The Amazon Dense Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) Meteorological Network ((ADGMN) provides high spatiotemporal resolution, all-weather precipitable water vapor for studying the evolution of continental tropical and sea-breeze convective regimes of Amazonia. The ADGMN campaign consisted of two experiments: a 6-week campaign in and around Belem, which coincided with the Cloud Processes of the Main Precipitation Systems in Brazil: A Contribution to Cloud-Resolving Modeling and to the Global Precipitation Measurement (CHUVA) and a 1-yr campaign in and around Manaus. The Belem network was composed of 15 GNSS/meteorological stations that provided high-frequency (5 min) PWV data as well as surface meteorological variables For the 6-week duration of the Belem experiment, days were categorized as convective (22 days) or nonconvective (19 days) based solely on a minimum cloud-top temperature of 240 K or below over the central portion of the network and a report of precipitation at at least one site during the afternoon or evening. The Manaus network commenced in April 2011 with 12 GNSS meteorological stations. Local circulations in Manaus driven by anthropogenic deforestation have, in particular, received attention.

©2015. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. Campaign GPS data collected from 2002 to 2014 result in 41 new site velocities from the San Bernardino Mountains and vicinity. We combined these velocities with 93 continuous GPS velocities and 216 published velocities to obtain a velocity profile across the Pacific-North America plate boundary through the San Bernardino Mountains. We modeled the plate boundary-parallel, horizontal deformation with 5-14 parallel and one obliquely oriented screw dislocations within an elastic half-space. Our rate for the San Bernardino strand of the San Andreas Fault (6.5±3.6mm/yr) is consistent with recently published latest Quaternary rates at the 95% confidence level and is slower than our rate for the San Jacinto Fault (14.1±2.9mm/yr). Our modeled rate for all faults of the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ) combined (15.7±2.9mm/yr) is faster than the summed latest Quaternary rates for these faults, even when an estimate of permanent, off-fault deformation is included. The rate discrepancy is concentrated on faults near the 1992 Landers and 1999 Hector Mine earthquakes; the geodetic and geologic rates agree within uncertainties for other faults within the ECSZ. Coupled with the observation that postearthquake deformation is faster than the pre-1992 deformation, this suggests that the ECSZ geodetic-geologic rate discrepancy is directly related to the timing and location of these earthquakes and is likely the result of viscoelastic deformation in the mantle that varies over the timescale of an earthquake cycle, rather than a redistribution of plate boundary slip at a timescale of multiple earthquake cycles or longer.

Abstract Background In patients with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), subcutaneous (sc) interferon (IFN)β-1a and IFNβ-1b have been shown to reduce relapse rates. A formulation of IFNβ-1a has been produced without fetal bovine serum and without human serum albumin as an excipient (not currently approved for use in the US). The objectives of this study were to evaluate tolerability, injection-site redness, subject-reported satisfaction with therapy, and clinical safety and efficacy of the serum-free formulation of IFNβ-1a versus IFNβ-1b in IFNβ-treatment-naïve patients with RRMS. The objectives of the extension phase were to evaluate long-term safety and tolerability of IFNβ-1a. Methods This randomized, parallel-group, open-label study was conducted at 27 clinical sites in the US. Eligible patients aged 18–60 years were randomized to receive either IFNβ-1a, titrated to 44 μg sc three times weekly (tiw) (n = 65), or IFNβ-1b, titrated to 250 μg sc every other day (n = 64) over 12 weeks. Following this, all patients received IFNβ-1a 44 μg tiw for 82–112 weeks. Primary endpoint was mean change in patient-reported pain, as assessed by visual analog scale (VAS) diary pain score (from 0 mm [no pain] to 100 mm [worst possible pain]) at the injection site, from pre-injection to 30 min post-injection over the first 21 full-dose injections. Secondary assessments included proportion of patients pain-free as recorded by VAS diary and the Short-Form McGill Pain questionnaire VAS. Results A total of 129 patients were included in the intent-to-treat analysis. Mean (standard deviation) change in VAS diary pain score was not significantly different between groups, although numerically lower with IFNβ-1a versus IFNβ-1b from pre-injection to immediately post-injection (1.46 [2.93] vs. 4.63 [10.57] mm), 10 min post-injection (0.70 [1.89] vs. 1.89 [5.75] mm), and 30 min post-injection (0.67 [2.32] vs. 1.14 [4.94] mm). Proportion of patients pain-free at all time periods post-injection was also not significantly different between groups. Adverse events were consistent with the known safety profiles of these treatments. Conclusions In IFNβ-treatment-naïve patients with RRMS, both the serum-free formulation of IFNβ-1a and IFNβ-1b treatments were generally accompanied by low-level injection-site pain and were well tolerated. Abstract Three young grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) were presented separately for fracture repair to the veterinary teaching hospital of University College Dublin. The seals were premedicated with a combination of pethidine, midazolam and atropine; anaesthesia was induced with propofol via the front flipper vein and maintained with sevoflurane or isoflurane in oxygen. One of the seals did not breathe spontaneously after anaesthesia; a cardiac arrest, resulting in death, occurred after several hours of mechanical ventilation. Post-mortem examination revealed a severe lungworm infestation and parasitic pneumonia in this animal. The two other seals recovered uneventfully from anaesthesia.

Abstract Background Although the biosynthetic pathways for anthocyanins and their regulation have been well studied, the mechanism of anthocyanin accumulation in the cell is still poorly understood. Different models have been proposed to explain the transport of anthocyanins from biosynthetic sites to the central vacuole, but cellular and subcellular information is still lacking for reconciliation of different lines of evidence in various anthocyanin sequestration studies. Here, we used light and electron microscopy to investigate the structures and the formation of anthocyanic vacuolar inclusions (AVIs) in lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) petals. Results AVIs in the epidermal cells of different regions of the petal were investigated. Three different forms of AVIs were observed: vesicle-like, rod-like and irregular shaped. In all cases, EM examinations showed no membrane encompassing the AVI. Instead, the AVI itself consisted of membranous and thread structures throughout. Light and EM microscopy analyses demonstrated that anthocyanins accumulated as vesicle-like bodies in the cytoplasm, which themselves were contained in prevacuolar compartments (PVCs). The vesicle-like bodies seemed to be transported into the central vacuole through the merging of the PVCs and the central vacuole in the epidermal cells. These anthocyanin-containing vesicle-like bodies were subsequently ruptured to form threads in the vacuole. The ultimate irregular AVIs in the cells possessed a very condensed inner and relatively loose outer structure. Conclusion Our results strongly suggest the existence of mass transport for anthocyanins from biosynthetic sites in the cytoplasm to the central vacuole. Anthocyanin-containing PVCs are important intracellular vesicles during the anthocyanin sequestration to the central vacuole and these specific PVCs are likely derived directly from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in a similar manner to the transport vesicles of vacuolar storage proteins. The membrane-like and thread structures of AVIs point to the involvement of intravacuolar membranes and/or anthocyanin intermolecular association in the central vacuole.

Using a combination of liquid-phase X-ray spectroscopy experiments and small-scale calculations we have gained new insights into the speciation of halozincate anions in ionic liquids (ILs). Both core and valence X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments were performed directly on the liquid-phase ILs, supplemented by Zn 1s X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on both 1- and 2- halozincate anions, in both a generalised solvation model SMD (Solvation Model based on Density) and the gas phase, to give XP spectra and total energy differences; time-dependent DFT was used to calculate XANES spectra. Speciation judgements were made using a combination of the shape and width of the experimental spectra, and visual matches to the calculated spectra. For 2- halozincate anions, excellent matches were found between the experimental and calculated XP spectra, clearly showing that only 2- halozincate anions were present at all zinc halide mole fractions, x , studied. At specific values of x (0.33, 0.50, 0.60) only one halozincate anion was present; equilibria of different halozincate anions at those values of x were not observed. All findings show that chlorozincate anion and bromozincate anion speciation matched at the same x . Based on the results, predictions are made of the halozincate anion speciation for all values of x up to 0.67. Caution is advised when using differences in calculated total energies obtained from DFT to judge halozincate anion speciation, even when the SMD was employed, as predictions based on total energy differences did not always match the findings from the experimental and calculated spectra. Our findings clearly establish that the combination of high-quality experimental data from multiple spectroscopies and a wide range of calculated structures are essential to have high confidence in halozincate anion speciation identification.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ab initio calculations show that fully alkylated onium cation electronic structure can be tuned using both the alkyl chains and the central onium atom. The key for tuning the central onium atom is methyl versus longer alkyl chains, allowing selection of the optimum cation for a wide range of applications, including catalysis and biocides.

Introduction: The use of implantable antibiotic beads has become a frequent treatment modality for the management of surgical site infections in human and veterinary medicine. The objective of this study is to describe the elution kinetics of five antibiotics from a commercially available calcium sulfate antibiotic delivery kit. A secondary goal was to compare elution concentrations with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for commonly encountered bacteria from the University of Florida's veterinary microbiology laboratory database., Methods: Calcium sulfate powder was combined with amikacin, cefazolin, gentamicin, ampicillin/sulbactam, and meropenem. Triplicates of three antibiotic-loaded beads were immersed in 5 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and kept at 37°C under constant agitation. Antibiotic-conditioned PBS was sampled at 14 time points from 1-h to 30 days and analyzed by liquid chromatography to determine the antibiotic concentration., Results: All beads eluted concentrations of antibiotics for the 30-day sampling period, except for ampicillin/sulbactam, with the most antibiotics being eluted within the first week. The concentration of antibiotics within the eluent within the first 3-9 days (3- and 5-mm beads, respectively) was greater than the MIC of common isolates. The 5 mm bead samples were superior in maintaining higher concentrations for a longer period, compared to the 3-mm beads., Discussion: CSH beads eluted antibiotics over the 30-day course of the study. Most of the antibiotic elution occurred within the first week and was maintained above the MIC of commonly encountered isolates. This study explores the effect of molecular permanent dipole moment (PDM) on aggregation of guest molecules in phosphorescent host-guest organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Through a combination of photoluminescence measurements, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, and an Ising model based physical vapor-deposition simulation, we show that higher PDM of tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) guest can actually lead to a reduced aggregation relative to tris[bis[2-(2-pyridinyl-N)phenyl-C] (acetylacetonato)iridium(III) when doped into a non-polar host 1,3,5-tris(carbazol-9-yl)benzene. This study further explores the effect of host polarity by using a polar host 3',5'-di(carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarbonitrile, and it is shown that the polar host leads to reduced guest aggregation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of molecular PDM on OLED material efficiency and stability, providing insights for optimizing phosphorescent OLED materials., (© 2024 Author(s). Using a combination of experiments and calculations, we have gained new insights into the nature of anion-cation interactions in ionic liquids (ILs). An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-derived anion-dependent electrostatic interaction strength scale, determined using XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations, is presented here for 39 different anions, with at least 18 new anions included. Linear correlations of experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations with (a) calculated core binding energies (ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were used to generate high-quality model IL structures followed by single-point density functional theory (DFT) to obtain calculated core binding energies), (b) experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL anions, and (c) other anion-dependent interaction strength scales led to three main conclusions. First, the effect of different anions on the cation can be related to ground-state interactions. Second, the variations of anion-dependent interactions with the identity of the anion are best rationalized in terms of electrostatic interactions and not occupied valence state/unoccupied valence state interactions or polarizability-driven interactions. Therefore, the XPS-derived anion-dependent interaction strength scale can be explained using a simple electrostatic model based on electrostatic site potentials. Third, anion-probe interactions, irrespective of the identity of the probe, are primarily electrostatic, meaning that our electrostatic interaction strength scale captures some inherent, intrinsic property of anions independent of the probe used to measure the interaction strength scale.

Objective: Describe lateral ear canal resection and bulla osteotomy with marsupialization (LECARBOM) in rabbits with otitis media (OM), and report outcomes, complications, bacteria cultured from middle ears, and their antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results., Study Design: Retrospective clinical case series; single referral hospital., Animals: Forty-two rabbits with naturally occurring OM., Methods: Medical records (2011-2021) of rabbits with CT-confirmed OM undergoing surgery were reviewed for outcomes, complications, bacteria cultured from middle ears, and AST., Results: Surgery was performed on 48 ears, and outcomes determined 21 days postoperatively. All rabbits survived the procedure. Otitis externa resolved in all lop-eared rabbits. Of 29 ears with OM-associated head tilt, eight (28%) resolved, nine (31%) improved, seven (24%) remained unchanged and five (17%) worsened. Outcome was not associated with head tilt duration nor OM severity. Postoperative complications occurred in 12 (25%) cases, seven of which had wound margin dehiscence that healed by 21 days. The most frequent bacteria isolated were Pasteurella multocida (16%), Bordetella bronchiseptica (14%) and Staphylococcus aureus (14%). Bacteria were sensitive to azithromycin, marbofloxacin or enrofloxacin and resistant to penicillin., Conclusion: LECARBOM is a well-tolerated surgical procedure to treat OM. It also improved or stabilized 83% of cases with head tilt and resolved all cases with otitis externa., Clinical Significance: LECARBOM with administration of an AST-sensitive antibiotic, or azithromycin when no AST is performed, should be effective in rabbits with OM. Postsurgically, it resolves or alleviates most secondary conditions such as otitis externa, head tilt and facial nerve paralysis., (© 2023 The Authors. In this work, we develop a machine learning-based method to characterize intracluster concentration (ρ c ), background concentration (ρ b ), clustering radius (r̄), and radius dispersity (δr) in simulated atom probe tomography data using multiple spatial statistics summary functions to train a Bayesian regularized neural network. We build upon previous work that utilized Ripley's K-function by incorporating additional features from nearest-neighbor spatial statistics summary functions to better characterize concentration-based metrics. The addition of nearest-neighbor based features allows for highly accurate estimates of ρ c and ρ b , both with 90% of the predictions within 4.0% of the real value; the root-mean-square errors are reduced by 81.5% and 92.8% from predictions using only K-function based features, respectively. Introduction: The role of foundation year-1 (FY1) doctors during the out-of-hours (OOHs) period was explored, identifying areas to improve their training., Methods: Data were retrospectively collected for 1 year of foundation training (2018-2019) from an electronic task system between 17:00 to 08:00, Monday to Sunday, in a 798-bed teaching hospital in Exeter, UK., Results: Thirty-two thousand, two hundred and sixty OOHs jobs were requested with 21,816 (67.6%) assigned to FY1 doctors and the clinical site practitioner. Jobs were distributed with 12,044 (55.2%) for FY1 medicine, 5,739 (26.3%) for FY1 surgery and 4,033 (18.5%) for the clinical site practitioner. The three most common jobs requested were prescribing (31.1%), patient reviews (17.9%), and interpreting or taking bloods (11.6%). Procedural jobs accounted for 22.2% of all jobs. Prescribing and patient review jobs were further categorised into commonly encountered themes., Conclusion: This study describes the nature of jobs performed by FY1 doctors working OOHs and identifies three areas to focus foundation doctor training. First, improving the preparedness of new graduates as guided by commonly identified jobs. Second, monitoring the appropriateness of performed jobs. Palladium and palladium-platinum foils were analysed using temperature-programmed near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TP-NAP-XPS) under methane oxidation conditions. Oxidation of palladium is inhibited by the presence of water, and in oxygen-poor environments. Pt addition further inhibits oxidation of palladium across all reaction conditions, preserving metallic palladium to higher temperatures. Bimetallic foils underwent significant restructuring under reaction conditions, with platinum preferentially migrating to the bulk under select conditions.

Valence electronic structure is crucial for understanding and predicting reactivity. Valence non-resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NRXPS) provides a direct method for probing the overall valence electronic structure. However, it is often difficult to separate the varying contributions to NRXPS; for example, contributions of solutes in solvents or functional groups in complex molecules. In this work we show that valence resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (RXPS) is a vital tool for obtaining atomic contributions to valence states. We combine RXPS with NRXPS and density functional theory calculations to demonstrate the validity of using RXPS to identify atomic contributions for a range of solutes (both neutral and ionic) and solvents (both molecular solvents and ionic liquids). Furthermore, the one-electron picture of RXPS holds for all of the closed shell molecules/ions studied, although the situation for an open-shell metal complex is more complicated. The factors needed to obtain a strong RXPS signal are investigated in order to predict the types of systems RXPS will work best for; a balance of element electronegativity and bonding type is found to be important. Additionally, the dependence of RXPS spectra on both varying solvation environment and varying local-covalent bonding is probed. We find that RXPS is a promising fingerprint method for identifying species in solution, due to the spectral shape having a strong dependence on local-covalency but a weak dependence on the solvation environment.

Ionic liquid (IL) valence electronic structure provides key descriptors for understanding and predicting IL properties. The ionisation energies of 60 ILs are measured and the most readily ionised valence state of each IL (the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) is identified using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron resonant XPS. A structurally diverse range of cations and anions were studied. The cation gave rise to the HOMO for nine of the 60 ILs presented here, meaning it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion. The influence of the cation on the anion electronic structure (and vice versa ) were established; the electrostatic effects are well understood and demonstrated to be consistently predictable. We used this knowledge to make predictions of both ionisation energy and HOMO identity for a further 516 ILs, providing a very valuable dataset for benchmarking electronic structure calculations and enabling the development of models linking experimental valence electronic structure descriptors to other IL properties, e.g. electrochemical stability. Furthermore, we provide design rules for the prediction of the electronic structure of ILs.

Objective: To assess the feasibility of a novel technique involving a vessel and tissue-sealing device (VTSD) for ovariectomy in chickens to evaluate the potential application of the procedure to other avian species., Animals: 20 domestic laying hens ( Gallus domesticus ), of which 10 were immature (< 4 months old) and 10 were adults (> 18 months old)., Procedures: Ovariectomy was performed with a VTSD through a left lateral celiotomy. Birds were allowed to recover for 14 days after the procedure and then were euthanized for necropsy. A board-certified veterinary pathologist performed complete necropsies, with particular attention to identifying any remaining ovarian tissue., Results: All birds survived the procedure. For the mature and juvenile birds, the mean ± SD durations of anesthesia (interval from intubation to extubation) were 67.2 ± 7.6 minutes and 50.5 ± 5.1 minutes, respectively, and mean durations of surgery were 45.3 ± 8.5 minutes and 31.6 ± 5.1 minutes, respectively. Three birds had severe hemorrhage during ovariectomy. At necropsy, ovarian tissue was present grossly in 2 mature birds and histologically in 6 additional birds (2 mature and 4 juvenile birds), indicating incomplete excision in 8 (40%) birds., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Results indicated that the evaluated VTSD can be used to successfully perform ovariectomies in both juvenile and mature chickens, although the procedure was associated with major hemorrhage and incomplete excision of ovarian tissue in some cases. Use of this VTSD for ovariectomy in birds of other species, particularly birds with reproductive tract disease, should be investigated.

Introduction Inappropriate fluid prescriptions result in excess morbidity and mortality in surgical patients. The majority of prescriptions are done by foundation year one doctors (FY1s) despite repeated evidence of poor knowledge and prescription habits among them when it comes to prescribing fluids. Materials and methods This was a retrospective observational study conducted at a 798-bed district general teaching hospital. Data for one year from an out-of-hours (OOHs) electronic task record system was extracted. An analysis was performed on all surgical 'Fluid Reviews' jobs recorded in the period from August 1, 2018, to August 7, 2019. Results During the 371-day study period, 1,283 requests for fluid reviews were made. Of these, 1,228 (95.7%) were assigned to the FY1 and 1,185 (92.3%) were requested by nurses. There was a mean of 3.5 ±2.1 requests per day. A bimodal distribution of requests was noted with peaks at 1900 and 2400. There was no discernible variation between different days of the week. Conclusion Fluid reviews were most frequently requested by nursing staff at times that coincide with their handover and the commencement of a new fluid chart at midnight. Reducing the number of inappropriate requests for fluid reviews may reduce the opportunity for inappropriate fluid prescribing. Improvements could be achieved through interventions in the ward rounds and by encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to education on fluid prescribing. Objective: To determine the prevalence of neoplasia detected on liver biopsy obtained at the time of splenectomy in dogs with splenic masses., Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of medical records of dogs with splenic masses from which liver biopsies were taken following splenectomy., Results: Malignant splenic neoplasia was detected in 50 of 113 (44.2%) of the dogs undergoing splenectomy. Neoplastic liver disease was detected on biopsy from 1 of 40 (2.5%) dogs with a grossly normal liver and from 20 of 69 (28.9%) dogs with a grossly abnormal liver. Dogs with a grossly abnormal liver had a ~ 16 times (95% CI: 2.5-170) higher chance of being diagnosed with liver neoplasia on biopsy. Haemoabdomen was also associated with an increased likelihood of liver neoplasia on biopsy at the time of splenectomy., Clinical Significance: A liver biopsy taken from grossly normal liver is a low-yield diagnostic test but liver biopsy is recommended following splenectomy if the liver appears abnormal at surgery., (© 2020 British Small Animal Veterinary Association.)

Understanding the interaction of amino acids with metal surfaces is essential for the rational design of chiral modifiers able to confer enantioselectivity to metal catalysts. Here, we present an investigation of the adsorption of aspartic acid (Asp) on the Ni{100} surface, using a combination of synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, and density functional theory simulations. Based on the combined analysis of the experimental and simulated data, we can identify the dominant mode of adsorption as a pentadentate configuration with three O atoms at the bridge sites of the surfaces, and the remaining oxygen atom and the amino nitrogen are located on atop sites. From temperature-programmed XPS measurements, it was found that Asp starts decomposing above 400 K, which is significantly higher than typical decomposition temperatures of smaller organic molecules on Ni surfaces. Our results offer valuable insights into understanding the role of Asp as a chiral modifier of nickel catalyst surfaces in enantioselective hydrogenation reactions.

A mixed-breed dog with a history of diabetes mellitus underwent surgical removal of multiple colonic adenocarcinomas. The dog acutely developed electrocardiographic changes compatible with hyperkalemia during manipulation of the tumors, which was confirmed and treated. Although it was not possible to confirm clinical tumor lysis syndrome in this dog, the hyperkalemia and resultant arrhythmia that occurred during tumor manipulation were suggestive of acute tumor lysis syndrome. Key clinical message: Hyperkalemia is a serious anesthetic and intraoperative complication that should be considered in dogs undergoing solid tumor resection due to the potential risk of developing acute tumor lysis syndrome. Diabetic patients may also be at increased risk of developing hyperkalemia. Problem: Little is known about how parents perceive their role or the role of health care providers (HCPs) during end-of-life decision making (EOL DM) in the context of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU)., Eligibility Criteria: The authors searched CINAHL, PubMed, Ovid Medline, Web of Science, Social Science Database, PsycINFO, and Google scholar for English language studies performed in the United States related to parental perception of parental or HCP roles in EOL DM in the PICU since 2008., Sample: Eleven studies of parents and health care providers (HCPs) of critically ill children in the PICU and/or receiving inpatient pediatric palliative care, and bereaved parents of PICU patients., Results: Most parents reported belief that EOL DM is within the domain of parental role, a minority felt it was a physician's responsibility. Parental EOL DM is rooted more firmly in emotion and perception and a desire to be a 'good parent' to a child at EOL in the way they see fit than HCP recommendations or 'medical facts'. Parents need HCPs to treat them as allies, communicate well, and be trustworthy., Conclusions: Role conflict may exist between parents and HCPs who are prioritizing different attributes of the parental role. The role of the nurse in support of parental role in the PICU is not well-elucidated in the extant literature., Implications: Future research should focus on what parents need from HCPs, especially nurses, to support their parental role, and factors that facilitate the development of trust and good communication., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of application of an alcohol-based antiseptic (80% ethyl alcohol) hand rub (ABAHR) with that of a 2% chlorhexidine gluconate scrub (CGS2) for immediate reduction of the bacterial population on the skin of dogs. ANIMALS 50 client-owned dogs with no evidence of skin disease. PROCEDURES On each dog, 2 areas of hair on the ventral aspect of the abdomen were clipped with a No. 40 blade and cleared of debris. A direct contact plate holding tryptic soy agar with polysorbate 80 and lecithin was gently pressed (for 2 seconds) on each skin site (preapplication sample). The CGS2 and ABAHR were each aseptically applied to 1 skin site on each dog. A direct contact plate was subsequently applied to each site in a similar manner (postapplication sample). All plates were cultured, and bacterial isolates were identified and quantified by the number of CFUs per plate. RESULTS Application of the CGS2 and ABAHR significantly decreased skin bacterial colony counts, compared with findings for preapplication samples. The number of CFUs per plate or postapplication percentage reduction in CFUs per plate did not differ between treatments. There were no adverse skin reactions associated with either application. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that applications of ABAHR and CGS2 were equally effective at immediately reducing the bacterial population on the skin of dogs, and there was no significant difference in percentage reduction in colony counts between the 2 applications.

The growth and reactive dewetting of ultrathin films of iron oxides supported on Re(0001) surfaces have been imaged in situ in real time. Initial growth forms a nonmagnetic stable FeO (wüstite like) layer in a commensurate network upon which high aspect ratio nanowires of several microns in length but less than 40 nm in width can be fabricated. The nanowires are closely aligned with the substrate crystallography and imaging by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that each contain a single magnetic domain. The driving force for dewetting appears to be the minimization of strain energy of the Fe 3 O 4 crystallites and follows the Tersoff and Tromp model in which strain is minimized at constant height by extending in one epitaxially matched direction. Such wires are promising in spintronic applications and we predict that the growth will also occur on other hexagonal substrates.

Earliness of flowering and maturity are important traits in spring Brassica napus canola-whether grown under long- or short-day condition. By use of a spring B. napus mapping population carrying the genome content of B. oleracea and testing this population under 10 to 18 h photoperiod and 18 to 20 0C (day) temperature conditions, we identified a major QTL on the chromosome C1 affecting flowering time without being influenced by photoperiod and temperature, and a major QTL on C9 affecting flowering time under a short photoperiod (10 h); in both cases, the QTL alleles reducing the number of days to flowering in B. napus were introgressed from the late flowering species B. oleracea. Additive effect of the C1 QTL allele at 14 to18 h photoperiod was 1.1 to 2.9 days; however, the same QTL allele exerted an additive effect of 6.2 days at 10 h photoperiod. Additive effect of the C9 QTL at 10 h photoperiod was 2.8 days. These two QTL also showed significant interaction in the control of flowering only under a short-day (10 h photoperiod) condition with an effect of 2.3 days. A few additional QTL were also detected on the chromosomes C2 and C8; however, none of these QTL could be detected under all photoperiod and temperature conditions. BLASTn search identified several putative flowering time genes on the chromosomes C1 and C9 and located the physical position of the QTL markers in the Brassica genome; however, only a few of these genes were found within the QTL region. Thus, the molecular markers and the genomic regions identified in this research could potentially be used in breeding for the development of early flowering photoinsensitive B. napus canola cultivars, as well as for identification of candidate genes involved in flowering time variation and photosensitivity.

The low costs of array-synthesized oligonucleotide libraries are empowering rapid advances in quantitative and synthetic biology. However, high synthesis error rates, uneven representation, and lack of access to individual oligonucleotides limit the true potential of these libraries. We have developed a cost-effective method called Recombinase Directed Indexing (REDI), which involves integration of a complex library into yeast, site-specific recombination to index library DNA, and next-generation sequencing to identify desired clones. We used REDI to generate a library of ~3,300 DNA probes that exhibited > 96% purity and remarkable uniformity (> 95% of probes within twofold of the median abundance). Additionally, we created a collection of ~9,000 individually accessible CRISPR interference yeast strains for > 99% of genes required for either fermentative or respiratory growth, demonstrating the utility of REDI for rapid and cost-effective creation of strain collections from oligonucleotide pools. Our approach is adaptable to any complex DNA library, and fundamentally changes how these libraries can be parsed, maintained, propagated, and characterized., (© 2017 The Authors.
