocentric distance. We also analyse the HCO+ line profiles. We find high velocity wings in ~71% of the targets, and their occurrence does not depend on the Galactocentric distance. Our results, confirmed by a statistical analysis, show that the presence of organic molecules and tracers of protostellar activity is ubiquitous in the low-metallicity environment of the outer Galaxy. Based on this, and on the additional evidence that small, terrestrial planets are omnipresent in the Galaxy, we support previous claims that the definition of Galactic Habitable Zone should be rediscussed in view of the ubiquitous capacity of the interstellar medium to form organic molecules., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

Complex organic molecules (COMs) are often observed toward embedded Class 0 and I protostars. However, not all Class 0 and I protostars exhibit COMs emission. In this work, variations in methanol (CH$_3$OH) emission are studied to test if absence of CH$_3$OH emission can be linked to source properties. Combining both new and archival observations with ALMA and sources from the literature, a sample of 184 low-mass and high-mass protostars is investigated. The warm (T > 100 K) gaseous CH$_3$OH mass, $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$, is determined for each source using primarily optically thin isotopologues. On average, Class I protostellar systems seem to have less warm $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$ ($<10^{-10}$ M$_\odot$) than younger Class 0 sources ($\sim10^{-7}$ M$_\odot$). High-mass sources in our sample show higher warm $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$ up to $10^{-7}-10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$. To take into account the effect of the source's overall mass on $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$, a normalized CH$_3$OH mass is defined as $M_{\rm CH_3OH}/M_{\rm dust,0}$, where $M_{\rm dust,0}$ is the cold + warm dust mass within a fixed radius. Excluding upper limits, a simple power-law fit to the normalized warm CH$_3$OH masses results in $M_{\rm CH_3OH}/M_{\rm dust,0}\propto L_{\rm bol}^{0.70\pm0.05}$. This is in good agreement with a simple hot core toy model which predicts that the normalized $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$ increases with $L_{\rm bol}^{0.75}$ due to the snowline moving outward. Sources for which the size of the disk is equivalent or smaller than the estimated 100 K radius agree well with the best-fit power-law model, whereas sources with significantly larger disks show up to two orders of magnitude lower normalized warm CH$_3$OH masses. Based on the latter results, we suggest that source structure such as a disk can result in colder gas and thus fewer COMs in the gas phase. Context. To better understand the formation of high-mass stars, it is fundamental to investigate how matter accretes onto young massive stars, how it is ejected, and how all this differs from the low-mass case. The massive protocluster G31.41+0.31 is the ideal target to study all these processes because observations at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths have resolved the emission of the Main core into at least four massive dust continuum sources, named A, B, C, and D, within 1" or 0.018 pc, and have identified signatures of infall and several outflows associated with the core. Aims. We study the interplay between infall and outflow in G31.41+0.31 by investigating at a spatial resolution of a few 100 au their properties and their possible impact on the core. Methods. We carried out molecular line observations of typical high-density tracers, such as CH3CN or H2CO, and shock and outflow tracers, such as SiO, with ALMA at 1.4 mm that achieved an angular resolution of 0.09" (340 au). Results. The observations have revealed inverse P-Cygni profiles in CH3CN and H2CO toward the four sources embedded in the Main core, suggesting that all of them are undergoing collapse. The infall rates, estimated from the red-shifted absorption are on the order of 1E-2 Msun/yr. The individual infall rates imply that the accretion timescale of the Main core is an order of magnitude smaller than its rotation timescale. This confirms that rotating toroids such as the G31 Main core are non-equilibrium, transient collapsing structures that need to be constantly replenished with fresh material from a large-scale reservoir. For sources B, C, and D, the infall could be accelerating inside the sources, while for source A, the presence of a second emission component complicates the interpretation. Scaling of quantum computers to fault-tolerant levels relies critically on the integration of energy-efficient, stable, and reproducible qubit control and readout electronics. In comparison to traditional semiconductor control electronics (TSCE) located at room temperature, the signals generated by Josephson junction (JJ) based rf sources benefit from small device sizes, low power dissipation, intrinsic calibration, superior reproducibility, and insensitivity to ambient fluctuations. Previous experiments to co-locate qubits and JJ-based control electronics resulted in quasiparticle poisoning of the qubit; degrading the qubit's coherence and lifetime. In this paper, we digitally control a 0.01~K transmon qubit with pulses from a Josephson pulse generator (JPG) located at the 3~K stage of a dilution refrigerator. We directly compare the qubit lifetime $T_1$, coherence time $T_2^*$, and thermal occupation $P_{th}$ when the qubit is controlled by the JPG circuit versus the TSCE setup. We find agreement to within the daily fluctuations on $\pm 0.5~\mu$s and $\pm 2~\mu$s for $T_1$ and $T_2^*$, respectively, and agreement to within the 1\% error for $P_{th}$. Additionally, we perform randomized benchmarking to measure an average JPG gate error of $2.1 \times 10^{-2}$. In combination with a small device size ($<25$~mm$^2$) and low on-chip power dissipation ($\ll 100~\mu$W), these results are an important step towards demonstrating the viability of using JJ-based control electronics located at temperature stages higher than the mixing chamber stage in highly-scaled superconducting quantum information systems., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures. We studied theoretically the cis-trans isomerization reactions of two astrophysically relevant acids, formic acid (HCOOH) and thioformic acid (HC(O)SH), where the latter has recently been discovered in space. We also searched for these molecules towards the hot core G31.41+0.31 to compare their abundances with the expected theoretical isomerization results. Our results demonstrate that these isomerizations are viable in the conditions of the ISM due to ground-state tunneling effects, which allow the system to reach the thermodynamic equilibrium at moderately low temperatures. At very low temperatures (Tkin 10 K), the reaction rate constants for the cis to trans isomerizations are very small, which implies that the cis isomers should not be formed under cold ISM conditions. This is in disagreement with observations of the cis/trans isomers of HCOOH in cold cores where the cis isomer is found to be 5-6% the trans isomer. At high temperatures (150-300 K), our theoretical data not only match the observed behaviour of the trans/cis abundance ratios for HCOOH (the cis form is undetected), but they support our tentative detection of the trans and, for the first time in the insterstellar medium, of the cis isomer of HC(O)SH towards the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 (with a measured trans/cis abundance ratio of 3.7). While the trans/cis ratio for HC(O)SH in the ISM depends on the relative stability of the isomers, the trans/cis ratio for HCOOH cannot be explained by isomerization, and it is determined by other competitive chemical processes, Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

We aim to characterize the physical and chemical properties of fragmented cores during the earliest evolutionary stages in the very young star-forming regions ISOSS J22478+6357 and ISOSS J23053+5953. NOEMA 1.3 mm data are used in combination with archival mid- and far-infrared observations to construct and fit the SEDs of individual fragmented cores. The radial density profiles are inferred from the 1.3 mm continuum visibility profiles and the radial temperature profiles are estimated from H2CO rotation temperature maps. Molecular column densities are derived with the line fitting tool XCLASS. The physical and chemical properties are combined by applying the physical-chemical model MUSCLE in order to constrain the chemical timescales of a few line-rich cores. The morphology and spatial correlations of the molecular emission are analyzed using the HOG method. The mid-infrared data show that both regions contain a cluster of young stellar objects. Bipolar molecular outflows are observed in the CO 2-1 transition toward the strong mm cores indicating protostellar activity. We find strong molecular emission of SO, SiO, H2CO, and CH3OH in locations which are not associated with the mm cores. These shocked knots can be either associated with the bipolar outflows or, in the case of ISOSS J23053+5953, with a colliding flow that creates a large shocked region between the mm cores. The mean chemical timescale of the cores is lower (20 000 yr) compared to that of the sources of the more evolved CORE sample (60 000 yr). With the HOG method, we find that the spatial emission of species tracing the extended emission and of shock-tracing molecules are well correlated within transitions of these groups., Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Increasing evidence suggests that, similar to their low-mass counterparts, high-mass stars form through a disk-mediated accretion process. At the same time, formation of high-mass stars still necessitates high accretion rates, and hence, high gas densities, which in turn can cause disks to become unstable against gravitational fragmentation. We study the kinematics and fragmentation of the disk around the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591-VLA 3 which was hypothesized to be fragmenting based on the observations that show multiple outflow directions. We use a new set of high-resolution (0.19 arcsec) IRAM/NOEMA observations at 843 micron towards VLA 3 which allow us to resolve its disk, characterize the fragmentation, and study its kinematics. In addition to the 843 micron continuum emission, our spectral setup targets warm dense gas and outflow tracers such as HCN, HC$_3$N and SO$_2$, as well as vibrationally excited HCN lines. The high resolution continuum and line emission maps reveal multiple fragments with subsolar masses within the inner 1000 AU of VLA 3. Furthermore, the velocity field of the inner disk observed at 843 micron shows a similar behavior to that of the larger scale velocity field studied in the CORE project at 1.37 mm. We present the first observational evidence for disk fragmentation towards AFGL 2591-VLA 3, a source that was thought to be a single high-mass core. While the fragments themselves are low-mass, the rotation of the disk is dominated by the protostar with a mass of 10.3$\pm 1.8~M_{\odot}$. New-generation spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way plane have been revealing the structure of the interstellar medium, allowing the simultaneous study of dense structures from single star-forming objects or systems to entire spiral arms. We present the catalogue of molecular clouds extracted from the $^{13}$CO(1-0) data cubes of the Forgotten Quadrant Survey, which mapped the Galactic plane in the range 220\deg

Peptide-like bond molecules, which can take part to the formation of proteins in a primitive Earth environment, have been detected up to now only towards a few sources. We present a study of HNCO, HC(O)NH$_{2}$, CH$_{3}$NCO, CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$, CH$_{3}$NHCHO, CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$NCO, NH$_{2}$C(O)NH$_{2}$, NH$_{2}$C(O)CN, and HOCH$_{2}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ towards the hot core G31.41+0.31. We have used the spectrum obtained from the ALMA 3mm spectral survey GUAPOS, with an angular resolution of 1.2"$\times$1.2" ($\sim$4500 au), to derive column densities of all the molecular species, together with other 0.2"$\times$0.2" ($\sim$750 au) ALMA observations to study the morphology of HNCO, HC(O)NH$_{2}$ and CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$. We have detected HNCO, HC(O)NH$_{2}$, CH$_{3}$NCO, CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$, and CH$_{3}$NHCHO, for the first time all together outside the Galactic center. We have obtained molecular fractional abundances with respect to H$_{2}$ from 10$^{-7}$ down to a few 10$^{-9}$ and with respect to CH$_{3}$OH from 10$^{-3}$ to $\sim$4$\times$10$^{-2}$. From the comparison with other sources, we find that regions in an earlier stage of evolution, such as pre-stellar cores, show abundances at least two orders of magnitude lower than those in hot cores, hot corinos or shocked regions. Moreover, molecular abundance ratios towards different sources are found to be consistent between them within $\sim$1 order of magnitude, regardless of the physical properties (e.g. different masses and luminosities), or the source position throughout the Galaxy. New correlations between pairs of molecular abundances have also been found. These results suggest that all these species are formed on grain surfaces in early evolutionary stages of molecular clouds, and that they are subsequently released back to the gas-phase through thermal desorption or shock-triggered desorption., Comment: 51 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables, 5 appendix - Accepted for publication in A&A

The TOPG\"ot project studies a sample of 86 high-mass star-forming regions in different evolutionary stages from starless cores to ultra compact HII regions. The aim of the survey is to analyze different molecular species in a statistically significant sample to study the chemical evolution in high-mass star-forming regions, and identify chemical tracers of the different phases. The sources have been observed with the IRAM 30m telescope in different spectral windows at 1, 2, and 3 mm. In this first paper, we present the sample and analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the TOPG\"ot sources to derive physical parameters. We use the MADCUBA software to analyze the emission of methyl cyanide (CH$_3$CN), a well-known tracer of high-mass star formation. The emission of the $\rm{CH_3CN(5_{K}-4_{K})}$ K-transitions has been detected towards 73 sources (85% of the sample), with 12 non-detections and one source not observed in the frequency range of $\rm{CH_3CN(5_{K}-4_{K})}$. The emission of CH$_3$CN has been detected towards all evolutionary stages, with the mean abundances showing a clear increase of an order of magnitude from high-mass starless-cores to later evolutionary stages. We found a conservative abundance upper limit for high-mass starless cores of $X_{\rm CH_3CN}<4.0\times10^{-11}$, and a range in abundance of $4.0\times10^{-11}

In this work we study and analyze a class of Duhem hysteresis operators that can exhibit butterfly loops. We study firstly the consistency property of such operator which corresponds to the existence of an attractive periodic solution when the operator is subject to a periodic input signal. Subsequently, we study the two defining functions of the Duhem operator such that the corresponding periodic solutions can admit a butterfly input-output phase plot. We present a number of examples where the Duhem butterfly hysteresis operators are constructed using two zero-level set curves that satisfy some mild conditions.

Context: The formation of high-mass star-forming regions from their parental gas cloud and the subsequent fragmentation processes lie at the heart of star formation research. Aims: We aim to study the dynamical and fragmentation properties at very early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Methods: Employing the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and the IRAM 30m telescope, we observed two young high-mass star-forming regions, ISOSS22478 and ISOSS23053, in the 1.3mm continuum and spectral line emission at a high angular resolution (~0.8''). Results: We resolved 29 cores that are mostly located along filament-like structures. Depending on the temperature assumption, these cores follow a mass-size relation of approximately M~r^2.0, corresponding to constant mean column densities. However, with different temperature assumptions, a steeper mass-size relation up to M~r^3.0, which would be more likely to correspond to constant mean volume densities, cannot be ruled out. The correlation of the core masses with their nearest neighbor separations is consistent with thermal Jeans fragmentation. We found hardly any core separations at the spatial resolution limit, indicating that the data resolve the large-scale fragmentation well. Although the kinematics of the two regions appear very different at first sight - multiple velocity components along filaments in ISOSS22478 versus a steep velocity gradient of more than 50km/s/pc in ISOSS23053 - the findings can be explained within the framework of a dynamical cloud collapse scenario. Conclusions: While our data are consistent with a dynamical cloud collapse scenario and subsequent thermal Jeans fragmentation, the importance of additional environmental properties, such as the magnetization of the gas or external shocks triggering converging gas flows, is nonetheless not as well constrained and would require future investigation., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, accepted for Astronomy and Astrophysics, a higher-resolution version can also be found at https://www.mpia.de/homes/beuther/papers.html

Context. ALMA observations at 1.4 mm and 0.2'' (750au) angular resolution of the Main core in the high-mass star forming region G31.41+0.31 have revealed a puzzling scenario: on the one hand, the continuum emission looks very homogeneous and the core appears to undergo solid-body rotation, suggesting a monolithic core stabilized by the magnetic field; on the other hand, rotation and infall speed up toward the core center, where two massive embedded free-free continuum sources have been detected, pointing to an unstable core having undergone fragmentation. Aims. To establish whether the Main core is indeed monolithic or its homogeneous appearance is due to a combination of large dust opacity and low angular resolution, we carried out millimeter observations at higher angular resolution and different wavelengths. Methods. We carried out ALMA observations at 1.4 mm and 3.5 mm that achieved angular resolutions of 0.1''(375 au) and 0.075'' (280 au), respectively. VLA observations at 7 mm and 1.3 cm at even higher angular resolution, 0.05'' (190 au) and 0.07'' (260 au), respectively, were also carried out to better study the nature of the free-free continuum sources detected in the core. Results. The millimeter continuum emission of the Main core has been clearly resolved into at least four sources, A, B, C, and D, within 1'', indicating that the core is not monolithic. The deconvolved radii of the dust emission of the sources, estimated at 3.5 mm, are 400-500au, their masses range from 15 to 26 Msun, and their number densities are several 1E9 cm-3. Sources A and B, located closer to the center of the core and separated by 750 au, are clearly associated with two free-free continuum sources, likely thermal radio jets, and are the brightest in the core. We use sub-arcsecond resolution ($\sim$0.4$''$) observations with NOEMA at 1.37 mm to study the dust emission and molecular gas of 18 high-mass star-forming regions. We combine the derived physical and chemical properties of individual cores in these regions to estimate their ages. The temperature structure of these regions are determined by fitting H2CO and CH3CN line emission. The density profiles are inferred from the 1.37 mm continuum visibilities. The column densities of 11 different species are determined by fitting the emission lines with XCLASS. Within the 18 observed regions, we identify 22 individual cores with associated 1.37 mm continuum emission and with a radially decreasing temperature profile. We find an average temperature power-law index of q = 0.4$\pm$0.1 and an average density power-law index of p = 2.0$\pm$0.2 on scales on the order of several 1 000 au. Comparing these results with values of p derived in the literature suggest that the density profiles remain unchanged from clump to core scales. The column densities relative to N(C18O) between pairs of dense gas tracers show tight correlations. We apply the physical-chemical model MUSCLE to the derived column densities of each core and find a mean chemical age of $\sim$60 000 yrs and an age spread of 20 000-100 000 yrs. With this paper we release all data products of the CORE project available at https://www.mpia.de/core. The CORE sample reveals well constrained density and temperature power-law distributions. Furthermore, we characterize a large variety in molecular richness that can be explained by an age spread confirmed by our physical-chemical modeling. The hot molecular cores show the most emission lines, but we also find evolved cores at an evolutionary stage, in which most molecules are destroyed and thus the spectra appear line-poor again., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In the massive star-forming region IRAS 21078+5211, a highly fragmented cluster (0.1~pc in size) of molecular cores is observed, located at the density peak of an elongated (1~pc in size) molecular cloud. A small (1~km/s per 0.1~pc) LSR velocity (Vlsr) gradient is detected across the axis of the molecular cloud. Assuming we are observing a mass flow from the harboring cloud to the cluster, we derive a mass infall rate of about 10^{-4}~M_{sun}~yr^{-1}. The most massive cores (labeled 1, 2, and 3) are found at the center of the cluster, and these are the only ones that present a signature of protostellar activity in terms of emission from high-excitation molecular lines or a molecular outflow. We reveal an extended (size about 0.1~pc), bipolar collimated molecular outflow emerging from core 1. We believe this is powered by a (previously discovered) compact (size <= 1000~au) radio jet, ejected by a YSO embedded in core 1 (named YSO-1), since the molecular outflow and the radio jet are almost parallel and have a comparable momentum rate. By means of high-excitation lines, we find a large (14~km/s over 500~au) Vlsr gradient at the position of YSO-1, oriented approximately perpendicular to the radio jet. Assuming this is an edge-on, rotating disk and fitting a Keplerian rotation pattern, we determine the YSO-1 mass to be 5.6+/-2.0~M_{sun}. The water masers (previously observed with VLBI) emerge within 100-300~au from YSO-1 and are unique tracers of the jet kinematics. Their three-dimensional (3D) velocity pattern reveals that the gas flows along, and rotates about, the jet axis. We show that the 3D maser velocities are fully consistent with the magneto-centrifugal disk-wind models predicting a cylindrical rotating jet. Under this hypothesis, we determine the jet radius to be about 16~au and the corresponding launching radius and terminal velocity to be about 2.2~au and 200~km/s, respectively., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

While it is widely used to represent hysteresis phenomena with unidirectional-oriented loops, we study in this paper the use of Preisach operator for describing hysteresis behavior with multidirectional-oriented loops. This complex hysteresis behavior is commonly found in advanced materials, such as, shape-memory alloys or piezoelectric materials, that are used for high-precision sensor and actuator systems. We provide characterization of the Preisach operators exhibiting such input-output behaviors and we show the richness of the operators that are capable of producing intricate loops.

The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. By combining two surveys covering a large fraction of the molecular material in the Galactic disk we investigate the role the spiral arms play in the star formation process. We have matched clumps identified by ATLASGAL with their parental GMCs as identified by SEDIGISM, and use these giant molecular cloud (GMC) masses, the bolometric luminosities, and integrated clump masses obtained in a concurrent paper to estimate the dense gas fractions (DGF$_{\rm gmc}=\sum M_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$) and the instantaneous star forming efficiencies (i.e., SFE$_{\rm gmc} = \sum L_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$). We find that the molecular material associated with ATLASGAL clumps is concentrated in the spiral arms ($\sim$60% found within $\pm$10 km s$^{-1}$ of an arm). We have searched for variations in the values of these physical parameters with respect to their proximity to the spiral arms, but find no evidence for any enhancement that might be attributable to the spiral arms. The combined results from a number of similar studies based on different surveys indicate that, while spiral-arm location plays a role in cloud formation and HI to H$_2$ conversion, the subsequent star formation processes appear to depend more on local environment effects. This leads us to conclude that the enhanced star formation activity seen towards the spiral arms is the result of source crowding rather than the consequence of a any physical process., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Recent theoretical and observational studies debate the similarities between the formation process of high-mass (>8 Msun) and low-mass stars. The formation of low-mass star formation is directly associated with the presence of disks and jets. According to this scenario, radio jets are expected to be common in high-mass star-forming regions. We aim to increase the number of known radio jets in high-mass star forming regions by searching for radio jet candidates at radio continuum wavelengths. We have used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to observe 18 high-mass star-forming regions in the C band (6 cm, ~1.0 arcsec resolution) and K band (1.3 cm, ~0.3 arcsec resolution). We have searched for radio jet candidates by studying the association of radio continuum sources with shock activity signposts. We have identified 7 as the most probable radio jets. The radio luminosity of the radio jet candidates is correlated with the bolometric luminosity and the outflow momentum rate. About 7-36% of the radio jet candidates are associated with non-thermal emission. The radio jet candidates associated with 6.7 GHz CH3OH maser emission are preferentially thermal winds and jets, while a considerable fraction of radio jet candidates associated with H2O masers show non-thermal emission, likely due to strong shocks. Our sample of 18 regions is divided in 8 less evolved, infrared-dark regions and 10 more evolved, infrared-bright regions. We have found that ~71% of the identified radio jet candidates are located in the more evolved regions. Similarly, 25% of the less evolved regions harbor one of the most probable radio jets, while up to 50% of the more evolved regions contain one of these radio jet candidates. Understanding the degree of chemical complexity that can be reached in star-forming regions, together with the identification of precursors of the building blocks of life in the interstellar medium, is one of the goals of astrochemistry. Unbiased spectral surveys with large bandwidth and high spectral resolution are thus needed, to resolve line blending in chemically rich sources and identify complex organic molecules. This kind of observations has been successfully carried out, mainly towards the Galactic Center, a region that shows peculiar environmental conditions. We present an unbiased spectral survey at 3mm of one of the most chemically rich hot molecular cores located outside the Galactic Center, in the high-mass star-forming region G31.41+0.31. In this first paper, we present the survey and discuss the detection of the 3 isomers of C$_{2}$H$_{4}$O$_{2}$: methyl formate, glycolaldehyde and acetic acid. Observations were carried out with ALMA and cover the entire Band 3 from 84 to 116 GHz with an angular resolution of $1.2^{''}$x$1.2^{''}$ and a spectral resolution of $\sim0.488$ MHz. The transitions of the 3 molecules have been analyzed with the software XCLASS. All three isomers were detected and methyl formate and acetic acid abundances in G31 are the highest detected up to now, if compared to sources in literature. The size of the emission varies among the three isomers with acetic acid showing the most compact emission while methyl formate the most extended. The comparison with chemical models suggests the necessity of grain-surface routes for the formation of methyl formate in G31, while for glycolaldehyde both scenarios could be feasible. Proposed grain-surface reaction for acetic acid is not able to reproduce the observed abundance in this work, while gas-phase scenario should be further tested due to large uncertainties., Comment: 49 pages, 29 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the conceptual design and initial development of the Hysteretic Deformable Mirror (HDM). The HDM is a completely new approach to the design and operation of deformable mirrors for wavefront correction in advanced imaging systems. The key technology breakthrough is the application of highly hysteretic piezoelectric material in combination with a simple electrode layout to efficiently define single actuator pixels. The set-and-forget nature of the HDM, which is based on the large remnant deformation of the newly developed piezo material, facilitates the use of time division multiplexing (TDM) to address the single pixels without the need for high update frequencies to avoid pixel drift. This, in combination with the simple electrode layout, paves the way for upscaling to extremely high pixel numbers ($\geq 128\times 128$) and pixel density ($100/mm^2$) deformable mirrors (DMs), which is of great importance for high spatial frequency wavefront correction in some of the most advanced imaging systems in the world.

We study in this paper the control of hysteresis-based actuator systems where its remanence behavior (e.g., the remaining memory when the actuation signal is set to zero) must follow a desired reference point. We present a recursive algorithm for the output regulation of the hysteresis remnant behavior described by Preisach operators. Under some mild conditions, we prove that our proposed algorithm guarantees that the output remnant converges to a desired value. Simulation result shows the efficacy of our proposed algorithm.

We have studied four complex organic molecules (COMs), methyl formate ($CH_3OCHO$), dimethyl ether ($CH_3OCH_3$), formamide ($NH_2CHO$), and ethyl cyanide ($C_2H_5CN$), towards a large sample of 39 high-mass star-forming regions representing different evolutionary stages, from early to evolved phases. We aim to identify potential correlations between the molecules and to trace their evolutionary sequence through the star formation process. We analysed spectra obtained at 3, 2, and 0.9 mm with the IRAM-30m telescope. We derived the main physical parameters for each species by fitting the molecular lines. We compared them and evaluated their evolution, also taking several other interstellar environments into account. We report detections in 20 sources, revealing a clear dust absorption effect on column densities. Derived abundances are ~$10^{-10}-10^{-7}$ for $CH_3OCHO$ and $CH_3OCH_3$, ~$10^{-12}-10^{-10}$ for $NH_2CHO$, and ~$10^{-11}-10^{-9}$ for $C_2H_5CN$. The abundances of $CH_3OCHO$, $CH_3OCH_3$, and $C_2H_5CN$ are very strongly correlated (r>0.92) across ~4 orders of magnitude. $CH_3OCHO$ and $CH_3OCH_3$ show the strongest correlations in most parameters, and a nearly constant ratio (~1) over a remarkable ~9 orders of magnitude in luminosity for a wide variety of sources: pre-stellar to evolved cores, low- to high-mass objects, shocks, Galactic clouds, and comets. This indicates that COMs chemistry is likely early developed and then preserved through evolved phases. Moreover, the molecular abundances clearly increase with evolution. We consider $CH_3OCHO$ and $CH_3OCH_3$ to be most likely chemically linked: they could e.g. share a common precursor, or be formed one from the other. We present modeling and analysis of a hysteretic deformable mirror where the facesheet interacts with a continuous layer of piezoelectric material that can be actuated distributively by a matrix of electrodes through multiplexing. Moreover, a method for calculating the actuator influence functions is described considering the particular arrangement of electrodes. The results are presented in a semi-analytical model to describe the facesheet's deformation caused by a high density array of actuators, and validated in a simulation. The proposed modeling of an interconnection layout of electrodes is used to determine the optimal pressures the actuators have to exert for achieving a desired surface deformation.

ALMA has been operating since 2011, but has not yet been populated with the full suite of intended frequency bands. In particular, ALMA Band 2 (67-90 GHz) is the final band in the original ALMA band definition to be approved for production. We aim to produce a wideband, tuneable, sideband-separating receiver with 28 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth per polarisation operating in the sky frequency range 67-116 GHz. Our design anticipates new ALMA requirements following the recommendations in the 2030 ALMA Development Roadmap. The cryogenic cartridge is designed to be compatible with the ALMA Band 2 cartridge slot, where the coldest components -- the feedhorns, orthomode transducers, and cryogenic low noise amplifiers -- operate at a temperature of 15 K. We use multiple simulation methods and tools to optimise our designs for both the passive optics and the active components. The cryogenic cartridge interfaces with a room temperature cartridge hosting the local oscillator (LO) and the downconverter module. This warm cartridge is largely based on GaAs semiconductor technology and is optimised to match the cryogenic receiver bandwidth with the required instantaneous LO tuning range. Our collaboration has designed, fabricated, and tested multiple technical solutions for each of the components, producing a state-of-the-art receiver covering the full ALMA Band 2 & 3 atmospheric window. The receiver is suitable for deployment on ALMA in the coming years, and is capable of dual-polarisation, sideband-separating observations in intermediate frequency bands spanning 4-18 GHz, for a total of 28 GHz on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel. We conclude that the 67-116 GHz wideband implementation for ALMA Band 2 is now feasible, and this receiver is a compelling instrumental upgrade that will enhance observational capabilities and scientific reach., Comment: 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A on 20 Dec 2019. The recent data collected by {\it Herschel} have confirmed that interstellar structures with filamentary shape are ubiquitously present in the Milky Way. Filaments are thought to be formed by several physical mechanisms acting from the large Galactic scales down to the sub-pc fractions of molecular clouds, and they might represent a possible link between star formation and the large-scale structure of the Galaxy. In order to study this potential link, a statistically significant sample of filaments spread throughout the Galaxy is required. In this work we present the first catalogue of $32,059$ candidate filaments automatically identified in the Hi-GAL survey of the entire Galactic Plane. For these objects we determined morphological (length, $l^{a}$, and geometrical shape) and physical (average column density, $N_{\rm H_{2}}$, and average temperature, $T$) properties. We identified filaments with a wide range of properties: 2$'$\,$\leq l^{a}\leq$\, 100$'$, $10^{20} \leq N_{\rm H_{2}} \leq 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and $10 \leq T\leq$ 35\,K. We discuss their association with the Hi-GAL compact sources, finding that the most tenuous (and stable) structures do not host any major condensation and we also assign a distance to $\sim 18,400$ filaments for which we determine mass, physical size, stability conditions and Galactic distribution. When compared to the spiral arms structure, we find no significant difference between the physical properties of on-arm and inter-arm filaments. We compared our sample with previous studies, finding that our Hi-GAL filament catalogue represents a significant extension in terms of Galactic coverage and sensitivity.
