10. Deep plumbing model of the Cenozoic Manzaz / Atakor intraplate volcanic system, Central Hoggar, Northwest Africa, based on electrical resistivity models

Abstract

Continental intraplate volcanic systems, with their location far from plate tectonic boundaries, are not well understood: the crustal and lithospheric mantle structure of these systems remain enigmatic and there is no consensus on the mechanisms that cause melt generation and ascent. The Cenozoic saw the development of numerous volcanic provinces on the African plate. This includes the Hoggar volcanic province, located in Northwest Africa, part of the Tuareg shield. It is composed of several massifs with contrasting ages and eruptive styles. The magmatic activity began at around 34 Ma and continued throughout the Neogene-Quaternary. Phonolite and trachyte domes as well as scoria cones and necks are found in the Manzaz and Atakor volcanic districts. In order to image the crustal and lithospheric mantle structure of this region, and to understand the origins and potential mechanisms of the continental intraplate volcanic activity in the Central Hoggar and specifically the Atakor/Manzaz area, we acquired magnetotelluric (MT) measurements from 40 locations and generated a 3-D electrical resistivity model. The model covers an area of about 100 km by 200 km. Images of the subsurface architecture, in terms of electrical resistivity, from the near-surface to the lithospheric mantle, allow us image the deep plumbing system of the volcanic system. Low resistivity features (i.e., conductors) in the crust that are narrow, linear structures trending approximately north-south, are revealed along the two boundaries of the Azrou N’Fad terrane, in the Manzaz area. They likely reflect the Pan-African mega-shear zones, which were reactivated throughout the tectonic evolution of the region. The model reveals that these faults are lithospheric-scale. In addition, the low-resistivity features likely represent the signatures of past fluid flow. 23. Pressure-temperature conditions and significance of Upper Devonian eclogite and amphibolite facies metamorphisms in southern French Massif central

Abstract

The southwestern French Massif central in western Rouergue displays an inverted metamorphic sequence with eclogite and amphibolite facies units forming the top of the nappe stack. They are often grouped into the leptyno-amphibolite complex included, in this area, at the base of the Upper Gneiss Unit. We sampled garnet micaschists and amphibolites to investigate their metamorphic history with isochemical phase diagrams, thermobarometry and U-Pb zircon dating. Our results demonstrate that two different tectono-metamorphic units can be distinguished. The Najac unit consists of biotite-poor phengite-garnet micaschists, a basic-ultrabasic intrusion containing retrogressed eclogites and phengite orthogneisses. Pressure and temperature estimates on micaschists with syn-kinematic garnets yield a prograde with garnet growth starting at 380 °C/6–7 kbar, peak pressure at 16 kbar for 570 °C, followed by retrogression in the greenschist facies. The age of high pressure metamorphism has been constrained in a recent publication between ca. 383 and 369 Ma. The Laguépie unit comprises garnet-free and garnet-bearing amphibolites with isolated lenses, veins or dykes of leucotonalitic gneiss. Thermobarometry and phase diagram calculation on a garnet amphibolite yield suprasolidus peak P-T conditions at 710 °C, 10 kbar followed by retrogression and deformation under greenschist and amphibolite facies conditions. New U-Pb analyses obtained on igneous zircon rims from a leucotonalitic gneiss yield an age of 363 ± 3 Ma, interpreted as the timing of zircon crystallization after incipient partial melting of the host amphibolite. The eclogitic Najac unit records the subduction of a continental margin during Upper Devonian. It is tentatively correlated to a Middle Allochthon, sandwiched between the Lower Gneiss Unit and the Upper Gneiss Unit. Such an intermediate unit is still poorly defined in the French Massif central but it can be a lateral equivalent of the Groix blueschists in the south Armorican massif. The Uppermost Devonian, amphibolite facies Laguépie unit correlates in terms of P-T-t evolution to the Upper Gneiss Unit in the Western French Massif central. This Late Devonian metamorphism is contemporaneous with active margin magmatism and confirms that the French Massif central belonged to the continental upper plate of an ocean-continent subduction system just before the stacking of Mississippian nappes.

Abstract

The Aleksod terrane Eclogites, sited in the Central Hoggar, preserve a selection of eclogite-facies assemblage (coarse garnet, omphacite, quartz, clinozoisite and amphibole). During retrogression, these minerals were partially substituted with coronas and symplectites of diopside-plagioclase and amphibole-plagioclase. The almandine-dominated garnet proves to enclose heterogeneous compositions (XAlm0.30–0.56). The omphacite displays a high XJd of 0.31. The eclogite-facies coarse amphibole is magnesio-hornblende with NaM4 = 0.31–0.47. The plagioclase is usually secondary exhibiting a range of composition from oligoclase to anorthite (XAn = 0.20–0.99), where albite-rich and anorthite-rich compositions prove to correspond, respectively, to symplectite after omphacite and coronas around epidote. The relevant P-T pseudosections using THERMOCALC-340 are calculated to estimate peak conditions and trace the P-T evolution. At H2O-saturated conditions, inclusions of amphibole in garnet core with garnet composition from core to inner rim are used to trace pre-peak P-T path from 14 kbar–610 °C to 18 kbar–700 °C. At H2O-undersaturated conditions, the retrograde path has been traced using secondary phases as plagioclase, diopside and amphibole at 10 kbar–720 °C.

International audience; Aujourd'hui, avec le développement ininterrompu des moyens de communication et la croissance exponentielle de la masse d'informations, la veille s'avère un outil indispensable pour soutenir toute organisation dans ses prises de décision. Nous présentons, dans ce travail, une application de veille dédiée au domaine du géopatrimoine. Nous proposons un outil de veille destiné à la collecte et la recherche des documents et de photographies portant sur les sites géologiques algériens. Le premier objectif de ce projet est d'assister les géoscientifiques et les autorités locales dans la conservation et la promotion du géopatrimoine. Le deuxième objectif consiste à déterminer l'évolution des sites géologiques dans le temps, et cela en triant les différentes photographies récupérées. Pour ce faire, nous faisons recours à l'un des domaines émergents de la gestion des connaissances qui est le ' games with a purpose', Il s'agit d'une forme particulière de jeux faisant appel aux compétences humaines pour réaliser une tâche sérieuse.
