The increased awareness of environmental problems has shifted the attention from synthetic polymer porous materials to natural plant porous materials like bamboo parenchyma tissue to develop functional materials. However, the neglect of the inherent structure and property of plant porous materials leads to insufficient development and utilization of their natural advantages. Here, we investigated the fine structure and mechanisms of bamboo parenchyma tissue, which has multiple high-quality properties like energy-absorbing and toughening, to provide a basis for their wide utilization in porous materials. Results showed that bamboo parenchyma tissue was a foam-like porous material with sufficient strength, high porosity and low density. It was composed of cell walls and four types of three-dimensional polyhedral pores converging in space. The total natural porosity was up to 78.80%. The cell walls exhibited a three-zone strength distribution with an average solid cell wall strength of 75.84 MPa, due to their cocoon-like closed microfibrils patterns, chemical compositions and pits characteristics. The high porosity and weakening of transition zone and cell end wall helped to absorb energy. This study provides ideas for the application of bamboo parenchyma tissue in cushioning energy-absorbing foam materials and porous material templates and for the biomimetic design of environmentally friendly porous materials.

Effects of microwave irradiation on bamboo cell wall structures were studied. Microwave treatment resulted in samples exhibiting smoother surfaces, deformed parenchyma cells, and increased porosity. Microwave treatment altered microfibril orientation through the formation of hydrogen bonds. The peak at 3440 cm-1, assigned to O-H stretching, decreased. Meanwhile, intermolecular and intramolecular bonds were formed, increasing the uniformity of microfibrils. Condensation reactions in surface hydroxyl groups and the formation of intramolecular hydroxyl groups in the amorphous region under microwave irradiation also improved the fiber arrangement uniformity. After treatment, the HCH and HOC bonds were reduced and the ester bonds were broken down. The methoxy and aromatic ring hydroxyl groups were oxidized, as indicated by the increase in the absorption peak at 148 ppm. The hydroxyl groups in the amorphous region near the fiber surface decreased, as did hemicellulose content, but there was an increase in secondary crystalline fibers.

Bamboo plants are fast-growing, quickly produce usable material, and are an abundant resource. Bamboo is an excellent, natural, and renewable material. It has a long history of application in human life, industrial manufacturing, cultural industries, and other fields. The warehousing of bamboo and its finished products is an emerging industry with much potential. A reasonable, stable, and orderly warehouse could be an effective solution for the sustainable management, seasonal harvesting, and raw material stability issues. In addition, the warehouse plays an important role in the processing of raw materials, reserve logistics, keeping a robust and real-time supply for downstream products. This is of great significance for alleviating problems associated with Chinese timber safety and for improving the quality of life. This paper focuses on warehousing experience in grain and coal fields, reviews the common material processing and preservation measures of bamboo, analyzes advantages and developmental prospects of bamboo warehousing, and explores and suggests appropriate storage methods, technical systems, and application models. It is expected to provide technical guidance for construction in the bamboo storage industry, and to supply ideas and suggestions for the modern development of the bamboo industry.

Abstract One of the excellent characteristics of bamboo is the deformation stability. However, the reasons for the good bending stability of bamboo have not been well studied. In this study, we examined the pathways that controls bending deformation in bamboo. A hand-bent phyllostachys iridescens member was chosen to examine continuous density distribution, microfibril angle (MFA) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) along radial direction using SilviScan analysis. Our results show that in bent bamboo, MFA is lower in tension sample and higher in compression sample than neutral sample. There is a strong linear positive correlation between density and MOE, while negative linear correlation between MOE and MFA and no obvious linear correlation between MFA and density. Increased bending was influential in primarily changing the MOE, while also altering the density distribution and MFA. Our results demonstrate variation in density, MOE and MFA distribution along radial direction of tension, neutral and compression samples, which play an important role in maintaining the bending characteristics of bamboo.

Bamboo is widely recognized as an engineering material with great potential. Conventional rectangular bamboo strip lumber has low utilization rate from milling arc-shaped strips flat and variable strength properties from natural bamboo’s hierarchical tissue structure. In this work an energy-efficient hydrothermal compression process to flatten and densify arc-shaped bamboo is presented. Abstract The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of freeze–thaw treatment on bamboo with different initial moisture content (water-saturated, air-dried and oven-dried). Bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) were treated with two freeze treatments and its microstructure, chemical composition, mechanical properties and thermal conductivity were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), mechanical testing machine and thermal conductivity tester, respectively. The results showed that the freeze–thaw treatment had little influence on the microstructure of bamboo, the chemical composition content and the cellulose crystalline structure of bamboo were also not altered. The crystallinity index was found to increase with the increase of initial moisture content. The bending strength and elastic modulus of the treated bamboo increased, the extent of the increase was dependent on the initial moisture content and the freezing temperature. The thermal conductivity of the treated bamboo increased remarkably, which might be possibly determined by the cellulose crystallinity, moisture content, and density of bamboo.

To maintain the life of building materials, it is critical to understand the hygrothermal transfer mechanisms (HTM) between the walls and the layers inside the walls. Due to the extreme instability of weather data, the actual data models of the HTM—the data being collected for actual buildings using modern sensor technologies—would appear to be a great difference from any theoretical models, in particular, for wood building materials. In this paper, we aim to consider a variety of data analysis tools for hygrothermal transfer features. A novel approach for peak and valley detection is proposed based on the discrete differentiation of the original data. Not to be limited to the measure of peak and valley delays for HTM, we propose a cross-correlation analysis to obtain the general delay between two daily time series, which seems to be representative of the delay in the daily time series. Furthermore, the seasonal pattern of the hygrothermal transfer combined with the correlation analysis reveals a reasonable relationship between the delays and the indoor and outdoor climates.

Bamboo weaving is an intangible cultural heritage in China. Exploring people’s aesthetic preferences for bamboo weaving patterns to better serve the design of bamboo architectural decoration can help promote the upgrading of traditional crafts. This study explored the differences between genders in the oculomotor indicators in different bamboo weaving patterns through an eye-movement experimental study combined with a subjective questionnaire to explore whether different genders have aesthetic preferences for people’s pictures of bamboo weaving patterns. The results showed that both males and females preferred less visually striking and softer corrugated patterns, with males paying more attention to the more ‘angular’ hexagonal and triangular patterns, while females were more interested in the more regular and uniform brickwork and diagonal patterns.

Abstract The effects of heat treatment at various temperatures on mechanically separated bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells were examined in terms of color, microstructure, chemical composition, crystallinity, and thermal properties. The heat-treated parenchyma cells and fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), chemical composition analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the colors of bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells were darkened as treatment temperature increased. The microstructure of the treated fibers and parenchyma cells slightly changed, yet the shape of starch granules in parenchyma cells markedly altered at a temperature of above 160 °C. The chemical compositions varied depending on the heat treatment temperature. When treated at 220 °C, the cellulose content was almost unchanged in fibers but increased by 15% in parenchyma cells; the hemicellulose content decreased and the lignin content increased regardless of fibers and parenchyma cells. The cellulose crystal structure was nearly unaffected by heat treatment, but the cellulose crystallinity of fibers changed more pronouncedly than that of parenchyma cells. The thermal stability of parenchyma cells after heat treatment was affected more substantially compared to fibers.

Here, the authors analyze 427 genomes collected from 15 representative geographic areas, and identify genes under balancing selection, putative patterns of historic demography, and candidate genes associated with important traits.

Abstract Bamboo is an anisotropic, hierarchical, and hygroscopic material. Moisture transport in bamboo is one of the most fundamental properties affecting almost all other physical and mechanical properties of the material. This study investigated the water vapor sorption behaviors of bamboo at various structural levels: cell walls, cells (with pits) and bamboo blocks. The specimens with two sorption directions, longitudinal (L) and transverse (T), were measured by saturated salt solution method and dynamic vapor sorption. The parallel exponential kinetics model was used to analyze the sorption kinetics. The results showed that at the cell wall level, the sorption rate and equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of cell wall in the L specimens were larger than those in the T specimens. The differences were probably caused by the looser cell wall layers in the L specimens. At the cellular scale, pits in the cell wall resulted in an enhanced sorption rate and EMC of the T specimens compared with the L specimens where the pits in the parenchyma cells were only distributed in the lateral walls but not in end walls. At the macro scale, the sorption rate and moisture content of bamboo blocks were largely controlled by the vessel cells. As a hierarchically-structured plant, bamboo performs the biological function of moisture transport at all these scales. This work helps improve the understanding of water transport behavior in bamboo, which may lead to better bamboo drying and impregnation processes.

Laminated bamboo lumber (BLL) and bamboo scrimber (BS) are potential environmentally friendly building materials, considering that they are hygroscopic materials and that their hygrothermal performance is closely related to the occupants’ comfort, their building durability, and building energy consumption. This study carried out material property tests on bamboo-based materials (BLL and BS) and analyzed hygrothermal performance simulations on bamboo exterior wall constructions in five major climatic zones using WUFI. Results show that BS had a greater heat storage capacity than BLL. However, BLL showed a relatively higher moisture sorption capacity, and BLL was more easily permeated by vapor than BS. The water content (WC) of 12 walls of BLL and BS was below 20%. BLL and BS met the requirements of the envelope, and the WC of BS was lower than that of BLL. Based on the results, the walls designed in this study are suitable for the corresponding climate zones. In the cold and severe climate zones especially, the external insulation system walls performed better than the internal insulation system. The external insulation system was recommended for these two climate zones. The design and simulation results of walls made of two types of bamboo-based materials provide a scientific basis for the application of the material.

To maintain or adjust posture under the challenges of gravity and increased self-weight, or the effects of light, snow, and slope, plants have the ability to develop a special type of tissue called reaction tissue. The formation of reaction tissue is a result of plant evolution and adaptation. The identification and study of plant reaction tissue are of great significance for understanding the systematics and evolution of plants, the processing and utilization of plant-based materials, and the exploration of new biomimetic materials and biological templates. Trees’ reaction tissues have been studied for many years, and recently, many new findings regarding these tissues have been reported. However, reaction tissue requires further detailed exploration, particularly due to their complex and diverse nature. Moreover, the reaction tissues in gymnosperms, vines, herbs, etc., which display unique biomechanical behavior, have also garnered the attention of research. After summarizing the existing literature, this paper provides an outline of the reaction tissues in woody plants and non-woody plants, and lays emphasis on alternations in the cell wall structure of the xylem in softwood and hardwood. The purpose of this paper is to provide a reference for the further exploration and study of reaction tissues with great diversity.

In recent years, bamboo has been well exploited in the pulp and paper industry. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carriere) J. Houzeau; hereafter M), originated from China with a long history of cultivation as the most abundant resource with the widest distribution area among bamboo plants in China. In this study, Moso bamboo (M) and nine bamboo varieties were selected in the bamboo germplasm resources storage bank of the Anhui Taiping Experimental Station of ICBR. The characteristics of their cell structures were compared, and the differences were analyzed from a genetic perspective. The results showed that M had the highest fiber cell length, fiber cell width, length, and parenchyma width, while GJ showed the lowest of these measurements [P. edulis ’Kikko-chiku’,G.H.Lai]. The fiber wall thickness of Q [P. edulis f. obliquinoda (Z.P.Wang et N.X.Ma) Ohrnberger] was the smallest, while its fiber lumen diameter was the highest in the group. The parenchyma wall thickness and parenchyma lumen diameter of Q were the smallest in the group. The fiber cells of M and Q had better flexibility, which is conducive to improving the tensile strength, break resistance, and folding resistance of paper made from these materials. SY and GJ may be more suitable for ornamental items because of their special appearances. The purpose of this study was to explore the genetic variation patterns of various cell structure indicators among Moso bamboo and its varieties, as well as to develop a strategy of bamboo growing and lumbering based on the local conditions, providing reference data for the utilization of non-woody forest resources.

Bamboo is widely used as an excellent engineering material in construction and furniture. The harvesting equipment and the bamboo application process need to be integrated better. According to the application requirements of the original bamboo structure building, the mechanism and practical experience of bamboo harvesting were analyzed using field experiments in bamboo forests and the finite element method. The operation stability and the side-face planeness of the saw were the direct factors affecting bamboo cutting quality. Further, the indirect factors were the clamp saw effect on the cutting surface, the hollow structure and diaphragm of bamboo, the density and moisture, and the swarf pocket.

Bamboo is a natural material widely used in buildings and bridges that has good mechanical properties. However, the longitudinal connection of bamboo culms is a major problem for the bamboo industry. In this study, sleeve-nailed bamboo specimens were produced, which contained three bamboo pieces. Two bamboo pieces with similar diameters were longitudinally joined by inserting a short bamboo culm with a smaller diameter, fixed with nails. The flexural performance of single beams and two-culm beams were studied. The load-displacement curves and fracture behavior of the specimens were investigated. The results show that the flexural bearing capacity of the single connected bamboo specimen was relatively smaller than that of an unconnected one, while the flexural bearing capacity of the two-culm beam was improved significantly. It can be seen that the lateral connection of bamboo specimens can improve the bearing capacity of the combined bamboo culms. This study provides a basis for promoting the application of sleeve-type nailed connections for bamboo.

Different flattened bamboo boards will produce different visual effects, which directly determine consumers’ preferences. However, their visual characteristics were unknown. To clarify the visual effects of flattened bamboo boards in different bamboo culms, the visual, physical, and psychological quantities were firstly studied using their quantitative color and glossiness measurements, combined with quantitative semantic differential and statistical methods. Key results revealed that the values of lightness L* and blue–yellow index b* from the base to the top of the bamboo culms tended to decrease gradually, while green–red index a* values exhibited an increasing trend, and glossiness GZL (GZT) showed no significant difference. The L* value of bamboo outer layer (30.18) was smaller than that of the outer (61.90) and the inner (68.68), which had an increasing trend from the outside to the inside of the bamboo culm, while the GZL (GZT) values corresponded to 6.07 (4.66), 4.51 (3.12), and 2.77 (2.55), showing an opposite trend. The a* and b* values present a rise-fall tendency. According to visual psychological assessment, the outer was reflected as an “artificial–decorative”, “smooth–warm”, and “comfort–sophisticated” feeling; the inner had an “artificial–practical”, “smooth–warm”, and “comfort–sophisticated” sense; the bamboo outer layer had an “nature–practical”, “rough–cold”, and “sick–primitive” sense. Furthermore, predictive models for visual psychological quantities were constructed. This work provides a theoretical data basis for furniture design and standard materials application of flattened bamboo boards.

The effect of humidity and heat environmental conditions on the durability of conventional bamboo materials is a pressing issue in the reserving phase of biomass materials. In this study, the relationship between the main physicochemical, pyrolytic, and mechanical properties of bamboo before and after ageing has been investigated. Exposure of engineered bamboo raw materials with moisture content up to 10% to alternating humidity and heat cycles (20 °C 98% RH-30 °C 64% RH-40 °C 30% RH) of ageing (HHT) causes degradation of the chemical polymer matrix. Byk Gardner 6840 color difference meter, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), compression intensity, thermogravimetric-infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR), and density changes are used to assess the quality of the material before and after ageing. No significant changes in the moisture content within the range of 6.12 ± 0.327 after two weeks of the engineered bamboo during wet thermal cyclic ageing were determined. However, there were significant differences in mass loss (7.75–9.93 g), cellulose crystallinity, chemical changes, compression strength, and pyrolytic properties. Differences in specimen colors were observed during 10 weeks of the accelerated humidity heat cycling ageing, and TCD variations ranged from 3.75 to 20.08 and from 0.25 and 3.24, respectively. Reduced cellulose crystallinity (36.459–22.638%), axial compressive strength (63.07–88.09 MPa), and modulus of rupture (2409–4286 MPa) were found during aging, whereas deformation and ductility properties were improved. Both natural and humidity heat ageing improve thermal stability and peak pyrolysis rates (0.739–0.931; 0.731–0.797). Humidity heat cyclic ageing will assist in the design and risk assessment of warehousing environments for industrial applications.

To achieve value-added utilization of domestic bamboo and plantation wood resources, this study investigated the feasibility of using flattened bamboo and Chinese fir for manufacturing cross-laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT). Two types of adhesives, one-component polyurethane (PUR), and phenol resorcinol formaldehyde (PRF), and three applied pressure parameters (0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 MPa) were used to fabricate small CLBT panels (375 mm × 500 mm). In this study, block shear and delamination tests were conducted to examine the bond quality and durability of CLBT panels. The results showed that a significant difference in the bonding shear strength (BSS) in both directions. The bonding shear strength in the minor strength direction (BSSminor) was 1.81–3.45 times higher than the bonding shear strength in the major strength direction (BSSmajor). The adhesive type was the major factor affecting the bond quality and delamination, while the bonding pressure had no significant effect on the bond quality and delamination. Compared with PRF adhesives, CLBT specimens prepared from PUR had higher bonding shear strength (BSS) and wood failure percentage (WFP). However, the durability of delamination specimens prepared by PUR was not as good as layered specimens prepared by PRF.

The helmet is a mandatory tool for safe production, and bamboo helmets can be used as an alternative to the traditional plastic safety helmet. In this study, bamboo helmets were modified with urea-formaldehyde resin and have shown excellent impact resistance, good color sensitivity, and high gloss. The excellent performance of the bamboo helmet comes from the structure designed by imitating the gradient characteristics of bamboo and the modification of urea-formaldehyde resin. The pores and defects of bamboo in the helmet modified by urea-formaldehyde resin are filled and repaired. The chemical combination of urea-formaldehyde resin and bamboo reduces bamboo’s crystallinity and improves the bamboo helmet’s impact resistance. The development of bamboo helmets provides a supplement and option for the traditional helmet market while opening up new ways of bamboo utilization.

To identify hygrothermal transfer patterns of exterior walls is a crucial issue in the design, assessment, and construction of buildings. Temperature and relative humidity, as sensor monitoring data, were collected from the outside of the wall to interior bamboo and wood composite sheathing over the year in Huangshan Mountain District, Anhui Province, China. Combining the machine learning method of reservoir computing (RC) with agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC), a novel clustering framework was built for better extraction of the characteristics of hygrothermal transfer on the time series data. The experimental results confirmed the hypothesis that the change in the temperature and relative humidity of the outside of the wall (RHT12) dominated the change of the interior sheathing (RHT11). The delay time between two adjacent peaks in temperature was 1 to 2 h, while that in relative humidity was 1 to 4 h from the outside of the wall to interior bamboo and wood composite sheathing. There was no significant difference in temperature peak delay time between April and July. Temperature peak delay time was 50 to 120 min. However, relative humidity peak delay time was 100 to 240 min in April, whereas it was 20 to 120 min in July. The impact formed a relatively linear relationship between outdoor temperature and relative humidity peak delay time. The hygrothermal transfer patterns were characterized effectively by the peak delays. The discovery of the hygrothermal transfer patterns for the bamboo and wood composite walls using the machine learning method will facilitate the development of energy-efficient and durable bamboo and wood composite wall materials and structures.

Color is one of the most important characteristics of a material’s appearance, which affects the additional value of bamboo and psychological feelings of users. Previous studies have shown that the dimensional stability, mildew resistance and durability of bamboo were improved after tung oil thermal treatment. In this study, the effects of tung oil thermal treatment on bamboo color at different temperatures and durations of time were investigated. The results show that the lightness (L*) of bamboo decreased as the tung oil temperature or duration of time increased. The red–green coordinates (a*) and color saturation (C*) of bamboo were gradually increased as the tung oil temperature rose from 23 °C to 160 °C, while the a* and C* were gradually decreased when the temperature continued to rise from 160 °C to 200 °C. There was no significant difference in the yellow–blue coordinates (b*) of bamboo when the duration was prolonged from 0.5 h to 3 h with tung oil thermal treatment at 140 °C. Eye movement data show that the popularity of bamboo furniture was significantly improved at 23–100 °C and slightly improved at 160–180 °C with tung oil treatment. Therefore, tung oil thermal treatment plays a positive role in improving visual effects and additional value of bamboo.

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carriere) J. Houzeau), native to China, is one of the most economically and ecologically important bamboo species. Since the economic interests and the strong clonality, it has been widely cultivated in southern China, which inevitably reduces the natural stands and leads to gene loss in this species. In this study, three natural populations of Moso bamboo distributed in Anhui, Guangxi, and Zhejiang province, were used to analyze the correlation between phenotypic traits, cell structure, and material properties from the perspective of phenotypic, genetic, and environmental. Among those traits and properties, fiber width was correlated with wall thickness at breast height and average nodes length under branch positively. Leaf length was correlated positively with fiber lumen diameter and parenchyma lumen diameter. Furthermore, it showed a very close correlation between moisture content, bending strength, modulus of elasticity, and diameter at breast height, clear height, and leaf length. The lumen diameter of fiber cell wall thickness is positively correlated with bending strength and modulus of elasticity. Density is positively correlated with parenchyma cell wall thickness. The experimental design is relatively detailed and representative, and the workload is huge. This study reflects the research objectives with scientific and rational experiments and data. This study will analyze the differences of various indicators from the perspective of genetic to build a bridge between micro-structure and macro-structure for rational utilization of the whole area of Moso bamboo resources in China.

Bamboo, with its fast growth rate and outstanding mechanical properties, has received increasing attention as a green material for engineering applications. Compared to other mechanical properties, little is known about fracture toughness, especially the toughening mechanism of bamboo. In this study, the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of bamboo with different proportions of fiber cells (FCs) and parenchyma cells (PCs) was tested, using in situ SEM to investigate the intrinsic mechanisms and extrinsic mechanisms at the cellular level. The results showed that both initiation and crack growth energies of high fiber density region were the lowest, and the crack growth energy of middle fiber density region was the highest. The intrinsic toughening in bamboo is associated with plastic zone size and crack kinking which are governed by PCs. The extrinsic toughening is related to fiber bridging which is governed by FCs. Having the highest fracture toughness, the middle region of bamboo may be the best choice of natural fiber for manufacturing high performance green composite materials. This work fills the gaps in the knowledge of fracture toughness and mechanisms of bamboo, which is vital to the utilization of bamboo in the structural applications. Rosin was used to treat round bamboo culm using the impregnation method. The quantitative color and gloss measurements combined with a qualitative eye tracking experiment were used to evaluate the effect of rosin treatment under different temperatures on the visual characteristics of the bamboo surface. Surface morphology analysis was also used to explore the mechanism of modification. The results showed that proper heating of the modified system was conducive to the formation of a continuous rosin film, which increased the gloss value. The maximum gloss value of 19.6 achieved at 50 °C was 122.7% higher than the gloss value of the control group. Heating decreased the brightness of the bamboo culm and changed the color from the green and yellow tones to red and blue. Additionally, at temperatures higher than 60 °C, the bamboo epidermal layer was damaged or shed, and stripes formed on the culm surface. The density of these stripes increased with an increase in treatment temperature. Eye movement experiment and subjective evaluation showed that high gloss would produce dazzling feeling, such as at 50 °C, while low gloss will appear dim, such as at 80 °C, while the gloss at 40 °C and 60 °C were appropriate. Additionally, the solid color surface below 60 °C had a large audience of about 73%, and the striped surface above 60 °C was preferred by 27% of the subjects.

Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin, modified using nano-copper with varying contents (0 wt%, 1 wt%, 3 wt%), was manufactured to improve the mechanical properties of Chinese fir. The morphology, chemical, micromechanical and micromechanical properties of the samples were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nanoindentation (NI) and traditional mechanical testing. The TEM and AFM results indicated that the in situ synthesized nano-copper particles were well-dispersed, and spherical, with a diameter of about 70 nm in PF resin. From the FTIR chemical changes detected by FTIR inferred that the nano-copper modified PF resin penetrated into the Chinese fir cell walls and interacted with the acetyl groups of hemicellulose by forming a crosslinked structure. Accordingly, the micro-mechanical properties of the Chinese fir cell walls were enhanced after treatment with nano-copper modified PF resin. The filling of the PF-1-Cu resin (1 wt% nano-copper) in the wood resulted in 13.7% and 22.2% increases in the elastic modulus (MOE) and hardness, respectively, of the cell walls. Besides, the impact toughness and compressive strength of the Chinese fir impregnated with PF-1-Cu resin were 21.8% and 8.2% higher than that of the PF-0-Cu resin. Therefore, in situ synthesized nano-copper-modified PF resin is a powerful treatment method for Chinese fir due to improved diffusive properties and reinforcement of the mechanical properties.

Abstract Porous N-doped carbons hold good prospects for application in supercapacitor due to their low-cost, large surface area, good surface wettability, high electrical conductivity as well as extra pseudocapacitance. However, most synthetic methods required the tedious and multiple-step process with the assistance of hard/soft templates or the massive use of chemical reagents, and exogenous nitrogen sources, which made them difficult to realize industrial production and application. Here, we described a novel hierarchical porous N-doped carbons fabricated by a facile and sustainable approach via hydrothermal treatment and subsequent carbonization process by using renewable bamboo shoots as the starting material without any templates, additional chemical activation and nitrogen source. The obtained bamboo shoot-derived carbons possessed a large BET surface area (up to 972 m2 g−1), hierarchically interconnected porous framework, rich and uniform nitrogen incorporation (3.0 at%). Benefiting from these unique features, the novel carbon-based electrode materials displayed a high capacitance of 412 F g−1 in KOH electrolyte and long cycling life stability. Thus, an advanced electrode material for high-performance supercapacitor was successfully assembled by a simple and scalable synthesis route with abundant renewable resources freely available in nature.

A simple, practical, and low-technology approach was developed to fabricate corrugated bamboo particleboards (CBP), a novel bamboo product with a corrugated structure, from bamboo waste (planer waste). This product could be manufactured anywhere in the world where the bamboo industry develops. The selected mechanical and physical properties of CBP were prepared with urea formaldehyde resin at three press temperatures and two density levels and were evaluated. The results showed that the performance of CBPs is highly dependent upon the board density. The static bending strength of CBP laminated with MDF initially increases, and then decreases with increasing press temperature. Increasing the magnitude of the press temperature has a slightly positive effect on the thickness swelling and water absorption. Compared with the excellent mechanical strength of CBP (laminated with MDF), the thickness swelling value of this bamboo-based particleboard without any waterproofing treatment was lower than the minimal requirement of the EN standard.

Based on the steam explosion pretreatment that has been applied to other types of lignocellulosic biomass, the steam explosion pretreatment of bamboo, along with a study of the chemical compositions and enzymatic hydrolyzability of substrates, was conducted. The results show that steam explosion pretreatment can greatly enhance the cellulose-to-glucose conversion yield after enzymatic hydrolysis, which is sometimes affected by bamboo age and steam explosion conditions. When the steam explosion pretreatment conditions were 2.0 MPa (pressure) and 4 min (time), the cellulose-to-glucose conversion yield of 2-year-old bamboo substrate was 62.5%. However, the cellulose-to-glucose conversion yield of bamboo substrates after direct (without steam explosion pretreatment) sodium chlorite/acetic acid delignification was 93.1%. Fermentation of enzymatic hydrolyzates with Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in about 88.1% to 96.2% of the corresponding theoretical ethanol yield after 24 h.

Pretreating bamboo is essential to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocellulose for bioethanol production. In this study, the effectiveness of formic, acetic, and sulfuric acids in pretreating bamboo were compared. To measure pretreatment efficiency, the enzymatic digestibility of the pretreated bamboo substrates was determined. Monomeric glucose conversion yield was measured after enzymatic hydrolysis. Additionally, the sugar degradation products fermentation inhibitors were measured after pretreatment. After conducting many tests, it was determined that pretreatment with dilute formic acid at 180 °C and 30 min can be an acceptable alternative to dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment.

Larch flakes infested with white rot fungus were examined following several infestation durations with respect to the mass loss, tensile strength, hardness, porosity, and change in cell wall components. Nano-indentation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy testing methods were employed to investigate the property changes during the decay process. The testing results showed that the mass loss was greater and the longitudinal tensile strength decreased following the first three-week infestation. Nano-indentation measurements revealed that the average MOE of infested larch flakes decreased from 24.0 to 17.1 GPa and the average hardness declined from 528.47 to 427.87 MPa following 12 weeks of infestation. After the first three weeks, the relative crystallinity, surface area, and micropore area of the infested samples increased. These parameters decreased after three weeks had elapsed. Changes in the absorption peaks observed in FTIR explained that the first three-week infestation had a strong effect on the mass loss and strength changes. This suggests that white rot fungus intensely attacked the lignin component of the biomass during the first three weeks of infestation.

Treatment with water-soluble low-molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde resin is an effective method to improve wood properties. In this paper, plantation wood of Chinese fir was modified with low-molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde resin. The absorbance by tracheid cell walls of phenol-formaldehyde resin in treated and untreated reference samples were measured with an ultraviolet micro-spectrophotometer. The UV absorbance values of earlywood tracheids and middle lamella in treated wood were significantly increased, with an average increase of 49% and 23%, respectively. Moreover, after treatment with low-molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde resin, the UV absorbance of the earlywood tracheid cell walls of Chinese fir increased to more than 47%, regardless of whether or not the cell lumens were filled with resin. After treatment with low-molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde resin, the UV absorbance of earlywood tracheid cell walls at different locations did not vary greatly. This study provides direct support for the improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of resin-modified Chinese fir in terms of penetration of the resin into the cell walls.

Bamboo shoots, a promising renewable biomass, mainly consist of carbohydrates and other nitrogen-related compounds, such as proteins, amino acids and nucleotides. In this work, nitrogen self-doped activated carbons derived from bamboo shoots were prepared via a simultaneous carbonization and activation process. The adsorption properties of the prepared samples were evaluated by removing methylene blue from waste water. The factors that affect the adsorption process were examined, including initial concentration, contact time and pH of methylene blue solution. The resulting that BSNC-800-4 performed better in methylene blue removal from waste water, due to its high specific surface area (2270.9 m2 g−1), proper pore size (2.19 nm) and relatively high nitrogen content (1.06%). Its equilibrium data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 458 mg g−1 and a removal efficiency of 91.7% at methylene blue concentration of 500 mg L−1. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be used to accurately estimate the carbon material’s (BSNC-800-4) adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism between methylene blue solution and BSNC-800-4 was controlled by film diffusion. This study provides an alternative way to develop nitrogen self-doped activated carbons to better meet the needs of the adsorption applications.

Functional fabrics have gained attention as an environmentally-friendly synthesis route. In the current study, novelty bamboo pulp fabrics with thermal conductivity properties were prepared by coating the fabric with graphene and cellulose nanocrystal (G/CNC) solutions. The influences of G and CNC concentrations on properties of fabrics were studied. The viscosities of the G/CNC solutions increased with an increase of G contents. G had an obvious thickening effect. Furthermore, compounded fabrics with different G and CNC contents (GCBPFs) were prepared and extensively characterized in terms of thermal and mechanical properties, and morphology. The ultimate thermal conductivity, bursting strength, and tensile strength of the GCBPF were 0.136 W/m·K, 1.514 MPa, and 25.8 MPa, with 4 wt.% CNC and 3 wt.% G contents, respectively. The results demonstrated that the as-fabricated GCBPFs with favorable thermal conductivity could be applied as a novel fast cooling textile for the clothing industry.

In this study, the effects of tung oil heat treatment on the physico-mechanical properties of moso bamboo were investigated. Here, heat treatment in tung oil at 100⁻200 °C was used to modify natural bamboo materials. The changes in the nanostructures of cell walls in bamboo caused by oil heat treatment, like density, chemical compositions, and cellulose crystalline, were evaluated to study their correlation with mechanical properties. Results showed that the mechanical performance of bamboo, such as ultimate stress, modulus of elasticity (MOE), and modulus of rupture (MOR), didn’t reduce after heat treatment below 200 °C, compared with the untreated bamboo, which was mainly due to the tung oil uptake, stable cellulose content, and the increment of cellulose crystalline. No remarkable change in the ultimate strain occurred for bamboo materials thermally treated below 140 °C, but it decreased obviously at the heating temperature over 180 °C, mainly due to the degradation of hemicellulose resulting in a decrease in the viscoelasticity of cell wall.

Bamboo is a potential major bio-energy resource. Tests were carried out to compare and evaluate the property of bamboo and rice straw pellets, rice straw being the other main source of biomass solid fuel in China. All physical properties of untreated bamboo pellets (UBP), untreated rice straw pellets (URP), carbonized bamboo pellets (CBP), and carbonized rice straw pellets (CRP) met the requirements of Pellet Fuels Institute Standard Specification for Residential/Commercial Densified including dimension, density, and strength. The inorganic ash (15.94 %) and gross heat value (15375 J/g) of rice straw pellets could not meet the requirement of Pellet Fuels Institute Standard Specification for Residential/Commercial Densified (≤6.0% for PFI Utility) and the minimum requirement for making commercial pellets of DIN 51731 (>17500 J/g), respectively. Rice straw pellets have been a main type of biomass solid fuel and widely used. Bamboo pellets have better combustion properties compared with rice straw pellets. It is confirmed that bamboo pellets have great potential as biomass solid fuel, especially with respect to development of commercial pellets on an industrial scale in China. The information provided by this research is useful for development and utilization of bamboo resource and pellets.

Samples of Chinese fir were treated with either low-molecular-weight or commercial phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins. The macro- and micromechanical properties of the treated and untreated samples were determined. The average longitudinal tensile modulus of elasticity (MOE) was 30.88% larger for the samples treated with the low-molecular-weight PF resin than it was for the untreated samples. The average MOE of the samples treated with the commercial PF resin was 29.84% less than that of the untreated samples. The micromechanical properties of the samples were investigated through nanoindentation studies. For the samples modified with low-molecular-weight PF resin, the values of average MOE and hardness were 32.94 and 32.93%, respectively, greater than those of the untreated samples. In contrast, the average MOE and hardness values were 11.99 and 18.14%, respectively, greater for the samples modified with commercial PF resin compared to the untreated samples. It could be inferred that the low-molecular-weight PF resin was able to diffuse into the nanopores in the S2 layer of the tracheid cell wall of the Chinese fir, thereby improving its macromechanical properties. Modification with low-molecular-weight PF resin was an effective way to enhance the longitudinal macromechanical properties of wood from the Chinese fir.

Bamboo’s ability to grow on nutrient-poor soils, with little requirement of silvicultural management, easy harvesting characteristics, vegetative propagation, fast growth, and a host of other desirable characteristics, make it a good candidate as an energy crop. Energy crops are cultivated solely for use as sources of energy through their conversion into alcohols. This study set out to determine the potential of moso bamboo to be used in the two-stage organosolv and alkali pretreatment for the production of bioethanol. Moso bamboo contains 63.3% (w/w) holocellulose and can serve as a low-cost feedstock for bioethanol production. After organosolv pretreatment (2% w/w H2SO4 in 75% w/w ethanol, 160 °C for 30 min), the bamboo was further delignified through pretreatment of sodium hydroxide (10% and 20% w/w) or calcium hydroxide (10% w/w), which resulted in about 96.5% (NaOH) and 85.7% (Ca(OH)2) lignin removal. The enzymatic hydrolysis of delignified cellulosic bamboo substrate with cellulase (15 FPU/g glucan) and β-glucosidase (30 IU/g glucan) showed 80.9% to 95.5% saccharification after 48 h incubation at 50 °C and pH 4.8. Fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates with Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in about 89.1% to 92.0% of the corresponding theoretical ethanol yield after 24 h.

Bamboo is a potential lignocellulosic biomass for the production of bioethanol because of its high cellulose and hemicelluloses content. In this research, ethanol organosolv pretreatment with dilute sulfuric acid as the catalyst was studied in order to enhance enzymatic saccharification of moso bamboo. The addition of 2% (w/w bamboo) dilute sulfuric acid in 75% ethanol had a particularly strong effect on fractionation of bamboo. It yielded a solids fraction containing 83.4% cellulose in the treated substrate. The cellulose conversion to glucose yield reached 77.1 to 83.4% after enzymatic hydrolysis of the solids fraction for 48 h at an enzyme loading of 15 FPU cellulase/g cellulose and 30 IU β-glucosidase/g cellulose. The enzymatic hydrolysis rate was significantly accelerated as the ethanol organosolv pretreatment time increased, reaching the highest enzymatic glucose yield of 83.4% after 48 h at 50 °C. The concentrations of fermentation inhibitors such as HMF (5-hydroxy-2-methyl furfural) and furfural were 0.96 g/L and 4.38 g/L in the spent liquor after the ethanol organosolv pretreatment, which were slightly lower than the concentrations quantified during H2SO4-water treatment. Spent liquor was diluted with water, and more than 87.2% of lignin in raw bamboo was recovered as ethanol organosolv lignin through the filtration process.

Compression wood is commonly found in Masson pine. To evaluate the mechanical properties of the cell wall of Masson pine compression and opposite wood, nanoindentation was used. The results showed that the average values of hardness and cell wall modulus of elasticity of opposite wood were slightly higher than those of compression wood. With increasing age of the annual ring, the modulus of elasticity showed a negative correlation with microfibril angle, but a weak correlation was observed for hardness. In opposite and compression wood from the same annual ring, the differences in average values of modulus of elasticity and hardness were small. These slight differences were explained by the change of microfibril angle (MFA), the press-in mode of nanoindentation, and the special structure of compression wood. The mechanical properties were almost the same for early, transition, and late wood in a mature annual ring of opposite wood. It can therefore be inferred that the average modulus of elasticity (MOE) and hardness of the cell walls in a mature annual ring were not being affected by cell wall thickness.

Bamboo is a type of biomass materials that has great potential as a bio-energy resource in China. The thermal-mechanical behavior of bamboo plays an important role in the formation process of pellets. To investigate the effect of moisture content (MC) on thermal-mechanical behavior of bamboo, the storage modulus and loss factor of moso bamboo was determined using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) from -50 to 150 oC. The experimental results showed that the general feature of bamboo thermal-mechanical properties with temperature is similar to other cellulosic materials, and they are affected by MC. A substantial decrease of storage modulus over the entire temperature range implies that bamboo underwent a glass to rubber transition. Bamboo, at lower MC, has a higher storage modulus, which decreases the mechanical strength of pellets. The loss factor exhibited two major transitions for all samples. There was an α-transition (α1), attributed to glass transition of lignin, peaking in a higher temperature range. The second major relaxation (α2), located in a lower temperature range, was attributed to glass transition of hemicelluloses. Activating lignin and hemicelluloses using moisture and temperature in the temperature range of glass transition can be very helpful to achieve durable particle-particle bonding.

Highly porous nitrogen-doped carbons derived from bamboo shoots (BSNCs) were prepared through an in-situ synthesis method. The results showed that BSNCs had a large specific surface area, a relatively high nitrogen content and hierarchically porous structures. The catalytic properties of BSNCs were evaluated based on Knoevenagel condensation and transesterification reactions. Deprotonated BSNC-700 exhibited high efficiency for the model reactions as a solid base catalyst, and the superior sample deprotonated in tBuOK solution with a concentration of 0.1 increased the conversion rate from 16.1% to 76.0% for Knoevenagel condensation. The two reactions proceeded smoothly in the presence of deprotonated BSNC-700. The results also showed that the catalyst could be recycled for several times for Knoevenagel condensation. The results from this research will provide a guideline to develop bamboo shoot as a precursor to fabricate a superb solid base catalyst.

Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) has been an important afforestation species in northeast China. It has obvious defects of buckling and cracking easily, which are caused by its chemical components. Trametes versicolor (L.) Lloyd, a white-rot fungus, can decompose the cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the wood. White-rot fungus was used to biologically degrade Chinese fir wood. The effects of different degradation time on the Chinese fir wood’s mechanical properties, micromorphology, chemical components, and crystallinity were studied. The results showed that the heartwood of Chinese fir was more durable than the sapwood and the durability class of Chinese fir was III. Trametes versicolor (L.) Lloyd had a greater influence on the mechanical properties (especially with respect to the modulus of elasticity (MOE)) for the sapwood. Trametes versicolor (L.) Lloyd degraded Chinese fir and colonized the lumen of various wood cell types in Chinese fir, penetrated cell walls via pits, caused erosion troughs and bore holes, and removed all cell layers. The ability of white-rot fungus to change the chemical composition mass fraction for Chinese fir was: hemicellulose > lignin > cellulose. The durability of the chemical compositions was: lignin > cellulose > hemicellulose. The crystallinity of the cellulose decreased and the mean size of the ordered (crystalline) domains increased after being treated by white-rot fungus.

Bamboo materials with improved antibacterial performance based on ZnO and graphene oxide (GO) were fabricated by vacuum impregnation and hydrothermal strategies. The Zn2+ ions and GO nanosheets were firstly infiltrated into the bamboo structure, followed by dehydration and crystallization upon hydrothermal treatment, leading to the formation of ZnO/GO nanocomposites anchored in the bulk bamboo. The bamboo composites were characterized by several techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which confirmed the existence of GO and ZnO in the composites. Antibacterial performances of bamboo samples were evaluated by the bacteriostatic circle method. The introduction of ZnO/GO nanocomposites into bamboo yielded ZnO/GO/bamboo materials which exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli, Gram-negative) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis, Gram-positive) bacteria and high thermal stability. The antimicrobial bamboo would be expected to be a promising material for the application in the furniture, decoration, and construction industry.
