16. Enhancement in Efficiency of CIGS Solar Cell by Using a p-Si BSF Layer.

Abstract

Copper–indium–gallium–diselenide Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) is a semiconductor compound belonging to group I-III-VI, with a chalcopyrite crystal structure. CIGS is promising for the development of high-performance photovoltaic applications in terms of stability and conversion efficiency. It is one of the main candidates to rival the efficiency and stability of conventional crystalline silicon cells, due to its high light absorption coefficient, lower material cost, and high stability. The limitation of its use is that CIGS integrates indium (In) and gallium (Ga), which are rare and expensive materials. The amount of these materials in the CIGS cell can be reduced by optimizing the thickness of the absorber. We show that the introduction of a layer of highly doped silicon in the structure of the solar cell between the absorber layer and the back surface field layer effectively allows for decreasing the thickness of the absorber. Within the same objective, we focus on the danger of cadmium in the CdS buffer layer. In the first optimizations, we replaced the n-type CdS buffer layer with a n-type Zn(O,S) buffer layer. For this work, we used a one-dimensional simulation program, named Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator in one Dimension (SCAPS-1D), to investigate this new CIGS solar cell structure. After optimization, a maximum conversion efficiency of 24.43% was achieved with a 0.2 μm CIGS absorber layer and a 1 µm Si BSF layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The development of solar concentrator technology has just reached a very significant level. Using reflectors to concentrate the sun's rays on the absorber dramatically reduces the size of the absorber, reducing heat loss and increasing its efficiency at high temperatures. Another advantage of this system is that the reflectors are significantly less expensive, per unit area, than the flat collectors. To determine the performances of a cylindrical-parabolic concentrator, mathematical modeling of the heat balance on the absorber, the coolant, and the glass envelope was established using Matlab. The system of equations obtained is solved by the finite difference method. The results for a typical day are the variation in the temperature of the heat transfer fluid, the absorber tube, and the glass envelope. Thus, we examine the effect of the wind speed, flow rate on the temperature distribution of the coolant at the outlet. However, for a mass flow rate of the fluid of 0.1 kg / s, the outlet temperature of the fluid is 85 ° C with a thermal efficiency of 73%. Excluding the energy absorbed by the absorber tube is 75% of the solar intensity received on the reflector. Abstract

The wind characteristics of four locations in Algeria (Algiers, Oran, Adrar and Ghardaia) have been assessed. The data were collected over a period of 13 year. The wind speed characteristics and wind power potential of each station have been determined using Weibull distribution. The annual average wind speed for the selected sites ranged from 3.81 m/s to 6.38 m/s and a mean wind power density from 97.26 w/m to 270.17 w/m at standard height of 10 m. The wind data at heights 30 m and 50 m were obtained by extrapolation of the 10 m data using the Power Law. Power estimates use four configurations of the General Electric GE 1.5-MW series turbines that varied in rotor diameters, cut-in, cut-out and rated speeds.

International audience; In our study, we try to find a solution for a photovoltaic installation on a remote site and even for PV panel minimizes losses due to the temperatures and intensity irradiation. The influence of the temperature of the solar cells is an important focus of our research. We can say that the temperature has a detrimental effect on the characteristics of the solar cell. When photons of low energy are lost, there will be a loss of light output. Pmax is proportional to intensity irradiation. The series resistances reduce the efficiency of the solar cell which is not preferable. The parallel resistors increase the efficiency of the solar cell which is preferable.

International audience; In the present work, the authors suggest a bidimensional transitory numerical model in a laminar regime and a forced convection of coupled transfers of heat and mass during mint leaves drying. The modelization is based on the resolution of transfer equations of the air within the interfac theory in porous environment. The method used in the resolution is that known as the non finite volumes. This method requires the code of calculation developed by Patankar and based on algorithm SIMPLER. The Resolution of the transfer equations permitted us to determine the distributions of the temperature and the humidity within the two environments air mint leaves.

Abstract

We present and analyze experimental results obtained with a laboratory setup based on a hardware and smart instrumentation for the complete study of performance of PV panels using for illumination an artificial radiation source (Halogen lamps). Associated to an accurate analysis, this global experimental procedure allows the determination of effective performance under standard conditions thanks to a simulation process originally developed under Matlab software environment. The uniformity of the irradiated surface was checked by simulation of the light field. We studied the response of standard commercial photovoltaic panels under enlightenment measured by a spectrometer with different spectra for two sources, halogen lamps and sunlight. Then, we bring a special attention to the influence of the spectral distribution of light on the characteristics of photovoltaic panel, that we have performed as a function of temperature and for different illuminations with dedicated measurements and studies of the open circuit voltage and short-circuit current. This study is based on data and statistics published in the atlas wind of Algeria established by the National office of the Meteorology, which had 37 stations of measures. The annual average wind speed for the selected sites ranged from 4.00 m/s to 7.20 m/s and a mean wind power density from 82.51 W/m2 to 283.12 W/m2 at standard height of 10m. The wind speed and the Weibull parameters were extrapolated standard height 10m with 30 and 50m by using vertical extrapolation laws. The Weibull parameters k and c are determined and used for estimate the annual average wind speed and the power density for each site.

Abstract

Millimeter-wave frequency bands have long held the appeal of enormous bandwidths for high-data-rate, line-of-sight communications. The main limitation on the increased use of millimeter-wave components and systems has been the cost of manufacturing hardware with such small dimensions (as a function of wavelength) and with the corresponding tight tolerances. But silicon (Si) micromachining has been applied to microwave and millimeter-wave circuits in many ways since its introduction in the late 1980s and offers great potential for realizing cost-effective millimeter-wave products. Micromachining, or sculpting crystal Si, can be made using either orientation-dependent (anisotropic) or orientation-independent (isotropic) etchants. Silicon micromachined, dielectric membrane supported structures, such as antennas, transmission lines, and filters, have shown improved performance and have extended the operating range of planar circuits to W-band frequencies and beyond.[superscript]1-3 In addition, silicon micromachined-based packaging provides a high-isolation self-package without the need for external carriers or external hermetic shielding. This method of circuit integration provides a comprehensive technique to integrate a very large degree of functionality with extremely high density and at a relatively low cost. The vertically layered structure of a micromachined circuit presents an excellent opportunity for three-dimensional integration, resulting in the potential for substantial reductions in size. Micromachined circuits are an ideal way to integrate microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) devices and provide components with performance and size advantages from 1 GHz to terahertz frequencies. They demonstrate their greatest promise at K-band and above. Abstract

We study a solution for photovoltaic plants located in an isolated site in the aim to minimize losses in PV panels due to the effect of temperature changes and intensity irradiation variations. The influence of the temperature of the solar cells is an important focus in research. We can say that the temperature has a detrimental effect on the characteristics of the solar cell. When photons of low energy are lost, there will be a loss of light output. Pmax is proportional to intensity irradiation. The series resistances reduce the efficiency of the solar cell which is not preferable. The parallel resistors increase the efficiency of the solar cell which is preferable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
