The present work reports indoor Radon-222 activity concentration measurements, external gamma dose rate measurements, and assessment of cancer risk in the different dwellings in Ebolowa town, southern Cameroon. The geological formations of this studied area are mainly granites. This studied area extends over the equatorial climatic zone. The mean temperature of the zone varies from 25°C to 26°C with two rainy and two dry seasons with a relative humidity of (70–80) % recorded throughout the year. The indoor radon activity concentrations were carried out using RADTRACK2 devices, which are the alpha track detectors made of CR-39 plastic films contained in an antistatic black holder. Each device was hung in an inhabited room of each selected dwelling for an average period of three months. Radon concentrations in dwellings ranged between (23 ± 10) Bq m–3 and (2620 ± 480) Bq m–3 with an arithmetic mean of 135.6 Bq m–3 and a geometric mean of 63 Bq m–3. The estimated annual effective doses due to external gamma exposure ranged from (0.15 ± 0.01) mSv y−1 to (0.38 ± 0.06) mSv y−1 with an average value of 0.26 mSv y−1. The estimated annual effective dose due to indoor radon ranged between 0.43 mSv y−1 and 49.6 mSv y−1 with an arithmetic mean of 2.6 mSv y−1. This value was below the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommended action level. The Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) ranged from 1.39% to 158% with a mean value of 8.2%. Background: The purpose was to evaluate the incidence of acute and late rectal toxicities and their correlation with the clinical and dosimetric parameters of patients who underwent curative radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer at the Akanda Cancer Institute, Gabon. Materials and methods: Between 2013 and 2021, a cohort of 46 patients with clinically localized stage cT1c-T4 prostate cancer was treated with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) at the national cancer institute with doses ranging from 66 to 80 Gy. Post-radiation gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities were classified and graded according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events CTCAE v4.0. Results: In our study, 17.4% (8/46) developed acute GI. Grades 1 and 3 acute GI complications were seen in 13.0% (6/46) and 4.3% (2/46), respectively. No patient developed acute grade 2 or grade higher than 3 complications. Late GI side effects were limited. The median time to the development of late GI Grade = 1 toxicities was 12 months (range: 9-19 months). 10.9% (5/46) had experience late GI. Among them, grade 1 and 2 were seen in 6.5% (3/46), and 4.3% (2/46), respectively. There was no grade 3 or higher complications. Statistically, we did not find any correlation between the presence of rectal toxicity and clinical factors or the presence of comorbidity. On the dosimetric level, the Mann-Whitney statistical test found a correlation between the presence of late GI toxicity and rectal volume irradiated at the prescribed dose (p = 0.02). This study presents a new approach to solve the one-dimensional solute transport equation with variable coefficients and two input sources in a finite porous media. The medium is divided into m-layers porous media with constant averages coefficients in each transport problem. The transport equations in layer i-1 and i are coupled by imposing the continuity of solute concentration and the dispersive flux at the interfaces of the layers. Unknown functions representing the dispersive flux at the interfaces between adjacent layers are introduced allowing the multilayer problem to be solved separately on each layer in the Laplace domain before being numerical inverted back to the time domain. The obtained solution was compared with the Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) and numerical solutions for some problems of solute transport with variables coefficients in porous medium present in the literature. The results show a good agreement between both solutions for each of the studied problem. An example of application considering an advective-dispersive transport problem with a sinusoidal time-dependent emitting rate at the boundary was study in order to illustrate the effect of sinusoidal frequency on solute concentration. The present work was aimed at measuring indoor radon activity concentrations in dwellings in Mvangan locality, South Cameroon, in order to assess the extent of measures that may be necessary for controlling public indoor radon exposure in this area. Measurements were carried out using passive solid-state nuclear track detectors (RADONAVA Inc. RadTrak2, Sweden) following ISO 11665-4 standard. Radon concentration ranged between 36 ± 20 and 150 ± 30 Bq m−3 with arithmetic and geometric means values of 64 ± 25 and 60 ± 1 Bq m−3, respectively. These mean values were greater than worldwide values presented by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), which are, respectively, 40 and 30 Bq m−3. 96% of dwellings that have radon concentrations below the World Health Organization (WHO) reference level of 100 Bq m−3, whereas 4% of dwellings have radon concentrations higher than this level but lower than 300 Bq m−3, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reference level. Annual effective doses due to indoor radon ranged between 0.7 and 2.8 mSv y−1 with an arithmetic mean value of 1.2 ± 0.5 mSv y−1. These values were below the lower limit of the ICRP-recommended action level interval 3–10 mSv y−1. It has been observed that annual effective dose received by residents in cement bricks dwellings were not significantly different (P -value = 0.565) than those received by residents in mud dwellings in Mvangan locality. The mean number of persons expected to be diagnosed with or die from cancer (solid cancers and leukemia) were 162 ± 48 (61 ± 25 for males and 101 ± 41 for females) and 82 ± 24 (33 ± 13 for males and 49 ± 20 for females), respectively. The results obtained in this study prove that the populations of Mvangan locality are exposed to a relatively low potential risk of cancer incidence and mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study derives an analytical solution of a one-dimensional (1-D) Advection-Dispersion Equation (ADE) for solute transport with two contaminant sources incorporating the source term. Groundwater velocity is considered as a linear function of space while the dispersion as a nth power of velocity and analytical solutions are obtained for n = 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. The solution is derived using the Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) with a new regular Sturm-Liouville Problem (SLP). Analytical solutions are compared with numerical solutions obtained in MATLAB pedpe solver and are found to be in good agreement. The obtained solutions are illustrated for linear combination of exponential input distribution and its particular cases. The dispersion coefficient and temporal variation of the source term on the solute distribution are demonstrated graphically for the set of input data based on similar data available in the literature. As an illustration, model predictions are used to estimate the time histories of the radiological doses of uranium at different distances from the sources boundary in order to understand the potential radiological impact on the general public for such problem.
