This paper explores how children's rights are operationalised in practice, specifically by Canadian child and youth advocate offices (all 12 offices across Canada), international children's commissioners' offices (in Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Norway and Denmark), and their institutional structures. A total of 24 participants took part in the study, including 12 current child and youth advocates from the Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates (CCCYA), two former advocates from the CCCYA, three additional staff members of the CCCYA (collectively, representing all 12 jurisdictions across Canada), one children's commissioner and six designates on behalf of various international children's commissioners. This paper shifts the research focus of children's rights and childhood studies from the narrow confines of the individual child to a focus on the broader relational and interdependent aspects inherent within institutions that protect and promote children's rights. In this paper we situate the act of listening in the context of children's rights whilst highlighting the benefits of this practice on the psychological and neurological development of children. After unpacking the concept of listening and the role it plays in adult-child communication, we share the results of a scoping review where we examined neuroscientific studies pointing to the benefits of listening and what relevance such evidence has for children's rights implementation. As such, this paper shows that when adults listen to children in the context of safe, nurturing, and empathic interactions, children draw tangible benefits to many areas of their development. We conclude proposing enhancing adults' capacity for listening as a strategy to contribute to the fulfillment of the rights of children of all ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine 4,300 advertisements of children who were featured in Today’s Child, a daily newspaper column written by Helen Allen in the Toronto Telegram and Toronto Star (1964–1982) and syndicated across North America. We highlight how stigma and values were attributed to adoptive children featured in these advertisements. Our findings reveal how the advertisements perpetuated and attached stigma to these children and how this stigma had to be compensated for the children to appeal to prospective parents. Compensatory strategies were ultimately required to manage stigma and increase the value of the featured children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is a response to Karl Hanson's call for the emancipation of children's rights studies from the children's rights movement. It explores the emergence of the children's rights movement and children's rights studies and analyzes some of the key childhood discourses that are emphasized by these two different approaches. As a way to understand why Hanson calls for emancipation, and in an attempt to begin to emancipate children's rights studies, the article works to deepen current and future spaces for discussion in the field.
