1. Does the $8-N$ bonding rule break down in As$_2$Se$_3$ glass?

Abstract

The local coordination numbers of As$_2$Se$_3$ glass were determined by a combination of anomalous x-ray scattering experiments, reverse Monte Carlo calculations, and {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations. The well-known `8-$N$ bonding rule' proposed by Mott breaks down around the As atoms, exceeding the rule by 7--26%. An experimental prediction based on mean-field theory agrees with the present experimental and theoretical results. The fourfold coordinated As atoms likely form As-As wrong bond chains rather than ethan-like configurations, which is identified as the origin for the breakdown of the `8-$N$ bonding rule'., Comment: 6 pages, 6figures, 1table, submitted to Europhysics Letters

Abstract

XPAD3 is a large surface X-ray photon counting imager with high count rates, large counter dynamics and very fast data readout. Data are readout in parallel by a PCI Express interface using DMA transfer. Abstract

Diffraction Anomalous Fine Structure (DAFS) spectroscopy uses resonant elastic x-rays scattering as an atomic, shell and site selective probe that gives information on the electronic structure and the local atomic environment as well as on the long range ordered crystallographic structure. A DAFS experiment consists of measuring the Bragg peak intensities as a function of the energy of the incoming x-ray beam. The French CRG (Collaborative Research Group) beamline BM2-D2AM (Diffraction Diffusion Anomale Multi-longueurs d'onde) at the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) has developed a state of the art energy scan diffraction set-up. Abstract

Currently available 2D detectors do not make full use of the high flux and high brilliance of third generation synchrotron sources. The XPAD prototype, using active pixels, has been developed to fulfill the needs of materials science scattering experiments. At the time, its prototype is build of eight modules of eight chips. The threshold calibration of [approximately equal to] 4 [10.sup.4] pixels is discussed. Applications to powder diffraction or SAXS experiments prove that it allows to record high quality data. Abstract

Core-level photoemission spectroscopy and anomalous x-ray scattering (AXS) measurements were performed for the Pd42.5Ni7.5Cu30P20 (PNCP) excellent metallic glass to investigate the chemical nature and local atomic structure, and the results were compared to those in Pd40Ni40P20 and Pd40Cu40P20. The P 2p core levels clearly separate into two states, indicating that the P atoms have two different chemical sites, which is a strong experimental proof for the existence of an elastic inhomogeneity. From the AXS close to the Pd K edge, a specific Pd-P-Pd atomic configuration was observed, which is related to the stable state in the P 2p core levels. All of the core levels measured in PNCP have the deepest binding energies among these glasses, indicating the most stable electronic states. Local structure around the P atoms is discussed by the AXS data and a metastable crystal appeared in a supercooled metallic alloy close to PNCP.

Abstract

A new compact cell for in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies of adsorption or catalysis reactions has been designed to enable high performance whilst minimizing difficulties in use. It includes a system for simple insertion and alignment of capillary samples and an original miniaturized furnace providing excellent temperature homogeneity along the sample (temperature gradient less than 1 K over a 6 mm zone at 530 K). The efficiency of this setup is illustrated by in situ characterization of a zeolite (SrX) at four hydration levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
