Abstract

In the last years, one of the fields of artificial intelligence that has been investigated the most is nature-inspired computing. The research done on this specific topic showcases the interest that sparks in researchers and practitioners, who put their focus on this paradigm because of the adaptability and ability of nature-inspired algorithms to reach high-quality outcomes on a wide range of problems. In fact, this kind of methods has been successfully applied to solve real-world problems in heterogeneous fields such as medicine, transportation, industry, or software engineering. Our main objective with this paper is to describe a tool based on nature-inspired computing for solving a specific software engineering problem. The problem faced consists of optimizing Infrastructure as Code deployment configurations. For this reason, the name of the system is IaC Optimizer Platform. A prototypical version of the IOP was described in previous works, in which the functionality of this platform was introduced. With this paper, we take a step forward by describing the final release of the IOP, highlighting its main contribution regarding the current state-of-the-art, and justifying the decisions made on its implementation. Also, we contextualize the IOP within the complete platform in which it is embedded, describing how a user can benefit from its use. Abstract

We consider four-component Dirac operators on domains in the plane. With suitable boundary conditions, these operators describe graphene quantum dots. The most general boundary conditions are defined by a matrix depending on four real parameters. For operators with constant boundary parameters we show that the Hamiltonian is unitary equivalent to two copies of the two-component operator. This allows to extend the known results for this type of operators to the four-component case. As an application, we identify the boundary conditions from the tight-binding model for graphene that give rise to a block-diagonal operator in the continuum limit., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Introduction Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is an ultrarare genetic disease (prevalence of 1 in 20 million people) that causes accelerated aging and premature death at a mean age of 14.6 [...], Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is an extremely rare disease caused by the expression of progerin, an aberrant protein produced by a point mutation in the LMNA gene. HGPS patients show accelerated aging and die prematurely mainly from complications of atherosclerosis such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, or stroke. However, the mechanisms underlying HGPS vascular pathology remain ill-defined. We used single-cell RNA sequencing to characterize the aorta in progerin-expressing [Lmna.sup.G609G/G609G] mice and wild-type controls, with a special focus on endothelial cells (ECs). HGPS ECs showed gene expression changes associated with extracellular matrix alterations, increased leukocyte extravasation, and activation of the yes-associated protein 1/transcriptional activator with PDZ-binding domain (YAP/TAZ) mechanosensing pathway, all validated by different techniques. Atomic force microscopy experiments demonstrated stiffer subendothelial extracellular matrix in progeroid aortae, and ultrasound assessment of live HGPS mice revealed disturbed aortic blood flow, both key inducers of the YAP/TAZ pathway in ECs. YAP/TAZ inhibition with verteporfin reduced leukocyte accumulation in the aortic intimal layer and decreased atherosclerosis burden in progeroid mice. Our findings identify endothelial YAP/TAZ signaling as a key mechanism of HGPS vascular disease and open a new avenue for the development of YAP/TAZ-targeting drugs to ameliorate progerin-induced atherosclerosis.

Abstract

In this paper we obtain a Hadamard type formula for simple eigenvalues and an analog to the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality for a class of nonlocal eigenvalue problems. Such class of equations include among others, the classical nonlocal problems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions. The Hadamard formula is computed allowing domain perturbations given by embeddings of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (possibly with boundary) of finite volume while the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality is shown by rearrangement techniques.

In this manuscript, using a technique introduced by P.~T.~Nam in 2012 and the {\it Coulomb Uncertainty Principle}, we prove new bounds on the excess charge for non relativistic atomic systems, independent of the particle statistics. 17. Equivalence of variational principles to determine the speed of scalar reaction diffusion fronts

Abstract

The determination of the speed of travelling fronts of the scalar reaction diffusion equation has been the subject of much study. Using different approaches seemingly disconnected variational principles have been established. The purpose of this work is to show the connection between them. For monostable reaction terms, we prove that a principle established by Hadeler and Rothe in 1975 and a second one by Benguria and Depassier in 1996 are logically equivalent, that is, either can be derived from the other. Two variational principles, formulated for arbitrary reaction terms, are shown to be related by a suitable change of variables. Finally a variational principle proven for monostable reaction terms is shown to be a formulation of the two previous ones in yet another independent variable.

Abstract

We investigate spectral features of the Dirac operator with infinite mass boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Motivated by spectral geometric inequalities, we prove a non-linear variational formulation to characterize its principal eigenvalue. This characterization turns out to be very robust and allows for a simple proof of a Szeg\"o type inequality as well as a new reformulation of a Faber-Krahn type inequality for this operator. Abstract

Abstract Background Transcriptional profiling of prostate cancer (PC) has unveiled new markers of neoplasia and allowed insights into mechanisms underlying this disease. Genomewide analyses have also identified new chromosomal abnormalities associated with PC. The combination of both classes of data for the same sample cohort might provide better criteria for identifying relevant factors involved in neoplasia. Here we describe transcriptional signatures identifying distinct normal and tumoral prostate tissue compartments, and the inference and demonstration of a new, highly recurrent copy number gain on chromosome 17q25.3. Methods We have applied transcriptional profiling to tumoral and non-tumoral prostate samples with relatively homogeneous epithelial representations as well as pure stromal tissue from peripheral prostate and cultured cell lines, followed by quantitative RT-PCR validations and immunohistochemical analysis. In addition, we have performed in silico colocalization analysis of co-regulated genes and validation by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Results The transcriptomic analysis has allowed us to identify signatures corresponding to non-tumoral luminal and tumoral epithelium, basal epithelial cells, and prostate stromal tissue. In addition, in silico analysis of co-regulated expression of physically linked genes has allowed us to predict the occurrence of a copy number gain at chromosomal region 17q25.3. This computational inference was validated by fluorescent in situ hybridization, which showed gains in this region in over 65% of primary and metastatic tumoral samples. Conclusion Our approach permits to directly link gene copy number variations with transcript co-regulation in association with neoplastic states. Therefore, transcriptomic studies of carefully selected samples can unveil new diagnostic markers and transcriptional signatures highly specific of PC, and lead to the discovery of novel genomic abnormalities that may provide additional insights into the causes and mechanisms of prostate cancer.

This new method combines the standard Rellich--Pohozaev argument with a Hardy type inequality for bounded domains. 29. Interaction Between Two Single Superconducting Vortices Inside A Superconducting Hollow Cylindrical domain

Abstract

Inspired by the seminal, ground-breaking work of Abrikosov in 1957, we developed a new approximation to the interaction between two widely separated superconducting vortices. In contrast with Abrikosov's, we take into account the finite size of the vortices and their internal magnetic profile. We consider the vortices to be embedded within a superconducting, infinitely long hollow cylinder, in order to simplify the symmetry and boundary conditions for the mathematical analysis. We study this system in the context of a magnetic Ginzburg-Landau functional theory, by solving for the magnetic field profile inside each vortex, as well as in the superconducting region, subject to physical boundary conditions inspired by the classical analogue of two mutually inducting coils. Under isothermal conditions, the effective force between these vortices is given by the gradient of the Helmholtz free energy constructed from the Ginzburg-Landau functional. From our results, we explicitly show that, in agreement with well established theoretical arguments and experiments, the interaction between widely separated vortices is repulsive in this context, and their equilibrium positions are constrained by the fluxoid's conservation. Moreover, we find that the equilibrium positions of the vortices centers are stable due to the convexity of the Helmholtz free energy profile. The novelty is the continuity of eigenvalues with respect to domain perturbation via Lebesgue measure. Also, under additional smooth condition on the kernel and domain, we prove differentiability of simple eigenvalues computing their first derivative.

Abstract

We establish two integral variational principles for the spreading speed of the one dimensional reaction diffusion equation with Stefan boundary conditions. The first principle is valid for monostable reaction terms and the second principle is valid for arbitrary reaction terms. These principles allow to obtain several upper and lower bounds for the speed. In particular, we construct a generalized Zeldovich-Frank-Kamenetskii type lower bound for the speed and upper bounds in terms of the speed of the standard reaction diffusion problem. Abstract

We give an iterative method to estimate the disturbance of semi-wavefronts of the equation: $\dot{u}(t,x) = u''(t,x) +u(t,x)(1-u(t-h,x)),$ $x \in \mathbb{R},\ t >0;$ where $h>0.$ As a consequence, we show the exponential stability, with an unbounded weight, of semi-wavefronts with speed $c>2\sqrt{2}$ and $h>0$. Under the same restriction of $c$ and $h$, the uniqueness of semi-wavefronts is obtained.

A special type of Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev (GNS) inequalities in $\mathbb{R}^d$ has played a key role in several proofs of Lieb-Thirring inequalities. Recently, a need for GNS inequalities in convex domains of $\mathbb{R}^d$, in particular for cubes, has arised. The purpose of this manuscript is two-fold. First we prove a GNS inequality for convex domains, with explicit constants which depend on the geometry of the domain. Abstract

We study the large time asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the linear parabolic equation with delay $(*)$: $u_{t}(t,x) = u_{xx}(t,x) - u(t,x) + \int_{\mathbb{R}} k(x-y) \, u (t-h, y)\, dy$, $x \in \R$, $\ t >0$, and $k(x) \in L^1(\R)$. As an application we get estimates on the measure of level sets of non local KPP type equations with delay. For this type of nonlinear equations we prove that, in contrast with the classical case, the solution to the initial value problem with data of compact support may not be persistent.

Abstract

We study the asymptotic speed of traveling fronts of the scalar reaction diffusion for positive reaction terms and with a diffusion coefficient depending nonlinearly on the concentration and on its gradient. We restrict our study to diffusion coefficients of the form $D(u,u_x) = m u^{m-1} u_x^{m(p-2)}$ for which existence and convergence to traveling fronts has been established. We formulate a variational principle for the asymptotic speed of the fronts. Upper and lower bounds for the speed valid for any $m\ge0, p\ge 1$ are constructed. When $m=1, p=2$ the problem reduces to the constant diffusion problem and the bounds correspond to the classic Zeldovich Frank-Kamenetskii lower bound and the Aronson-Weinberger upper bound respectively. In the special case $m(p-1) = 1$ a local lower bound can be constructed which coincides with the aforementioned upper bound. Abstract

We consider the Brezis--Nirenberg problem for the Laplacian with a singular drift for a (geodesic) ball in both $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$, $3 \le n \le 5$. The singular drift we consider derives from a potential which is symmetric around the center of the (geodesic) ball. Here the potential is given by a parameter ($\delta$ say) times the logarithm of the distance to the center of the ball. In both cases we determine the exact region in the parameter space for which positive smooth solutions of this problem exist and the exact region for which there are no solutions. Abstract

We use convex geometry tools, in particular John ellipsoids, to obtain a size estimate for the Szeg\H{o} kernel on the boundary of a class of unbounded convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n.$ Given a polynomial $b:\mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ satisfying a certain growth condition, we consider domains of the type $\Omega_b = \{ z\in\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\,:\, {\rm Im}[z_{n+1}] > b({\rm Re}[z_1],\ldots,{\rm Re}[z_n]) \}.$
