Abstract

The lived experience of being LGBT+ and an Aboriginal person was a major focus of the mixed methods Breaking the Silence research project led by Aboriginal LGBT+ researchers. Aboriginal LGBT+ participants were invited to respond to a survey that canvassed how they were included and accepted within their own families, on social media, dating apps and the wider community. The analysis and discussion of the findings from the survey examine the issues of discrimination, racism, homophobia and what belonging to a community means for intersectional identities. The findings show that while participants do experience microaggressions and queer-phobia, they also describe agency and positive experiences. The question is how these instances of resistance and disruption can be enabled to proliferate and (if appropriate) be supported collectively, to enable Aboriginal LGBT+ individuals to experience a sense of pride and belonging to communities at times and in spaces of their own choosing. Abstract

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ peoples face an elevated risk for poor health and social-emotional wellbeing, suggesting that this patient group are likely to attend health and community services. However, the current practices of those who deliver care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ peoples are unknown. Utilising mixed methods (survey; n = 197; focus groups and interviews; n = 56), we explored the current practices, confidence, knowledge, and training needs for working with Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ clients among Western Australian health and community service workers. Participants were predominately from the mental health and social-emotional wellbeing care sector. One-third of survey participants indicated that it was likely Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ peoples accessed their service. On average, participants reported high confidence and knowledge in working with Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ clients. Qualitative data indicated that staff struggled to accommodate what they understood to be the needs of clients who were both Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and LGBTIQ+, despite a willingness to 'get it right'. Abstract

The ‘Breaking the Silence’ research project is one of the first to focus on the unique experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ people living in Western Australia. The report presents the first phase of a twopart research project that explores how a range of health, social support and education organisations respond to the needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, living in Western Australia and identifying as LGBTIQ+. This report presents the findings of focus groups, interviews and surveys with staff employed within a range of organisations that work closely with Aboriginal and/or LGBTIQ+ individuals. The discussion explores the extent to which diverse health, social and emotional wellbeing, education and community services meet the needs of participants, how staff working in these organisations are supported and what else is needed to provide effective and responsive services for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients who also identify as LGBTIQ+. Abstract

The ‘Breaking the Silence’ research project is one of the first to focus on the unique experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ people living in Western Australia. Research focusing on the intersection of Indigeneity and gender/sexual diversity is severely lacking in Australia. This is the first survey to comprehensively capture the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Western Australians. Previously, major research pertaining to LGBTIQ+ Australians rarely just focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander same sex attracted or gender variant individuals (Bonson, 2017; Dudgeon, et. al., 2017; Growing Up Queer, 2014; Hill, et. al., 2021; Uink, et. al., 2020; Whitton, et. al, 2015). This summary report presents the key findings of a state-wide survey completed by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, living in Western Australia and identifying as LGBTIQ+. Findings about discrimination, homophobia and the ways in which participants are included and accepted within their own families and the wider community are presented. The report also provides a focus on the positive aspects of participants’ lives; including how they experience pride and inclusion and a sense of belonging to their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or LGBTIQ+ communities. This summary report has important information for organisations that provide health and social support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who identify as LGBTIQ+, including the extent to which diverse health, social and emotional wellbeing; education and community services meet the needs of participants.This report also includes a section describing how the findings from the community compare and contrast with those of workers in a range of health, social support and education services from the first phase of the study. Abstract

The stand alone suburban dwelling is no longer suitable for our steadily growing population, changing urban demographics, lifestyle preferences and the rising economic and ecological cost of excessive commuting. The push toward the intensification of our cities presents an opportunity to increase current supply of affordable housing. Therefore, higher density, inner city living is set to become a common typology within main centres throughout New Zealand. Many people are looking toward the purchase of multi-unit properties – which have traditionally been reserved for renters – as an affordable housing option to compensate for rising home ownership costs of the stand alone dwelling. This project looks into the redevelopment of a brownfield site within the inner city suburb of Morningside in Auckland. The objective here is to produce a mixed-use, medium-density housing scheme in which affordability plays a key role. Through research it has become clear that housing affordability is measurable when striving toward the inclusion of sustainability features. By lowering construction costs through building re-use and recycling plus the incorporation of energy efficient strategies and water management solutions the occupants are ensured to benefit from a significantly reduced running cost of their home. Quality design, security, privacy, and closeness to amenities all impact on peoples’ willingness to accept dense living environments. Each of these issues directly influence people’s acceptance of such developments. If people are satisfied with their living environment then they will take pride in it and, consequently, it will meet the general criteria for social sustainability. From research it has become clear that questions of sustainability, both environmental and social, must be considered as not only equally important factors, but also mutually supporting when seeking solutions regarding the issues of housing affordability. This project has extensively explored and investigated synergies between affordability and sustainability in the medium of architectural design.
