Search

Understanding the temporal characteristics of data from low frequency radio telescopes is of importance in devising suitable calibration strategies. Application of time series analysis techniques to data from radio telescopes can reveal a wealth of information that can aid in calibration. In this paper, we investigate singular spectrum analysis (SSA) as an analysis tool for radio data. We show the intimate connection between SSA and Fourier techniques. We develop the relevant mathematics starting with an idealised periodic dataset and proceeding to include various non-ideal behaviours. We propose a novel technique to obtain long-term gain changes in data, leveraging the periodicity arising from sky drift through the antenna beams. We also simulate several plausible scenarios and apply the techniques to a 30-day time series data collected during June 2021 from SITARA - a short-spacing two element interferometer for global 21-cm detection. Applying the techniques to real data, we find that the first reconstructed component - the trend - has a strong anti-correlation with the local temperature suggesting temperature fluctuations as the most likely origin for the observed variations in the data. We also study the limitations of the calibration in the presence of diurnal gain variations and find that such variations are the likely impediment to calibrating SITARA data with SSA., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aiming to fill a crucial gap in our observational knowledge of the early Universe, experiments around the world continue to attempt to verify the claimed detection of the redshifted 21-cm signal from Cosmic Dawn by the EDGES experiment. This sky-averaged or 'global' signal from neutral hydrogen should be detectable at low radio frequencies (50-200 MHz), but is difficult to measure due to bright foreground emission and difficulties in reaching the required levels of instrumental-calibration precision. In this paper we outline our progress toward using a novel new method to measure the global redshifted 21-cm signal. Motivated by the need to use alternative methods with very different systematic errors to EDGES for an independent result, we employ an array of closely-spaced antennas to measure the global sky signal interferometrically, rather than using the conventional approach with a single antenna. We use simulations to demonstrate our newly-developed methods and show that, for an idealised instrument, a 21-cm signal could theoretically be extracted from the visibilities of an array of closely-spaced dipoles. We verify that our signal-extraction methods work on real data using observations made with a Square Kilometre-Array-like prototype; the Engineering Development Array-2. Finally, we use the lessons learned in both our simulations and observations to lay out a clear plan for future work, which will ultimately lead to a new global redshifted 21-cm instrument: the All-Sky SignAl Short-Spacing INterferometer (ASSASSIN)., 18 pages, 13 figures

Global 21-cm experiments require exquisitely precise calibration of the measurement systems in order to separate the weak 21-cm signal from Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds as well as instrumental systematics. Hitherto, experiments aiming to make this measurement have concentrated on measuring this signal using the single element approach. However, an alternative approach based on interferometers with short baselines is expected to alleviate some of the difficulties associated with a single element approach such as precision modelling of the receiver noise spectrum. Short spacing Interferometer Telescope probing cosmic dAwn and epoch of ReionisAtion (SITARA) is a short spacing interferometer deployed at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO). It is intended to be a prototype or a test-bed to gain a better understanding of interferometry at short baselines, and develop tools to perform observations and data calibration. In this paper, we provide a description of the SITARA system and its deployment at the MRO, and discuss strategies developed to calibrate SITARA. We touch upon certain systematics seen in SITARA data and their modelling. We find that SITARA has sensitivity to all sky signals as well as non-negligible noise coupling between the antennas. It is seen that the coupled receiver noise has a spectral shape that broadly matches the theoretical calculations reported in prior works. We also find that when appropriately modified antenna radiation patterns taking into account the effects of mutual coupling are used, the measured data are well modelled by the standard visibility equation., 27 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in PASA

Current attempts to measure the 21cm Power Spectrum of neutral hydrogen during the Epoch of Reionization are limited by systematics which produce measured upper limits above both the thermal noise and the expected cosmological signal. These systematics arise from a combination of observational, instrumental, and analysis effects. In order to further understand and mitigate these effects, it is instructive to explore different aspects of existing datasets. One such aspect is the choice of observing field. To date, MWA EoR observations have largely focused on the EoR0 field. In this work, we present a new detailed analysis of the EoR1 field. The EoR1 field is one of the coldest regions of the Southern radio sky, but contains the very bright radio galaxy Fornax-A. The presence of this bright extended source in the primary beam of the interferometer makes the calibration and analysis of EoR1 particularly challenging. We demonstrate the effectiveness of a recently developed shapelet model of Fornax-A in improving the results from this field. We also describe and apply a series of data quality metrics which identify and remove systematically contaminated data. With substantially improved source models, upgraded analysis algorithms and enhanced data quality metrics, we determine EoR power spectrum upper limits based on analysis of the best $\sim$14-hours data observed during 2015 and 2014 at redshifts 6.5, 6.8 and 7.1, with the lowest $2\sigma$ upper limit at z=6.5 of $\Delta^2 \leq (73.78 ~\mathrm{mK)^2}$ at $k=0.13~\mathrm{h~ Mpc^{-1}}$, improving on previous EoR1 measurement results., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We follow up on the surprising recent announcement by Vernstrom et al. (2021) of the detection of the synchrotron cosmic web. We attempt to reproduce their detection with new observations with the Phase II, extended configuration of the Murchison Widefield Array at \SI{118.5}{\mega \hertz}. We reproduce their detection methodology by stacking pairs of nearby luminous red galaxies (LRGs) -- used as tracers for clusters and galaxy groups -- contained in our low frequency radio observations. We show that our observations are significantly more sensitive than those used in Vernstrom et al., and that our angular sensitivity is sufficient. And yet, we make no statistically significant detection of excess radio emission along the bridge spanning the LRG pairs. This non-detection is true both for the original LRG pair catalogue as used in Vernstrom et al., as well as for other larger catalogues with modified selection criteria. Finally, we return to the original data sets used in Vernstrom et al., and find that whilst we clearly reproduce the excess X-ray emission from ROSAT, we are not able to reproduce any kind of broad and extended excess intercluster filamentary emission using the original 118.5 MHz MWA survey data. The GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) is a radio continuum survey at 76-227 MHz of the entire southern sky (Declination $ 55$ mJy across an area of $\approx 16,700~\mathrm{deg}^{2}$. From the optical spectra, we identify the dominant physical process responsible for the radio emission from each galaxy: 73 per cent are fuelled by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and 27 per cent by star formation. We present the local radio luminosity function for AGN and star-forming galaxies at 200 MHz and characterise the typical radio spectra of these two populations between 76 MHz and $\sim 1$ GHz. For the AGN, the median spectral index between 200 MHz and $\sim 1$ GHz, $\alpha_{\mathrm{high}}$, is $-0.600 \pm 0.010$ (where $S \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) and the median spectral index within the GLEAM band, $\alpha_{\mathrm{low}}$, is $-0.704 \pm 0.011$. For the star-forming galaxies, the median value of $\alpha_{\mathrm{high}}$ is $-0.650 \pm 0.010$ and the median value of $\alpha_{\mathrm{low}}$ is $-0.596 \pm 0.015$. Among the AGN population, flat-spectrum sources are more common at lower radio luminosity, suggesting the existence of a significant population of weak radio AGN that remain core-dominated even at low frequencies. However, around 4 per cent of local radio AGN have ultra-steep radio spectra at low frequencies ($\alpha_{\mathrm{low}} < -1.2$). We report on the discovery of a mysterious ultra-steep spectrum (USS) synchrotron source in the galaxy cluster Abell 2877. We have observed the source with the Murchison Widefield Array at five frequencies across 72-231 MHz and have found the source to exhibit strong spectral curvature over this range as well the steepest known spectra of a synchrotron cluster source, with a spectral index across the central three frequency bands of $\alpha = -5.97^{+0.40}_{-0.48}$. Higher frequency radio observations, including a deep observation with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, fail to detect any of the extended diffuse emission. The source is approximately 370 kpc wide and bears an uncanny resemblance to a jellyfish with two peaks of emission and long tentacles descending south towards the cluster centre. Whilst the `USS Jellyfish' defies easy classification, we here propose that the phenomenon is caused by the reacceleration and compression of multiple aged electron populations from historic active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, so-called `radio phoenix', by an as yet undetected weak cluster-scale mechanism. The USS Jellyfish adds to a growing number of radio phoenix in cool-core clusters with unknown reacceleration mechanisms; as the first example of a polyphoenix, however, this implies the mechanism is on the scale of the cluster itself. Indeed, we show that in simulations, emission akin to the USS Jellyfish can be produced as a short-lived, transient phase in the evolution of multiple interacting AGN remnants when subject to weak external shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

One of the principal systematic constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) experiment is the accuracy of the foreground calibration model. Recent results have shown that highly accurate models of extended foreground sources, and including models for sources in both the primary beam and its sidelobes, are necessary for reducing foreground power. To improve the accuracy of the source models for the EoR fields observed by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), we conducted the MWA Long Baseline Epoch of Reionisation Survey (LoBES). This survey consists of multi-frequency observations of the main MWA EoR fields and their eight neighbouring fields using the MWA Phase II extended array. We present the results of the first half of this survey centred on the MWA EoR0 observing field (centred at RA(J2000) 0 h, Dec(J2000) -27 deg). This half of the survey covers an area of 3069 degrees$^2$, with an average rms of 2.1 mJy beam$^{-1}$. The resulting catalogue contains a total of 80824 sources, with 16 separate spectral measurements between 100 and 230 MHz, and spectral modelling for 78$\%$ of these sources. Over this region we estimate that the catalogue is 90$\%$ complete at 32 mJy, and 70$\%$ complete at 10.5~mJy. The overall normalised source counts are found to be in good agreement with previous low-frequency surveys at similar sensitivities. Testing the performance of the new source models we measure lower residual rms values for peeled sources, particularly for extended sources, in a set of MWA Phase I data. The 2-dimensional power spectrum of these data residuals also show improvement on small angular scales -- consistent with the better angular resolution of the LoBES catalogue. We produce the first low to mid frequency radio simulation that incorporates both traditional extragalactic radio sources as well as synchrotron cosmic web emission. The FIlaments \& GAlactic RadiO (FIGARO) simulation includes ten unique \SI{4x4}{\degree} fields, incorporating active galactic nucleii (AGNs), star forming galaxies (SFGs) and synchrotron cosmic web emission out to a redshift of $z = 0.8$ and over the frequency range 100-1400 MHz. To do this, the simulation brings together a recent $100^3$ Mpc$^3$ magneto-hydrodynamic simulation (Vazza et al., 2019), calibrated to match observed radio relic population statistics, alongside updated `T-RECS' code for simulating extragalactic radio sources (Bonaldi et al., 2019). Uniquely, the AGNs and SFGs are populated and positioned in accordance with the underlying matter density of the cosmological simulation. In this way, the simulation provides an accurate understanding of the apparent morphology, angular scales, and brightness of the cosmic web as well as -- crucially -- the clustering properties of the cosmic web with respect to the embedded extragalactic radio population. We find that the synchrotron cosmic web does not closely trace the underlying mass distribution of the cosmic web, but is instead dominated by shocked shells of emission surrounding dark matter halos and resembles a large, undetected population of radio relics. We also show that, with accurate kernels, the cosmic web radio emission is clearly detectable by cross-correlation techniques and this signal is separable from the embedded extragalactic radio population. The design and development process for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope’s Low Frequency Aperture Array component was progressed during the SKA pre-construction phase by an international consortium, with the goal of meeting requirements for a critical design review. As part of the development process a full-sized prototype SKA Low ‘station’ was deployed – the Aperture Array Verification System 1 (AAVS1). We provide a system overview and describe the commissioning results of AAVS1, which is a low frequency radio telescope with 256 dual-polarisation log-periodic dipole antennas working as a phased array. A detailed system description is provided, including an in-depth overview of relevant sub-systems, ranging from hardware, firmware, software, calibration, and control sub-systems. Early commissioning results cover initial bootstrapping, array calibration, stability testing, beam-forming, and on-sky sensitivity validation. Lessons learned are presented, along with future developments.

We derive the synchrotron distribution in the Milky Way disk from HII region absorption observations over -40{\deg} < l < 40{\deg} at six frequencies of 76.2, 83.8, 91.5, 99.2, 106.9, and 114.6 MHz with the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison widefield array survey (GLEAM). We develop a new method of emissivity calculation by taking advantage of the Haslam et al., (1981) map and known spectral indices, which enable us to simultaneously derive the emissivity and the optical depth of HII regions at each frequency. We show our derived synchrotron emissivities based on 152 absorption features of HII regions using both the method previously adopted in the literature and our improved method. We derive the synchrotron emissivity from HII regions to the Galactic edge along the line of sight and, for the first time, derive the emissivity from HII regions to the Sun. These results provide direct information on the distribution of the Galactic magnetic field and cosmic-ray electrons for future modelling., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

We present new radio and optical images of the nearest radio galaxy Centaurus A and its host galaxy NGC 5128. We focus our investigation on the northern transition region, where energy is transported from the ~5 kpc (~5 arcmin) scales of the Northern Inner Lobe (NIL) to the ~30 kpc (~30 arcmin) scales of the Northern Middle Lobe (NML). Our Murchison Widefield Array observations at 154 MHz and our Parkes radio telescope observations at 2.3 GHz show diffuse radio emission connecting the NIL to the NML, in agreement with previous Australia Telescope Compact Array observations at 1.4 GHz. Comparison of these radio data with our widefield optical emission line images show the relationship between the NML radio emission and the ionised filaments that extend north from the NIL, and reveal a new ionised filament to the east, possibly associated with a galactic wind. Our deep optical images show clear evidence for a bipolar outflow from the central galaxy extending to intermediate scales, despite the non-detection of a southern radio counterpart to the NML. Thus, our observational overview of Centaurus A reveals a number of features proposed to be associated with AGN feedback mechanisms, often cited as likely to have significant effects in galaxy evolution models. We follow up on a report by Vacca et al. (2018) of 28 candidate large-scale diffuse synchrotron sources in an 8{\deg}$\times$8{\deg} area of the sky (centred at RA 5h0m0s Dec 5{\deg}48'0''). These sources were originally observed at 1.4 GHz using a combination of the single-dish Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) and archival NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data. They are in an area with nine massive galaxy clusters at z $\approx$ 0.1, and are candidates for the first detection of filaments of the synchrotron cosmic web. We attempt to verify these candidate sources with lower frequency observations at 154 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and at 887 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). We use a novel technique to calculate the surface brightness sensitivity of these instruments to show that our lower frequency observations, and in particular those by ASKAP, are ideally suited to detect large-scale, extended synchrotron emission. Precise instrumental calibration is of crucial importance to 21-cm cosmology experiments. The Murchison Widefield Array's (MWA) Phase II compact configuration offers us opportunities for both redundant calibration and sky-based calibration algorithms; using the two in tandem is a potential approach to mitigate calibration errors caused by inaccurate sky models. The MWA Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiment targets three patches of the sky (dubbed EoR0, EoR1, and EoR2) with deep observations. Previous work in \cite{Li_2018} and \cite{Wenyang_2019} studied the effect of tandem calibration on the EoR0 field and found that it yielded no significant improvement in the power spectrum over sky-based calibration alone. In this work, we apply similar techniques to the EoR1 field and find a distinct result: the improvements in the power spectrum from tandem calibration are significant. To understand this result, we analyze both the calibration solutions themselves and the effects on the power spectrum over three nights of EoR1 observations. We conclude that the presence of the bright radio galaxy Fornax A in EoR1 degrades the performance of sky-based calibration, which in turn enables redundant calibration to have a larger impact. To make a power spectrum (PS) detection of the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), one must avoid/subtract bright foreground sources. Sources such as Fornax A present a modelling challenge due to spatial structures spanning from arc seconds up to a degree. We compare modelling with multi-scale (MS) CLEAN components to 'shapelets', an alternative set of basis functions. We introduce a new image-based shapelet modelling package, SHAMFI. We also introduce a new CUDA simulation code (WODEN) to generate point source, Gaussian, and shapelet components into visibilities. We test performance by modelling a simulation of Fornax A, peeling the model from simulated visibilities, and producing a residual PS. We find the shapelet method consistently subtracts large-angular-scale emission well, even when the angular-resolution of the data is changed. We find that when increasing the angular-resolution of the data, the MS CLEAN model worsens at large angular-scales. When testing on real MWA data, the expected improvement is not seen in real data because of the other dominating systematics still present. Through further simulation we find the expected differences to be lower than obtainable through current processing pipelines. In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9+3.1. We present the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9+3.1 obtained with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray emission from this remnant. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple power-law relation. The synchrotron radio spectral index of G5.9+3.1, is estimated to be 0.42$\pm$0.03 and the integrated flux density at 1GHz to be around 2.7Jy. Furthermore, we propose that the identified point radio source, located centrally inside the SNR shell, is most probably a compact remnant of the supernova explosion. The shell-like X-ray morphology of G5.9+3.1 as revealed by XMM-Newton broadly matches the spatial distribution of the radio emission, where the radio-bright eastern and western rims are also readily detected in the X-ray while the radio-weak northern and southern rims are weak or absent in the X-ray. Extracted MOS1+MOS2+PN spectra from the whole SNR as well as the north, east, and west rims of the SNR are fit successfully with an optically thin thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium with a column density N_H~0.80x$10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and fitted temperatures spanning the range kT~0.14-0.23keV for all of the regions. The derived electron number densities n_e for the whole SNR and the rims are also roughly comparable (ranging from ~$0.20f^{-1/2}$ cm$^{-3}$ to ~$0.40f^{-1/2}$ cm$^{-3}$, where f is the volume filling factor). We also estimate the swept-up mass of the X-ray emitting plasma associated with G5.9+3.1 to be ~$46f^{-1/2}M_{\odot}$., Accepted for publication in A&A

Detection of the epoch of reionization H i signal requires a precise understanding of the intervening galaxies and AGN, both for instrumental calibration and foreground removal. We present a catalogue of 7394 extragalactic sources at 182 MHz detected in the RA = 0 field of the Murchison Widefield Array Epoch of Reionization observation programme. Motivated by unprecedented requirements for precision and reliability we develop new methods for source finding and selection. We apply machine learning methods to self-consistently classify the relative reliability of 9490 source candidates. A subset of 7466 are selected based on reliability class and signal-to-noise ratio criteria. These are statistically cross-matched to four other radio surveys using both position and flux density information. We find 7369 sources to have confident matches, including 90 partially resolved sources that split into a total of 192 sub-components. An additional 25 unmatched sources are included as new radio detections. The catalogue sources have a median spectral index of −0.85. Spectral flattening is seen towards lower frequencies with a median of −0.71 predicted at 182 MHz. The astrometric error is 7 arcsec compared to a 2.3 arcmin beam FWHM. The resulting catalogue covers ∼1400 deg² and is complete to approximately 80 mJy within half beam power. We present Murchison Widefield Array observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) 1987A between 72 and 230 MHz, representing the lowest frequency observations of the source to date. This large lever arm in frequency space constrains the properties of the circumstellar medium created by the progenitor of SNR 1987A when it was in its red supergiant phase. As of late-2013, the radio spectrum of SNR 1987A between 72 MHz and 8.64 GHz does not show any deviation from a non-thermal power-law with a spectral index of $-0.74 \pm 0.02$. This spectral index is consistent with that derived at higher frequencies, beneath 100 GHz, and with a shock in its adiabatic phase. A spectral turnover due to free-free absorption by the circumstellar medium has to occur below 72 MHz, which places upper limits on the optical depth of $\leq$ 0.1 at a reference frequency of 72 MHz, emission measure of $\lesssim$ 13,000 cm$^{-6}$ pc, and an electron density of $\lesssim$ 110 cm$^{-3}$. This upper limit on the electron density is consistent with the detection of prompt radio emission and models of the X-ray emission from the supernova. The electron density upper limit implies that some hydrodynamic simulations derived a red supergiant mass loss rate that is too high, or a wind velocity that is too low. The mass loss rate of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-6}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and wind velocity of 10 km s$^{-1}$ obtained from optical observations are consistent with our upper limits, predicting a current turnover frequency due to free-free absorption between 5 and 60 MHz., 9 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We apply two methods to estimate the 21~cm bispectrum from data taken within the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) project of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Using data acquired with the Phase II compact array allows a direct bispectrum estimate to be undertaken on the multiple redundantly-spaced triangles of antenna tiles, as well as an estimate based on data gridded to the $uv$-plane. The direct and gridded bispectrum estimators are applied to 21 hours of high-band (167--197~MHz; $z$=6.2--7.5) data from the 2016 and 2017 observing seasons. Analytic predictions for the bispectrum bias and variance for point source foregrounds are derived. We compare the output of these approaches, the foreground contribution to the signal, and future prospects for measuring the bispectra with redundant and non-redundant arrays. We find that some triangle configurations yield bispectrum estimates that are consistent with the expected noise level after 10 hours, while equilateral configurations are strongly foreground-dominated. Careful choice of triangle configurations may be made to reduce foreground bias that hinders power spectrum estimators, and the 21~cm bispectrum may be accessible in less time than the 21~cm power spectrum for some wave modes, with detections in hundreds of hours., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

This work makes available a further$2\,860~\text{deg}^2$of the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey, covering half of the accessible galactic plane, across 20 frequency bands sampling 72–231 MHz, with resolution$4\,\text{arcmin}-2\,\text{arcmin}$. Unlike previous GLEAM data releases, we used multi-scaleCLEANto better deconvolve large-scale galactic structure. For the galactic longitude ranges$345^\circ < l < 67^\circ$,$180^\circ < l < 240^\circ$, we provide a compact source catalogue of 22 037 components selected from a 60-MHz bandwidth image centred at 200 MHz, with RMS noise$\approx10-20\,\text{mJy}\,\text{beam}^{-1}$and position accuracy better than 2 arcsec. The catalogue has a completeness of 50% at${\approx}120\,\text{mJy}$, and a reliability of 99.86%. It covers galactic latitudes$1^\circ\leq|b|\leq10^\circ$towards the galactic centre and$|b|\leq10^\circ$for other regions, and is available from Vizier; images covering$|b|\leq10^\circ$for all longitudes are made available on the GLEAM Virtual Observatory (VO).server and SkyView.

We provide the first in situ measurements of antenna element (tile) beam shapes of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), a low radio-frequency interferometer and an SKA precursor. Most current MWA processing pipelines use an assumed beam shape, errors in which can cause absolute and relative flux density errors, as well as polarisation 'leakage'. This makes understanding the primary beam of paramount importance, especially for sensitive experiments such as a measurement of the 21 cm line from the epoch of reionisation (EoR). The calibration requirements for measuring the EoR 21 cm line are so extreme that tile to tile beam variations may affect our ability to make a detection. Measuring the primary beam shape from visibilities alone is challenging, as multiple instrumental, atmospheric, and astrophysical factors contribute to uncertainties in the data. Building on the methods of Neben et al. (2015), we tap directly into the receiving elements of the MWA before any digitisation or correlation of the signal. Using ORBCOMM satellite passes we are able to produce all-sky maps for 4 separate tiles in the XX polarisation. We find good agreement with the cutting-edge 'fully' embedded element (FEE) model of Sokolowski et al. (2017), and observe that the MWA beamformers consistently recreate beam shapes to within ~1dB in the reliable areas of our beam maps. We also clearly observe the effects of a missing dipole from a tile in one of our beam maps, and show that the FEE model is able to reproduce this modified beam shape. Interferometric arrays seeking to measure the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization must contend with overwhelmingly bright emission from foreground sources. Accurate recovery of the 21 cm signal will require precise calibration of the array, and several new avenues for calibration have been pursued in recent years, including methods using redundancy in the antenna configuration. The newly upgraded Phase II of Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is the first interferometer that has large numbers of redundant baselines while retaining good instantaneous UV-coverage. This array therefore provides a unique opportunity to compare redundant calibration with sky-model based algorithms. In this paper, we present the first results from comparing both calibration approaches with MWA Phase II observations. For redundant calibration, we use the package OMNICAL, and produce sky-based calibration solutions with the analysis package Fast Holographic Deconvolution (FHD). There are three principal results. (1) We report the success of OMNICAL on observations of ORBComm satellites, showing substantial agreement between redundant visibility measurements after calibration. (2) We directly compare OMNICAL calibration solutions with those from FHD, and demonstrate these two different calibration schemes give extremely similar results. (3) We explore improved calibration by combining OMNICAL and FHD. We evaluate these combined methods using power spectrum techniques developed for EoR analysis and find evidence for marginal improvements mitigating artifacts in the power spectrum. Structure imprinted in foreground extragalactic point sources by ionospheric refraction has the potential to contaminate Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) power spectra of the 21~cm emission line of neutral hydrogen. The alteration of the spatial and spectral structure of foreground measurements due to total electron content (TEC) gradients in the ionosphere create a departure from the expected sky signal. We present a general framework for understanding the signatures of ionospheric behaviour in the two-dimensional (2D) neutral hydrogen power spectrum measured by a low-frequency radio interferometer. Two primary classes of ionospheric behaviour are considered, corresponding to dominant modes observed in Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) EoR data; namely, anisotropic structured wave behaviour, and isotropic turbulence. Analytic predictions for power spectrum bias due to this contamination are computed, and compared with simulations. We then apply the ionospheric metric described in Jordan et al. (2017) to study the impact of ionospheric structure on MWA data, by dividing MWA EoR datasets into classes with good and poor ionospheric conditions, using sets of matched 30-minute observations from 2014 September. The results are compared with the analytic and simulated predictions, demonstrating the observed bias in the power spectrum when the ionosphere is active (displays coherent structures or isotropic turbulence). The analysis demonstrates that unless ionospheric activity can be quantified and corrected, active data should not be included in EoR analysis in order to avoid systematic biases in cosmological power spectra. When data are corrected with a model formed from the calibration information, bias reduces below the expected 21~cm signal level. We present the first low-frequency Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio continuum maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), using mosaics from the GaLactic Extragalactic All-Sky MWA (GLEAM) survey. In this paper, we discuss the overall radio continuum morphology between 76 and 227 MHz and compare them with neutral hydrogen maps, 1.4 GHz continuum maps and optical images. Variation of diffuse emission is noticeable across the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) but absent across the bar of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We also measure the integrated flux densities and derive the spectral indices for the MCs. A double power-law model with fixed α1 = -0.1 fit between 19.7 MHz and 8.55 GHz yields α0 = -0.66 ± 0.08 for the LMC. A power-law model yields α _{8.55 GHz}^{85.5 MHz} = -0.82± 0.03 for the SMC. The radio spectral index maps reveal distinctive flat and steep spectral indices for the H II regions and supernova remnants, respectively. We find strong correlation between H II regions and Hα emission. Using a new 150 MHz-Hα relation as a star formation rate indicator, we estimate global star formation rates of 0.068-0.161 M☉ yr-1 and 0.021-0.050 M☉ yr-1 for the LMC and SMC, respectively. We present early results from a project to measure the sky-averaged (global), redshifted $21\,$cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope. Because interferometers are not sensitive to a spatially-invariant global average, they cannot be used to detect this signal using standard techniques. However, lunar occultation of the radio sky imprints a spatial structure on the global signal, allowing us to measure the average brightness temperature of the patch of sky immediately surrounding the Moon. In this paper we present one night of Moon observations with the MWA between 72 - 230 MHz and verify our techniques to extract the background sky temperature from measurements of the Moon's flux density. We improve upon previous work using the lunar occultation technique by using a more sophisticated model for reflected `earthshine' and by employing image differencing to remove imaging artefacts. We leave the Moon's (constant) radio brightness temperature as a free parameter in our fit to the data and as a result, measure $T_{\rm{moon}} = 180 \pm 12 $ K and a Galactic synchrotron spectral index of $-2.64\pm0.14$, at the position of the Moon. Finally, we evaluate the prospects of the lunar occultation technique for a global EoR detection and map out a way forward for future work with the MWA., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We have acquired radio continuum data between 70\,MHz and 48\,GHz for a sample of 19 southern starburst galaxies at moderate redshifts ($0.067 < z < 0.227$) with the aim of separating synchrotron and free-free emission components. Using a Bayesian framework we find the radio continuum is rarely characterised well by a single power law, instead often exhibiting low frequency turnovers below 500\,MHz, steepening at mid-to-high frequencies, and a flattening at high frequencies where free-free emission begins to dominate over the synchrotron emission. These higher order curvature components may be attributed to free-free absorption across multiple regions of star formation with varying optical depths. The decomposed synchrotron and free-free emission components in our sample of galaxies form strong correlations with the total-infrared bolometric luminosities. Finally, we find that without accounting for free-free absorption with turnovers between 90 to 500\,MHz the radio-continuum at low frequency ($��< 200$\,MHz) could be overestimated by upwards of a factor of twelve if a simple power law extrapolation is used from higher frequencies. The mean synchrotron spectral index of our sample is constrained to be $��=-1.06$, which is steeper then the canonical value of $-0.8$ for normal galaxies. We suggest this may be caused by an intrinsically steeper cosmic ray distribution.

We present low-frequency spectral energy distributions of 60 known radio pulsars observed with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope. We searched the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) survey images for 200-MHz continuum radio emission at the position of all pulsars in the ATNF pulsar catalogue. For the 60 confirmed detections we have measured flux densities in 20 x 8 MHz bands between 72 and 231 MHz. We compare our results to existing measurements and show that the MWA flux densities are in good agreement., 20 pages. Accepted for publication in PASA

We present first results from radio observations with the Murchison Widefield Array seeking to constrain the power spectrum of 21 cm brightness temperature fluctuations between the redshifts of 11.6 and 17.9 (113 and 75 MHz). 3 h of observations were conducted over two nights with significantly different levels of ionospheric activity. We use these data to assess the impact of systematic errors at low frequency, including the ionosphere and radio-frequency interference, on a power spectrum measurement. We find that after the 1–3 h of integration presented here, our measurements at the Murchison Radio Observatory are not limited by RFI, even within the FM band, and that the ionosphere does not appear to affect the level of power in the modes that we expect to be sensitive to cosmology. Power spectrum detections, inconsistent with noise, due to fine spectral structure imprinted on the foregrounds by reflections in the signal-chain, occupy the spatial Fourier modes where we would otherwise be most sensitive to the cosmological signal. We are able to reduce this contamination using calibration solutions derived from autocorrelations so that we achieve an sensitivity of 104 mK on comoving scales k ≲ 0.5 h Mpc[superscript −1]. This represents the first upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum fluctuations at redshifts 12 ≲ z ≲ 18 but is still limited by calibration systematics. We present the first Murchison Widefield Array observations of the well-known cluster of galaxies Abell 3667 (A3667) between 105 and 241 MHz. A3667 is one of the best known examples of a galaxy cluster hosting a double radio relic and has been reported to contain a faint radio halo and bridge. The origins of radio halos, relics and bridges is still unclear, however galaxy cluster mergers seems to be an important factor. We clearly detect the North-West (NW) and South-East (SE) radio relics in A3667 and find an integrated flux density at 149 MHz of 28.1 +/- 1.7 and 2.4 +/- 0.1 Jy, respectively, with an average spectral index, between 120 and 1400 MHz, of -0.9 +/- 0.1 for both relics. We find evidence of a spatial variation in the spectral index across the NW relic steepening towards the centre of the cluster, which indicates an ageing electron population. These properties are consistent with higher frequency observations. We detect emission that could be associated with a radio halo and bridge. How- ever, due to the presence of poorly sampled large-scale Galactic emission and blended point sources we are unable to verify the exact nature of these features., 17 pages, 11 figures

The {\gamma}-ray data of Fermi-LAT on the giant lobes of Centaurus A are analysed together with the high frequency radio data obtained with the Planck satellite. The large {\gamma}-ray photon statistics, accumulated during seven years of observations, and the recently updated Fermi collaboration software tools allow substantial extension of the detected {\gamma}-ray emission towards higher energy, up to 30 GeV, and lower energy, down to 60 MeV. Moreover, the new {\gamma}-ray data allow us to explore the spatial features of {\gamma}-ray emission of the lobes. For the north lobe, we confirm, with higher statistical significance, our earlier finding on the extension of {\gamma}-ray emission beyond the radio image. Moreover, the new analysis reveals significant spatial variation of {\gamma}-ray spectra from both lobes. On the other hand, the Planck observations at microwave frequencies contain important information on spectra of synchrotron emission in the cutoff region, and thus allow model-independent derivation of the strength of the magnetic field and the distribution of relativistic electrons based on the combined {\gamma}-ray and radio data. The interpretation of multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the lobes within a pure leptonic model requires strong enhancement of the magnetic field at the edge of the south lobe. Alternatively, a more complex, leptonic-hadronic model of the {\gamma}-ray emission, postulating a non-negligible contribution of the {\pi}^0 -decay component at highest energies, can explain the {\gamma}-ray data with a rather homogeneous distribution of the magnetic field over the giant lobes., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables; accepted by AA, AA/2016/29069

We have studied radio haloes and relics in nine merging galaxy clusters using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). The images used for this study were obtained from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) Survey which was carried out at 5 frequencies, viz. 88, 118, 154, 188 and 215 MHz. We detect diffuse radio emission in 8 of these clusters. We have estimated the spectra of haloes and relics in these clusters over the frequency range 80-1400 MHz; the first such attempt to estimate their spectra at low frequencies. The spectra follow a power law with a mean value of $\alpha = -1.13\pm0.21$ for haloes and $\alpha = -1.2\pm0.19$ for relics where, $S \propto \nu^{\alpha}$. We reclassify two of the cluster sources as radio galaxies. The low frequency spectra are thus an independent means of confirming the nature of cluster sources. Five of the nine clusters host radio haloes. For the remaining four clusters, we place upper limits on the radio powers of possible haloes in them. These upper limits are a factor of 2-20 below those expected from the $L_{\rm X}-P_{\rm 1.4}$ relation. These limits are the lowest ever obtained and the implications of these limits to the hadronic model of halo emission are discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The current generation of experiments aiming to detect the neutral hydrogen signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) is likely to be limited by systematic effects associated with removing foreground sources from target fields. In this paper we develop a model for the compact foreground sources in one of the target fields of the MWA's EoR key science experiment: the `EoR1' field. The model is based on both the MWA's GLEAM survey and GMRT 150 MHz data from the TGSS survey, the latter providing higher angular resolution and better astrometric accuracy for compact sources than is available from the MWA alone. The model contains 5049 sources, some of which have complicated morphology in MWA data, Fornax A being the most complex. The higher resolution data show that 13% of sources that appear point-like to the MWA have complicated morphology such as double and quad structure, with a typical separation of 33~arcsec. We derive an analytic expression for the error introduced into the EoR two-dimensional power spectrum due to peeling close double sources as single point sources and show that for the measured source properties, the error in the power spectrum is confined to high $k_\bot$ modes that do not affect the overall result for the large-scale cosmological signal of interest. The brightest ten mis-modelled sources in the field contribute 90% of the power bias in the data, suggesting that it is most critical to improve the models of the brightest sources. With this hybrid model we reprocess data from the EoR1 field and show a maximum of 8% improved calibration accuracy and a factor of two reduction in residual power in $k$-space from peeling these sources. We present a search for transient and highly variable sources at low radio frequencies (150-200 MHz) that explores long timescales of 1-3 years. We conducted this search by comparing the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey Alternative Data Release 1 (TGSS ADR1) and the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey catalogues. To account for the different completeness thresholds in the individual surveys, we searched for compact GLEAM sources above a flux density limit of 100 mJy that were not present in the TGSS ADR1; and also for compact TGSS ADR1 sources above a flux density limit of 200 mJy that had no counterpart in GLEAM. From a total sample of 234 333 GLEAM sources and 275 612 TGSS ADR1 sources in the overlap region between the two surveys, there were 99658 GLEAM sources and 38 978 TGSS ADR sources that passed our flux density cutoff and compactness criteria. Analysis of these sources resulted in three candidate transient sources. Further analysis ruled out two candidates as imaging artefacts. We analyse the third candidate and show it is likely to be real, with a flux density of 182 +/- 26 mJy at 147.5 MHz. This gives a transient surface density of rho = (6.2 +/- 6) x 10-5 deg-2 . We present initial follow-up observations and discuss possible causes for this candidate. Synchrotron emission pervades the Galactic plane at low radio frequencies, originating from cosmic ray electrons interacting with the Galactic magnetic field. Using a low-frequency radio telescope, the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), we measure the free-free absorption of this Galactic synchrotron emission by intervening HII regions along the line of sight. These absorption measurements allow us to calculate the Galactic cosmic-ray electron emissivity behind and in front of 47 detected HII regions in the region $250^\circ < l < 355^\circ$, $|b| < 2^\circ$. We find that all average emissivities between the HII regions and the Galactic edge along the line of sight ($\epsilon_b$) are in the range of 0.24$\,\,\sim\,\,$0.70$\,\,$K$\,\,$pc$^{-1}$ with a mean of 0.40$\,\,$K$\,\,$pc$^{-1}$ and a variance of 0.10$\,\,$K$\,\,$pc$^{-1}$ at 88$\,\,$MHz. Our best model, the Two-circle model, divides the Galactic disk into three regions using two circles centring on the Galactic centre. It shows a high emissivity region near the Galactic centre, a low emissivity region near the Galactic edge, and a medium emissivity region between these two regions, contrary to the trend found by previous studies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Experiments that pursue detection of signals from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are relying on spectral smoothness of source spectra at low frequencies. This article empirically explores the effect of foreground spectra on EoR experiments by measuring high-resolution full-polarization spectra for the 586 brightest unresolved sources in one of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) EoR fields using 45 h of observation. A novel peeling scheme is used to subtract 2500 sources from the visibilities with ionospheric and beam corrections, resulting in the deepest, confusion-limited MWA image so far. The resulting spectra are found to be affected by instrumental effects, which limit the constraints that can be set on source-intrinsic spectral structure. The sensitivity and power-spectrum of the spectra are analysed, and it is found that the spectra of residuals are dominated by point spread function sidelobes from nearby undeconvolved sources. We release a catalogue describing the spectral parameters for each measured source.

We examine data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in the frequency range 72–102 MHz for a field of view that serendipitously contained the interstellar object 'Oumuamua on 2017 November 28. Observations took place with a time resolution of 0.5 s and a frequency resolution of 10 kHz. Based on the interesting but highly unlikely suggestion that 'Oumuamua is an interstellar spacecraft, due to some unusual orbital and morphological characteristics, we examine our data for signals that might indicate the presence of intelligent life associated with 'Oumuamua. We searched our radio data for (1) impulsive narrowband signals, (2) persistent narrowband signals, and (3) impulsive broadband signals. We found no such signals with nonterrestrial origins and make estimates of the upper limits on equivalent isotropic radiated power (EIRP) for these three cases of approximately 7 kW, 840 W, and 100 kW, respectively. These transmitter powers are well within the capabilities of human technologies, and are therefore plausible for alien civilizations. While the chances of positive detection in any given search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) experiment are vanishingly small, the characteristics of new generation telescopes such as the MWA (and, in the future, the Square Kilometre Array) make certain classes of SETI experiments easy, or even a trivial by-product of astrophysical observations. This means that the future costs of SETI experiments are very low, allowing large target lists to partially balance the low probability of a positive detection.

Detection of the cosmological neutral hydrogen signal from the Epoch of Reionization, and estimation of its basic physical parameters, is the principal scientific aim of many current low-frequency radio telescopes. Here we describe the Cosmological HI Power Spectrum Estimator (CHIPS), an algorithm developed and implemented with data from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), to compute the two-dimensional and spherically-averaged power spectrum of brightness temperature fluctuations. The principal motivations for CHIPS are the application of realistic instrumental and foreground models to form the optimal estimator, thereby maximising the likelihood of unbiased signal estimation, and allowing a full covariant understanding of the outputs. CHIPS employs an inverse-covariance weighting of the data through the maximum likelihood estimator, thereby allowing use of the full parameter space for signal estimation ("foreground suppression"). We describe the motivation for the algorithm, implementation, application to real and simulated data, and early outputs. Upon application to a set of 3 hours of data, we set a 2$\sigma$ upper limit on the EoR dimensionless power at $k=0.05$~h.Mpc$^{-1}$ of $\Delta_k^2, Comment: 34 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have compiled a catalogue of HII regions detected with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) between 72 and 231MHz. The multiple frequency bands provided by the MWA allow us identify the characteristic spectrum generated by the thermal Bremsstrahlung process in HII regions. We detect 302 HII regions between 260 < l < 340 and report on the positions, sizes, peak, integrated flux density, and spectral indices of these HII regions. By identifying the point at which HII regions transition from the optically thin to thick regime we derive the physical properties including the electron density, ionised gas mass and ionising photon flux, towards 61 HII regions. This catalogue of HII regions represents the most extensive and uniform low frequency survey of HII regions in the Galaxy to date., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

The GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA survey (GLEAM) is a new relatively low resolution, contiguous 72-231 MHz survey of the entire sky south of declination +25 deg. In this paper, we outline one approach to determine the relative contribution of system noise, classical confusion and sidelobe confusion in GLEAM images. An understanding of the noise and confusion properties of GLEAM is essential if we are to fully exploit GLEAM data and improve the design of future low-frequency surveys. We present the 21 cm power spectrum analysis approach of the Murchison Widefield Array Epoch of Reionization project. In this paper, we compare the outputs of multiple pipelines for the purpose of validating statistical limits cosmological hydrogen at redshifts between 6 and 12. Multiple, independent, data calibration and reduction pipelines are used to make power spectrum limits on a fiducial night of data. Comparing the outputs of imaging and power spectrum stages highlights differences in calibration, foreground subtraction and power spectrum calculation. The power spectra found using these different methods span a space defined by the various tradeoffs between speed, accuracy, and systematic control. Lessons learned from comparing the pipelines range from the algorithmic to the prosaically mundane; all demonstrate the many pitfalls of neglecting reproducibility. We estimate spatial gradients in the ionosphere using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and GLONASS (Russian global navigation system) observations, utilising data from multiple GPS stations in the vicinity of Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO). In previous work the ionosphere was characterised using a single-station to model the ionosphere as a single layer of fixed height and this was compared with ionospheric data derived from radio astronomy observations obtained from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Having made improvements to our data quality (via cycle slip detection and repair) and incorporating data from the GLONASS system, we now present a multi-station approach. These two developments significantly improve our modelling of the ionosphere. We also explore the effects of a variable-height model. We conclude that modelling the small-scale features in the ionosphere that have been observed with the MWA will require a much denser network of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations than is currently available at the MRO., 15 pages, 12 Figures, paper accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA)

GLEAM, the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA survey, is a survey of the entire radio sky south of declination +25 deg at frequencies between 72 and 231 MHz, made with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) using a drift scan method that makes efficient use of the MWA's very large field-of-view. We present the observation details, imaging strategies and theoretical sensitivity for GLEAM. The survey ran for two years, the first year using 40 kHz frequency resolution and 0.5 s time resolution; the second year using 10 kHz frequency resolution and 2 s time resolution. The resulting image resolution and sensitivity depends on observing frequency, sky pointing and image weighting scheme. At 154 MHz the image resolution is approximately 2.5 x 2.2/cos(DEC+26.7) arcmin with sensitivity to structures up to ~10 deg in angular size. We provide tables to calculate the expected thermal noise for GLEAM mosaics depending on pointing and frequency and discuss limitations to achieving theoretical noise in Stokes I images. We discuss challenges, and their solutions, that arise for GLEAM including ionospheric effects on source positions and linearly polarised emission, and the instrumental polarisation effects inherent to the MWA's primary beam., 17 pages, 7 Figures, 4 tables. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Precursor. The telescope is located at the Murchison Radio--astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia (WA). The MWA consists of 4096 dipoles arranged into 128 dual polarisation aperture arrays forming a connected element interferometer that cross-correlates signals from all 256 inputs. A hybrid approach to the correlation task is employed, with some processing stages being performed by bespoke hardware, based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and others by Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) housed in general purpose rack mounted servers. The correlation capability required is approximately 8 TFLOPS (Tera FLoating point Operations Per Second). The MWA has commenced operations and the correlator is generating 8.3 TB/day of correlation products, that are subsequently transferred 700 km from the MRO to Perth (WA) in real-time for storage and offline processing. The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors, with insulin resistance as a major feature. This syndrome has been variously defined, but generally consists of 3 or more of the following components: hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL, and increased abdominal circumference and/or BMI at >30 kg/m(2). The WHO criteria require the presence of insulin resistance to make the diagnosis. The current review focuses particularly on the association of the MS and the proinflammatory state as well as treatment options to prevent the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Chronic inflammation is frequently associated with the MS. Inflammatory markers that have been associated with MS include hs-CRP, TNF-alpha, fibrinogen, and IL-6, among others. The link between inflammation and the MS is not fully understood. One postulated mechanism is that these cytokines are released into the circulation by adipose tissue, stimulating hepatic CRP production. The prothrombotic molecule PAI-1 is also increased in the MS. Adiponectin, produced exclusively by adipocytes, is decreased in obesity. The association of these proinflammatory and prothrombotic markers with the MS is discussed in detail. The general goals of treatment of the MS are prevention of CHD events and diabetes if not already present. The approach to treatment of those with the MS should include lifestyle changes, including weight loss and exercise as well as appropriate pharmacological therapies. Certain medications, which may be used in persons with MS, have been shown to have beneficial effects on clinical outcome and/or anti-inflammatory effects.
