Search

Located at the bottom of the main sequence, ultracool dwarf stars are widespread in the solar neighbourhood. Nevertheless, their extremely low luminosity has left their planetary population largely unexplored, and only one of them, TRAPPIST-1, has so far been found to host a transiting planetary system. In this context, we present the SPECULOOS project's detection of an Earth-sized planet in a 17 h orbit around an ultracool dwarf of M6.5 spectral type located 16.8 pc away. The planet's high irradiation (16 times that of Earth) combined with the infrared luminosity and Jupiter-like size of its host star make it one of the most promising rocky exoplanet targets for detailed emission spectroscopy characterization with JWST. Indeed, our sensitivity study shows that just ten secondary eclipse observations with the Mid-InfraRed Instrument/Low-Resolution Spectrometer on board JWST should provide strong constraints on its atmospheric composition and/or surface mineralogy.

Ultra-cool dwarf stars are abundant, long-lived, and uniquely suited to enable the atmospheric study of transiting terrestrial companions with JWST. Amongst them, the most prominent is the M8.5V star TRAPPIST-1 and its seven planets. While JWST Cycle 1 observations have started to yield preliminary insights into the planets, they have also revealed that their atmospheric exploration requires a better understanding of their host star. Here, we propose a roadmap to characterize the TRAPPIST-1 system -- and others like it -- in an efficient and robust manner. We notably recommend that -- although more challenging to schedule -- multi-transit windows be prioritized to mitigate the effects of stellar activity and gather up to twice more transits per JWST hour spent. We conclude that, for such systems, planets cannot be studied in isolation by small programs, but rather need large-scale, jointly space- and ground-based initiatives to fully exploit the capabilities of JWST for the exploration of terrestrial planets.

One possible formation mechanism for Hot Jupiters is that high-eccentricity gas giants experience tidal interactions with their host star that cause them to lose orbital energy and migrate inwards. We study these types of tidal interactions in an eccentric Hot Jupiter called HAT-P-2 b, which is a system where a long-period companion has been suggested, and hints of orbital evolution (de Wit et al. 2017) were detected. Using five additional years of radial velocity (RV) measurements, we further investigate these phenomena. We investigated the long-period companion by jointly fitting RVs and Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry and confirmed this long-period companion, significantly narrowed down the range of possible periods ($P_2 = 8500_{-1500}^{+2600}$ days), and determined that it must be a substellar object ($10.7_{-2.2}^{+5.2}$ $M_j$). We also developed a modular pipeline to simultaneously model rapid orbital evolution and the long-period companion. We find that the rate and significance of evolution are highly dependent on the long-period companion modeling choices. In some cases the orbital rates of change reached $de/dt = {3.28}_{-1.72}^{+1.75} \cdot 10^{-3}$/year, $d\omega/dt = 1.12 \pm 0.22 ^{\circ}$/year which corresponds to a $\sim 321$ year apsidal precession period. In other cases, the data is consistent with $de/dt = 7.67 \pm 18.6 \cdot 10^{-4}$/year, $d\omega/dt = 0.76\pm 0.24 ^{\circ}$/year. The most rapid changes found are significantly larger than the expected relativistic precession rate and could be caused by transient tidal planet-star interactions. Transmission spectroscopy is currently the technique best suited to study a wide range of planetary atmospheres, leveraging the filtering of a star's light by a planet's atmosphere rather than its own emission. However, as both a planet and its star contribute to the information encoded in a transmission spectrum, an accurate accounting of the stellar contribution is pivotal to enabling robust atmospheric studies. As current stellar models lack the required fidelity for such accounting, we investigate here the capability of time-resolved spectroscopy to yield high-fidelity, empirical constraints on the emission spectra of stellar surface heterogeneities (i.e., spots and faculae). Using TRAPPIST-1 as a test case, we simulate time-resolved JWST/NIRISS spectra and demonstrate that with a blind approach incorporating no physical priors, it is possible to constrain the photospheric spectrum to less than 0.5% and the spectra of stellar heterogeneities to within 10%, a precision that enables photon-limited (rather than model-limited) science. Now confident that time-resolved spectroscopy can propel the field in an era of robust high-precision transmission spectroscopy, we introduce a list of areas for future exploration to harness its full potential, including wavelength dependency of limb darkening and hybrid priors from stellar models as a means to further break the degeneracy between the position, size, and spectra of heterogeneities., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Improvements in the number of confirmed planets and the precision of observations imply a need to better understand subtle effects that may bias interpretations of exoplanet observations. One such effect is the distortion of a short period planet by its host star, affecting its derived density. We extend the work of Burton et al., Correia, and others, using a gravitational potential formulation to a sample of nearly 200 planets with periods less than 3 days. We find five planets exhibiting density variations of >10% and as many as 20 planets with deviations >5%. We derive an analytic approximation for this deviation as a function of the orbital period, transit depth, and mass ratio between the planet and host star, allowing for rapid determination of such tidal effects. We find that current density error bars are typically larger than tidal deviations but that reducing the uncertainty on transit depth and radial velocity (RV) amplitude by a factor of 3 causes tidal effects to dominate density errors (>50%) in >40% of planets in our sample, implying that in the near future upgraded observational precision will cause shape deviations to become a bottleneck with regards to analysis of exoplanet compositions. These two parameters are found to dominate uncertainties compared to errors on stellar mass and radius. We identify a group of eight planets (including WASP-19 b, HAT-P-7 b, and WASP-12 b) for which current density uncertainties are as much as 4x smaller than the potential shift due to tides, implying a possible 4{\sigma} bias on their density estimates., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Transiting exoplanets orbiting young nearby stars are ideal laboratories for testing theories of planet formation and evolution. However, to date only a handful of stars with age <1 Gyr have been found to host transiting exoplanets. Here we present the discovery and validation of a sub-Neptune around HD 18599, a young (300 Myr), nearby (d=40 pc) K star. We validate the transiting planet candidate as a bona fide planet using data from the TESS, Spitzer, and Gaia missions, ground-based photometry from IRSF, LCO, PEST, and NGTS, speckle imaging from Gemini, and spectroscopy from CHIRON, NRES, FEROS, and Minerva-Australis. The planet has an orbital period of 4.13 d, and a radius of 2.7Rearth. The RV data yields a 3-sigma mass upper limit of 30.5Mearth which is explained by either a massive companion or the large observed jitter typical for a young star. The brightness of the host star (V~9 mag) makes it conducive to detailed characterization via Doppler mass measurement which will provide a rare view into the interior structure of young planets., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

When studying transiting exoplanets it is common to assume a spherical planet shape. However short rotational periods can cause a planet to bulge at its equator, as is the case with Saturn whose equatorial radius is almost 10% larger than its polar radius. As a new generation of instruments comes online, it is important to continually assess the underlying assumptions of models to ensure robust and accurate inferences. We analyze bulk samples of known transiting planets and calculate their expected signal strength if they were to be oblate. We find that for noise levels below 100ppm, as many as 100 planets could have detectable oblateness. We also investigate the effects of fitting spherical planet models to synthetic oblate lightcurves. We find that this biases the retrieved parameters by several standard deviations for oblateness values > 0.1-0.2. When attempting to fit an oblateness model to both spherical and oblate lightcurves, we find that the sensitivity of such fits is correlated with both the SNR as well as the time sampling of the data, which can mask the oblateness signal. For typical values of these quantities for Kepler observations, it is difficult to rule out oblateness values less than ~0.25. This results in an accuracy wall of 10-15% for the density of planets which may be oblate. Finally, we find that a precessing oblate planet has the ability to mimic the signature of a long-period companion via transit timing variations, inducing offsets at the level of 10s of seconds., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We validate the presence of a two-planet system orbiting the 0.15--1.4 Gyr K4 dwarf TOI 560 (HD 73583). The system consists of an inner moderately eccentric transiting mini-Neptune (TOI 560 b, $P = 6.3980661^{+0.0000095}_{-0.0000097}$ days, $e=0.294^{+0.13}_{-0.062}$, $M= 0.94^{+0.31}_{-0.23}M_{Nep}$) initially discovered in the Sector 8 \tess\ mission observations, and a transiting mini-Neptune (TOI 560 c, $P = 18.8805^{+0.0024}_{-0.0011}$ days, $M= 1.32^{+0.29}_{-0.32}M_{Nep}$) discovered in the Sector 34 observations, in a rare near-1:3 orbital resonance. We utilize photometric data from \tess\, \textit{Spitzer}, and ground-based follow-up observations to confirm the ephemerides and period of the transiting planets, vet false positive scenarios, and detect the photo-eccentric effect for TOI 560 b. We obtain follow-up spectroscopy and corresponding precise radial velocities (RVs) with the iSHELL spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the HIRES Spectrograph at Keck Observatory to validate the planetary nature of these signals, which we combine with published PFS RVs from Magellan Observatory. We detect the masses of both planets at $> 3-\sigma$ significance. We apply a Gaussian process (GP) model to the \tess\ light curves to place priors on a chromatic radial velocity GP model to constrain the stellar activity of the TOI 560 host star, and confirm a strong wavelength dependence for the stellar activity demonstrating the ability of NIR RVs in mitigating stellar activity for young K dwarfs. TOI 560 is a nearby moderately young multi-planet system with two planets suitable for atmospheric characterization with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and other upcoming missions. We present 2,241 exoplanet candidates identified with data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during its two-year prime mission. We list these candidates in the TESS Objects of Interest (TOI) Catalog, which includes both new planet candidates found by TESS and previously-known planets recovered by TESS observations. We describe the process used to identify TOIs and investigate the characteristics of the new planet candidates, and discuss some notable TESS planet discoveries. The TOI Catalog includes an unprecedented number of small planet candidates around nearby bright stars, which are well-suited for detailed follow-up observations. The TESS data products for the Prime Mission (Sectors 1-26), including the TOI Catalog, light curves, full-frame images, and target pixel files, are publicly available on the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes., Comment: 39 pages, 16 figures. Non-rocky sub-jovian exoplanets in high irradiation environments are rare. LTT 9979b, also known as TESS Object of Interest (TOI) 193.01, is one of the few such planets discovered to date, and the first example of an ultra-hot Neptune. The planet's bulk density indicates that it has a substantial atmosphere, so to investigate its atmospheric composition and shed further light on its origin, we obtained {\it Spitzer} IRAC secondary eclipse observations of LTT 9979b at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m. We combined the {\it Spitzer} observations with a measurement of the secondary eclipse in the {\it TESS} bandpass. The resulting secondary eclipse spectrum strongly prefers a model that includes CO absorption over a blackbody spectrum, incidentally making LTT 9979b the first {\it TESS} exoplanet (and the first ultra-hot Neptune) with evidence of a spectral feature in its atmosphere. We did not find evidence of a thermal inversion, at odds with expectations based on the atmospheres of similarly-irradiated hot Jupiters. We also report a nominal dayside brightness temperature of 2305 $\pm$ 141 K (based on the 3.6 $\mu$m secondary eclipse measurement), and we constrained the planet's orbital eccentricity to $e < 0.01$ at the 99.7 \% confidence level. Astronomers have discovered thousands of planets outside the solar system, most of which orbit stars that will eventually evolve into red giants and then into white dwarfs. During the red giant phase, any close-orbiting planets will be engulfed by the star, but more distant planets can survive this phase and remain in orbit around the white dwarf. Some white dwarfs show evidence for rocky material floating in their atmospheres, in warm debris disks, or orbiting very closely, which has been interpreted as the debris of rocky planets that were scattered inward and tidally disrupted. Recently, the discovery of a gaseous debris disk with a composition similar to ice giant planets demonstrated that massive planets might also find their way into tight orbits around white dwarfs, but it is unclear whether the planets can survive the journey. So far, the detection of intact planets in close orbits around white dwarfs has remained elusive. Here, we report the discovery of a giant planet candidate transiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534 (TIC 267574918) every 1.4 days. The planet candidate is roughly the same size as Jupiter and is no more than 14 times as massive (with 95% confidence). Other cases of white dwarfs with close brown dwarf or stellar companions are explained as the consequence of common-envelope evolution, wherein the original orbit is enveloped during the red-giant phase and shrinks due to friction. In this case, though, the low mass and relatively long orbital period of the planet candidate make common-envelope evolution less likely. Instead, the WD 1856+534 system seems to demonstrate that giant planets can be scattered into tight orbits without being tidally disrupted, and motivates searches for smaller transiting planets around white dwarfs., Comment: 50 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. HD 106315 and GJ 9827 are two bright, nearby stars that host multiple super-Earths and sub-Neptunes discovered by K2 that are well suited for atmospheric characterization. We refined the planets' ephemerides through Spitzer transits, enabling accurate transit prediction required for future atmospheric characterization through transmission spectroscopy. Through a multi-year high-cadence observing campaign with Keck/HIRES and Magellan/PFS, we improved the planets' mass measurements in anticipation of HST transmission spectroscopy. For GJ 9827, we modeled activity-induced radial velocity signals with a Gaussian process informed from the Calcium II H&K lines in order to more accurately model the effect of stellar noise on our data. We found planet masses of M$_b$=$4.87\pm 0.37$ M$_\oplus$, M$_c$=$1.92\pm 0.49$ M$_\oplus$, and M$_d$=$3.42\pm 0.62$ M$_\oplus$. For HD 106315, we found that such activity-radial velocity decorrelation was not effective due to the reduced presence of spots and speculate that this may extend to other hot stars as well (T$_{\rm {eff}}>6200$ K). We found planet masses of M$_b$=$10.5\pm 3.1$ M$_\oplus$ and M$_c$=$12.0\pm 3.8$ M$_\oplus$. We investigated all of the planets' compositions through comparing their masses and radii to a range of interior models. GJ 9827 b and GJ 9827 c are both consistent with an Earth-like rocky composition, GJ 9827 d and HD 106315 b both require additional volatiles and are consistent with moderate amounts of water or hydrogen/helium, and HD 106315 c is consistent with 10% hydrogen/helium surrounding an Earth-like rock and iron core.

New sets of young M dwarfs with complex, sharp-peaked, and strictly periodic photometric modulations have recently been discovered with Kepler/K2 (scallop shells) and TESS (complex rotators). All are part of star-forming associations, are distinct from other variable stars, and likely belong to a unified class. Suggested hypotheses include star spots, accreting dust disks, co-rotating clouds of material, magnetically constrained material, spots and misaligned disks, and pulsations. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview and add new observational constraints with TESS and SPECULOOS Southern Observatory (SSO) photometry. We scrutinize all hypotheses from three new angles: (1) we investigate each scenario's occurrence rates via young star catalogs; (2) we study the features' longevity using over one year of combined data; and (3) we probe the expected color dependency with multi-color photometry. In this process, we also revisit the stellar parameters accounting for activity effects, study stellar flares as activity indicators over year-long time scales, and develop toy models to simulate typical morphologies. We rule out most hypotheses, and only (i) co-rotating material clouds and (ii) spots and misaligned disks remain feasible - with caveats. For (i), co-rotating dust might not be stable enough, while co-rotating gas alone likely cannot cause percentage-scale features; and (ii) would require misaligned disks around most young M dwarfs. We thus suggest a unified hypothesis, a superposition of large-amplitude spot modulations and sharp transits of co-rotating gas clouds. AU Microscopii (AU Mic) is the second closest pre main sequence star, at a distance of 9.79 parsecs and with an age of 22 million years. AU Mic possesses a relatively rare and spatially resolved3 edge-on debris disk extending from about 35 to 210 astronomical units from the star, and with clumps exhibiting non-Keplerian motion. Detection of newly formed planets around such a star is challenged by the presence of spots, plage, flares and other manifestations of magnetic activity on the star. Here we report observations of a planet transiting AU Mic. The transiting planet, AU Mic b, has an orbital period of 8.46 days, an orbital distance of 0.07 astronomical units, a radius of 0.4 Jupiter radii, and a mass of less than 0.18 Jupiter masses at 3 sigma confidence. We present a transmission spectrum for the Neptune-size exoplanet HD 106315 c from optical to infrared wavelengths based on transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3, K2, and Spitzer. The spectrum shows tentative evidence for a water absorption feature in the $1.1 - 1.7\mu$m wavelength range with a small amplitude of 30 ppm (corresponding to just $0.8 \pm 0.04$ atmospheric scale heights). Based on an atmospheric retrieval analysis, the presence of water vapor is tentatively favored with a Bayes factor of 1.7 - 2.6 (depending on prior assumptions). The spectrum is most consistent with either enhanced metallicity, high altitude condensates, or both. Cloud-free solar composition atmospheres are ruled out at $>5\sigma$ confidence. We compare the spectrum to grids of cloudy and hazy forward models and find that the spectrum is fit well by models with moderate cloud lofting or haze formation efficiency, over a wide range of metallicities ($1 - 100\times$ solar). We combine the constraints on the envelope composition with an interior structure model and estimate that the core mass fraction is $\gtrsim0.3$. With a bulk composition reminiscent of that of Neptune and an orbital distance of 0.15 AU, HD 106315 c hints that planets may form out of broadly similar material and arrive at vastly different orbits later in their evolution., Comment: Submitted to AAS journals; 19 pages, 12 figures

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single human in possession of a good space telescope, must be in search of a space vampire. Here, we showcase our search for transit signatures of tidally locked space vampires, trapped in the gravitational pull of late M-dwarfs. We generate forward models representing two potential space vampire populations - those in bat shape and those in humanoid shape. We search lightcurves from the Transiting Exo-Vampire Survey Satellite (TEvSS) using a template matching algorithm and fit them using our allesfitter software. Adding the information gained from TEvSS data, we greatly decrease the uncertainty for the existence and occurrence rates of space vampires, and constrain eta(space vampire) to a range of 0% to 100% (or more). Most known terrestrial planets orbit small stars with radii less than 60% that of the Sun. Theoretical models predict that these planets are more vulnerable to atmospheric loss than their counterparts orbiting Sun-like stars. To determine whether a thick atmosphere has survived on a small planet, one approach is to search for signatures of atmospheric heat redistribution in its thermal phase curve. Previous phase curve observations of the super-Earth 55 Cancri e (1.9 Earth radii) showed that its peak brightness is offset from the substellar point $-$ possibly indicative of atmospheric circulation. Here we report a phase curve measurement for the smaller, cooler planet LHS 3844b, a 1.3 Earth radius world in an 11-hour orbit around a small, nearby star. The observed phase variation is symmetric and has a large amplitude, implying a dayside brightness temperature of $1040\pm40$ kelvin and a nightside temperature consistent with zero kelvin (at one standard deviation). Thick atmospheres with surface pressures above 10 bar are ruled out by the data (at three standard deviations), and less-massive atmospheres are unstable to erosion by stellar wind. The data are well fitted by a bare rock model with a low Bond albedo (lower than 0.2 at two standard deviations). Planets occur most frequently around cool dwarfs, but only a handful of specific examples are known to orbit the latest-type M stars. Using TESS photometry, we report the discovery of two planets transiting the low-mass star called LP 791-18 (identified by TESS as TOI 736). This star has spectral type M6V, effective temperature 2960 K, and radius 0.17 R_Sun, making it the third-coolest star known to host planets. The two planets straddle the radius gap seen for smaller exoplanets; they include a 1.1 R_Earth planet on a 0.95 day orbit and a 2.3 R_Earth planet on a 5 day orbit. Because the host star is small the loss of light during these planets' transits is fairly large (0.4% and 1.7%). This has allowed us to detect both planets' transits from ground-based photometry, refining their radii and orbital ephemerides. In the future, radial velocity observations and transmission spectroscopy can both probe these planets' bulk interior and atmospheric compositions, and additional photometric monitoring would be sensitive to even smaller transiting planets., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, 2 planets, 1 cool star. We report improved masses, radii, and densities for four planets in two bright M-dwarf systems, K2-3 and GJ3470, derived from a combination of new radial velocity and transit observations. Supplementing K2 photometry with follow-up Spitzer transit observations refined the transit ephemerides of K2-3 b, c, and d by over a factor of 10. We analyze ground-based photometry from the Evryscope and Fairborn Observatory to determine the characteristic stellar activity timescales for our Gaussian Process fit, including the stellar rotation period and activity region decay timescale. The stellar rotation signals for both stars are evident in the radial velocity data and are included in our fit using a Gaussian process trained on the photometry. We find the masses of K2-3 b, K2-3 c and GJ3470 b to be 6.48$^{+0.99}_{-0.93}$, 2.14$^{+1.08}_{-1.04}$, and 12.58$^{+1.31}_{-1.28}$ M$_\oplus$ respectively. K2-3 d was not significantly detected and has a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of 2.80 M$_\oplus$. These two systems are training cases for future TESS systems; due to the low planet densities ($\rho$ $<$ 3.7 g cm$^{-3}$) and bright host stars (K $<$ 9 mag), they are among the best candidates for transmission spectroscopy in order to characterize the atmospheric compositions of small planets., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted to AJ

We present new observations of the multi-planet system HIP~41378, a bright star ($V$ = 8.9, $K_s$ = 7.7) with five known transiting planets. Observations in Campaign 5 of the K2 mission showed multiple transits of two Neptune-sized bodies and single transits of three larger planets ($R_P= 0.33R_J, 0.47R_J, 0.88 R_J$). K2 recently observed the system again in Campaign 18. We observe one new transit each of two of the larger planets, HIP41378~d and~f, giving maximal possible orbital periods of 1114 and 1084 days, respectively. Other possible periods include integer divisions of these maximum values down to a lower limit of about 50 days. We use all available photometry to determine the eccentricity distributions of HIP41378~d \& f, finding that periods $\lesssim$300 days require non-zero eccentricity. We also perform a stability analysis on the orbits of planets d and f to assess the likelihood of their different possible periods, finding that short periods (P $<$ 300 days) are disfavored. In addition, we observe transits of the inner two planets b and c with Spitzer/IRAC, which we combine with the new K2 observations of these planets to search for transit timing variations (TTVs). We find a linear ephemeris for planet b, but see a significant TTV signal for planet c that could be induced by planet d, e, or f. The ability to recover the two smaller planets with Spitzer shows that the several planets in this fascinating system will continue to be detectable with Spitzer, CHEOPS, TESS, and other observatories. This will allow us to precisely determine the periods of d and f, characterize the TTVs of planet~c, recover the transits of planet~e, and further enhance our view of this remarkable dynamical laboratory., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables

We produce light curves for all ~34,000 targets observed with K2 in Campaign 17 (C17), identifying 34 planet candidates, 184 eclipsing binaries, and 222 other periodic variables. The location of the C17 field means follow-up can begin immediately now that the campaign has concluded and interesting targets have been identified. The C17 field has a large overlap with C6, so this latest campaign also offers a rare opportunity to study a large number of targets already observed in a previous K2 campaign. The timing of the C17 data release, shortly before science operations begin with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), also lets us exercise some of the tools and methods developed for identification and dissemination of planet candidates from TESS. We find excellent agreement between these results and those identified using only K2-based tools. Among our planet candidates are several planet candidates with sizes < 4 R_E and orbiting stars with KepMag < 10 (indicating good RV targets of the sort TESS hopes to find) and a Jupiter-sized single-transit event around a star already hosting a 6 d planet candidate., Comment: Submitted. 19 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables, 34 planet candidates, 184 EBs, 34,000 lightcurves

In the hot-start core accretion formation model for gas giants, the interior of a planet is usually assumed to be fully convective. By calculating the detailed internal evolution of a planet assuming hot start outer boundary conditions, we show that such a planet will in fact form with a radially increasing internal entropy profile, so that its interior will be radiative instead of convective. For a hot outer boundary, there is a minimum value for the entropy of the internal adiabat $S_{min}$ below which the accreting envelope does not match smoothly onto the interior, but instead deposits high entropy material onto the growing interior. One implication of this would be to at least temporarily halt the mixing of heavy elements within the planet, which are deposited by planetesimals accreted during formation. The compositional gradient this would impose could subsequently disrupt convection during post-accretion cooling, which would alter the observed cooling curve of the planet. However even with a homogeneous composition, for which convection develops as the planet cools, the difference in cooling timescale will change the inferred mass of directly-imaged gas giants., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We calculate the evolution of gas giant planets during the runaway gas accretion phase of formation, to understand how the luminosity of young giant planets depends on the accretion conditions. We construct steady-state envelope models, and run time-dependent simulations of accreting planets with the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) code. We show that the evolution of the internal entropy depends on the contrast between the internal adiabat and the entropy of the accreted material, parametrized by the shock temperature $T_0$ and pressure $P_0$. At low temperatures ($T_0\lesssim 300$--$1000\ {\rm K}$, depending on model parameters), the accreted material has a lower entropy than the interior. The convection zone extends to the surface and can drive a large luminosity, leading to rapid cooling and cold starts. For higher temperatures, the accreted material has a larger entropy than the interior, giving a radiative zone that stalls cooling. For $T_0\gtrsim 2000\ {\rm K}$, the surface--interior entropy contrast cannot be accommodated by the radiative envelope, and the accreted matter accumulates with high entropy, forming a hot start. The final state of the planet depends on the shock temperature, accretion rate, and starting entropy at the onset of runaway accretion. Cold starts with $L\lesssim 5\times 10^{-6}\ L_\odot$ require low accretion rates and starting entropy, and that the temperature of the accreting material is maintained close to the nebula temperature. If instead the temperature is near the value required to radiate the accretion luminosity, $4\pi R^2\sigma T_0^4\sim (GM\dot M/R)$, as suggested by previous work on radiative shocks in the context of star formation, gas giant planets form in a hot start with $L\sim 10^{-4}\ L_\odot$., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ
