Background: Death pronouncement is an important moment that can impact a family's bereavement process; however, necessary improvements in physicians' behavior during death pronouncement remain unclear. Objectives: To explore whether the lack of certain behaviors by the physician was associated with a perceived need for improving death pronouncement for advanced cancer patients in palliative care units (PCUs). Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of a nationwide multicenter questionnaire survey conducted in 2018 that targeted bereaved family members of cancer patients who died in PCUs. We performed univariate analysis to investigate the need to improve behavior toward death pronouncement. We performed bivariate analysis to investigate the relationship among the need for improvement in behavior toward death pronouncement, physician attribution (primary responsible physician, a member of the same team, and another physician), and nine specific behaviors. Results: Four hundred twenty-two questionnaires (64.2%) were returned. We analyzed 356 responses and found that 32.5% perceived the need to improve death pronouncement. Lack of certain behaviors at death pronouncement, especially not explicitly explaining the cause of death to family members (odds ratio: 11.89, p?0.001), were positively associated with the need for improvement. Experience feedback data is increasingly recognised as being helpful in improving healthcare services, and in meeting patient and family needs. This end-of-life care project, based on the principles of appreciative inquiry, sought to learn from the experiences of bereaved people whose relative had died in an acute hospital setting. Informal feedback, offered during a routine telephone call, was thematically analysed and interpreted in an appreciative manner. Confirmatory representations of caring practices and behaviours were identified, categorised and disseminated in a way that enabled staff to come to know and understand end-of-life care at its best, rather than as a set of problematised events. The findings served as a benchmark for individuals and teams to assess and progress their practice reflectively. The authors conclude that staff receptiveness to informal bereaved family feedback may be enhanced by focusing on the positive qualities of end-of-life care within existing practices. Despite the well-known negative ripple effect of the death of a loved one on the bereaved family, there is a lack of research that empirically examines the relationship between bereavement experience and the psychological adaptation process of the bereaved. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between complicated grief, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in the bereaved family. The results revealed that PTG of the bereaved could be promoted more effectively by an integrated intervention to promote personal competencies for resilience accompanied by strong family support compared to separate interventions of resilience and family support. Background: Bathing in a tub is integral to Japanese culture. It improves palliative care patients' symptoms and may improve quality of life. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and impressions of bathing for terminally ill cancer patients and its relations to the evaluations of perceived end-of-life care and achievement of a good death. Design: This was a cross-sectional, anonymous, self-report questionnaire survey. Setting/Subjects: The questionnaire for this study was sent to bereaved family members who had lost loved ones in 14 general hospitals and 187 palliative care wards in Japan. Measurements: The bereaved family members of the patients who had actually bathed were asked about their impression of bathing. The short version of the Good Death Inventory (GDI) and the Care Evaluation Scale were used to evaluate ?achievement of a good death.? In total, 1819 surveys were sent between July and September 2018 to bereaved family members of patients who had died between February 2014 and January 2018 in 14 general hospitals and 187 palliative care wards in Japan. Overall 885 questionnaires (valid response rate 48%) returned by bereaved family members were analyzed. Results: Overall, 85% of bereaved family members of patients who bathed evaluated the experience positively, 86% reported that the patient's face seemed to become calm after the bath, and 28% of bereaved family members whose loved one had not bathed reported regretting it. The total GDI score for the bereaved family's desired death was 82.7???13.0 for the bathing group and 75.4???15.7 for the no bathing group, a significant difference (effect size?=?0.52, p?0.01). Conclusions: Bathing before death was evaluated positively and was associated with the achievement of a good death.

This article analyzed the grief of Naomi in the book of Ruth by using the six stages of grief by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler. Although Naomi could be an inadequate model in dealing with her grief, her attitude resonates with many people in dealing with their griefs. It makes this study is noteworthy. This article analyzed how Naomi dealt with her grief in the six stages of grief, namely: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, and finding the meaning and then take the implication for the ministry during the pandemic of Covid-19. The study showed that anger and depression are visible in the story of Naomi. Acceptance is not explicit. There is no denial, bargaining, and finding the meaning stages in Naomi’s grief. She was still struggling with her grief, although she could accept the new situation with the marriage of Ruth and Boaz and the birth of Obed. Today many people struggle with grief during this pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to vaccines and medication and notice the need for psychological help and therapy for the bereaved families.

ObjectiveIdentifying the risks of completed suicide in suicide survivors is essential for policies supporting family members of suicide victims. We aimed to determine the suicide risk of suicide survivors and identify the number of suicides per 100,000 population of suicide survivors, bereaved families of traffic accident victims, and bereaved families with non-suicide deaths.MethodsThis was a nationwide population-based cohort study in South Korea. The data were taken from the Korean National Health Insurance and Korea National Statistical Office between January 2008 and December 2017. The relationship between the decedent and the bereaved family was identified using the family database of the National Health Insurance Data. Age and gender were randomly matched 1:1 among 133,386 suicide deaths and non-suicide deaths. A proportional hazard model regression analysis was conducted after confirming the cumulative hazard using Kaplan–Meier curves to obtain the hazard ratio (HR) of completed suicide in suicide survivors.ResultsUsing 423,331 bereaved families of suicide victims and 420,978 bereaved families of non-suicide deaths as the control group, HR of completed suicide in suicidal survivors was found to be 2.755 [95% confidence limit (CL): 2.550–2.977]. HR for wives committing suicide after husbands' suicide was 5.096 (95% CL: 3.982–6.522), which was the highest HR among all relationships with suicide decedents. The average duration from suicide death to suicide of family members was 25.4 months. Among suicide survivors, the number of suicides per 100,000 people was 586, thrice that of people in bereaved families of traffic accident victims and in bereaved families of non-suicide deaths.ConclusionThe risk of completed suicide was three times higher in suicide survivors than in bereaved families with non-suicide deaths, and it was highest in wives of suicide decedents. Thus, socio-environmental interventions for suicidal survivors must be expanded.

Objective: In 2015, the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea affected 186 patients and led to 38 bereaved families. This study aimed at investigating the nature and related factors of the psychological responses of MERS victims during the acute phase of disaster. Methods: The MERS Psychological Support Team under the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare provided counseling services to MERS survivors and bereaved families for 4 weeks, based on crisis intervention. In this study, we reviewed the counseling records of 109 survivors and 80 bereaved family members, and analyzed their epidemiological and MERS-related information along with psychological responses. Results: Somatic symptoms and anxiety related to social stigmatization or disease transmission were common in MERS survivors, whereas grief reactions such as sadness, and anger were frequently observed in bereaved families. Bereaved MERS survivors showed more avoidance/isolation than non-bereaved MERS survivors. Females, those with an underlying physical or psychiatric health condition, and those having experienced longer duration of hospitalization and non-healthcare workers were more at risk of suffering from psychological problems. Conclusions: Survivors and bereaved families of epidemics can experience various psychological distresses depending on individual characteristics and the inherent features of the epidemic. The aim of this study is to validate the Chinese version of the Care Evaluation Scale (CES). Methods From January to December 2017, a cross-sectional online survey was conducted among bereaved family members of cancer patients from 10 medical institutes. The reliability of the CES was assessed with Cronbach’s α, and structural validity was evaluated by confirmatory factor analysis. Concurrent validity was tested by examining the correlation between the CES total score and overall satisfaction with end-of-life care, quality of dying and death, and quality of life. Results A total of 305 valid responses were analyzed. The average CES score was 70.7 ± 16.4, and the Cronbach’s α of the CES was 0.967 (range: 0.802–0.927 for the 10 domains). The fit indices for the 10-factor model of CES were good(root-mean-square error of approximation, 0.047; comparative fit index, 0.952; Tucker–Lewis index, 0.946; standardized root mean square residual, 0.053). This risk is higher during the COVID-19 pandemic, which raises the need for understanding existing bereavement support interventions. This scoping review aimed to map and summarize findings from the existing literature regarding bereavement support interventions (i.e., psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions) for family carers of people who died of COVID-19. The Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework was used. Five databases—Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science—were searched for articles available from the inception of COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020) to January 2022, following the PRISMA guidelines. Among the 990 studies identified, only seven met this study's inclusion criteria. The analysis comprised three key topics: types of support programmes and bereavement interventions; tools used to measure the outcomes; and evidence of the impacts of the interventions. All studies analysed included interdisciplinary interventions, commonly developed in clinical settings. Support for recently bereaved individuals can entail cognitive behavioural therapy strategies and other tools to educate, guide, support, and promote healthy integration of loss. To mitigate the effects of non-normative family bereavement, we recommend a systematic approach and coordination between organizational settings, including access to informal and professional support, in order to find hope while navigating the aftermath of COVID-19. Intensive care units (ICUs) are designed for critically ill patients who often experience high mortality rates owing to the severity of their conditions. Although the primary goal is patient recovery, it is crucial to understand the quality of death in the ICU setting. Nevertheless, there is a notable lack of systematic reviews on measured death quality and its associated factors. This study aims to conduct a quantitative synthesis of evidence regarding the quality of death in the ICU and offers a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing this quality, including its relationship with the post-intensive care syndrome-family (PICS-F). A thorough search without any language restrictions across MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Igaku Chuo Zasshi databases identified relevant studies published until September 2023. We aggregated the results regarding the quality of death care for patients who died in the ICU across each measurement tool and calculated the point estimates and 95% confidence intervals. The quantitative synthesis encompassed 19 studies, wherein the Quality of Dying and Death-single item (QODD-1) was reported in 13 instances (Point estimate: 7.0, 95% CI: 6.93-7.06). Patient demographic data, including age and gender, as well as the presence or absence of invasive procedures, such as life support devices and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, along with the management of pain and physical symptoms, were found to be associated with a high quality of death. Only one study reported an association between quality of death and PICS-F scores; however, no significant association was identified. The QODD-1 scale emerged as a frequently referenced and valuable metric for evaluating the quality of death in the ICU, and factors associated with the quality of ICU death were identified. However, research gaps persist, particularly regarding the variations in the quality of ICU deaths based on cultural backgrounds and healthcare systems. Context: In end-of-life care, rehabilitation for patients with cancer is considered to be an important means for improving patients' quality of death and dying.Objectives: To determine whether the provision of rehabilitation for patients with cancer in palliative care units is associated with the achievement of a good death.Methods: This study involved a cross-sectional, anonymous, and self-report questionnaire survey of families of patients with cancer who died in palliative care units in Japan. We evaluated the short version of Good Death Inventory (GDI) on a seven-point scale. A logistic regression model was used to calculate the propensity score. Covariates included in this model were survey year, patients' characteristics, and families' characteristics. The associations between rehabilitation and GDI were tested using trend tests after propensity score matching adjustment.Results: Of the 1965 family caregivers who received the questionnaires, available data were obtained from 1008 respondents (51.2%). Among them, 285 (28.2%) cases received rehabilitation in palliative care units. There was no difference in total GDI score between the groups with and without rehabilitation. In exploratory analyses, patients receiving rehabilitation were significantly more likely to feel maintaining hope and pleasure (mean 4.50 [SE 0.10] vs. 4.05 [0.11], respectively; effect size [ES] 0.31; P = 0.003), good relationships with medical staff (mean 5.67 [SE 0.07] vs. 5.43 [0.09], respectively; ES 0.22; P = 0.035), and being respected as an individual (mean 6.08 [SE 0.06] vs. 5.90 [0.07], respectively; ES 0.19; P = 0.049) compared with patients not receiving rehabilitation.Conclusion: Rehabilitation in palliative care units may contribute to several domains of quality of death and dying, particularly maintaining hope and pleasure. Individuals are likely to be involved in at least one motor vehicle accident (MVA) during their lifetime. MVAs can have a significant impact on both the victims and their families; in the case of death, the bereaved family may face mental health problems. Ongoing studies have focused on devising strategies to support victims and their families who face such problems. This paper clarifies the reality of mental health issues of MVA victims and reviews the current state of victim support available in Japan, its significance and other relevant issues. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in MVA survivors has been estimated to be 8%–45% one month after the accident and 6%–40% six months after the accident. The mental health of the survivors' families, bereaved families, and orphaned children are usually affected after MVAs. Bereaved families experience not only PTSD but also symptoms of complicated grief. Based on studies using different scales to measure symptoms and other items, symptoms of PTSD and complicated grief have been seen in 17%–75% and 6%–61% of bereaved families, respectively, which were much higher than those observed in the general population. In addition to the actual physical and mental damage caused by MVAs, it is necessary to take notice of survivors who are exposed to post-accident secondary victimization. Justice agencies, such as the National Police Agency and Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau, as well as victim support centers and self-help groups, provide support to MVA victims. To a certain extent, evaluating support provided to MVA victims and their families is possible by initiating assistance promptly and actively using leaflets, brochures, and other materials. The literature reports that women are at increased risk for developing PTSD and complicated grief; also, men and women use different mechanisms for coping with stress. Moreover, men tend not to express their pain and try to manage it on their own. Thus, support that is appropriate for both sexes must be provided. In the future, the effectiveness of the support provided should be evaluated by survivors. Purpose: Although little improvement has been made in the survival rate among young cancer patients over recent decades, whether they have achieved a good death has never been systematically explored. We aimed to clarify whether young cancer patients (aged 20-39 years) have achieved a good death, and compare their achievement with that of middle-aged patients (aged 40-64 years).Methods: We analyzed combined data of three nationwide, cross-sectional surveys of families of cancer patients who died at inpatient hospices in Japan (2007-2014). We measured 10 core items of the Good Death Inventory (GDI) short-version on a 7-point scale, and calculated rates of "agree/absolutely agree" and the mean scores.Results: We analyzed 245 and 5140 responses of families of young and middle-aged patients, respectively. Less than 60% of families of young patients reported "agree/absolutely agree" regarding 9 items, which included "feeling that one's life was completed" in 44 (18%; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 14-23%), "being independent in daily life" in 48 (20%; 95% CI = 15-25%), and "being free from physical distress" in 103 (42%; 95% CI = 36-48%) young patients. Young patients were significantly less likely to feel "one's life was completed" (mean = 3.3 (standard deviation = 2.0) vs. 3.8 (1.9), respectively; effect size (ES) = 0.29; adjusted p value = 0.000) and "not being a burden to others" (3.1 (1.5) vs. 3.5 (1.6), respectively; ES = 0.24; adjusted p value = 0.010) than the middle-aged.Conclusions: Overall, young cancer patients did not achieve a good death. Background: The death of a loved one has great impact on family members even when the death was expected. While negative changes are reported, some individuals also report personal growth, known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Many studies on PTG have been performed using quantitative methods and suggest that PTG may differ according to the traumatic event and cultural background.Purpose: This study aimed to explore how Japanese bereaved family members of patients with cancer express their experience of PTG after the patient's death by analyzing open-ended answers provided in a cross-sectional survey.Methods: Qualitative data were collected through a survey, and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The present study was part of a larger cross-sectional survey of bereaved families of patients with cancer. Data analyzed in the current study were obtained from 162 bereaved family members of patients with cancer.Results: We identified 18 sub-themes within five predefined major domains of PTG. Moreover, we also identified two additional themes: changed view of life and death, and awareness of health management.Conclusions: The experience of PTG of bereaved family members varied considerably. This study aimed to elucidate the experiences of Japanese persons with hematological malignancy (PHMs) in communicating with health care professionals (HCPs), from diagnosis to the end of life, as recalled by their families. We interviewed 14 bereaved families and analyzed the data using the basic techniques of grounded theory. We found that PHMs lived to the fullest possible when they experienced ownership of their illness process despite their disease. The ownership was made possible by active communication from HCPs: first, acknowledging the PHM’s way of life, including reaching out from the HCPs and appreciating sincerely PHMs’ hopes and will; and second, paving the way ahead, including giving prospects and offering choices. The study underlines that rather than just providing information about the disease, HCPs need to actively ask about and show respect for the PHM’s way of life. Calhoun and Tedeschi’s growth model focuses on cognitive processing after bereavement but it does not show the change in life narrative from beforehand. Our qualitative study aimed to clarify bereaved family growth and revealed new perspectives on posttraumatic growth (PTG), including that the PTG process involves a pre-bereavement experience and is not limited to positive psychological changes.Based on the two new perspectives, a discussion of PTG theory reveals that bereaved families’ PTG can only be accurately captured if the pre-loss experience is included; thus, Calhoun and Tedeschi’s growth model, which only captures the post-loss process, is insufficient. Additionally, positive psychological changes are not the only type of growth. In this paper, we analyzed the role of the surviving caregiver on bereaved children's mental development. In bereaved family, living with mother, appropriate expression of grief, good psychological health level and positive parent-child interaction could promote the healthy development of bereaved children. Otherwise, bereaved children would suffer the secondary damage which stemmed from surviving caregiver ' s inappropriate reaction. Therefore, further research could explore the effect of bereavement type and the personality of surviving caregiver on the relation between surviving caregiver and bereaved children's mental development. The study purpose was to understand the perspectives of bereaved family members regarding palliative care unit (PCU) and palliative care and to compare perceptions of PCU before admission and after bereavement. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted, and the perceptions of 454 and 424 bereaved family members were obtained regarding PCU and palliative care, respectively. Family members were significantly more likely to have positive perceptions after bereavement (ranging from 73% to 80%) compared to before admission (ranging from 62% to 71%). Bereaved family members who were satisfied with medical care in the PCU had a positive perception of the PCU and palliative care after bereavement. This study aimed to clarify perspectives of bereaved family members regarding opioids and compare perceptions before admission and after bereavement. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey for bereaved family members in 100 inpatient palliative care units was administered. Participants were 297 bereaved family members of patients who used opioids. Many bereaved family members had misconceptions of opioids before admission. There was improvement after bereavement, but understanding remained low. Respondents less than 65 years old showed significantly greater decreases in misconceptions regarding opioids compared to older generations, after bereavement. Bereaved family members who were misinformed about opioids by physicians were significantly more likely to have misconceptions about opioids. The current crisis of police killings in South Africa is a challenge to the bereaved families of killed police officers in Limpopo Province. The bereaved are faced with the challenge of coping with the loss of their loved ones. The objective of this study was to examine the psycho-social effects of killing of the police on the bereaved families of killed police officers in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The researchers used a qualitative method to obtain data from individuals within Limpopo Province. A sample of 30 participants (bereaved family members of killed police officials) from Limpopo Province was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected on an individual basis through the use of in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using the seven steps proposed by Tesch, in order to understand how participants understand their personal experiences as bereaved family members of killed police officials in Limpopo Province. The findings of the study indicated that police killings have serious psycho-social effects in the lives of the bereaved families in Limpopo Province.The bereaved family may show any or all of the following reactions, Cognitive, emotional, and behavioural reactions to death. Children may suffer from psychological trauma after they have lost their loved ones. Some people who have been bereaved may find it difficult to concentrate, and prioritise activities which they have to carry out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
