16. Synthesis and Characterisation of CeO2 Coatings on the AZ31 Alloy for Corrosion Protection and In Vitro Biocompatibility of MC3T3-E1 Pre-Osteoblasts

Abstract

The use of bioabsorbable metals as temporary medical implants has attracted considerable research interest as they do not require a second surgical operation for removal after the healing process is completed. However, magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have a degradation rate that is too high in biological environments. Therefore, it must be controlled using various strategies. In this study, an AZ31-Mg-based alloy coated with CeO2 is investigated to analyse the effect of the coating on its corrosion protection and biocompatibility. The AZ31 alloy is anodised with NaOH solution, before coating to stabilise the alloy surface. The CeO2 coating is deposited on anodised AZ31 by chemical conversion treatment. The electrochemical properties of samples are evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic polarisation curves using Hank’s solution. Structural and morphological characterisation of the samples are performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Additionally, biocompatibility is determined by live/dead assay using MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts. The preliminary results indicate that CeO2 coatings exhibit higher electrochemical properties. Additionally, an increase in the ratio of live/dead cells of the AZ31OH-CeO2 surface is detected, in contrast with AZ31, thus indicating improvement in biocompatibility upon CeO2 coating.

Abstract

In dieser Arbeit wurden neue Methoden zur mikrostrukturellen Beschreibung pulvermetallurgisch hergestellter hochlegierter Werkzeugstähle entwickelt und implementiert. Diese zielen auf die zahlenmäßig messbare Beschreibung der morphologischen Eigenschaften von Karbiden ab. Die vorgestellten Ansätze basieren auf physikalischen Deskriptoren, die so ein Verständnis der Mikrostrukturbildung unter Berücksichtigung der zugrunde liegenden stochastischen Mechanismen fördern. Die entwickelten Techniken wurden angewandt, um die Auswirkungen der Prozessvariablen des heißisostatischen Pressens auf Karbidgröße, -form und -anordnung des Schnellarbeitsstahls PM HS 3-3-4 zu untersuchen. Dabei wurden bisher unbekannte Zusammenhänge von Herstellungsverfahren und Gefügebildung beschrieben, die das Verständnis der Mikrostrukturentstehung in diesem besonderen Bereich der Werkstoffwissenschaft und -technik voranbringen., This work proposes and implements novel microstructural characterization methods that serve as tools to both describe and understand the carbide morphological traits of powder metallurgy high-alloyed tool steels. To that end, the presented approaches are built around physical descriptors that effortlessly motivate the discussion of the underlying stochastic mechanisms that are responsible for microstructure formation. Using the developed techniques, this dissertation explores the effect of the process variables during hot isostatic pressing, the most widespread manufacturing route for PM tool steels, on the carbide size, shape, and arrangement of the commercially available high-speed steel PM HS 3-3-4. In this process, new process-structure links were revealed that bring us one step closer to fully understanding this particular corner of Materials Science and Engineering.

Abstract

COVID-19; Registries; Vaccination COVID-19; Registros; Vacunación COVID-19; Registres; Vacunació Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-term effects in vulnerable cohorts. The COVAD-2 survey follows on from the baseline COVAD-1 survey with the aim to collect patient-reported data on the long-term safety and tolerability of COVID-19 vaccines in immune modulation. The e-survey has been extensively pilot-tested and validated with translations into multiple languages. Anticipated results will help improve vaccination efforts and reduce the imminent risks of COVID-19 infection, especially in understudied vulnerable groups.
