Simple Summary Pomacea canaliculata is a South American invasive freshwater snail, affecting biodiversity, crop production and public health, now retrieved in Asian, North American and European countries. The identification of molecules connected to P. canaliculata adaptability may prove helpful in developing strategies that could overcome the snail’s resilience and stop its spread in non-original countries. This research presents the changes occurring in the proteome of a small organ, i.e., the ampulla, after challenging the snails with a nematode-based bio-pesticide. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrated that this organ has a complex connective ultrastructure and contains rhogocytes. TEM also confirmed the ampulla as a deposit of nitrogen-based material. After exposure to the nematode-based bio-pesticide, significant changes were observed for enzymes mainly involved in antioxidant defence, energy metabolism and cytoskeletal dynamics. These changes recall the systemic oxidative stress response that the snails undergo during the arousal after aestivation/hibernation, a physiological response involving other organs that, similarly to the ampulla, store nitrogen-based compounds. As fundamental players of the response against bio-pesticides and environmental cues, the enzymes identified in this research and involved in stress-related pathways may represent a suitable target for the efficacious and sustainable control of P. canaliculata spread. Abstract Pomacea canaliculata is a freshwater gastropod known for being both a highly invasive species and one of the possible intermediate hosts of the mammalian parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis. With the aim of providing new information concerning P. canaliculata biology and adaptability, the first proteome of the ampulla, i.e., a small organ associated with the circulatory system and known as a reservoir of nitrogen-containing compounds, was obtained. The ampullar proteome was derived from ampullae of control snails or after exposure to a nematode-based molluscicide, known for killing snails in a dose- and temperature-dependent fashion. Proteome analysis revealed that the composition of connective ampulla walls, cell metabolism and oxidative stress response were affected by the bio-pesticide. Ultrastructural investigations have highlighted the presence of rhogocytes within the ampullar walls, as it has been reported for other organs containing nitrogen storage tissue. Collected data suggested that the ampulla may belong to a network of organs involved in controlling and facing oxidative stress in different situations. The response against the nematode-based molluscicide recalled the response set up during early arousal after aestivation and hibernation, thus encouraging the hypothesis that metabolic pathways and antioxidant defences promoting amphibiousness could also prove useful in facing other challenges stimulating an oxidative stress response, e.g., immune challenges or biocide exposure. Targeting the oxidative stress resistance of P. canaliculata may prove helpful for increasing its susceptibility to bio-pesticides and may help the sustainable control of this pest’s diffusion.

A tailor-made benzothiazolium bromide salt functionality (BzTz) is introducedviasolvent-assisted ligand incorporation (SALI) into the mesoporous Zr-based metal-organic frameworkNU-1000. The resultingNU-1000-BzTzcomposite has been thoroughly characterized in the solid state. The functional group loading has been determined through1H NMR analysis of the digested sample (5% HF-DMSO-d6): a maximum value of 1.7BzTzligand per [Zr6] node is achieved. The material preserves its pristine crystallinity after SALI, as witnessed by powder X-ray diffraction. The functionalized MOF has a slightly lower thermal stability than its parent material (Tdec= 780vs.800 K, respectively). The N2adsorption isotherm collected at 77 K disclosed that its BET specific surface area (1530 m2g−1) is lower than that of prisitineNU-1000(2140 m2g−1), because of the space taken and weight added by the dangling benzothiazolium groups inside the pores. A total CO2uptake of 2.0 mmol g−1(8.7 wt% CO2) has been calculated from the CO2adsoprtion isotherm collected atT= 298 K andpCO2= 1 bar. Despite the lower BET area,NU-1000-BzTzshows an increased thermodynamic affinity for CO2(isosteric heat of adsorptionQst= 25 kJ mol−1) if compared withNU-1000(Qst= 17 kJ mol−1), confirming that the presence of a polar functional group in the MOF pores improves the interaction with carbon dioxide. Finally,NU-1000-BzTzhas been exploited as a luminescent sensor for polluting anions (CN−, SCN−, OCN−, and SeCN−as sodium or potassium salts) in aqueous solutions, after bromide exchange. A marked reversible blue shift of its emission band from 490 to 450 nm is observed in all cases, with the associated emission color change from light green to blue under a UV lamp. The detection limit of CN−(1.08 × 10−6M) is much lower than that measured for the other “stick-like” anions considered in this study. The process occurs efficiently even in the presence of other competing ions (i.e.in ordinary tap water), opening promising application perspectives in cyanide luminescence sensing in drinking water.

Background Pollution has been suggested as a precipitating factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, data about the link between air pollution and the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are limited and controversial. Methods By collecting data both in the OHCA registry and in the database of the regional agency for environmental protection (ARPA) of the Lombardy region, all medical OHCAs and the mean daily concentration of pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), benzene (C6H6), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) were considered from January 1st to December 31st, 2019 in the southern part of the Lombardy region (provinces of Pavia, Lodi, Cremona and Mantua; 7863 km2; about 1550000 inhabitants). Days were divided into high or low incidence of OHCA according to the median value. A Probit dose-response analysis and both uni- and multivariable logistic regression models were provided for each pollutant. Results The concentrations of all the pollutants were significantly higher in days with high incidence of OHCA except for O3, which showed a significant countertrend. After correcting for temperature, a significant dose-response relationship was demonstrated for all the pollutants examined. All the pollutants were also strongly associated with high incidence of OHCA in multivariable analysis with correction for temperature, humidity, and day-to-day concentration changes. Conclusions Our results clarify the link between pollutants and the acute risk of cardiac arrest suggesting the need of both improving the air quality and integrating pollution data in future models for the organization of emergency medical services.

To analyse the complications related to pexy, the main clinical manifestations that may raise suspicions of a pexy line rupture/detachment, the most suitable diagnostic technique and the optimum treatment to resolve this complication. This is a retrospective chart review in tertiary university referral centre. Medical charts of patients with oncological laryngeal pathologies admitted to the Otolaryngology Department of the University Hospital of Modena between May 2003 and March 2012 were analysed. Ten patients with rupture of the pexy were identified and included in the present study. The clinical manifestations were dysphagia, alteration of sensitivity of hypopharyngeallaryngeal structures, fever, infection and diastasis of surgical wounds, bleeding, dysphonia and aspiration pneumonia. Rupture of the pexy was diagnosed through endoscopic evaluations, radiological techniques or directly in the operating room during revision surgery of the earlier operation. Surgical treatments, coupled with effective swallowing rehabilitation, allowed progressive functional recovery. Patients were hospitalised until recovery of laryngeal functions was complete. In conclusion, pexy line rupture is one of the complications in the post-operative period of partial laryngectomies. Certain clinical manifestations may indicate this complication, helping the surgeon to establish an early diagnosis and administer prompt treatment.L'obbiettivo di questo studio è analizzare le complicanze correlate alla pessia, le principali manifestazioni cliniche che possano far nascere il sospetto di distacco di pessia, le principali tecniche diagnostiche e il miglior trattamento per risolvere questa complicanza. Trattasi di una revisione retrospettiva della documentazione clinica in un centro universitario di riferimento terziario. Sono state analizzate le cartelle cliniche di pazienti affetti da patologia laringea oncologica ricoverati nella Struttura Complessa di Otorinolaringoiatria dell'Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Modena tra maggio 2003 e marzo 2012. Dieci pazienti con distacco di pessia sono stati identificati ed inclusi in questo studio. Le manifestazioni cliniche riscontrate sono state: disfagia, alterazione della sensibilità delle strutture ipofaringo-laringee, febbre, infezione e diastasi delle ferite chirurgiche, emorragia, disfonia e polmoniti ab-ingestis. Il distacco di pessia è stato diagnosticato mediante valutazioni fibroendoscopiche, imaging radiologico o direttamente in sala operatoria durante il primo intervento o durante la chirurgia di revisione. Concludendo il distacco di pessia è una delle complicanze postoperatorie delle laringectomie parziali e alcune manifestazioni cliniche possono farla sospettare aiutando il chirurgo a giungere ad una diagnosi precoce, così da effettuare il prima possibile un adeguato trattamento.

International audience; Sub-continental lithospheric mantle rocks are exhumed at the foot of magma-poor distal passive margins as aresponse to extreme stretching of the continental crust during plate separation. Remnants of the Northern Iberianpaleo-passive margin are now exposed in the North-Pyrenean Zone (NPZ) and represent field analogues to studythe processes of continental crust thinning and subcontinental mantle exhumation. The NPZ results from theinversion of basins opened between the Iberia and Europa plates during Albo-Cenomanian times. In the westernNPZ, the ‘Chaînons Béarnais’ ranges display a fold-and-thrust structure involving the Mesozoic sedimentarycover, decoupled from its continental basement and associated with peridotite bodies in tectonic contact withPalaeozoic basement lenses of small size. Continental extension developed under hot thermal conditions, asdemonstrated by the syn-metamorphic Cretaceous ductile deformation affecting both the crustal basement and theallochthonous Mesozoic cover.In this study, we present structural and geochemical data providing constraints to reconstruct the evolution ofthe northern Iberia paleo-margin. Field work confirms that the pre-rift Mesozoic cover is intimately associatedto mantle rocks and to thin tectonic lenses of crustal basement. It also shows that the pre-rift cover was detachedfrom its bedrock at the Keuper evaporites level and was welded to mantle rocks during their exhumation atthe foot of the hyper-extended margin. The crust/mantle detachment fault is a major shear zone characterizedby anastomosed shear bands defining a plurimetric phacoidal fabric at the top of the serpentinized mantle. Thedetachment is marked by a layer of metasomatic rocks, locally 20 meters thick, made of talc-chlorite-pyrite-richrocks that developped under greenschist facies conditions. Raman Spectroscopy on Carbonaceous Materials(RSCM), performed on the Mesozoic cover reveal that the entire sedimentary pile underwent temperatures rangingbetween 200C and 480C.We show that: (i) at the site of mantle rocks exhumation, the boudinaged pre-rift sediments have undergone drasticsyn-metamorphic thinning with the genesis of a S0/S1 foliation and, (ii) the Paleozoic basement has been ductilelydeformed, into thin tectonic lenses that remained welded to the exhumed mantle rocks. Therefore the overallcrustal rheology appears dominated by shallow levels having a ductile behavior. This rheology is related to thepresence of a thick pre- and syn-rift decoupled cover acting as an efficient thermal blanket. This new geologicaldata set highlights important characteristics of ductile-type hyper-extended passive margin that cannot be obtainedfrom the study of seismic lines. Finally, we stress that studying field analogues represents a major tool to betterunderstand the mechanisms of extreme crustal thinning associated with mantle exhumation and their structuralinheritance during tectonic inversion.

Objetives: In head and neck surgery, Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography imaging (FDG-PET/CT) is often used to identify primary tumor site in patients with unknown primary carcinoma, to predict response after chemoradiotherapy and in some cases, to detect recurrence. To rehabilitate swallowing after surgery in patients with persistent dysphagia, an injectable suspension of silicone (VOX® Implants) can be used to reduce the gaps in the neoglottis. The purpose of this report is to document the PET appearance of PDMS in a series of 3 patients who underwent partial laryngectomy with subsequent VOX® Implants injection. Material and methods: A retrospective chart and imaging review was performed at our institution. Three patients were identified and included in the study. Appearance of PDMS at PET was described and discussed. Results: An increased uptake of 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) was noticed at PET in all patients. Conclusions: The increased uptake was possibly due to active inflammatory reactions that are necessary for tissue integration of textured silicone particles. (www.actabiomedica.it).

We have designed two novel dendrimers with cyclam cores with appended poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrons, decorated at the periphery with four and eight dansyl chromophores, respectively. The photophysical properties of the dendrimers and their Nd3+ complexes have been investigated. The energy-transfer efficiency to the lanthanide ions from these dendrimers has been studied as a function of the generation. It has been observed that an increase in the dendrimer generation as well as the number of amide units enhances the energy transfer to the lanthanide ion.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative project of multi-role fishing boat based on a SWATH catamaran architecture, high efficiency propellers and innovative wind sail auxiliary propulsion by means of a wing mast completely automated. The overall savings in fuel consumption, in reference to a traditional fishing boat of a similar size, the “Serena”, reaches the 90%, while the save in costs due to the only wing mast allows repaying the relative investment in less than 9 years.
