Abstract

We performed a missing-mass spectroscopy experiment of the 12C(p, d) reaction at 2.5 GeV proton energy in order to search for η′ mesic nuclei. An excitation-energy spectrum of 11C was obtained around the η′ production threshold. As no significant peak structure was observed in the spectrum, upper limits of the formation cross section of η′ mesic nuclei have been determined. Preliminary results of the experiment as well as future prospects are given.

Abstract

We report the development of a fast rotating target to produce ultrashort incoherent X-ray pulses from bremsstrahlung. These short X-ray pulses are produced in the laser-plasma interaction of a 35 fs, 1 mJ pulse of a Ti:Sa laser of 1 kHz repetition rate, with a solid metallic target. In this paper, we report our developments to improve the stability of this micron size source of ultrashort X-rays. As the Rayleigh length is very small (<15 micron), wobbling of the rotatory stage can reduce the intensity on target and change the characteristics of the source. We describe the methods we have developed to measure and adjust the stability of the focus on target. These advances are important for the development of sources with high average power and good stability. The X-ray source has a broad Maxwellian-like distribution with temperatures of around 10 - 40 KeV and could be used for advanced X-ray imaging such as absorption or phase contrast tomography., Comment: Conference proceeding

Abstract

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at $T<1$\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

Abstract

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible., This work received support from BMBF (05P19RFFN1, 05P15RDFN1, 05P19RDFN1) and HIC for FAIR. Abstract

Studies with different bi-frustum CsI(TI) crystal samples from several providers, coupled to large area avalanche photodiodes (Hamamatsu S8664-1010 2CH), specifically developed for this project, were performed as part of the R&D program for the design of the [R.sup.3]B calorimeter (CALIFA). Particular attention is given to the energy resolution optimization for CsI(TI) crystal samples with realistic dimensions. The results obtained with Large Area Avalanche Photo-Diode (LAAPD) are very promising and suggest CsI(TI) as a suitable candidate for the Barrel part of the calorimeter. Abstract

Studies with different CsI(T1) crystals coupled to avalanche photodiodes were performed in the frame of the R+D programme for the design of the R3B calorimeter (CALIFA [1]). The study of the energy resolution has been performed for crystals with lengths varying from 1 to 10 cm and square section (1 x 1 [cm.sup.2] ), attending to different optimization of parameters (i.e., crystal wrapping, optical coupling to the avalanche photodiode and the electronic chain). The obtained results with Avalanche Photo-Diodes are very promising and suggest CsI(T1) as a suitable candidate for at least part of the calorimeter. Abstract

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Abstract

In recent years, laser-driven accelerators have emerged as a promising technology for the development of compact and cost-effective sources of high-energy particles and radiation. Here, we introduce our research programme at the Laser Laboratory for Acceleration and Applications, which focusses on high-power laser systems, development of high-repetition rate targetry, and biomedical applications of laser-based accelerators. Our recent results include the generation of high-energy proton and ion beams through laser-plasma acceleration, which have potential applications in materials activation for medical imaging. We have also investigated the feasibility of using laser-driven X-rays and ion beams for radiobiological research, including FLASH therapy and hadron therapy.

Abstract

Industrial quality applications of high-power lasers working at high repetition rates, including laserdriven particle acceleration, will require laser systems capable of operating in a stable and prolonged manner. Several factors can affect this stability, including the environment conditions, such as temperature or humidity, and the progressive heating of the optical components involved. Here we report on the evolution of the main laser parameters for a 45TW system operating at 10 Hz, showing that a significant change in the wavefront and direction of propagation, even when the laser energy remains sufficiently constant. These results highlight the importance for future laser systems to integrate closed-loop beam tracking diagnostics that can correct the temporal evolution.

We present experimental results on the electromagnetic excitation of neutron-rich nickel isotopes, making use of the R3B-LAND setup at GSI. Exotic beams were produced at approximately 500 MeV/u and their reactions were studied in inverse kinematics. Integral cross sections for 58Ni are discussed and compared to previous data, providing a validation of our experimental method. The E1 excitation-energy distribution of the unstable 68Ni is presented as well, showing an excess in cross section in the 1n decay channel when compared only with a typical Giant Dipole Resonance.
